Intelligent Debate

It appears that we've actually provoked some decent debate with our "Problems facing the Department" posts. We have another three that we're working on for next week and there are a couple more suggestions we might address after reading the comments.

Are we going to change anything? Of course not. Does it help to have some level of discussion about it? Maybe. Who knows where the next big idea might be stolen from? We hope it's from here.

Light weekend posting. Bears play Sunday night, so don't expect anything during game time. Be careful out there.

On the lighter side...
Chicago Business as usual

>The Chicago contractor didn't do any measuring or figuring, but leaned

>The official was incredulous and said, "You didn't even measure like
>the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?"
>
>"Easy," the Chicagoan explained: "$1,000 for you, $1,000 for me, and
>we hire the guy from Kentucky."

Until making a felony arrest is a requirment you can forget it. This job will continue to be what it is; welfare for white people. Sorry, I'm white, Irish, live in Mt. Greenwood, but that's what this job is. There is no accountability. There is nothing efficient about it. It's a McJob. No I'm not going to quit. McDonalds, and Walmart don't pay as well. Besides I have authority and I get to entertain myself. You can't ask for anything more.

SCC,

From the look at things at other blogs that you have inspired, you are kicking some butt. These other blogs definitely do not post enough on their sites. I see how tough and time consuming it is to come up with new posts. Keep up the good work.

The department should get the word out mor eoften that if you steal or really step on yourslef, it is off to jail and or off the job. Case in point- the cretin who tried to cash the bogus one mill check at the CPFCU. More publicity on this stuff. Too many people get awaw with this crap for too long and by the time it comes up, it is a huge black eye. Get them out when thefirst beef comes in, make them POWs until they quit or they get fired.

With the coppers from SOS getting locked up for stealing, this clown from 005 getting locked up for trying to steal one million dollars from OUR credit union and without a doubt more coppers to get locked up in the future, I think it is time we address the financials of this job.

One would think the Mayor would not want this bad publicity, especially in an election year marred with the stench of overt corruption as it is. But instead of addressing the problem, he will just dimiss it as a "few rouge officers."

While I in NO WAY condone taking money that you did not earn, I think this is something we need to address. Sure, on paper we make some good money. After taxes, pension, deferred comp, benefits, etc, it is not so much.

And lets not forget the highest sales taxes and gasoline taxes in the nation, entertainment taxes, city stickers, highly priced utility bills skyrocketing higher, paying for CPS AND private schooling for OUR kids, OUTRAGEOUS property taxes, etc.

If we banded together under a SOLID F.O.P. leadership and fought for dropping the residency requirement, these things would all but disappear. We need to study how other large cities (LA, NY, etc) got the city to drop their requirement.

Our salary goes a HELL OF A LOT FURTHER if we can live in a sububurb we can afford to live in. And more money in our pocket equals less cops doing dumb shit trying to survive in this expensive city.

Just a thought.

FWIW, I've really enjoyed the recent articles and the replies posted. It makes for some VERY good, very interesting reading.

You all feed my curiosity with certain things and I really appreciate that. I do have some questions that I will eventually ask, but for now, I'll just keep reading.

BTW, here's yet one more present for you guys - or in Philly speak, "youse guys". It'll probably be the last one for quite some time (unless you throw some hints of what you all like)...

Enjoy.

The most important part of this job is the ability to communicate. Quelling certain situations before they go haywire. You never see a 10+ year copper filling out a TRR or getting clocked in the puss for no reason (except the usual broad with something to prove). YES certain situations are a no-win situation, but most are not. The ability to "talk someone down" is a valuable tool that MUST be in the cirriculum of FTO's. It's not that BS verbal Judo. Its Talking, real talking to someone who need sto be talked too.

Okay 08:25 you pussy. I have over ten years on and I still do TRR's. I go out and make arrests
9/28/2006 10:25:22 PM

Are you getting batteres by your offender 3-4 times ayear too?? that was my point, the aftermath of the TRR and hitting the medical because your mouth got you in trouble and you needed someone else to bail you out. Sorry my pooint wasn't clearer.

9/29/2006 07:54:27 AM

My mouth does get me in trouble every time I utter the word YOU ARE UNDER ARREST. So I suppose I shouldn't use those words anymore.
This department is full of pussies. Too many guys/gals would rather turn their head and ignore M/F's because "we will have to put our hands on him and its not worth it." Well, well, well....SOMEONE has to put their hands on him and I wish more people would feel comfortable about it. You are the police its part of your job. Everyone knows that in certain situations it is better to leave for officer saftey considerations but when the numbers are equal its time to go back and be the police. They only run their mouths becasue they know they will get away with it. Once we start reminding people we are the police and we will arrest them they will stop acting the fool. 10 Years+ means nothing to me. That ten years experience of you driving the other way of a 10-1 b/c you might have to do a TRR says alot. I would rather work with the new cadets they got in the areas then you. At least I know they are not afraid of being the police. And no I don't get battered 3-4 times a year. No I don't go on the medical after a foot pursuit. People like you have ruined this job. And its sad that PPO's think that they should look to someone like you for advice. I can only hope you are hidden under a rock somewhere, and don't have the ability to corrupt the new guys/gals.

RE: Irish Welfare for White People:

you are the typical Irish Mt. Greenwood Pud Head that never realizes that any Dope can arrest someone. Remember, even Gomer Pyle did it on Andy Griffith Show- "Citizens Arrayst, Citizens Arrayst!!! You probably worked in 022 your whole short career, or in one of the 90 day Wonder Units.
Make hundreds of quality arrests that put real career criminals in prison for several years, then you can "talk the talk".
Until then, SHUT THE F---UP, drink your cheap beer in Mt. Gjerkwood, piss your pants, go home to mommy, slap your whistle dick, and pass out as usual, Pud Boy.

To 12:31 if you think this city will ever, ever let the residency requirement slip by, stop now. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN! Where does the city get those outrageous taxes from, that's right, you, me and every other city worker. We are forced to live here and are guaranteed revenue. Every contract I've worked through there s always mention to band together and lift the rule. In the mean time while we are wasting our time, the city is coming up with ways to take away our health care, penalize us more for c.r.'s etc. FOP members if you really want to make a difference, take this advise to heart. Take less of a raise in exchange for better, and more guaranteed in the future health care. Sure everyone likes more money in their pockets in the here and now. But people think to the future when you will be retiring and needing 1. more medication 2. better healthcare for you and your families.
You knew when you were hired you had to live in the city to be employed here, that won't change, so forget about changing it. WORK FOR BETTER BENEFITS!!!

You, sir, have proven you are an ass hat. FOP will not do anything to help us. It is time to form a new union that is not behoolden to the bosses or the National Democratic Party like FOP is. Rememebr FOP is a National Fraternal Orgainization. They are not a labor union or labor organization and never have been.

It is time for a real change and a real union. I am retiring soon. My first action will be to stop being a member of the FOP. In almost thirty years they have done nothing but ruin this job for all of us.

All you young so called real coppers out thereshould start looking for a real union to represent your interests, not a fraternal group. FOP is just like the Elks, the Moose, and the American Legion.

I don't think this job is welfare for white people, but I do agree there are a lot of people out there who have mastered the ability to scam the system to the point that it is almost welfare for them. Working is still an option on this job, and most cops I know choose to work.

dear 12: 31, You sir are a ass hat, I don't know if you ever were apart of another union but I had the chance to be apart of three unions in my lifetime before joining cpd. First off repalcing the fop with a union won't help our cause at all. You will only have a union reprsenting us that are not the police , therefore they can not relate to us. Secondly a union has the ability to strike which makes them strong force to recon with, we on the other hand can not strike so we have no leg to stand on!!!!! I don't get it I been around for three contracts. the first 2 were long and drawn out big retro checks everybody was happy with the checks but not happy with the amount of time it took to settle the contracts, so on the last contract the fop was not gonna allow this to happen at the first sign of inpass they go for arbitration, the contract gets settled a little faster but people still complain about our union....What gives????? since we don't have the ability to strike we have to learn to give up somethings to get somethings. its the way the cookie crumbles!!!!!!!! If you are so concerned about this union then work on getting 100% of cpd to vote on board members, not just 40%! this will be a start. then after 100% of our brothers and sisters vote on atleast two contracts and the fop is still no good then we can look into someone else representing us, until then keep voting and stop whinning!!! you sound like a little girl...

It's idiots like you that have deminished the definiton of being a CHICAGO COP. The heart of the job no longer exists, every man for himself is your motto it would seem. This job is not the same as it used to be. People like you don't look out for anyone but yourself. If you are using this job for the PAY only, that's really sad. There are others out there who actually like what they do and take pride in it. SIdes FElONY arrests take time and dedication. If you policed like you drink then maybe your opinion would change.
