Gerald Ford, RIP

News outlets are reporting the former president has died this evening at the age of 93. We're old enough to have vague memories of Watergate and Ford's taking over following the Nixon resignation. Ford losing to Carter is one of our earlier political memories and it was a topic of discussion over our dinner table for weeks. Our parents didn't like Carter much and the following four years proved their observations correct.

The "accidental President" served with quiet dignity. He will be missed.

A truly good man, history was much kinder to him than the press was during his tenure.

Anybody still have their WIN buttons?

First James Brown, now Gerald Ford.
Who next, Jesse Jackson or Dorothy Tillman?
God I hope.

Just think... Gerald Ford and James Brown waiting in line together to get in the pearly gates.

That would be an interesting conversation!

RIP President Ford, you served your country with honor.

Guess there are worse ways to be remembered.

As a former Democrat now independant,I can honestly say he is one Republican I would have voted for. The GOP needs more people like him. RIP Mr.President. You served your country well and with honor.

The last President to have served in WW2.

Nope. As a World War II history buff, I have to disagree and inform you he never received a Silver Star. He joined the the Naval Reserves after Pearl Harbor, but never got called to combat. He served though, which speaks volumes about his dedication to America. I believe you are thinking about JFK?

I remember the liberal politicians, leftists pundits, and way out Hollywood types constant taking jabs at his intelligence. Read Gerald Ford's biography. He had balls, class, and rose from more modest means than any of us. Oh, and where are these fruit, bustout, leftwingers now?

Ford...a Republican "lackey" for Nixon, a dimbulb the party could count on to let the boss slip through the noose after he AND
AGNEW had to resign in disgrace...
'nuff said. But Ford maintained dignity in what was essentially a seatwarming post (rather like that of Sawyer for Daley here in Chicago some years back), and couldn't quite convince the American voting public that he was "different" from the other criminal Repubs that had previously occupied the office, and was worthy of their support.
One of the few Repub Presidents in recent memory that had no public/political scandal about him (other than the fact that he let that rat Nixon off the hook with a pardon), led a dignified personal life, solid athlete as well. Being buried without any personal scandal as a politician is a great feat in itself today. I personally hope they bury him in Michigan, on the grounds of his Presidential Museum. It would be a fitting remembrance to a man who was thrust from anonymity to become the leader of our nation in just a few short months.

An All American Football player in college, and recipient of a silver star. A truly good man. Rest in Peace Gerald R. Ford. History will judge you much better than your contenporaries did.
In response to TRU Stud. Chevy Chase didn't make Gerald Ford. His falls and attempts to portray Ford as a klutz were not complimentary. In his day Ford would have danced rings around Chevy Chase on the gridiron or any other field of athletic competition.

Now let the BS begin. I heard this on the radio this morning.

Washington Post reporter/author Bob Woodward now claims Gerald Ford was dead set against the War in Iraq, thought President Bush was a goof, hated Dick Cheney, hated Rumsfeld, thought Al Gore would have handled 9-11 better. Can you believe this left wing asshole has the nerve to make these claims? Another Dumbercrat with another left wing bullshit story. He claims President Ford told him all of this in confidence and didn't want any of it reported unitl his death. Yeah Right!!! Rot in hell, you and Berstein (or however you spell his name).

God Bless Gerald Ford - I know in my heart of hearts he would have never said this, especially to an asshole like Woodward.

I won't argue, other than to say that The Sun Times listed him as being awarded The Silver Star.

FYI, If you weren't a career Sailor or Soldier during WW2 (as in draftee or from College ROTC ranks) you were a reservist. You could tell a regular Army guy from a draftee or Reservist by their Serial Numbers. Regular Army had a Serial Number starting with RA. Draftees and Reservists began with US.

to "the view"

you really need to read up on the reasons he gave for doing it.Nixon's Pardon. I thought at the time it was quid pro quo for becoming president but learned better later on in life.also for the anon Bush the 1st was the last WWII president. He was one of the few who actully put the country before himself or his party many on this board could learn from that.
