What About the Police?

Someone in the comments section suggested we link to and write about this:
  • Chicago firefighters and paramedics who put their lives on the line every day are getting shortchanged: They're owed thousands of dollars apiece because of payroll mistakes that have dragged on for more than a year.
OK. So what are we - chopped liver? Our payroll issues have been dragging on for quite a while: promoted people not getting their raises; step raises not being awarded; CTA special checks being late or worse; not to mention the recent snafu of bosses checks being paid at higher rates than what they actually were and the assorted W-2 screw ups. If we recall, the union even sued to get interest on the missing CTA money.

Who else has a horror story? We haven't heard of people having to take out loans or such, but lives have been disrupted. Where is our publicity?

Farrell for president!

I second the nomination, preferably for SUPERINTENDENT OF POLICE!

Unlike today's brass and politicians, JOHN FARRELL is the whole package: brains, courage, integrity, pride and to top it all off: humility, the admiration and respect of all.
Farrell is neither black, white or Hispanic. Farrell is BLUE!

20 years on the job a lot of goofy things happened, but there were somethings you could always count on:

1st & 16th. Special was on the 22nd and I forgot (sorry) when Overtime was paid, but it was after the period ended.

The only check that was ever screwed up was an OT check and that was only if an OT slip got lost or came in late. On those rare occasions, it was adjusted and it came in the next period.

But payroll checks WERE always on time and correct!

Now we have this new system and everything is screwy. The Finance Division of our department did a good job, but payroll is no longer their responsibility and it goes to city hall. Now everything is screwy.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Recent studies show a career in Law Enforcement reduces your life expectancy and causes significant medical problems in the future.

A change in lifestyle and reduced frequency of shifts is the only way to break the cycle and lead to a longer life expectancy and quality of life.

Chicago is the only Police Department in the nation to still work six days in a row, resulting in an average life span for its Officers of 60 years. In contrast Departments working 3 or 4 days in a row with 4 or 5 days off have an average life span of 80 years.

The Chicago FOP is in negotiations with the City of Chicago, in regards to changing the Police Departments work schedule, with a pilot program just completed in which Officers would work 4 or 5 days consecutively.

The City is claiming that in order to go forward with the new work schedule they would need to purchase more equipment and they do not have the money. Although a recent city council meeting just approved 500 million dollars for a new building claimed to be the tallest in the world.

Currently offered at the Chicago Police Academy, is an in service training class given by
Kevin M. Gilmartin, Ph.D. a behavioral sciences and management consultant specializing in law enforcement issues, Dr Gilmartin offers compelling arguments indicating that the current six days worked in a row by Chicago Police Officers is literally killing the Officers and contributing to the high suicide rate of Officers.

Dr Gilmartin may be just the expert testimony the Chicago FOP needs to address the Arbitrator and the City regarding adopting a work schedule that will allow our Police Officers the longevity and quality of life enjoyed by the rest of the citizens of Chicago.

-----------------------------------

The "problem" was that "the old" payroll system was written under some old computer language that was only under stood by a handful of people in the comptroller’s office.

That's why they came up with this "new Chipps payroll" system.

Perhaps the city should hire the programmers (at a premium cost) who designed the Chipps system to help get this thing running correctly.

Actually the national study had Chicago as a whole as the fattest in the nation to concure with the Mens Fitness study. So, stay at home on mommy's couch eatting your Hostess products as you watch reruns of Cops and C.S.I. you retard. I'de challenge you to a fitness test but your heart would probably explode from the strain of getting off that couch.

Payroll issue, the city wouldnt pay for the fix, so they decided to fix it themselves. Hence the mess. R we surprised, think not.

Your Union has to be there for you, and its up to each and everyone one of you to require it.
They know it and you should to.

The stance if we dont get calls, by the way more than at least (5) a random number; no problems are considered to be present.

Keep in mind their payroll has been affected as well. So their not blind but what you want, is a stronger voice; demand it in numbers and you shall receive.

If not you all know what to do. DONT VOTE STRAIGHT TICKETS.

Stay safe and keep your hats tipped to the front, please.

What's up guys. I'm currently a student at triton community college and I was thinking about becoming a Chicago cop. My friend, who is the police, told me I should check out this blogspot. Well, I did, and I must say that I am very dissappointed. Are all chicago cops this brutal, ignorant, cruel, and sadistic? This thread isn't so bad, but I've seen others on this site that make fun of gays, minorities, and even joke around about sex with animals. If this is the kind of stuff I got to look forward to on the dept., then maybe I'd be better off joining a suburban dept. Take care guys. I hope most of these posts are in jest.

LOL, Where ever you choose to go, dept that is your gonna see it all. No police agency is exempt.

What you need to be aware of are TROLLS, then the police humour. Society is society no matter where you are. College or the real working world.

Good Luck and we can always use balanced police officers.

What might your weight be? Pun intended.

Todd...I encourage you to join the Chicago Police Dept in fact I encorage you also to be #1 in your class so you can pick a district, ex. 015,011,010,025, or any shit southside district which ever you prefer. I guarantee, you live in a fantasy world until you deal with these gangbanger shithead, dope dealn muts, baby daddy momma drama, and up to the political hack bosses that shouldnt be. Dont let this be a deterrent to join CPD, overall in my eyes and in others this is a good job, its what you make of it. But if you cant take gettn your balls busted once in a while, and your feelings hurt then its time for you to look elsewhere for other employment opportunities. Remember... its what you make of it.

3/20/2006 02:11:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you like white picket fences and people who ask how your doing and really care then I advise you not to join the CPD. On the other hand if you want a job where you get to see some funny shit, have lots of freedom, get to kick somebody's ass (just because they pissed you off), not have to give a shit what the boss wants because he/she is usually some piece of political hack shit, get oppurtunities to work in plain clothes (gang and tact teams in some districts are looking for anyone with a pulse), get O.K. pay, work shitty hours (but the best medical in the world), work in a community like the ghetto were 99% of the population are shit heads so you don't care what happens, but you know you can go work in a slow district where you might actually care about the people you are policing then come on the CPD.
P.S. most Chicago cops are good people, some are not.

Been there done did the suburban copper thing.

Same type of coppers there: Nerds, macho-heads, ex-military, cowards, thieves, perverts, dumb-fucks, etc., etc.

You ARE guaranteed a much more diverse public and department in the CPD.

Initially, you'll have the option of working in one of 25 districts, and each is its own department.

You can try to be officer friendly or the crimefighter that most new officers dream of being.

Then burn out, take it easy and then start kicking ass all over again.

To Todd, you really can't be serious about cops beeing brutal, ignorant, cruel and whatever else you may think. You have not walked in OUR shoes! Ask your friend the police officer. I believe someone earlier told you that if you can't take some ribbin/joking or whatever ,then this is not a job for you. We are the garbage men of society(no offense to Streets&San) we do things that no one else is willing to do. And that is to Protect the little guy in society who cant stand up for himself for what ever reason. You will see parents burn beat and kill their babies and who do you think has to pick up the pieces and go on? WE DO! If you dont think you can stomach stuff like this then you ar barking up the wrong tree for a career! Sorry to everyone about this being long. Stay safe evereyone! 10-99
