Finally, Someone Making Sense

Dennis Byrne, a Tribune editorial writer that we agree with about as often as we disagree with him, writes this article Monday that takes certain segments of society to task for misguided outrage:
  • Residents of the Near North Side Cabrini-Green low-income housing project may have a lot to complain about, but not the shooting of a 14-year-old boy who menaced police officers with a gun.

It doesn't matter that the boy was wielding "only" a BB gun that happened to look like the real thing. When you show police officers any kind of weapon, fake or otherwise, you shouldn't be outraged when cops defend themselves. Even if the weapon can "only" fire a projectile at 400 feet a second.
Go read the whole thing, for it actually makes sense. And that is a rarity in the media nowadays.

How about a thread on Commander Matthews and the now infamous 019th District invasion to rescue his son?

Can anybody relate to the fact that P.O.'s have seconds to react??? I've been through the BB-gun trail and I sit there and think of what could have happened to the offender I was responding to....Dont blame the police....I blame poor parenting....raise your kids and dont have people who dont care about your kids raise them with shitty values.....

Dennis Byrne, holy shiite, you stepped up to the plate, knowing full well you may be excommunicated by your peers but, I got your back. May not mean much now, but, thanks.

Great article. Surprised it got printed. It is almost comical how politically correct, left leaning and intellectually empty the media in general is. Say what you want about talk radio and Fox News-they and other things (blogs) offer a nice outlet for information not controlled by the left. Those leftys who so hypocriticaly demand rights REALLY don't want anyone else to have free speech. Just ask our resident lefty the Castro supporter. The Tribune showed a tiny bit of what could really bring around change in the black communitty-the truth.

No comment from Donahue or the $2000 a month FOP mouth piece. The commentary will be when the membership throws Donahue (aka Nolan) and his flunkies out next time.

Important proposals to vote on in September! Don't let the FOP ram these two down our throats before they are themselves ousted! Read them, make an informed decision, vote!

Does anyone remember (and correct me if my memory is faulty) but several years ago there was an incident or two like this. Back when the FATS system was being utilized at the academy. Weren't a few reporters and other news personel invited to take part in some "shoot/don't shoot" training scenarios? And from what I recall all performed very poorly. I just remember one quote in the paper something to the tune of "I don't know how anyone could react that fast". Maybe it's time to show them again.

if that was a white commander storming into 5 pushing everyone around with his gang banger son (who is a banger with a badge) he would be fired and we'd all be in racial sensitivity training! this department is a joke!

Dennis,

Great article. My most sincere appreciation goes out to you for printing something that will probably never see the light of day again.

My favorite sign from the protest was "Police = Terrorists". Personally, having worked in the area as a police officer, I always felt it was the gun-toting, gang-banging dope dealers that were the terrorists. Evidently I must have been mistaken. While I admit that some nefarious activity has been attributed to police officers (Burge, etc...), I can't for the life of me figure out why every time something happens, it's always the same rhetoric. A bit of free advice for the protesters: Pick something that happened recently. And for those who claim nothing was done, Burge was fired! As far as jail time goes, that's another story. But, the statute of limitations is for everyone, not just your friends.
A last bit of trivia for you Dennis to end with. How many bullet holes are in the Fire Department building at the corner of Larrabee and Division and who was responsible and why? And, to answer your question, no, it wasn't the police!!!

hello people. the kids family is one of the MAIN criminal family's that run Cabrini. makes sense where he learned to carry a fake gun or real around with him, let alone point it at the police. Good job to the police. thumbs down to the media and the dept big wigs that put their skirts on and let the thugs from cabrini rant and rave while we all stood around and did nothing.

Can you believe someone asked me if the police had to shoot this animal (14 year old from the green)5 times. My reply was "obviously not enough".

I'm not able to to get the article from the tribune. Can someone post it if it is not too long.

Thanks!
