Quick Hits for Tuesday

Commenting on the news you might have missed (A Fran Spielman Special edition):
  • Traffic aides get no respect, especially since they have to wear new Traffic Management Authority uniforms. Fran Spielman with some hard hitting "Hired Truck" type reporting here.
  • Aldercreatures, since it isn't their money, want to give the boy accused in the Ryan Harris murder $10 million dollars. One must wonder how many political contributions have been promised to these creatures in return for their public support. Spielman again.
  • Spielman also writes the proposed "Traffic Stop Code of Conduct" is running into opposition from aldercreatures hesitant to tack more fines onto motorists stopped for traffic violations. Perhaps they should read the previous article and figure out where they're going to a spare $10 million?
  • The city council is again set to embarrass itself nationally (tribune registration req) by voting for the "orderly and rapid" withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. Actually, this could be a good thing if it focuses attention on the mayor and the continuing federal indictments of the most politically corrupt system in the US.(not Spielman)
  • Chicago Police Officer John Hurley returned home for burial (not Spielman)

So they admit that the only way that they get respect is basically by trying to pass themselves of as real cops. I have never worked with these people but I heard that they are complete morons. I know someone who works with Special Events and the morons are alway yelling on the radios for no reason. And I could be wrong here but I do not think I am they are using one of the city-wide zones to create their mess on.

What ever happened to this great union of ours that was suppose to sue the city in regards to all of this? I heard that the courts sided with union about two months ago but nothing has changed in regards to this program and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and soon the cities defense will be that they have already spent so many millions it would not be fiscally responsible to change the program.

Has anyone else noticed that this follows the trend of the city giving more of our police powers to OEMC???? You have this bullshit TMA which falls under the control of OEMC as well as all of the cameries in the city monitored by OEMC civilians, not police officers. Do not be fooled either, next time you are driving around the city look up at the street lamps and you will notice the small tube like cameras attached to the poles. These are supposedly there to monitor traffic flows but go figure they are directly hooked up to the same room that monitors the dumb ass, and extreme waste of money at over $15,000 each, blue light cameras. Be very carful on the streets. Not only do you have to worry about the shit heads pulling out a video camera, you have some idiot getting paid $12.00 an hour by the city watching you!

The OEMC thing has been a long-term trend for more than a decade.

The CPD puts out orders like CAPS dispatching, and then leaves it up to your squad to figure out how to get things to work. And God forbid anyone actually follow the rules ('cept in 003). Supervisors and tac cars: we don't do domestics. Lieutenants: you talkin to me? Other beat cars: squad, we'll take care of that.

Yup, those orders sure do work well. Much like how a dozen supervisors answer up every time an open call goes out for one!

There are so many things wrong that its hard to say where to begin. Rules from the field (CPD) that nobody in the field wants to follow. A merit promotion and arbitrary hang-you-out-to-dry discipline system where almost nobody in a white shirt is qualified and/or willing to supervise. The lack of supervision leading in part to scandals like entire tac teams getting rounded up by the feds.

And the answer? Tell the dispatcher to get those jobs out one way or another, and keep fiddling while the call count keeps going up. God forbid we actually let our police be the police and ask our supervisors to make decisions!

Rant over. If nothing else, I'm just saying that I wouldn't take none of it out on any but the worst dispatchers. The blame lies squarely with the the mayor and superintendents, current and past.

Yeah- now the traffic aids have to pay full price for their coffees. I've seen them "imply" they were the police all too many times. At least now it's clear they are not.

Yea, I was talking to an officer from 001 who told me one of their spots went full price because it was loaded with traffic control aides.

Recently at a night White Sox game there is a 10-1 given on city-wide from a traffic control aide at 39th. We roll on it, first unit at scene and ask the lady what is wrong, you okay?

She says, so help me, they won't stop for me and are making left turns when I'm signaling them not to. We tell her the sergeant was on the way, she was, and give a disregard.

OEMC will do what they want how they want because the supervisors LET THEM!. When is the last time you heard a Sgt. tell the dispatcher to re-assign a job to the appropriate beat or sector car?Their only goal is to get rid of the job, no matter who they have to give it to. If your a north end car and the job is on the south end, so what, they will give it to you anyway unless the Sgt. steps in and even then sometimes they will argue with him. They could care less that you are running al over the district. OEMC dispatchers think they are the Police and will always try to run the show if your Sgt. LETS THEM! Remember, the Sgt. is the boss on the street, not the dispatcher. If you get a job that is out of your sector or on another beat, mobile with the Sarge and ask for his permission to handle the job. Make him do his job.
As far as OEMC gaining power, how else is Da Mayor going to increase his patronage Army if he's not allowed to creat a new Department as he has done with OEMC and give it added responsibilty or power? He needs to find jobs for these political hacks, where else but something like OEMC or the CAPS program?
Neither OEMC or CAPS has resolved a problem, solved or prevented a crime.

While I don't agree with locking up or writing only specific groups of people, I will agree with you that the kind of posts that 3:35 and 3:42 posted is EXACTLY what ruined the original SCC and brought un-needed heat upon the Webmaster. Not to mention the fact that they make us ALL look like a bunch of unwashed, idiotic morons.

It would be difficult to reassign almost any job to an "appropriate" beat car, except the car for the beat which the job is on. At least I think so.

Everyone and their brother is supposed to be assigned work before a beat car goes off its beat.

I'm not defending the ridiculous system whatsoever. But its certainly within the authority of supervisors to tell dispatchers to hold priority 2 and 3 jobs (for beat cars, or response cars in the sector). In terms of accountability, this is the biggest problem that districts face. I'm waiting for the day that a supervisor finally comes up and says to not assign ANY car out of its sector or off its beat for any priority 2 or 3 job (with leeway granted of course, for anything that looks misprioritized, or probative of a threat to personal injury).

The whole system has been a mess forever, but they didn't create this mess. Its the command staff who wrote these rules, including priorities and call types.

Anyway, insofar as you suggest that sergeants need to be heard, I'm with you 100%. But insofar as you put one ounce of blame on a dispatcher for this mess, I'm with you 0%.

This is the rules they've been given and the field supervisors they've been given. And if they are gonna get a number for one thing, it ain't gonna be for sending a car off its beat. 98% of the numbers up there are for delay of dispatch.

Anyone ever wonder why they all drop dead before 50?

OFFICER SAFETY!!!!! Anyone know the true story about copper from sside who was jumpeed by GD's while jogging along sside lakefront. While copper was locking up dude he threatened P.O. stating "I know where you live." Instead of additional charges being placed on dude, a supp or info report was filled out. Typical CPD reaction bosses with no balls. Sure enough threat is carried out and GD's jump P.O.Why is this story not being told? Where is our union? How come this story is being swept under the rug? Why do we still have to live in the city without compensation?

I am glad I do not work for CPD. I work for a suburb in Will County, and in a case like the one above, we would of charged the pond scum with everything we could. Our bosses dont back down from the gang bangers, like it sounds like they do at CPD. God bless, and stay safe out there!!

These TMA's are a nightmare! I go to SOX games and every time there are two or three incidents where I literally cringe because I think they are gonna get somone killed. I know the teams are paying some kind of tax now to pay for traffic control. They should all ask for their money back. Getting in and out is of SOX park is 100% worse than it ever was before.

Our SAFETY specialist should get his facts straight before he goes smearing people. The officer who was attacked. The officer who was attacked was near his home in 003, not on the Lakefront and he and his partner handled the arrest of the man who threatened him who was also from the neighborhood. He was charged with everything he could be legally charged with. Later that night, the officer was out jogging w/o his weapon (btw the officer is also a boxer), and he was surrounded by 7-8 males and cut with a broken bottle. It was a very serious attack but not life threatening probably due to the officer's overall physical condition. The offenders have been identified through very sources but the officer is unable to make a positive identification.

You can bet that racial profiling is in full effect , especially in the 018th district. The bosses of the 018th district should be ashamed of themselves. You had better not be a black man driving a nice car or riding a nice motorcycle. You can count on being stopped and issued citations for whatever these young white officers could find in the MCC or IVC. And if you're an african american police officer, you had better watch out because not only will these racist cops write you a ticket but they'll see to it that you're convicted and your good name smeared all across the city. What happen to the good ole days when officers gave other officers profession coutesy. I guess these white officer would have to see black men, especially other coppers as being professional huh? And by the way. All Harley Davidson Motorcycles have straight pipes and emit exhaust noise. If you wasn't so busy drinking and gambling and trickin all of your money away. You to can have some of the finer things in life and not hate on the brothers who do. Brothers Beware. Stay out of the 018th district, the breeding ground of the modern day klan.

i have been on this job a long time, allmost twenty years and i will be able to retire soon. as long as you guys and gals are divided you will never get what you deserve. think about it we are 13000 strong. think how many people each of us could bring to the polls. think about how much money we could raise as a group, think about it. if we were really organized as a group what we could acomplish. i am a sgt who was promoted on merit. i did not do well on the exam, but my record on this job, lets just say i doubt if any one on this blog could surpass my work on this department. take care and good luck officers on your goals.

1096........You sir are the moron..you missed the whole point of that comment....It's about coppers looking out for other cops. Not the drug problems that plaque both the white and black community. When i came on the job... You wouldn't even think about writing another copper and that behavior was taught.. The coppers these days are taught by other young, goofy coppers that's it's OK to write other coppers.. And maybe by doing that they will somehow be rewarded....Especially those racist cops in the 018th district.....Note to young white cops in 018......If your not already on Tact....you ain't going. Stupid
