Another Shot at Positive-type Stuff

How about another shot at positive stuff?

When you retire, what are you going to do and where are you going to go? This could actually be a decent thread if people explain the reasoning behind it all.
  • Are you going to rattle doorknobs or are you walking away from the whole police thing?
  • Are you staying in town or bailing the entire corrupt Illinois structure?
  • Are you moving because you're pension goes farther or are you going somewhere where the golf is good and the weather spectacular?
  • Did the city pay for your degree and you're going to do twenty-and-gone and start anew somewhere else or are you just going to go fishing?
Run with it people. And stay on topic!

UPDATE: STAY ON TOPIC! We just went through and deleted all the stuff that wasn't on topic. If you need to spout off, find the open threads OR go get your own blog. It's cheap (free) and easy.

Im going to go wherever my kids go. Im going to forget as much as I can about this city. Im going to cherish everyday I wake up away from this city. Im going to pray everyday for all the young boys and girls stuck in this hell whole.

Im going enjoy as much as I can. Im going to be proud I never gave into the temtation of getting caught up in all the corruption that this city bleeds. That's as positive as I can be right now. ask me in 3 more years.

AUSTRALIA!!!

You have to trust me on this, mate. I've visited every state, Canada, Mexico, Asia, many visits to Europe. Tuscany is great. The South of France, Provence and Nice are nice.

But for friendly folks, rare internal strife and virtually no violent crime among strangers, you can NOT beat the quality of life in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. As they say in Oz, "no worries, mate!".

Kick back at Circular Quay, cafes outside the Opera House, the topless-optional Bondi Beach (Sydney) or at the sidewalk cafes of St. Kilda (Melbourne) and enjoy life. Get together with your favorite lady for a matinee: grab a cold 6-pack of Victoria Bitter ("V-B"), a fine Cuban torpedo and have a picnic at a secluded suburban wooded park, a tranquil cemetery or golf course and watch a mob of kangaroos frolic only yards away. Great wines and cuisine, great American old time rock 'n' roll and love songs, topless-optional beaches, etc. Check out the beer gardens and seafood at Doyle's at Watsons Bay and the Vaucluse. Unlimited things to do and places to go with vibrant nightlife. Trips to the Outback, the wineries en route to the Blue Mountains, Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef, the enchanted forests near the Margaret River south of Perth (the most distant city in the world from Chicago and the entire contiguous 48 states).

Our police counterparts are great hosts. "The Brotherhood" is strong, even half-way around the world. Best time to visit: An extended SUMMER stay during the Chicago WINTER.

Only major problem: Oz lacks the USA's ethnic diversity. While all law-abiding visitors are welcome, regardless of ethnicity, the Aussies have an extremely low tolerance for assholes. Visit for at least a month if not a lifetime.

Australia is absolutely the best place to visit. But beware should you decide to immigrate there, you first have to prove that you are able to work or support yourself, even if you marry an Aussie. GOOD IDEA!!!!

I'm finishing an MBA, paid for by the City, just like my Bachelors was. I doubt I'll do the "20 and out " thing, but it is nice to know that I will have the opportunity to do so if I want.

My future plans include either teaching at the college level in this same general vinicity ( but out of the City itself ), or possibly a move to Vegas and running hotel security. I have some connections out there that could prove helpful, but I'd probably just get myself into trouble out there anyway. heh heh heh

Realisticly, I'll stay on this job until I'm 50, which will give me 26 years and then move on. Hopefully by then we'll see a 25/75 or even 25/80 option on the pension. But I won't hold my breath...

By the way, is it really that hard for you goofs to stay on topic? Geesh!

5 more years and I will retire to a beautiful stretch of land that I own in Montana. No crime, no noise, and no people for miles around. Paradise, to be sure. My wife and I will do some road traveling out west via RV, hunting, fishing and enjoy life.

I've been lucky to make certain investment choices over the years that will insure a comfortable and happy retirement.

And I wish you all the same!

I'm not going to be one of those guys who drops dead 6 months after retirement because this job was my life. And if I do, I'm giving St. Peter a West Side beat down right in front of the Pearly Gates!

I have been looking into getting some propety in Montana as of late as well. My plan is to spend the summers there and have a nice ranch in New Mexico for the winters. My wife and I have been collecting some real estate and a business or two the last few yrs and if everything goes right I am going to outlive more than my fair share from the pension.

I'm gonna buy me a fancy 3-bdrm. condo in the 3700 block of Lexington St., just off Independence Blvd. and not work another day in my life. The problem with 016 is that all the dogs from other districts that have enough time to bid to 016 are comming here and there is nothng anyone can do about that. The other problem is that when recruits came here from the academy alot of the ppo's sent here were fat useless broads and the other were certifably retarded. What we need is for the dept to open the districts back as training districts and send over a shit load of young males over then and only then can you attempt to stop the bleeding. P.S. cutting that district in half would help, people just dont grasp how 30.4 sq. miles is. Its fucking Huge!!!!

Its beem 18 years now and we picked the south, Florida, Ft. Myers. We have to put up with strong winds once in a while. And yes, we were snowbirds until two years ago, selling the one in Door County Wi.

Trying to keep up two homes is for the birds, and besides made one nice profit. I havn't been in the city since I retired only through it on a trip to Wi. in Aug 05.

As far as keeping busy, fishing is great, its a golfers paradise, but expensive until the snowbirds head north. As far as housing, its expensive. Sales tax 6%, no state income tax.

And coppers, lots of them from all over the country, state, local, federal, you name it. Interesting, if you cut your teeth on the CPD, you could work anywhere in policing.

Many of the smaller town retires are amazed at the starting salaries of the CPD. Well, so much for shooting the bull, hope you all find your paradise which should include excellent hospitals.

All most forgot, get your self one good physical that covers all bases before you retire. I didn't and had open Heart surgery one month after retirment.

Remember, you don't need a degree to take the next Sgts. test, just 60 hours on the books. You can flame these classes all you want but they do the trick.

HAROLD WASHINGTON COLLEGE

The Police Training Unit for Harold Washington College is located at the Education and Training Division.

Our goal is to provide core college classes to police officers, which are transferable to any four year institution for a nominal fee of $25.00.

Additionally, you can take two classes for this same amount. For the Spring term, (beginning in January 2006), we will be offering the following classes:

Spanish 102 History 111 Humanities 201 Speech 101

60 college credits are part of the requirements in order to fulfill the position of Sergeant. Taking classes from Harold Washington College can help you fulfill this portion of the requirements and the cost is not prohibitive.

For further information, please feel free to contact Wayne Wiberg or the Staff at the Academy at 312-243-2995 Monday thru Friday, 0800 -1400 hours.

I planned it before retirement. The cost that is. We are happy. My dog and I love this fucking city and do not want to relocate.
The grass is not always greener on the other side.

All of the above plans sound pretty good. The only regret I have about taking this job is that I didn't apply sooner.I came on at 33 and only have 12YOJ.Accounting for the fact that the city won't be offering health insurance after 2013,I'll probably end up doing the full 29yrs & a day.By then I'll be 62 and medicaid should kick in (If it still exists). If I'm still alive,I plan to pack up and move to Charleston,S.C. Ocean views, freindly people, and a slower, simpler lifestyle.I plan to take up golf and do plenty of fishing. The wife and I also plan to do a lot of traveling as long as we're physically able.I agree with the previous blogger,"look at the glass as half full" I know a lot of times this job sucks and the bosses aren't as good as they used to be,but at least we have a job.One thing that's constant about being a beat officer and seeing all the rotten things we do (especially on the west & south side)is that things can always be worse. After doing a tour of duty and coming home,I thank God for my house,my wife,my family, my freinds, and my fellow P.O.'s who watch my back so I can come home safe.If you think you're not blessed, take a step back and take a good look at some of the dysfunctional people we serve and the enviorment they live in.Puts everything in perspective for me.

The CPD has a lot of good multi-talented people in its ranks. I think a lot of us had another line of work or profession before we joined the force. I feel that there was life before being a cop...and there will be life after. A person can find another job and use their talents wisely. A lot of employers respect the retired police and that is a fact. So plan ahead..there are many things we can accomplish...stay safe and healthy.

I'd like to see the Mayor buried at the center of Millineum Park and have a porta poty placed on top for a head stone. The entire city may then visit and crap on him and his entire masterpiece. That would be about the only way I would want to stay in the city after I retire. So I could make a "Daley visit" and donate to both him and the park. I'd even move closer to the downtown so I'd be nice and close when I get the urge.

Hey 1:20:04 am...This is my first time every responding to this blog, and until now, I have only seen the hatred, anger and immaturity in how we express ourselves on this site. Your message was very refreshing and I share the same sentiments. Thank you.

Let's just do our job and be thankful that we have one. In the process, let's look for positive thinking and dismiss the negative attitudes that surround us. Let us continue to protect each other regardless of race, creed or color and just see that we are all "blue". All of this hatred and anger will only make the rest of us miserable. That misery will follow us and grow until we retire! Are we going to retire happy or just bitter and angry? It won't make a difference where we decide to live if we can't fix our attitudes now.

The point of retirement is to enjoy our lives after we've put in our time of "hard work". There is no reason to make our jobs any harder by breeding hate and disgust. We need to learn how to speak to each other properly and work out our problems.

Let us stick together and have fun out there. We, as Police Officers, do not need to be like the muts we patrol. Let's show some class out there--be Professional!

why is it that it seems the most miserable coppers are the dog-asses from 016, 022, or 019 that have never done anything, and never will do anything... but the working police from working districts seem to be semi-satisfied with this job. you'd think it would be the other way around.

But no I cant sit in a bar and brag about working in the csary west side, Englewood or SOS. The pays the same and some day you my friend will realize that and bid to 022.

REMEMBER: We can only speculate about the identity, gender, race and occupation (not even a copper?) of these ANONYMOUS posters.

The above "#1 dog ass copper from the west side" may not even be a P.O., let alone a black officer.

One thing we do know: (s)he is a world-class asshole.

This was suppose to be about retirement plans......

Wherever your go, and whatever you do...may you collect more pension checks than paychecks.

And wherever you go to live...keep a Chicago address, and vote absentee for a mayor that will restore our benefits.

I got ten years to go. The wife and I are using my vacation time to explore other parts of the country and the world to see where we would like to land. Basically I am going to land anywhere but Chicago and Illinois. Get me a nice little spread (Which I will probably pay for with what I take from my house the way property is soaring), kick back for a bit before I decide what to do with my life. I probably will buy one of those little tax write off businesses just to keep me busy. With my luck I will buy something that will turn into a Microsoft and I will find out what it is to work for a living after I retire.

Cheers to all you retirees out there. You all have laid the groundwork for us working stiffs. Enjoy your relaxation.
