At latest report, this thing is pushing near to 20 hours. Sun Times, Tribune, Channel 2, Channel 5 and Channel 7 cover it.

Anyone who was on or near the scene have any insight?

Never near the scene but ever SWAT or tactical unit in the country has got to be laughing at Chicago right now.

I remind you, I was not there, but from what I have learned there is a large area blocked off from public and the is no info that this guy is holding a large amount of weapons.

Are they wating for him to fall asleep? Someone really need to look at the tactics employed by SWAT. I understand hands might be tied in regards to decisions but come on here.

During every situiation you have to take into count numerous factors but the factors in this case do not warrant a stand off that is holding numerous blocks of a community hostige.

The original call came out as a disturbance man with a gun. 3rd district cars began to arrive and shots were fired at the police. At around 0148 hrs. a 10-1 call came out stating "10-1 at 6940 S. Jeffery, shots fired, person down 3rd dist is requesting all available units" During the first few hours of the standoff a shot would ring out periodically.

Let us try to imagine how Mary Mitchell's next column will read.

Option #1: White racist police allowed this poor black man to kill himself and his hostage. Police were overheard saying "we would handle this alot different if we were in South Barrington."

Option#2: This poor black man was depressed over the situtation surrounding the black boy mistakenly arrested in Hyde Park last month. His depression got the best of him. The community is outraged over the police for causing this situation.

Option#3: Rumors circulated at scene saying there was a suspicious substance placed in the poor black man's turkey. Sources close to the situation say there have been numerous other instances were the white owners of Moo & Oink have placed chemicals in the food of there black customers. The Sun Times is checking to see if the Moo & Oink in Lake Forest has the same problem.

Option#4: This is another situation were an unstable black man has gone over the edge. No ones fault other than his. No responsibility other than his. No actions by the Police causing him to act this way. Just another pooch who is no longer a burden to society.

I say option #4 is the best. What do you think Mary will say?

It's over!!! Two dead without a shot fired...by police. No worries, you know the outraged public will find a way to blame the police for cornering this individual and forcing him to kill his hostage and himself as well. Tragic.

why is it taking so long to take action? it reminds me of det. airhart and how this city failed to get in because of taking too long...

Fantastic ending for our ELITE SWAT team, two people dead including the offender and the depertment throws out a statement that they never fired a shot. Like that is an accomplishment.

The only reason the SWAT team entered the apartment is becasue they heard a shot, otherwise they would still be sitting there right now.

The best part is now the one victim who died because of this most likely has a family and will sue the city for their inactions. Although I do not agree with the lawsuit happy society, I would love to see these people sue because the department is really at fault for this one.

I mean 23 hours of doing nothing but talking to and feeding this guy and this is the outcome.

A FUCKING JOKE

Both Dead, and I love the Quote from Starks, "no shots were fired by Chicago Police". I bet the family files a law suit anyway for lack of police action.

Dana Starks in charge? We're in trouble now. Phil must have been out of town.

Take a look at his response to the question about whether or not the police fired a shot when they entered the building. He looked totally out of his element. Where's Pat Camden when you need him?

God bless the hostage's family....

This Hostage taker shot at the Police and took (believed to be) TWO hostages ! At what point does this offender become a aforce threat? Isn't Hostage rescue a part of the Elite SWAT team of CPD? How about shooting the F$%#ing hostage taker to save the life of the hostage! Her blood in on the hands of all the bosses on scene. Starks and Cline should change out their uniforms for Pink Dresses, F#$%ing cowards ! Put Down the Bull-Horn and use a Bullet, save a life and save lots of OT money!

I think the family should sue the shit out of the Department.

Whats the point of having a highly trained "SWAT" team if all they do is sit on their collective asses waiting for the offender/hostage taker to give up and come out with his hands in the air???

There comes a time when you have to take the offensive. In situations such as this, I would venture to say that after nearly 24 HOURS, that time came and went.

If that was your family member sitting in there, you'd damn well want a sniper to take his ass out ASAP.

Sadly, the Department's inaction cost that woman her life. If they would have at least tried to do something other than wait, she would have had a 50/50 chance at survival. Instead, their doing nothing guaranteed her death.

Good job SWAT! You should be proud of your fine work. Now go spend that overtime check and eat your leftover turkey.

the cpd policy of negotiating to the point of failure is one of cowardice.
i'm sure that the dissarmed citizens of chicago take compfort in the fact that if they get taken hostage the cpd will contain the situation until they are either released or killed by their captor.
the beat cars contain the scene for the swat team who then contains the scene with fancier weapons.
are we as the police truely in a position where the only lawsuit safe action is no action at all?

Wow the monday morning quarterbacks are out already and this just ended, they ALWAYS try to talk them down, if there is any kind of dialogue at all, if they rush in the end result would have been the same and the police would have been the bad guy and were "rushing in" instead trying to wear him down and talk him out, you are damned if you do damned if you don't..........

Granted I don't know a lot about HBT incidents, but I bet this would have been handled differently if the powers that be hadn't forced out Bosse and Baranowski.

Put the two quotes from Starks together, and see where this one goes.

Before: Time is on our sides in these situations.
After: Well, tragically a hostage was killed, but we didn't fire a shot.

Grrrrreeeaaaatttt boss!

Reason #646764 that you do NOT release information to the media except as a PREPARED statement AFTER an incident is concluded. Yeah, the job is legit.

You "armchair critics" need to get a life. The offender was a mental case, and a convicted (firearm)felon. He had barricaded both doors of the apt. Would you have been willing to risk an "entry" and hope the Police were able to get past the crap he had in front of the doors to save YOUR family member? As long as they were talking to the guy, there was a chance they could reason with him to at least let the woman out. Don't go blasting Starks, or any exempt, for this one. Everybody who was there did the best they could, to the point of exhaustion. If you weren't there, shut up. If you've had no experience in these kinds of things, shut up. You just might learn something. If SWAT had rushed in and the woman was killed, they would have been hung by public opinion. The police are screwed in these kinds of situations whenever an innnocent is killed. No wonder they call this a thankless job. Everybody there showed great patience in dealing with an armed lunatic. Family members the guy trusted were allowed to talk to him; nothing worked. Many people who were on the scene believed the guy wanted to die, but wanted Police to kill him. When that didn't work, he decided to do himself. One can only guess as to why he wanted to take her out with him.

Having spent quite some time on H.B.T. in the past, have been out of it for 12 years now. Consider this, Hostage and Bad guy are expendable. You do the best you can to resolve the incident without blood but bottom line, the police don't shed the blood. No reason to respond to this and critisize my statement because I don't care what you say. I believe Bosse and the Baron would have handled it the same way as long as there was some hope of getting the hostage out in one piece. However, I wasn't there and for you guy's that weren't there, bite your tongue!

Its not SWATS fault; it’s that one person with no military experience; that only got the job because of clout... I bet you most of the SWAT guys would have loved to put a bullet into his head. I know I would... awwwwww…brings back memories of my war time experience... GOD I miss it... hopefully we can go to WAR with IRAN next. I’ll be there for that one too...

You guys who criticize this incident are a bunch of assholes. It was a no win situation unless they felon surrendered.

SWAT enters=victim most likely will die.

SWAT shows patience and tries to talk felon out=victim died.

Either way the media and the family members will blame the police for this animal killing a human being.

Instead of bashing your fellow coppers about their actions, why not be thankful that no fellow policemen were injured.

Did you ever think that the SWAT members were itching to take action but were subdued by the higher powers that run this department?

By the way, yes I was involved in this incident and NO,I am not a member of SWAT.

Fellow officers,

I must admit I have on several occasions posted some ill thoughts on this board in the past. As I was sitting here having a few beers after a long dragged out shift and thinking about all the shit that goes back and fourth, and the recent events that has divided the city race relations, as well as the officers in various units, I can see we are growing farther apart.

As I see it, for the most part, we all hate our union, we all hate the mayor, many of us hate living in the city, Were tired of being passed up by meritorious selection, we cant stand inspectors bullshit, lack of manpower, shitty equipment, we embarrassed by the bad cops among us, we hate the way the public perceives the police, Our public schools for our children suck, ETC...

What this blog has done is pit us against each other. Media types, citizen and other officers from other departments have logged on and can see, Damm! This department is fucked up. Lets stop the hate among each other. We slam each other for the units were in, we slam each other for who we know or how we got a position, but we need to remember why we came on in the first place. Im tired of hearing about how we feel SWAT messed up the latest HBT situation. Im sure If the majority of the SWAT\HBT members had it there way, things might have come out police 2, bad guys 0, but then there is the mopes in our society complaining the police took extreme force. As it is, there complaining we didn’t do enough. Im not in one of those special units. Just a beat cop with 18 years on. Two to go and im out of here. I would like to leave proud.

Then there is the shooting of a gang banger who tried to disarm another police officer and got shot before one of out own was quick enough to end that threat. So people are going to protest and blame us. Lets not second guess each other and take sides.

The real issue is sticking together. Were not going to change the things we hate by spreading more hate. Were all in units, districts and other positions because we need a job. A pay check. We need to provide for ourselfs and family. Lets use this post to inform the readers how understaffed and mismanaged we are/ Guide our obvious frustration to the system that should be working for ALL OF US.

I know if I were in charge, Things would be different. Im sure you have thought or said the same thing. Our bosses are wimps, afraid of their own shadow and the media.
Im so glad to hear when officers win a battle against the evil in our society and you should be too. So lets stop and think before we post. Shift our anger at the real problem. Not each other.

Ok, enough said, im going to have a few more pops, play a game and hit the sack. Gotta go play this silly game tommrow. Be safe and GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

That is an example of too much brass and no one willing to make a decision. It all ended bad. Did anyone think of doing 2 basic things that me as a P.O. would have solved this in an hour and those kids would still have their mom:
1. Call out the P.O.'s and Sergeants that are trained to deal with mentals, no brass has been trained but CPD spent thousands on this training
2. Offer him his medication so he can calm down and think rationally
3. Call his doctor, medical or therapist, it does not matter, or even the pharmascists where he gets his medication.

Brains and brass do not go together
