Daley Sued Over Burge

Give a lawyer enough money and they'll file all sorts of lawsuits:
  • Mayor Richard M. Daley was added Wednesday as a defendant in a civil suit alleging that city officials have conspired for 25 years to cover up the torture of suspects by Chicago police.
  • Former Mayor Jane M. Byrne and Cook County State's Attorney Richard Devine were also added to the lawsuit filed on behalf of Darrell Cannon, who claims he was tortured into confessing to a murder he didn't commit.
Daley was the State's Attorney back when these allegations took place and it's been suggested that he rode Burge's clearance rate to the 5th Floor of City Hall. If so, how is he riding on today's clearance rate? We suppose citizens get the politicians they deserve, too.

one has to wonder about the motivation for this....maybe by adding Daley as a defendant (and I'm no fan of Daley), Taylor (who hates the police and law enforcement) is trying to extend the lawsuit and its statute of limitations, add defendants in order prolong depositions, etc.). Taylor's lifelong passion seems to be to "remedy the Burge tortures" (my words); it seems time that the court system finally tells him to go away, for good....

Salt Lake City radio station KNRS-AM has confirmed that Sulejman Takovic, the Trolley Square shooter, was in fact, a Bosnian Muslim.

Slightly off topic, but Daley will be hosting the Olympic Committee in early March. This would be a great time to have a mass demonstration of city employees and embarass the hell out of him like we should have during the Democratic convention.

The Olympic Committee is also not without past scandals. There have been stories about how they have been bribed with cash, cars, jobs for relatives. They will fit right in here in Chicago.

Clout makes cut to be judge

February 15, 2007
BY ABDON M. PALLASCH AND ERIC HERMAN Staff Reporters
Sixty-four highly rated lawyers did not make the cut for candidates for associate judge of Cook County Circuit Court, which pays $147,000 a year.

But 18 attorneys found unqualified by one or more bar groups squeaked in. They include:

• Sheldon Harris, friend of state Supreme Court Justice Charles Freeman. Harris lost a judicial election in 2002 and lost the last associate judge competition in 2005. Freeman has reappointed Harris to temporary vacancies on the bench since 2000. The Chicago Council of Lawyers calls Harris "arrogant and rude" on the bench.
• Leonard Murray, whose law license was suspended for three months for neglecting seven clients' cases, two after Murray's sister was murdered. The state lawyer discipline board said the death mitigated his neglect.

• Michael J. Finley, who filed for bankruptcy 10 years ago. The council found him "not qualified" to be a judge.

• Sheila Wilson-Freelon, a member of Chief Judge Timothy Evans' church. The council found her "not qualified," saying she lacks sufficient litigation and courtroom experience.

At least nine who made the cut are spouses, siblings or children of judges.

"There's nobody on this list that doesn't know somebody," said Associate Judge Jim Linn, whose girlfriend Maritza Martinez is a finalist, found qualified by eight of 11 bar groups.

G. Flint could not get a guy out of a parking ticket beef, but this is his niche.

A Commie with friends in the Media will never go broke ( i.e. Billy the bomber Ayers adnd his Old Lady - Dorn of Northwestern - The Tribune playedup to them like they were Ozzie and Harriet and not accomplices to a cop-killer) - this turnip G. Flint and his pals, intend to undermine any and all confidence in the Justice system, and get paid a plenty in the bargain. This nonsense has developed into a cottage industry. Jon Loevy just swatted another $5M.

If Burge were guilty of everything or anything that he has been charged with he would be sitting already. This whole Flint Taylor nonsense is not about closure it is about $$$$ and prolonging the attention of the nitwits in the media.

God how we miss Jane Byrne, she was the best for us. Richie butted into the election between her and Harold Washington to split the white vote.

Somehow I think that Daley's people have put up Doc Walls to do the same to Dorthy Brown's vote. If this is true is it illegal?

Even Harold Washington wasn't bad, after you got by the "it's our turn" rhetoric. He know he couldn't mess with the white vote and the police too much and left our benefits alone.

Daley as State's Attorney was a big joke. He never tried a criminal case and couldn't get elected dogcatcher if it were not for the name.

He will either give millions of our money to this dog of a lawsuit go away quietly, or will do his Sergeant Shultz immitation.

Daley rode into city hall with high conviction rates and a law and order reputation during the Class X felony lockem up Reagan years conservative 80s.
He liked and defended Burge.

If Burge did torture people like they say he should pay for it.

But Daley should stop being a hypocrite. Also some of these guys are real criminals who deserved what they got.

This is all costing the City too much.

Daley knew about all of this and did ride into the Mayors office on his law and order high convictions. He knew his State's Attorneys were pressuring cops, taking coerced confessions and wanting lies.

Is Byrne still alive?

SCC,

I think it would be a good idea to open a post after the mayoral election and have people disclose anonymously who they voted for.

I thinks it's funny how a lot of people always bitch and moan about Daley yet still vote for him.

They always use the "lesser of evils" cop-out.

The other two candidates are pretty hopeless, however, this city is going to hell in a handbasket regardless of who's mayor. Pick one of the other two losers and see what happens.

To not want the olympics in our city just shows how damn ignorant, stubborn, and close minded you truly are! I know Daley has abandoned us at times and that sucks. I know that the olympics is his baby and would be legacy so it makes it easy for us to want to sabbotage that. But come on! The olympics would do so much for this city... The private money (thats right...most of the beautification and architecture is being funded privately by Pat Ryan and his donors) that will flood in and improve this city would be in the BILLIONS!! NOTHING but positive will come with 2016 bid... International respect for one... ask Barcelona what happend after they had olympics! Tourism increased nearly 100 fold! Sorry for 2 weeks "traffic would be terrible" and you would have to stand on a corner directing traffic (all at time and a half mind you) but the betterness of the city supercedees your need to sleep in and copmplain about everytrhing under the son! There is no need to complain about EVERYTHING!!! JUST STOP

Jane Byrne (nee: Burke), God Bless her, lives in the the Gold Coast area.

One of the reason she was so good for us is that she is the widow of a Marine pilot who died in the line of duty. So she knew the life of a family of a man in uniform. In an interview she said that her greatest regret of her time as Mayor was the firefighter's strike.

Richie knew if he split the white vote he could wait for Harold Washing to die, or run against him at a later date.

I wouldn't be suprised if it could be found out that his crew was secretly putting up "Doc" whats-his-name to split the black vote.

I'll vote for "Doc", rather than racist Eugene Pincham's Dorthy Brown. It will be an important protest to have as many votes for Dorthy and "Doc" come from the white neighborhoods.

Here are some points pertaining to the CPD in Dorthy Brown's speech to end Chicago corruption.

When she says police torture-which does not happen. The current myth continues. Does she mean stop arresting people? Suspend patrols? Don't bother, when people call 911. Does torture = routine police work.

Isn't OPS independant already? I've known a officer involved in its process. It is pretty stressful (he did nothing wrong but stop a dude from fighting him for no reason on a street).

Are tons of officers going to be sued and fired because Dorthy Brown takes office.

Stop policing for a week, noting, and show how great Englewood really is.

End Corruption Now:

Good Government is Good Ethics / Good Ethics is Good Government

Good Morning. We have come to City Hall to issue the first of several position papers on issues and conditions vital to the political health of our city.

Stop police abuse and torture; and
Make the City's bureaucracy a model of ethical behavior.

Institute objective measures and score job applications electronically based on qualifications, and make hiring decisions based on the measurements;

Create an independent Office of Professional Standards that is separate from the Chicago Police Department and the Mayor; and
Institutionalize the principles and practices of ethical management in every City department and agency.

Prevent further abuse and torture by the Chicago Police Department by creating a truly independent Office of Professional Standards, that is independent from the Police Department and the Mayor; and
Enhance ethics in City departments by creating a Code of Conduct for each department.

Thank you,

D. Brown

PS no one has a clue about police work.

I wonder why....many fine, competent, and honest people either choose not to seek political office, or run but do not win; and why many lawyers, who are smart, competent, and recognized by their peers as being among the best in their field, are not selected for judgeships in Cook County?.....The corruption of politics, including the politics of race, ethnicity, gender, friendship, family, and political party, continues unabated and infects every level of government in city, county, and state government; honesty, competence, and integrity are non-existent. The Olympics would raise our property values in the city.

Rephrase that, the Olympics will raise the cost of our housing, commercial rents, food, energy, taxes and the overall cost of living here.

It will not raise the standard of living of city employees but will make the select private contractor/campaign contributers rich.

In case some of you don't remember this lawsuit stems from MURDERS cleared by Area 2 Detectives. Some of the victims of these cases were our fellow POLICE OFFICERS, if any of you have a problem with getting the job done and the bad guy charged maybe you should be looking for a new profession. As we have seen this week even a decent reward has not brought any viable tips in regarding the homicide of Officer Vasquez. This just goes to show that the only people who care, besides your family, and would do anything in their power to get the bad guys would be your police family. And sometimes you do what you gotta do to get the job done.

Dorthy Brown is looking at a one time action to make up for past inequaties and to bring more sensitivity to the interactions with the minority community. She knows she has the backing of the Firemen and the Police will do what she says or else. She will, for a period of time, fill all vacancies and promotions when they become available, with minority people until there is a majority of minority supervisors at all levels. This will insure greater accountability.!
