Rumors Abound!

The buzz is official. Numerous persons have received phone calls informing them that a new Sergeant's class will be starting shortly, possibly as soon as next week with an announcement before Wednesday. No word on how big the class might be and whether or not they will be receiving the full 3 months worth of Detective familiarization. We imagine it would make some sense to the bean counters to hold off promoting them until after the New Year. Rumors can be posted here.

Expect a small class of Lieutenants immediately before or after part 2 of the new Lieutenants Exam. We imagine that class will depend on the number of retirements scheduled for the end of the year.

on another thread I saw that Patrica Hill is giving a study class for the Sergeants oral bds or what have you

I was under the impression that she was no longer employed by the CPD.... Not that would preclude her from offering a class.

Does anyone know for certain whether or not she is still on the CPD payroll?

Im keeping my fingers crossed on this one

The phone rang Monday with the announcement. I have to go to 35th St. and sign some papers accepting the assignment. I have been told the class starts next Monday. As far as class size, I don't know, but SCC will be the first to know.

So, unfortunately, you're two posts are bullshit rumors. Now, this is not to say that a class isn't going to be made this week. The chances are good that it will happen. I'm just saying that you two fools have no idea what you're talking about.

What a bunch of B.S. 3 months after the city gives the
Sgt's test and they still dont have the results out. So they have to sneek a another class in off the old list. Either the city doesnt like how the new list looks or someone with alot of clout is close on the old list. Yeah this city is legit. Come on fitzgerald take all these lying cheating pieces of shit to prison. Daley and fat phil the hired truck scandal is nothing compared to promotions in the police dept.

Evidently, it's been a couple of years since you got promoted "sarge." Personnel calls everyone next up to see if they are going to sign up for the new 12 week Detective Familiarization course prior to promotion. So your accusation of "bullshit" turns out to be BULLSHIT!

You sir are correct. I was from the last class. I did not receive a call because I was not suppose to go. Two guys from my district who were a few spots ahead of me however did receive the call from personnel to ensure they were going to detective training. In my case a detective was notified prior to the actual class starting and declined the position. I was next up on the list and was notified by FOP and my watch commander to report the following monday for sgt training.
Also at tonights FOP General meeting it was announced that the list had come out.
By the way 9:52:10 on the last test we took part two in march or april of 02 and the first class off that list wasnt until spring of 03 also this list has used less than 6% the top test takers.

WAY OFF TOPIC

Who want to be a sgt now a days? Too much shit coming down from the morons who think that ride a longs are neccessary. 4 dip shits fuck up and the rest of the dept has to suffer? I feel like I did when I got in trouble in grade school. What the fuck are the exempt thinking they're accomplishing? WE ARE NOT CHILDREN, DAMMIT!!! Yeah great they got caught, but now the rest of us have to pay??? The sgt's are proving they are afraid of their own shadows. The commanders , most if not all act like spineless maniquins. Those above commanders rule by their feelings, not regulations. Idiot rule changes make you feel like we're back in the play ground and they're the ones that brought the ball. There is too much political bull shit in this department. Who ever thought of dumbing down the promotion tests should get kicked square in the balls. So what if the rest of them are dumb fucks. Who would you rather have making important life effecting decisions? A smart "pass the test the first and scored well" qualified individual or and dumbed down test taker that couldn't figure out how to write a parking ticket if it was half way filled out by an old timer, but juiced up (or the right flavor). get rid of aclu , bring back d/c arrests, let the real police do their job. Over managment is real good way to fuck up things.
This city is headed straight down the shitter due to all of the liberal b.s. Thanks alot mayor, superintendant, aldermen, juice babies, aclu, reverends. Fight the law suits and save money. There shouldn't be a budget for paying out of court settlements.
TAKE THE INITIATIVE AND REVISE THE RULES AND REGS. STREAM LINE THE GENERAL ORDERS AND SPECIAL ORDERS. TOO MUCH SHIT AND TOO LITTLE SHOVELS. it all should be in under one guide book, not in three or four different catagories.

Yeah, Ain't it great. You score in the top 400, they make 400 plus sergeants and you can not get promoted. Why? Merit. Its not how well you do it is who you blow. For those of you visiting this blog who are not the Police let me take a moment to explain how merit in Chicago Works. Imagine you are in college taking a course. You bust your A$$ studying, you show up to all classes and take the final. You walk away with a B+ but realize they few you got wrong and have a good knowledge of the course. Now, next to you is a person who is friends with the professor. This person shows up for the bare minimum amount of time, gets a LOW D and does not take the Final. Because he is friends with the Professor (Merit) he gets a A+. This is how merit works on the CPD. When you call for a Supervisor you have a Good chance that that Supervisor is merit and has no idea what they are talking about. I will not go into those who are friends with the people who develop the test and are able to get a good score because they are fed the answers beforehand. If I sound a little bitter perhaps I am but at least I know what I have accomplished I did on my own. Money is not everything, self respect is.

. . . Who wants to be a sgt now a days? Too much shit coming down from the morons who think that ridealongs are necessary. . . .
------------------------------

Being a sergeant IS A GREAT JOB.. better than pushing a beat car or living with a D-1 pension. With the pay raise / quarterly checks / 45 MINUTES @ day that you can sell back up to 200 hours.. It’s about a $19,000 raise over D-1. That’s not including overtime (the hell with that)

Believe me, if you have over 20 years on this job and you're burned out being the police and just want to coast the rest of the way, it's great. The CRs that you handle at the district level are chickenshit. If you have clowns on your log who will be future inmates at a federal penitentiary facility all you have to do is MAKE SURE you see them twice a tour to log them. (preferably when they are not robbing / raping / beating people)

I was a P.O. 24 years before I made it. I worked my ass off for overtime, court etc. Overtime is for suckers. You only get one chance to see your kids grow up. When you get that paycheck on the 1st and 16th you should be getting the most money for the least amount of hours worked and least amount of bullshit.

Anyone that says "screw that sergeant's job" is just regurgitating sour grapes.

Excellent response!!!

I can't believe how many guys are working two and three sidejobs, plus court. They never see their families! Who cares if your house is a mansion in some supposedly crime free neighborhood if you are never there to enjoy it?

If you are young and single, hit 'em hard and hit 'em often with those yellow slips. But once you have a child or two, all the money in the world can't replace missing school plays, sports events and just hanging out with them. Get the basic cable instead of 1,000 channels of shit. Drive a sensible car and don't mortgage yourself into HAVING to work 80 hours a week. It's not worth it in the long run!

Stay safe, be smart and God bless!

I've heard that the City Council approved funding for a promotional list of 100 INSTEAD of the 50 we all now know about. I find that very interesting. I wonder if Phat-ass Phil said something like: "Thanx aldermen, but we'll make do with 50 promotions"....Must have been that an exempt's nephew, niece, cousin, friend, etc was #35, no need to promote anymore than that.

Since it has already been touched on, let me just say that 'merit' makes me puke. BTW, just so you all realize it: 'merit' is 30%, thats about ONE THIRD of all promotions,(thanks FOP), 20% for everything else......where's the damned barf bag....

More Likely the old list had less Kids of Supervisors than the new list. Heaven Forbid we promote people with time on the job and experience. It is so obvious but nobody cares. I do not understand why ANY Police Officer would do more than the bare minimum. If you are not connected you will not go far in this job.

Meritorious detective nominations are being accepted now, due by end of September. Usually 20-30 days following final due date for nominations the class/promotion list comes out. Guessing a new class of detectives at end of October, beginning of November.

Hey 7:47, I had an identical situation. Always worked a 2nd job and made Sgt. after 19yrs. 3 kids, I was never home. That's probably why the youngest and I aren't that close. I looked down the road to the pension and knew I would end with more retiring at the higher rate. I always tried to help the workers, no matter their job, and let the dogs fend for themselves. It's terrible but true that when test taking you are just up against a few other Officers. It was called "standardizing" and a few other names that I can't recall. The brutha's, sista's, and the clout babies were a given. Notify the WC, 1987.....

And you are obviously a newer person on the job. I was not whining, just stating fact about how CPD is run. Contact me in a couple of years after you take and do well on promotional exams but see people you know who scored THOUSANDS worse then you but get promoted.

"Hatlives", you've got a bad attitude. I'm not saying I blame you totally for it; as anyone with any time on this job will tell you, after a while, disappointment will become your silent best friend. Thought you were going to a specialized unit? Your clout calls and tells you his move on your behalf got "outclouted." Thought you had a chance to move up meritoriously? Nope. Found out your package got "outclouted" at the Merit Selection Board. It happens. But I've also seen a few
(I repeat, A FEW) damn good police officers who may never score in the top 400 on any present or future Sgt. exam become Sgt. These few officers were exemplary in the field, respected by their peers and the supervisors they worked with on a regular basis. And guess what? They're doing well as "merit" Sgts. Now, here's the kicker....all three that I know who were promoted meritoriously are WHITE. So don't walk around thinking that "merit" promotion automatically means black or brown only need apply. Quiet as it's kept, most meritorious promotions on the CPD since its inception have been white males.
