It Must be Nice

It must be nice to be so beholden to labor unions that you decide you don't need an economic engine like WalMart in the city. It must be nice that your schools are so well off that you can reject over $1 million dollars a year in property and sales taxes. It must be nice to have such successful institutions like schools, libraries and museums that would otherwise benefit from the largesse that flows from a project like WalMart.

What's that? 24,500 Chicagoans applied for jobs at the new WalMart in Evergreen Park? But we thought everyone in the city had jobs? Well, good thing the City is flush with money so they don't have to close schools - what's that? A $328 million dollar deficit and they're closing four schools? But we thought the schools had money? Well, at least the museums are successful - what? Attendance is down at the museums? And the parking garages can't support their own bond issues?

Well, golly - this city must be run by incompetent fools! Why else would they turn down a guaranteed money maker like WalMart? They bring jobs, revenue, and are notoriously good neighbors to the surrounding community, regularly sponsoring team sports at schools, classroom projects and all sorts of stuff.

But they're non-union. So we hope the aldercreatures and mayor (that caved into union pressure at the expense of what could have been a large economic windfall for the city) accept their union donations, they do it with a smile.

I'm sorry this city and country doesn't need China Mart. Over 80% of the products they sell aern't made in the USA. They can employ all the people they want. I don't and won't step foot in any of there stores.

Must workers in the USA give up everything to keep some jagoff rich beyond all belief? We truly have gone back to the 30's. The next depression isn't far away.

Clinton, Bush, and whoever the next President is can say what they want about the economy. Americans have never worked more and gotten less in wages since the last depression.

That is what WalMart does. They come in and put all the surrounding stores out of business and then dictate terms to keep that store open. Its not how much money WalMart would bring in, because you have to factor in who they put out of business and that lost money.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a union to protect your rights? Oh, that's right SCC...YOU DO! Do you think you would be making nearly as much as you do as a Chicago Police Officer if you had no union?

Do you think that these Chinamart workers will ever have enough money to buy a decent house? Or for that matter, what about all the AMERICAN workers who lose their jobs due to you buying the cheap-ass shit, made poorly, that you buy from Chinamart?

You are shoveling a lot of shit here, SCC. Daley probably IS the piece of shit everyone on this blog thinks he is. But even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

You have answered your own question, union boy. Unions have destroyed the steel industry, airline industry, textiles and countless others, and now we see the beginning of the end of the auto industry in this country. And you wonder why Wallmart is doing so well, because the shit that they sell is not produced in this country, which makes it affordable to the average American. The Democratic Party has truly become the party of the non-working man both literally and figuratively.

SCREW WALMART!
Since the beginning of their chain, they have bankrupted and liquidated small towns, eliminating the local pharmacy, camera shop, grocery stores, hardware store, even putting out the eye doctors, no one cares that these American's had a job running a small business, giving the locals jobs and a sense of community. The only place you could be employed was Walmart then, with their barely above minimum wages, while they made billions selling their $3 dollar tee shirts and rugs produced by some child in India or China.
(numerous times they were busted with child labor violations). If you are going to run a non union multi billion dollar industry, then have the common decency not to exploit the human condition, pay a livable, viable wage! And guess what you would still be a billionaire! Greedy bastards, taking advantage of everyone SCREW THEM! Let them open a union shop if they want our business!

See page 10 of the Sun-Times dated 26Jan06. Article "Stroger relative charged in campaign sign incident"

In a nutshell it is one more reason NOT to do any police work in Chicago or any other "DEMOCRAT" suburb.

Briefly it relates that Vincent Jones 43 (I am assuming he's M/1- call it racial profiling) an $87,000 a year Cook County Purchasing agent, member of Cook County Recorder of Deeds Eugene Moore's political organization, and Stroger relative Roughed up a citizen in Forest Park after the guy told him NOT to put a campaign sign in his yard.

The citizen calls police, and this asswipe Jones Fought with the police when they ordered the sign taken down.He completly melts down and "Motherfucks" the police, calling them bitches, etc., and orders them to replace the sign. He then tells them before being locked up that he is politically connected, they are making a mistake, and threatens to "take care of them" he gets all their badge numbers and tells them that he is going to file a lawsuit, and enter the hospital claiming he was beaten by the police and a victim of police brutality.

THE OUTCOME: Cook County recorder of Deeds, Eugene Moore bailed out Jones putting down the 10% of the $10,000 Bond.

Jones later filed a complaint against 2 white and 1 black officer alleging police brutality and racial discrimination, just as he threatened to do! (In 2002, Jones was charged with resisting arrest and felony U.U.W.)BOTH later dropped.(No doubt, he's a nice young man, and has the qualifications and background to attain such status as a PURCHASING AGENT with cook county)

C'MON PEOPLE..THIS CRIMINAL GOOF IS MAKING MORE MONEY THEN MOST POLICE OFFICERS IN CHICAGO AND GETS AWAY WITH THIS TYPE OF THUGGISH BEHAVIOR AGAIN AND AGAIN!

Now multiply it exponentially by the number of "Democrats" in the south and westsides AND the conclusion is clear......DON'T DO A FUCKING THING ON THIS JOB, YOU'll JUST GET FUCKED BY SOME POLITICAL HACK, REVEREND, OR COMMUNITY ACTIVIST(AKA GANGBANGER)and be on the receiving end of a CR # and Lawsuit for peforming your duties!"

That said..VOTE for Forrest Claypool he'll clean up this corrupt Cook County Bull-shit!

I'm a staunch Republican who happens to be pro-Union. I had two classes on Labor Relations at Loyola and it opened my eyes. Unions are only brought into a workplace voluntarily - the workers have to be so fed up getting the shaft at their jobs that they feel that they need the protection. It is no small feat to get a union into a shop. It ultimately comes down to how an employer treats its employees that determines if a union will stick or not.
Any old time Copppers will tell you how bad it was prior to getting FOP representation -
1. stand a post until relieved by a superior - if you were at that post for 14 hours, you'd only get paid for 8.
2. dump you anywhere in the city without a moments notice.
3. summarily cancel your comp time hours that you'd banked. A copper I know had 300+ hours on the books and came in one day and the radio room guy said that "per the commander, you can only carry 72 hours. Your comp bank is now 72." No questions - no recourse.

Second, WalMart is unjustly demonized. Other companies operate exactly as WalMart does - Target, Lowes, Home Depot, Cosco ... the difference? WalMart is run by a conservative Republican. Cosco, for example is run by a Democrat. Coincidence? I don't think so. Everything doesn't boil down to partisan politics but in the case of WalMart I think that the case can be made that the MSM has unfairly targeted them without asking the hard-questions of other big-box stores/franchises.
I would welcome a few WalMarts within the city limits. I know that Ace and TrueValue stores always whine when a Home Depot opens up because they feel that the big box is competitively unfair. But it isn't that simple and the convenience-type stores have their own niche to fill and a solid customer-base so they have nothing to worrry about.

Too much freedom is just enough for me.

Supposedly, Finance printed up the W-2s but more than half showed ONLY half of what federal and state taxes were taken out. Some showed TWICE as much taxes. This means lots of people will have TO PAY instead of getting money back.

Also, many are not showing deferred comp payments.

We can but a beef into the federal government but what good will that do? After all this is a city whose mayor ILLEGALLY tore up a fucking airport (Meigs field).. WHAT WAS THE PENALTY??? If the city does not give the W-2s out til 20 Feb what can the Feds do?

Times that by 10-12 thousand and thats a lot of money??? where does it go? And when did i sign up? and can I back out???

The following Topic 154 is is from the IRS website. The city's deadline is 31 January 2006. I would not trust your final 2005 pay stub(The amounts on mine appear understated) to file income tax. The boys at the FOP should get a heads up on this. I know I will loose interest if I can't file my taxes on time. I will be calling the IRS on 01 February 2006.

Topic 154 - Forms W-2 and Form 1099–R (What to Do if Not Received)

In general, employers/payers must provide employees with Form W-2 (PDF), Wage and Tax Statement; Form 1099-R (PDF), Distributions From Pensions, Annuities, Retirements or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRA's, Insurance Contracts; Form 1099-INT (PDF), Interest Income, or Form 1099-MISC (PDF), Miscellaneous Income, by January 31 of the current year. Employers/payers have the option of making the information available on a website. However, if you leave your employer before the end of the calendar year, and request your Form W-2 (PDF) or Form 1099-R (PDF) at that time, your employer must provide your form within 30 days of your request. If you do not receive Form W–2 or Form 1099–R, you still must file your return on time.

Therefore, after January 31 of the current year, if you have not received Form W–2 or Form 1099–R, or received an incorrect form or information, contact your employer/payer. You may not have received your form because of an incorrect or incomplete address. Be sure to verify the address used if already mailed. If the form was returned to your employer/payer because of an incorrect address, or never mailed, and the employer/payer intends to issue or re-mail, allow a reasonable amount of time for this action to occur before calling the IRS for help.

If you have not received your Form(s) W-2 by early February the IRS will help you obtain the missing forms. Call 1–800–829–1040. Be prepared to provide your name, address (including zip code), phone number, Social Security Number, and dates of employment and the name, address (including zip code), and phone number of the employer/payer.

The IRS will send the employer/payer a Form 4598, Form W-2, 1098 or 1099 Not Received, Incorrect, or Lost. You will receive a copy, along with Form 4852 (PDF), Substitute for Form W–2 or Form 1099–R, and a Form 1040X (PDF), Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. If you do not receive the Form W-2 or Form 1099–R in sufficient time to file timely, you may file using Form 4852.

If you later receive a Form W-2 or Form 1099–R, after your return is filed using substitute information, and the information differs from the information reported on your return, you must file an amended return. For more information on amending your return, refer to Topic 308.

Thanks for the information above about calling the IRS if we don't get our W-2's...SCC you should post that number on 01 Feb so everyone can call. Maybe since nobody at Finance, Comptroller, FOP, PBPA, or the Hall will listen we can bring in the FEDS to look at this dumbsh*t.

I am advising that nobody trust their last check stub. It will only have half of your pay from the time the Comptroller's office took over screwing up our pay.

Since this thread has deviated to the subject of pay...I am a Sergeant and just recived my little letter telling me they screwed up my quarterly check which I already knew. According to this letter I won't receive any quarterly checks for the rest of the year because they are going to take it out of my next two checks but since they paid me 3x my regular quarterly I still owe them money after the next two checks.

Now I know people will say "you got paid at least" but like everyone else thoese extra checks are nice to receive. They always come at a good time. Why oh Why won't the PBPA or FOP file a lawsuit or a grievance against the city for incompetance in the Comptrollers office. We are promised to get paid for working that is our contract. These people are screwing up with no recourse. We get no interest, no bonus, no getting your pizza free if it doesn't get to you in 30 minutes or less...

I challenge someone from FOP or PBPA to actually answer these questions: Why are we not holding these people to task for their screwups? They will take money from us in a heartbeat for our screwups. Why are we not getting compensated because they screwed up? We get no interest, no points, no nothing. In the old days our connections (in the outfit) would be finding these people and explaining how the world works to them. I have had enough....I am fed up with inmates running the asylum.

I apologize for my rant but I needed to vent but I am sure there are others out there who feel like I do. Thank You SCC for giving me a place to scream.

Where they wanted to put the Walmart in the city was in a low-income neighborhood. Who are they going to put out of business there? Koreans and Arabs who do not hold citizenship here and sell their goods at inflated prices! Good riddance to them, I say. What do those stores contribute to the community? Those stores are also usually staffed with others who are not citizens either.

A previous poster brought up True Value and Ace. Both of those stores sell their goods at inflated prices. I welcome a store that keeps a smaller profit margin per product and makes it up by selling volume. That is good for the consumer. We as middle class individuals need stores like this. Why shop at Jewel or Dominicks when there is a Cub Foods or a Food For Less nearby? Do you enjoy paying more for the same product? If so, continue to do so.

This is supposed to be a capitalistic society we live in. Supply and demand should set the market. Instead, we have government butting in, not allowing a business in town because they don't like a non-union shop (the same people that fight our unions every contract time). We have governments telling builders that they have to set aside property for "affordable housing". If you can't afford to live there, too damn bad! There are other place to live. Sounds like baby-steps toward communism to me. Lefty, you can be quite proud of "your gorvernment".

In the last 5 -10 years, all within 5 miles of each other, 2 Home Depots, a Menards and a Lowes have opened in Niles and Skokie within walking distance of the northwest Chicago border.

There are still a few Ace Hardwares that are surviving, but ALL of the independant, mom and pop hardware/ paint stores in the area are now gone. It sucks, but I have to admit that I have gone to the big box stores to save anywhere from $5 to $15 on a gallon of paint, compared to the mom and pop stores.

You don't think Best Buy hasn't killed off more than a few mom and pop shops, or local TV repairmen?

Capitalisim at it's finest, actually. Only the strong survive, might = right, yadda yadda yadda...

And to the people that complain about Wal-Mart's sale of Chinese made goods: seriously, where would you find clothing that ISN'T made outside the US?
