Lieutenants Exam?
In the comments section, someone has claimed that the notice came out for the Lieutenant Exam. We did hear it was coming this year. If you hop back to our January Archives, you'll see that once again, SCC predicted a Lieutenants Exam this year. Granted, predicting that one was like shooting fish in a barrel, bit you don't get to be recognized as a prophet by getting them all wrong.
We, of course, will be skipping the exam and going right to Exempt like so many of our fellow officers in recent years. Why waste time going through the ranks when you can just get a gold star for being buddies with the big guy?

This is a first. Insiders believe that many of the current high ranking exempts will be retiring soon. This is their chance to have their kids, lovers and ass kissers be promoted to Lt. before they exit the department. Imagine a P.O. being meritorious becoming a Lt. overnight. This department is becoming a laughing stock to other police agencies across the country. And remember once they are Lt, it's only a pen stroke away to make them an exempt member. Nice to raid our pension fund by giving people who only paid P.O. rate to collect a large pension with only 4 years of higher pay!

Just a somber note to begin the weekend. The Detective Division lost another one of their own last night. Tom LoConte, from Area 1 R/B/T, died after struggling for the past year with cancer. He had been at Loyola Medical center for the past few months and had received bone marrow and stem cell transplants to try and restore what he had lost due to the chemotherapy. Tom was a devoted Cubs fan and worked in 009 before making detective 2 1/2 years ago. Tom is survived by his wife Jennifer and his two young children. Please say a prayer for his family. No news on the services yet.

I am 5 out on the old sgt list and got tired of reading the back and forth crap on this board about the next sgt class, so I called personnel and asked for the Commander himself. He confirmed that the Mayor said no to a class of sergeants during the Summer and that it would logically follow that they would simply draw from the new list in the Fall. Alhough I am disappointed at least I have a REAL answer.
30 out of 100 pos in a competitive test to determine the best and brightess are given a position based on "merit" and the qualities that allow this selection is not defined and the people selected on "merit" are embarassed to admit there are merit and our union does not demand that these people be exposed unbelievable total bullshit

Speaking as a merit lieutenant, let us just set the record straight: no merit is losing sleep at night because they think they are living a lie. They are sleeping better on the new 900.00 AirComfort mattress they are now able to afford. They also sleep better knowing they have the funds to provide tutuion to those expensive high schools for their kids. If a proper standard was the basis for merit not only would there be no stigma attached like there is now but the person given the promotion would be proud.

Be interesting to see what happens with the Merit System in light of the recent convictions in Federal Court. I wonder if anyone is a bit nervous, as this certainly should cause some spincter muscles to tighten. How many "merit" promotions of those who have never even had an honorable mention, but are either politically connected, or close to the inner circle of "butt boys" Pat Fitzgerald vows that this is only the beginning... and I hope that when he broadens this investigation, he includes the Police Department. The "merit" system as it has been utilized, certainly qualifies. Would be interesting to see what happens to the Merit System if this did happen. Might actually be utilized as designed, to help those who deserve a promotion for actions performed in the line of duty, as opposed to helping those politically connected, and sons of supervisors.
I made sergeant off the '93 test (the last one that was even close to legit). I don't have a degree, so I cannot be a lieutenant. I'm OK with that.
Merit promotions? What I would give to see waht meritorious things a few of these rapidly rising wonders have done. Merit detective to merit sergeant to merit lieutenant, and one to captain. So what great things have they shown? What great deeds on the street have they shown? What great academic achievements have they shown?
Merit promotions are bullshit. Maybe out of every class, ONE, Maybe ONE is a true "merit" promotee....someone who really accomplished something extraordinary, the rest are clout babies.
I don't begrudge clout babies from using the resources they have, I begrudge a system that legitimizes it under the guise of "merit" and expects everyone to believe it.
The emporer's new clothes......that's what merit promotions are. If we must keep merit promotions, then ONE bite of the merit apple per career. At least then it will be someone acceptable. Until then, it's all bullshit!

Obviously, you cannot even reason through the post if you compare meritorious promotions to ducking early, etc. But you wouldn't know that when all you did prior to your meritorious promotion was stock shelves at the carcenaria.
