Rumors We've Heard

Or seen published here. Or made up. Who knows?
  • One more class of Lieutenants this fall. How many is anyone's guess.
  • Class size for the new Sergeants runs from 50 to 75.
  • The suspension time that is going to be handed out for the incident in 015 is going to be like nothing that has ever been seen before. There might be some cell phone video attached to this that is going to really hammer some people.
  • The Special Operations Saga is going to get bigger - up to 8 more people involved.
  • Rumor has it that the Department is about to go on a tear of slashing overtime expenditures again. Tens of millions of dollars worth of overtime cuts. Better get that Federal Airport money while it's being offered because they're going to cut it everywhere else.

any news on the detectives list?

I had heard October.

With OT, wasn't there an order out when we went to the automated court notification system, that a desk sgt would have to call the ASA if there were multiple notifications for the same case to find out who was absolutely needed to put on the case and then tell the nonessentials not to show up to court. They'll reinforce the "only one officer" policy to process a late pinch, and if they could figure out how to do a key date on felony narcotics, they will.

So what else is new regarding OT?
So few people are getting it now, I can only imagine where these cuts will likely be made. If they want to keep up the HIGH stats on homicide clearances that the Dept. pats itself on the back with on a regular basis, then they'd best leave the OT alone. On the other hand, the Dept. will HAVE to attack OT within the Det. division itself if they're going to make any meaningful cuts. The truth is, most of the younger guys and gals on this job would rather be able to leave early than to make OT.

Slashing overtime for those who would want it yet forcing 9 man teams to work days off at time-and-a-half two days per week. I would love to see the actual numbers. I figure even if it's one quarter of the districts that's 8 teams x 8 P.O.'s per team = 64 P.O.'s x 12 hours overtime minimum = 768 hours x 2 days per week = 1536 hours for P.O.'s. And then add the 8 x 12 x 2 = 184 hours at Sgt pay. But don't pay a second P.O. for 3 or 4 hours overtime for a robbery pinch. The logic just boggles the mind.

Are you kidding? OT is $$ in the bank. You earn it at one salary, and it makes a nice check when you retire, when you are at a higher rate of pay. Most people with families WOULD rather be off, but the thought that you can have that check at the end of the rainbow is a plus.
The airport people are laughing all the way to the bank! 12 hour days! Cha-ching!

If o.t. is an issue than get rid of felony review (which is only known in Cook County and no where else in the country), let po's lodge certain felony charges like burglary, auto theft, uuw. Anything requiring follow-up hand over to the detectives, make the various cmo offices handle the paper work they should (all cmo's don't function as well as others)

Live within your means? Well what does that mean? I dont have a boat, a 500$ K house, a 30$K car nor do I have any children so explain to me why its so hard for me to live with the basics(or means). I know why, because I choose to live in the city and become a police officer. Dont ever knock P.O.'s who are willing to make arrests and get O.T. to better their lives alittle. We dont make hundreds of thousands of dollars and a very select few will ever make Sgt let alone Lt., Comm, Deputy,etc...etc. to see that $120.130, 0r 150 a year. I say if you wanna be in court all day and work cta, cha, tara and airport then kudos to you! Remember there are only a few hundred "workers" in this city that actually go above and beyond so why not let them reap the benefits?! Sick and tired of people always shitting on the people who choose to work. Whether its from bosses, downtown or fellow workers the "working police" always get the boot in the ass and the short end of the stick so let us make our measly extra $10/20K a year. You might be happy working the desk, lock-up or the wagon but there are some who dont so piss off and go back to work and let me make some extra $$ to live a little better.

Rumor has it,That if you as a police officer, and on a mission down town, and working a anti-terrisom mission and ordered to patrol the sears tower.Head of security, for the sears tower will demand that you check in with them first, and you will not be allowed,to walk around the building,or use the public sidwalk without the approvel of the head of security.A officer than confronted this so called head of security,at which time the head of security, made his phone call to his politically connected friends and the mission on his building was cancelled. Who runs this city, not the police dept.

Sure, saving that O.T. on the books will earn a higher rate of pay down the line. However, your taxes will also be higher.

Don't fool yourself, when you cash in those thousands of hours, Uncle Sam will be right there to take it away ( like in the 38 to 46% rate ). Oops, there goes your money to the Gov't.

Don't squander your time, enjoy it now while you are still healthy and able to enjoy it. The best days of your life are right now, and not when you retire ( if your able to ).

Take your family on a good vacation, buy a new car, take you kids somewhere nice. Do it now while you can enjoy them.

The job will always be there when you get back, but you, your friends and relatives may not be.

Those four and five day weekends are the ticket!

There are two types of overtime, Federal or State funded and budget funded. Federal and state funded OT are things like TARA. State, and some Federal OT are things like the Road Blocks and DUI task force. These will stay as long as the funds keep coming in, as the city is not absorbing the cost of the OT. So, if you want to make good OT money, work these as often as possible.

Late jobs, long investigations, and court are City funded. It is a budget problem when it gets out of control. It is what it is, not right or wrong. OT is not a right or entitlement and any employer can curtail it for any reason. Does it cause probelms, you bet. City Hall is looking for any way to save a buck to keep wasting more money on things like Fois Gras enforcement. The order goes out and the Department heads, even the Superintendent must comply.

This is nothing new and has been going on as long as there has been OT. Take it while you can, if you want it or need it. Ride it out when it dries up. It will return.

I hope the feds take a good hard look at all the "merit packages" for these so called police officers. The city is trying to get it's clout babies and political hacks in before the new list.
How can anyone explain it taking over two months to get the new Sgt's list out. This is why everyone believes or knows that the city plays with the results any testing service could have those results back in three weeks to a month but phil and the boys have to make some adjustments its still who you know in the good old CPD

My girlfriend works in the State's Attorney's office at 26th, she said that SOS caper has it's own task force going down there and they have been working it for a long time with IAD. It's not a Fed investigation. No idea how many are actually going to get popped, but there are over 20 under investigation. No idea why only 3 have been stripped so far, or how many are to follow.

Retired in '97 as a Sgt. 3,000 hours on the books, It included selling back the full furlough, p days, and bfd days. Equalled 90k, uncle took 30k(1/3), and I cleared 60k which came out to a rate of $20 an hour. $20 an hour clear is still not bad. Always took a furlough just using 16 v days and then used the remaining 9 as time due days. About 1000 hours of the time was earned at D1, so I felt like it was just another form of Deferred Comp.

Once the city announces a new promotional exam, the list is as dead as Elotes Man's career! This bs of x amount coming off the old list is pure mierda!
The clout/merit list wouldn't come under fed purview because NOLAN and company at the FOP signed off on it! The city can come up with whatever criteria they want and promote from that. The only criteria I've seen so far is that you take the first test, are able to breathe, and have a bos or three make a call for you. If your bargaining agent previously agreed to let you promote 30% at your whim, then theres nothing to cry about!

Old news but still news:

There is NO coordination between patrol division and "special"
units designated as terrorist units when a situation might arise in Chicago.

News from London suggests that the entire police community be alerted when danger to the public safety is threatened.

This plan worked far beyond the dreams of the anti terrorist planners. In fact, they were so very lucky to have nipped the bud of an incredible attack that they
acutally thanked "God" and ignored Tony Blair.

They should kiss his precious ass.

In any event, Chicago is so arrogant that the mayor has decreed to be silent. The alderscum have declared themselves a raise, and the city's infrastructure is in a state of
ridicule by it's citizens as well as the surronding counties.

I think we shall pay for our ineptitude in the near future.
I hope that all of the PO's are careful and safe in the times to come.

God bless you all.

Demand a plan and demand that it is your right to be informed. Do you truly believe that the "appointed bosses " the " phone call bosses" the "I know someone bosses " are the best for this city?

No. Always remember, your family first. Never give up family for the sake of an "annointed pimp"

Think for yourselves, be careful.

I came across this post on the Chicago Dispatchers Blog Site.

Any thoughts, comments?

---------------------------

Officer Safety: Whose responsibility?

Age-old question. Officers are responsible to their partners & brethren in the field, dispatchers are responsible to officers, OEMC and CPD are responsible for ensuring open lines of communication, and CPD is responsible to its sworn employees in that [safety] equipment should be up to par.

But when there's a lapse, whose fault is it? We pose this question because within the last two days, there was a breakdown.

Gang unit asks for an assist at "Street X." Dispatcher asks "Street X and what?" to get a cross street/location to get help going to. Gang unit repeats "Street X." Dispatcher asks again, and other units in the field say that the unit may be at Location A. Dispatcher gets units going to Location A. Watch Commander comes over the air and annoyedly states "SQUAD, they're detailed to Location B." Dispatcher states that she was never made aware, and gets units going to Location B. After all is said and done (and thankfully no officers are injured), gang unit sarcastically "thanks" the dispatcher for "all your help," clearly indicating the opinion that the fault lies with the dispatcher.

We regularly have officers on our zones that we don't know exist. We rarely get gang/tactical lineups for many districts. Although many dispatchers may not keep track of where units are, or occasionally during a relief switch such information is lost, many officers seem to have the belief that they aren't required to tell us where they are, we're not their "bosses," we have no right to "check" on them and make sure they're where they say they are.

And when a unit on-views a disturbance and screams for help from a location unknown to the zone, they believe it's the dispatcher's fault, even in situations where their PCAD location is a mile from where they need help and they never informed the zone/citywide of the change.

We don't dispute that we're not out in the field, and therefore don't live the stress of literally fighting for our lives. But we can't get help to where police haven't told us they are. Officer safety in the field goes both ways.

re 8:47;47 pm, All the prima donna tact or gang teams don t go over the air to let the zone know thry are out there cuz then they might have to actually take a job. I was working day of incident, don t blame the dispatcher on that one, it was the tact/gang teams fault for not letting the zone know they were out there. Good thing nothing serious came out of that one.eEveryone should come home the way we left .Stay safe.

This is not the first time, nor will it be the last time some church or group addresses roll calls. Happened years ago on the West Side. We sat there, real quiet and polite. It really pissed them off. The enemy hates it when you are overly polite. They want the confrontation.

Me, they can send people to roll call everyday. I love to be entertained. It breaks up the boredom.
