Uniform Change

As we posted 3 months ago or so, the Black Vest Cover has been approved for wearing as an outer garment. There don't seem to be any restrictions. Go check out Department Notice 05-40 for specs, rules and specifics.

About time! But now the Inspectors are probably going to go after unshined shoes to make up their numbers.

Speaking of Inspectors...seems there was a little shakeup in the 025th district gang unit. A Sgt. was caught with his civilian ghetto girlfriend on duty driving around on calls in a unmarked squad car! He even takes her to a crime scene & gets caught by an inspector. Then this Sgt. gets in a shootout by his ghetto girlfriends house , shoots his gun & his car- but no offenders are found. Seems this Sgt. would not even supervise his guys , because he was too busy showing off his POOOLICE skills to his ghetto thang.....He got dumped to midnights in 025 yesterday. Imagine if the last A5 D.C. found out about this!

Hey M!
Not sure where to post this but maybe you can give it its own spot. It is what the Associated Press says is the five-minute, unedited version of the incident in New Orleans involving the confrontation with the officers on the street.

Hey 1238, you are a moron. That sergeant was dumped ONLY because the LT wanted to bring up his boy from 014, Lohman. Don't go spreading stupid shit about someone because you obviously don't like them. Besides, his "ghetto girlfriend" as you so retardedly put it, is also the police.

Joining Lefty in going a bit OT here...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chi-0510140035oct14,1,2034876.story?coll=chi-news-hed

Anyone else see today's editorial in the Tribune? Its about, gasp, the evacuation plan!

What amazes me (I'm the poster who initiated these comments in prior threads) is that the Tribune gives the city and state the benefit of the doubt. That they believe for even one second that Daley's hand-picked disaster planners have an evacuation plan. And that they really just need to keep quiet about it for safety reasons.

Will somebody please email the link to this board to the Tribune's Editorial Board? We could do a show of hands for who in the Police Department or the OEMC has ever heard of any plan prior to the planning-in-progress that is happening now?

In short, these people are LIARS, and the papers buy into the lies. If there is a plan, why do they need Sullivan to come in and write a plan? Why why why.

I'm 99% certain that move was made after the allegations and information of "no plan" were posted on this blog.

I'm 100% certain that the Tribune is wilfully blind to the lies told by the city in this matter. Nobody is stupid enough to believe these transparent lies; yet, the Tribune accepts them as truth so as to dispute the smaller matter of whether the non-existent plan must be publicized.

Nevertheless, so long as a call for publication is an editorial in the Tribune, does anyone have any doubt that Sullivan will be burning the midnight oil writing a plan this weekend? If he does it right, there may be a promotion in the cards.

Bury this one quick ole boy, the Mayor, Fat Phil and the other emergency officials in Chicago need a plan to shown on Monday morning!

If nothing else, there are more components of any "plan" in the editorial than there are currently in writing between the CPD and the CFD. Maybe John Wayne, or whatever they called Sullivan, should give the Tribune editorial board a call for tips and clues on emergency management. Might save him a few hours this weekend.

Not sure how true the black vest cover thing is because that tall Irish inspector wrote up a sgt at a 10-1 in 008 on Thursday because she had a black vest cover on.
And i would have to say that has to be the biggest no balls thing I have ever seen. I hope it was approved so she an shove it up his ass. At a 10-1 for gods sake!!!!!

one restriction about the black vest cover...

if you work in 025, you have to get a CPD emblem embroidered on it, just like everything else in your civilian wardrobe.

and yes, the joke is still alive and well in the patrol division, it's called grand and central - the real police.

There's a new order that approves the black vest cover. However, it's dated 14 Oct 05, so that Sgt in 008 might still get the shaft.

It's about time they authorized us to wear them. They look 100% better than the blue and white leather covers that a lot of people wear. They tend to get pretty nasty after a while. Once at roll call inspection, the Lt told one guy to clean his vest cover and then burn it. We were all howling 'cause the guy is such a slob, but was in complete denial.

Besides, if allowing us to wear a black cover gets more P.O.'s to wear the damn, thing, all the better. There's too few of us on the streets as it is.

10/15/2005 04:46:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why do you think it looks better? Personally, I think the vest cover should match the shirt you are wearing, otherwise it looks like shit. I remember the time I was detailed to an event at Navy Pier with the Fed's for a visit from clinton. A few guys show up with the vests that did match the shirt and the Fed guys thought they were our SWAT team and wanted to know why they were there. I think we are probably the only Dept. in the country that allows the vest to be worn in a cover outside of your shirt.

About 7 years ago I made a traffic stop on the west side. There were three heads in the car and in the middle of going thru the 2nd guy an SOS car pulls up behind us. 3 guys get out and and stand by the front of our car. My partner and I are tossing the car when I hear someone say, "You're not dealing with some pussy-ass now, you got SOS here." I stop what I'm doing, And look over. Here's this little fat Asian cop (5'6", 220/230lbs) talking shit to this fucking monster of a black guy (6'3", 300lbs) who had been totally cooperative to this point. Then the little fat ass says, "You better keep it straight, we don't play like like these district boys". So I say, "Wat the fuck did you just say"? He starts to walk back to his car and I follow him. A general motherfucking contest ensues. I end up locking the big black guy up for a warrant. We're in the station and he says to me, "I thought you and old chink boy were going throw. I wanted to see him bust out some kung fu". That made me laugh. But til this day I have a hard on for SOS. In defense of the big mouth's partners, they never got involved. But just because you blew your way onto the one bagger task force doesn't make you super cop. Every time I see SOS I look for that little fat fuck so I can go after him again.

Man do I ever hate hearing stories like that. Ain't no better way to get hurt or killed on the west side than to be standing around a jackass who starts somethin up for no reason.

That story is rare in my experience though. Most any uniform, district or SOS, on the west side would have their hat handed to them 10 ways to sunday each day if they displayed that kind of attitude regularly. And it wouldn't be the citizens doing the hat handing. Hell, theres been the occasional goof in 011 who gets disavowed by the entire watch within a week of coming in.

Having a partner who doesn't mind getting into it is one thing, having a partner who starts it up for no reason is entirely another.

I have heard that black vest covers were never approved in the past because the theory was it silhouettes your torso and shows bad guys your wearing a vest making them aim for your head when there shooting at you. (It holds some merit, but not much) I applaud any changes to the uniform that will make you more comfortable for the 8 hours you have to wear that clown suit but changing colors is nothing more that a fashion statement. I would rather use my uniform check on a vacation then a new "black" vest cover.

The bad part about this order is that the Department just told me that my Zylon vest can no longer be used for field duty. No target dates, no official notice that in the future they will be not approved, just with the mighty sweep of a Department Notice its not longer allowed.

I wonder if anyone will say that they can not go out on field duty because their vest that was approved yesterday is no longer approved today and they have not been given an opportunity to purchase a new one and do not want to violate the notice.

The notice tells us what we should do if we have a zylon vest and need to become party of the class action law suit. The only problem is that the deadline for this was 09-SEP-05.

Before the department said the zylon vest is better than no vest.

Now they are not approved overnight!

Are they going to buy a new vest for me under first issue? Will they revise the order in an appropriate manner and give a timetable in which to purchase a new vest?

I think they should wait until after a uniform check because I don't have extra money to pop for a vest right now!

What do you all think?

I'm the guy who called you peachy. Let me tell you a story. On Feb 9, 1982 on the 8100 block of south Morgan two very good friends of mine, William Fahey and Richard O’Brien, were murdered on duty and in uniform by Andrew and Jackie Wilson. A clown suit is worn by clowns and they were not clowns, but I suspect you are. That uniform represents you and all those who stand next to you. It is not a fashion statement as the previous poster said. It represents all the ideals you supposedly hold. When the public sees that uniform and says "aw shit", or feels hate and anger; that's a good thing. If you've ever been in the middle of something bad and saw that uniform coming, you're heart would soar. That uniform is one of the things that binds us together. It stands for all those who came before us and those who gave their lives. The reason doesn't matter as much as the sacrifice. It should be worn with pride and respect, and it should say, "I don't take shit and I will deal it out if I need too." It's funny that your this is all bullshit attitude is quite similar to all the bosses you probably proclaim to hate, and I'll admit I'm a boss. Rip me for that if you want to. I haven't worn my uniform in a lot of years and I don't own own a pair of the new cargo pants. But if I was getting my ass handed to me tomorrow I wouldn't care if the P.O. coming to help me was wearing 80/20's or cargo pants. Now, I don't know you peachy, but I would be worried if I was waiting for you in your "21 Jump Street" costume. If I was moved tomorrow and put back in uniform, I would wear it with pride.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

No I won't turn it down 11:40. Read 12:44's post and maybe you will understand my anger a little better. Let me ask you this. Do the names Doyle, O'Brien or Fahey mean anything to you? Well if not, let me clue you in. As 12:44 stated so eloquently,on 09Feb1982 Officers Fahey and O'Brien were gunned down when they made a street stop. You know where were coming from? Jimmy Doyles funeral. You know who Jimmy Doyle was? He was another Chicago Police Officer who gave his life in the line of duty. Do you know what all three were wearing the day they died? THE UNIFORM OF THE CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT! So don't tell me to turn it down and don't call me Francis. Tell Peachy to smarten up, show a little respect, get a little self respect and to never ever call the uniform that I wear with pride and good men have died in, a "clown suit".

"Clown suit", eh? I share the outrage of "Francis" and other posters. By your mere statement, you are a TRAITOR to the CPD and law enforcement officers in general. I've seen all too many blood soaked CPD uniforms on our fallen comrades to suffer a piece of shit like you.

There is a cynical saying in the NYPD that when you return to uniform from "the Bureau" that you're "back in the BAG".

But "clown suit", you low-life motherfucker!

Eat shit and die!

In truth, I think you are like alot of the posters here. You are just looking to vent on some other cop. The guy has an opinion that the uniform looks silly, thats it! I have also had two friends killed on this job and I am as pro-police as possible but I'm not gonna mother fuck some living P.O. because he doesn't like the look of the current uniform.
I didn't know that other guys who were killed and I'm sure that will get me the dissertation entitled "Guys with less than 20 years ain't shit". I love that one. Yet I work in a district where no old men will work. How are these young guys supposed to learn if there is no one to teach them? I think these young coppers do a pretty good job considering all the rules that the dinosaurs from the "old school" implemented to keep them from working. I'm glad they think they know everything... It gives them the balls to go out and teach themselves the job that none of the Supercops stayed around to teach them. Yes, you are getting old and scared...but you once knew everyting too. Tick-tock you grumpy old bastards.

Whether a uniformed officer has been on the job for forty DAYS or forty YEARS is irrelevant. The point is the symbolism and RESPECT. Don't try to weasel out of the "clown suit" abomination.

"Francis" here. Why do you bring the seniority issue into this? That has nothing to do with it. It's about respect for the uniform, something I hold in very high regard. If someone doesn't like the uniform, thats their right, but don't call it a "clown suit". And I didn't come on here to rant on some copper. When I mentioned the three names that I did, thats just a few of the good men that I knew that died wearing the uniform. And while they didn't die FOR the uniform, they did wear it proudly everyday. As do I. The uniform stands for something, represents something, it's not just a piece of linen to be described as a "clown suit". Did you ever attend a St. Judes Parade, stand on Michigan Ave. and see the thousands of Officers? What made it do impressive,so distinctive? What stood out as compared to a regular day on Michigan Ave. when there were thousands of citizens attending to their own business? Yes, the uniform. It makes you stand out, it represents us, it says to other people that we are Chicago's Finest. I've stood on the corner of Chicago and Michigan when the parade went by. Numerous people told me how impressive we looked, how impressed they were with us, how good we looked in that UNIFORM!. Not one person came up to me and called it "clown suit" as unfortunately one of our own has chosen to do. Or should I say somebody that pretends he's one of us?

Well said by all of you who respect the uniform. The clown suit supporter mocks you for having 5 minutes on the job then turns around and mocks you as a dinosaur. Please let us know what years are the "real police" window? It's interesting that the guy who started with clown suit has chosen "bustout" as his moniker. That says more about him than anything he wrote.

You know what really ticks me off is to see civilial dressed chicago police officers marching at the St. Judes parade. They must use there high paying jobs and uniform checks for something else to.

I agree with you to a certain part, the dics should be in uniform on that special day, but don't forger that their uniform is the business suit. Or dockers and a sports shirt with a tie. Or anything the boss lets them get away with.

Don't you realize what these negative comments about the uniform really say, not only to us, but to the citizens who read this blog? It screams that WE don't respect the uniforms; if we don't respect the uniforms, how can we expect the citizens to respect the uniforms or the officers wearing them? Let's get it together folks--you may not like the style or the fabric, but the uniform should convey authority and command respect, from citizens and cops alike.

Maybe the comments about the uniform (for or against) reveal more about the organization and its membership than they do about the actual uniform items. Maybe (?) there's a significant problem with the Department's promotional/assignment processes, and with the intelligence, competence, integrity, morality, and character of all of the ranks, most importantly to include the supervisory and exempt ranks. If asked, how would Department members evaluate their supervisors on the question of competence, integrity, and character (and as described, character defines what a person says and does, how he acts and behaves,......when no one is looking ?)

RE Uniforms

O.w. Wilson is rolling over in his grave. Baseball caps, BDUs, dickies and other strange stuff.

I just came through Chicago for the first time in three years.

1. Baseball caps. Could they have picked an uglier one? I don't think so. The checkerboard hat helps the public determine the real pooolice from the doorknob shakers. Not anymore...

2. BDU's are okay for the rangemasters or HBT folks. They look like shit on a street cop.

3. Dickies are better than ties. I hope they're break-away so nobody gets strangled.

4 The new stars look so cheap. Did they come as the Crackerjack prizes?

The baseball hats are cut like a woman's tennis hat and the new stars look like security guard stars. They were personally designed by the great Terry Hillard, in between news conferences apologizing for inept, useless, brutal, etc., etc., all his officers were.

The new stars were authorized and apporved by Hillard; they were designed by then Commander of Personnel Stevens and a Detective from Personnel. Let's place the blame for our Barney Fife badges on the right people.

While the baseball hats look silly, they are FAR better than the berets that Maurer was pushing for.

The berets would have looked good, with General Maurer and his dog leading from the front. Cigar in one hand and an ivory handled .45 in the other.

When I came back to work from a leave, the girl at personnel was so happy to show me my new star. I wanted to puke. She told me that 4 designs were submitted and The Great Hillard liked none of them. He then took individual aspects he liked from each star and added to it. He came up with the final design. Kind of his own "Stroger Hospital". I used to be so proud of those stars. I hide my new one in my wallet.

REGARDING THE "NEW" BASEBALL HATS
Makes policemen look like ding-bat security guards.

Show some pride, either wear the garrison hat or none at all.

TRY TO LOOK LIKE POLICEMEN, not some TV type shithead from Hollywood.

Thank You and Good Night
