Big Oops

  • Members of a South Side family said they were stunned, baffled and horrified when Chicago police raided their house and then ransacked it. Police said they were searching for guns and drugs. The problem is [...] they had the wrong house.
The Search Warrant reads 5621 S. Normal. The house that was raided is 5619. On one side is 5623 and on the other side 5617.

5621 doesn't exist.

As we understand Search Warrants (having done a few here and there AND having taken Chief Cline's class years ago - at least we think we might have), one of the first rules is verifying the address. Also, pictures of the house to be hit should be obtained. That way, everyone is on the same page. We have no idea how the SWAT Team is supposed to operate in conjunction with a District Warrant, but it seems there is a boatload of blame to be passed around on this one. The Affiant first of all. The Surveillance team second. The District Supervisor on scene and the SWAT Team leader. Get ready for some blowback AND some more training videos.

I've seen this happen a few times...this is just one of the ones that hit the press.

Not much will come of it, even though you'd think at the very least the tact sergeant/and or Lieutenant ( if he was even there ) should get dumped over something that serious.

Hopefully the Judge that signed it will remember the goofs that presented it to him, and obvioulsy lied, to get it signed.

They had a warrant for an address that doesn't exist, THAT is a BIG problem. Means they not only falsified their affidavit, but did sloppy, if any, investigation into the address and it's surrounding area before the warrant.

Honest mistakes are one thing. Straight up sloppy bullshit like this deserves a good spanking!

can't blame the SWAT team for this 1, whose ever warrant this was provided them with the address, photos and current discription of the house and we all know that the addresses are not always posted on the residence--- especially in the ghetto....

according to the video, I think swat is the only 1's in the dept with automatic weapons and flash bangs..... sounds like they did make the entry...... a little blame goes to the swat sgt, he should made sure the address on the warrant was good, not just go by description and photos....thats the problem when you rely on other people intell.....

Sounds to me like they hit the right house, but put the wrong numbers on the warrant. Its sometimes difficult to get the proper numbers when no house on the block has a visible address. That being said, they could have gone to the Cook County Assessor's web site for the address. Unfortunately, the photos are often unavailable.

I wouldn't be to hard on this team, as its a completely understandable error.

Too funny about Crotty & Dominick's. I had forgotten all about her. The only time I met her was about a year ago when I was at that Dominick's. When I was coming from the elevator one of the usual suspects was standing outside the south door shaking down the guilt ridden yuppies as they went in and out. When I was leaving 2 female P.O.'s were outside with the usual suspect and a M/2 yuppie. One of the P.O.'s was waving her arms around and yelling at the yuppie. So I walked out the door and stood a discreet distance away in case things went bad. The conversation went something in the way of, "WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE CALLING THE POLICE, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH." The P.O. who was doing the "talking" looked at me and yelled, "CAN I HELP YOU!" I told her I was off-duty P.O. and she yelled back, "WE DON'T NEED YOUR HELP!" I walked closer to her to apologize, but I really just wanted to see her nametag. Then I left. What a class act.

Yes you can blame swat. Address is on the front of the building! They even showed it on the news.
"Some warrants are just by descriptions of where the house is located."
Yeah, well this one had the address on it.
Plus these assholes did not notify the boss in 007 before the execution (Very bad form)and then high tailed it back up north with out letting anyone know. The "boss" who led this courageous effort refused to come back to talk to the homeowners and left it up to the District's Sergeants to handle. All around pompous foolishness. Sorry but it deserves ALL the criticism it is getting.

Just a little info on the warrant, know the guys that did it, good guys. Anyway, the bird that flipped for them pointed out the house and it was the house they hit. The house did not, I repeat did not have an address on it during the time it was pointed out, during the recon by either the affiant or swat and when it was served. They put the numbers on the house after they consulted with an attorney. They also trashed the house after the police left. It was the right house but they screwed up on the address. Shit happens.

Anyone else hear this new ghetto anthem?
I did a sound impound for some a-hole that was blaring this song. Here are the lyrics:
(sorry its kinda long but i thought it was pretty funny)

They see me rollin'
They hatin patrollin and tryna catch me ridin dirty

Tryn' ta catch me ridin dirty (4X)

My music so loud I'm swangin
They hopin' that they gone catch me ridin dirty

Tryn' ta catch me ridin dirty (4X)

[Chamillionaire]
Grindin to see if they can see me lean
I'm tense, so it ain't easy to be seen
When you see me ride by they can see these gleam
And my shine on the deck and the TV screen
Now ridin with a new chick, she like "Hold up"
Next to the Playstation controlla
It's a full clip and my pistolla, send a jacker into a coma
Girl you ain't know I'm crazy like Krayzie Bone
Just tryna bone, ain't tryna have no babies
Ride clean as hell, so I pull in ladies
Laws on patrol and you know they hate me (Know ya hate me)
Music turned up all the way to the maximum
I got speakers, some niggaz tryna jack for some
But we packin somethin and what we have for um
We'll have a nigga locked up in a maximum, security cell
I'm grippin oak (Oak)
Music loud and I'm tippin slow (Slow)
Twins steady twistin like "Hit this dough"
D's behind and it's in re-throwed
Windows down, gotta stop pollution
City change just like, "Who is that producin?"
That's the Play N Skillz when we out and cruisin
Got warrants in every city except Houston/ But I still ain't losin

[Chorus: Chamillionaire]
They see me rollin'
They hatin patrollin and tryna catch me ridin dirty

Tryn' ta catch me ridin dirty (4X)

My music so loud I'm swangin
They hopin' that they gone catch me ridin dirty

Tryn' ta catch me ridin dirty (4X)

[Krayzie Bone]
I've been (Cenz.) and smokin, holy shit cause I really can't focus
I gotta get it home before the po-po's scope this
Big ole Excursion just swerve'n, all up in the curb'n
A nigga be sippin on the Hennessey and the Gin again
its in again we in the wind
Don't wanna hold up while I puff on the blunt
I roll another one up, and leave it like we ain't givin a fuck
I got a blunt up in my right hand
40 0z. in my lap, freezin my balls
Rollin up a tree, green leaves and all
Comin' pretty deep me and my dogs
Yo' I gotta hit the back streets
Wanted by the six-five and I got heat
glock, glock shots to the block, we creep creep
Pop pop hope cops dont see me on the low key
With no regard for the law, we dodge 'em like, "Fuck 'em all"
But I won't get caught up and brought up on charges for none of y'all
Keep a gun in car and a blunt to spark
wonder if you want nigga it poppin dog
Ready or not, we bust shots off in the air
Krayzie Bone and Chamillionaire (Millionaire)

[Chorus: Chamillionaire]
They see me rollin'
They hatin patrollin and tryna catch me ridin dirty

Tryn' ta catch me ridin dirty (4X)

My music so loud I'm swangin
They hopin' that they gone catch me ridin dirty

Tryn' ta catch me ridin dirty (4X)

[Chamillionaire]
You wouldn't think it so, I tryed ta let cha go
Turn on my blanker light, and then I swang it slow
and they upset for fa sho
Cause they think they know
that they catchin me with plenty of the drank and dro' (No)
So they get behind me, tryna catch my tags
Look in my rearview and they smilin
Thinkin they'll catch me in the wrong, they keep tryin (Keep tryin)
steady denyin that it's racial profilin
Houston, Texas you can check my tags (Tags)
Pull me over, try to check my slab (Slab)
Glove compartment, gotta get my cash
cause the crooked cops'll try to come up fast
Bein the balla that I am, I'm talk to them not givin a
damn about them not feelin my attitude
When they realize I ain't even ridin dirty
Bet you'll be leavin with an even madder mood (Hahaha)
Then I'll laugh at you then I'll have to cruise
Ya my number two on some old school DJ Screw
You can't arrest me, plus you can't sue
This is a message to the laws, tell 'em "We hate you"
I could be tough tell 'em that they shoulda known
Tippin down, sittin crooked on my chrome
Bookin my phone, findin a chick I wanna bone
Like they couldn't stop me
I'm bout to pull up at your home, and it's on

[Chorus: Chamillionaire (2X)]
They see me rollin'
They hatin patrollin and tryna catch me ridin dirty

Tryn' ta catch me ridin dirty (4X)

My music so loud I'm swangin
They hopin' that they gone catch me ridin dirty

Tryn' ta catch me ridin dirty (4X)

[Outro]

To 9:55:06,drew the warrant? Meaning going throu proper procedures to obtain a search, since you have no authority to enter a dwelling without a judges signature on a warrant(constitutional Law) You draw the warrant from the Judge!!!! aka getting permission.. according to new special orders, you must have a Lt. with you on a search warrant, so what ever unit got the warrant, their LT. should of notified the on duty watchcommader, not SWAT... our only job is to enter residence, secure it and its occupants and then turn over to the unit who got the warrant--- we do not search for guns and drugs, only people....if those people happen to have guns and drugs on them then it gets turn over to unit who got the warrant. Flash bangs used when there is a high probability that the occupants will shot at us, ergo violent convicted felon, or automatic weapons are believed to be in the house... we don't abuse this tool... Oh thats right you would never use them if you could because you are invinsible and you are way tuffer than the bad guys..... You use what ever the dept allows you to use--- end of story, why? because WE go home to our family every night, not the morgue... if thats alright with you

Thanks for the warrant and con law class-obviously you've never been in a foot chase that ended up in a house, or ever taken the time to get a warrant, because you have absolutely no clue. And the "new Special Order" about Lt's? Haven't been doing many search warrants I guess, because it's not new. You also have horrible grammar, which I guess is okay because you're phone call didn't care, and apparently READING isn't a top priority of SWAT. At least not reading numbers. YES, the affiant and both the Swat supervisor and Lt. who came along will share this liability. That's the way it goes.

*F* the "victims" in this case!

They probably didn't have an address placard on the front of their 'crib' - just like the other 80% of the residences on their block who don't.

If they can't be bothered to identify their own address, then why should the CPD be held accountable?

Just more Woo-Woo and another chance to sue the City of DeepPockets. It will also be another race-based storyline for Mary Mitchell to use in her column.

Here's a great argument for the Commander of SWAT, and the Lt. that have been begging for the right equipment to do these high risk entries. Digital cameras and video drive-by's of the target location as part of their pre-op briefing.
What did the department give em, (2) broken flat screens. And the Department took (2) of their "blacked-out" vans away from them.
The SWAT team took flight for "when SHTF" plus the barricaded people stuff and hostages, but the Department won't spend a dime on em.

Not until something bad happens......

God forbid a PO gets hurt.......

Never said it was the Lt that gets the warrant, what I said is that Lt has to be on ever search warrant---as far as being a new special order, it must be new to the dumbass that did not know a Lt is required to go on every warrant. So, the argument is now that the residents of the house had extra address numerals laying around the house just in case something like this would happen.
