Union Dinosaurs Dying Out

Over 1 million construction workers are leaving the AFL-CIO according to the New York Slimes (hat tip Captain's Quarters). The Laborers and Operating Engineers broke with the national organization and formed their own union, incorporating some of the previous five unions that split with the AFL-CIO last year.

We quoted this stat last year at some point: Unions gave $20 million to Republican candidates during the last election cycle. Over the same time period, the unions gave Democrats $225 BILLION. That is not a misprint - $20 million vs $225 Billion. And with 40% of union workers voting Republican, that $225 Billion isn't representing THEIR interests, which is what unions are supposed to do.

Do you think we should look at where some of our monthly dues go, such as for what, to whom, and lastly, what is the long term benefit? How about putting a cap on union dues?

Change the medical system to a 12 sick day per year system. Too many of you dogs abuse the system. Why pay you for injuries you do off duty? Falls, car accidents, etc. You have a heart attack at home and get paid? Such baloney!

again with the off topic B.S. all you liberals quit carrying on about the Veep, that's why it's called an accident dufus. if that was any other old man that shot another on a hunting trip we probably would'nt of even heard about it, give it a rest already will ya. IT WAS AN ACCIDENT! end of story.

back to the topic at hand ... all you young bucks on the job have been brain washed from your days in the academy, ever since the Charlie Roberts/Sam Christian cabal took over that place it has steadily gone down hill. turning out boat loads of sea going snitches. always tricking off on the oldtimers to the boss.

one PPO has even got the W/C's personal cell phone on his speed dial, sending text messages back an forth, taking photographs with his cell phone and rushing in to tell the head snitch all about it.

Jeeeeez what has this job come to. none of what these so - called new generation of police officers wouldve been tolerated in the past. so wake up and read between the lines, there's a whole lotta union busting going on and before you know it all us "dinosaurs" will be gone and you'll be al out of excuses.

and yeah i staying anonymous because i know if didnt that same group of snitches would be calling the W/C at her house to rat me out. "you know who you are"

Some of the wonderful things about being over 35yo:
When you slip on ice, you're bones really do snap. What doesn't snap tears, hello rehab.
Cancer becomes a regular check up at the doc. (prostrate / breast)
Hello hypertension!
Watch the donuts, diabetes awaits.
Watch your weight, oh yea, wait you can't read the scale without glasses now.
Clogged arteries. Heart attacks.
Not to mention the build up of stress, stress related diseases.
Depression, your mental health starts to fade from being too tired, too long, thinking about too much on this job.
You should be cherishing the year of medical days. 07.58 Don't be jealous someone is sick, its going to happen to you too. If you are proud that you never hit the medical, that's wonderful, we are proud of you too and we try not to be jealous of your good health. There are more legitimate medical users than abusers.

First of all the Democratic party is the party of the POLITICAL CLASS, THE BLACKS, AND THE GAYS AND LESBIANS. That is why the working man and woman have put the Republicans in charge of running the country and they will be in charge until the Democrats return to the working man/woman.
Second the reason why this department is such a joke as far as labour is concerned is because we have that silly ass medical program.
True some people with cancer get to collect for year while they are leaving this world, however benefits could make up for that. The medical is set up for abuse and that is exactly what happens. There is no way we should give it up without getting something in return. We have more people on the medical then any other department. Probably more than any other organization. I've known officer who have spent more time on the medical than on the job. It's ridiculous and all it does (with the exception of the few who are terminally ill) is screw those who don't abuse it. It is set up for abuse by the polical hacks who run this department (that's what the people who run this department are; polical hacks, handpicked by Daley himself despite what you might believe about the testing process)for their little pets, and they have a shit load of pets. Let's trade the medical for full dental, eye, retiree health, bigger pay raise. FOP are you listening?

Bottom line on unions is that they have killed themselves...the days of gimme, gimme, gimme are over.

We can see it ourselves that the Dept may only go a couple of percent on a raise and then they raise our health care to pretty much match it so what have we gained.

In this day and age of the global economy, there are places that can do it cheaper and just as good if not better than us. People don't want to hear that but it is the truth.

Chicago has lost convention business to other cities because the unions prices here have made it impossible for the conventioneers to justify the expenses. Conventions are going to Vegas because they don't have to pay some flunky $50 to plug an electrical cord in the outlet.

Our cost of living in Chicago is going through the roof because of the union labor. It cost more for a laborer so the City has to tax us more to pay their laborers. The manufacturers have to charge more for goods to cover their laborers and the additional taxes. It is a vicious circle.

I hate to say it but FOP and PBPA and it's members better wise up. Go for benefits in lieu of a raise. Go for more vacation days, more personal days, more baby furlugh days, etc. Non tangibles aren't taxed. I would rather have my medical premiums stay put and make the same cash than make more cash but have to give it back because my medical is higher.

I know people are going to blast me but you got to look at the bigger picture.

Our medical costs keep going up because we are paying for EVERYONE ELSE who goes to the hospital and doesn't pay. Labor unions have nothing to do with it.

In L.A. ERs are closing down because of all the uninsured illegal aliens. Here in Chicago Advocate Healthcare is going to turn Bethany Hospital in 011 into a nursing home. Any guesses as to why?

We as a labor organization have to fight these politicians for "benefits" that on a different day these same politicians call a "right" for those in society who do nothing.

We deserve every penny, every "benefit", every vacation day for the work we do. The vast majority of coppers are hard working everyday kind of guys just trying to make this a better world for their families and neighbors. Please don't compare us to the mobbed-up political leeches that plug in electrical cords for $50 an hour.

After stepping back and looking at the big picture I've decided this fall when I'm out bird huntin' in Northern Wisconsin I'll leave my golden retriever at home and take a lawyer out to retrieve the downed birds. What the heck, this can be a small start in the right direction.

This just in:

It has been reported that the "Hunting trip" was an actual cover up. Today the White house has admitted that the Cheney "Hunting trip" was actually a CIA hit and that the agency had no one who could get close enough to the lawyer without bringing suspicion on them. Cheney volunteered for the job since he was old "friends" with the target. The White house appoligized for not calling everyone listed in the phone book the minute it happened.

Immediately after the hit black helicopters swooped in and wisked Cheney off and took him to Area 51 for debriefing. It was there that the blame would be put on the French-Canadian-Americans of African-American decent who could prove they decended from slaves who were shipwrecked off Nova Scotia around the year 1854. The same African-Americans who when trying to get back to Africa commandeered a ship and sailed back only to find that they ended up in Russia and later became Communists with left ways of thinking. The same ones who's offspring emigrated to the U.S. through Mexico in order to make the government pay for all their needs with social programs geared towards not making anyone self-sufficient and to perpetuate generations of welfare recipients. Paid for by the hard-working middle class and supported by the liberal Democrats who only think about votes and everyone knows that when you pay them to make babies and those babies will pay you back with a vote!
I knew it was a conspiracy! MY President must have been behind it from the beginning! Way to go Lincoln!

Oh and it was a hunting accident nothing more. You left wingers and Dumbmocrats can't find anything else to go after the Republicans for so you jump on this. Every year someone gets shot and possibly killed in hunting accidents. If anything this proves it can happen to anyone. Grow up, if you worried about your own city like you worry about this you wouldn't have the problems you've got. Wake up!!!

PBA PU$HED CUT

By MURRAY WEISS Criminal Justice Editor
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Low salaries have prompted some NYPD rookies to consider welfare, The Post reported yesterday. But the slashing of recruits' salaries was suggested by a union negotiator according to a written opinion by Mayor Bloomberg's representative on the arbitration panel, Carole O'Blenes.

February 17, 2006 -- MAYOR: UNION OK'D COP PAY
A negotiator for the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association accepted an arbitrator's proposal that included cutting rookie cops' salaries during last year's bruising contract fight with the city despite a contrary recommendation by Mayor Bloomberg's own labor negotiator, documents show.
"I was not in favor of the reduced salary schedule for new hires and urged an alternative funding mechanism," wrote Carole O'Blenes, the mayor's panelist on the three-member state Public Employment Relations Board (PERB).

In a page-one footnote to her opinion, O'Blenes went on to say that "ironically" the PBA insisted there was a recruitment problem at the NYPD — but it was their "PBA-appointed panel member" who "urged" the panel to accept "the reduced salary schedule and the Chair [Eric Schmertz] accepted that position."

That characterization was vehemently denied yesterday by PBA president Patrick Lynch as the war of words heated up with Bloomberg over who was responsible for the startling $11,000 reduction in the NYPD's starting salary that prompted rookies to apply for food-stamp relief.

"Make no mistake about this," Bloomberg railed in response to a front-page Post story describing underpaid rookies seeking the $7,500 food stipend.

"The fact that the PBA, the fact the monies were taken from new recruits to the Police Department and given to those people who have worked there for a long period of time, was something that the PBA signed on to," the mayor said. "It was also done at the request of the PBA."

But Lynch fired back that "the simple truth is that the city pushed for a lower starting salary for police officers at the table during negotiations, during mediation and in arbitration and the arbitrator finally gave them what wanted."

The PBA insisted it signed off on the controversial pact after being given a choice of two unpleasant settlement offers from Schmertz — accept a starting salary cut to $25,100 in one proposal that Jay Waks, the PBA's PERB panelist, called "draconian" and "vicious," or swallow another proposal with even more drastic givebacks from current members.

In the end, it opted for the former of the two bitter pills that included a 10.25 percent raise over two years for New York's Finest.

Meanwhile, union sources told The Post that three of the 10 rookies who have filed for food stamps are fathers struggling to put food on their tables.

2:14 is a IDIOT! Anyone who would consider bargaining away our medical days has a screw loose. Before coming to CPD,I worked for a PD that allowed you only 12 sick days a year. That's fine if you contract the occasional cold or flu,But heaven help you if you had a serious illness or suffered a major injury.I can tell you from experience my former co-workers and I threw many a benefit to help a fellow P.O.pay his/her mortgage and keep food on the table. The flip side of this argument is that there are some P.O.'s who abuse this precious benefit. And to that I say punish the abusers! You don't "Throw the baby out with the bath water." I'd rather have the benefit and not need it than need it and not have it.

To all the FOP bashers; I'll be the first to admit this bargaining unit isn't perfect,But we enjoy some pretty good benefits that people in the private sector would DIE for. The medical program being one of them.Could FOP do more? Sure. There's lots of things that can be done to improve our working conditions. But I like to look at the glass as "half full." If you don't think we've got it good,Connsider this; You could be working for NYPD at 25,000 starting salary.(No disrepect to our brothers & sisters in N.Y.)We could be dealing with a mayor like Bloomberg.Daley doesn't seem so bad in comparison.(I can't believe I typed that.)
