Fun Times in the Big Easy

New Orleans never impressed us an anything but an overly hyped humid city that was miles and miles of crap surrounding a square mile or two of anything worth visiting. And after Hurricane Katrina, when every other state and municipality was able to recover within a year with the biggest Federal bailout in history, dysfunctional New Orleans continued to wallow in self pity and self destruction.

It continues:
  • With tourists streaming into town for Mardi Gras celebrations, a spasm of gun violence left two people dead and seven wounded -- more bad news for a city struggling to rebuild itself and its tourism industry.

Officials noted the bloodshed did not occur near any of the parades Thursday night to celebrate Carnival, which culminates Tuesday in Mardi Gras.
Funny how the crime rate in communities that accepted New Orleans refuges continues to skyrocket and New Orleans itself is averaging violent crime on a scale far in excess of cities three, four and five times it's size.

I have a younger brother who is a Hurricane Katrina survivor and he's very lucky he's alive today.

He tried moving back to NOLA, but he told me the city is so crime ridden, he just couldn't stay. He's since moved to Mississippi.

When the levee broke, it should have done more than just flooded - it should have swallowed the City whole so it could never recover again, and taken ever criminal with it. It's a cesspool.

You are absolutely right about New Orleans. Even before Katrina, and at its best, it was basically a garbage city with the only good section being the French Quarter, and if you strayed from there, you were taking your life in your hands in a dangerous place. Of course, New Orleans' problems are caused by FEMA, George Bush, etc, and not Mayor Ray Nagin, Governor Kathleen Blanco and the "good" citizens of the "Big Easy". It is everybody elses fault but theirs.

Occasionally there are legislated requirements for additional employer contributions. For
example, Public Act 90-766 required the City of Chicago to make additional contributions to the
Fire and Police Funds for FY1999-FY2013 in order to reduce their unfunded liabilities.

However, Public Act 93-0654 rescinded that requirement for FY2004-FY2013.

All one need to look at is the population percentages to see what the problem in New Orleans is. If Detroit were to have a similar disaster it would suffer the same consequences. The City of Chicago, our truly beloved town, would be handed the same fate. I speak from experience. I was on the west side for seven day after the killing of King. I walk with a little "hitch in my gitty up" from the brick thrown by a misunderstood citizen on the seventh night. By the way, I for one will never categorize it as an assassination. He wasn't all that important to the nation as a whole to be placed in the same arena of importance as Kennedy. A truly media made creature. I too had a dream. A dream that people would act in rational ways after what they deemed a tragedy. I had the misplaced dream that people would think to themselves, " is it really a good idea to burn down my home, the grocery store I buy food for my children, the school where I hope they will learn the lessons of life." I was proven wrong in 1968 and the cycle continues. It will continue until we as a nation realize what and who is the problem and take the hard choice steps to correct it once and for all. Stop the entitlement mentality and insist on acquiescence into normal society.

PS: to Malcolms Little Brother/Coldtype/Leftisbest/ etc. etc. etc. – this is America and I have the right to voice my opinion. If the leaders of this nation had any balls they would have a nationwide referendum on this issue and guess what, your side would loose. But then again, the problem wouldn’t be solved at all. Your side would just riot, as usual.

For your information: In New Orleans they have a very lackluster building code. Its no wonder the houses fell down. You can build your own shack, with no inspectors coming out to check.

Rebuilding NOLA below the water level of the levees is just setting up for the next huricane disaster.

Maybe they should take a page out of the Chicago, pre-Daleys, turn of the century civil engineering handbook. The whole downtown was raised up to prevent flooding during storms. This was done by thousands of men with screwjacks.

Can you imagine what the fate of this city would be if a similar disaster fell and Richie is at the helm. God help us and the Big Easy.

Had a friend of mine who was an NO copper for 30+ years, retired right before the hurricane. He always told me that on an average day, they would pick up 2-3 guns a week in his district. Come Mardi Gras, his district would get 3-4 guns a day, and all from people who were from outside of NOL.

His take was that outside people came to NO to 'party' and that outsiders have this idea that come Mardi Gras, anything goes.

From what he's told me, gangbangers from CA and TX have moved in to 'assist' their 'brothers', and it's them who are causing most of the trouble. Citizens of NO have lost too much and are just trying to rebuild and get on with their lives.

He does admit that even before the hurricane NO had a hell of a crime rate for a small city.

Jeez. The City has FINALLY decided to pump some money into our Academy
(an eyesore for at least the last 12/15 years, old carpet, yellowed ceiling tiles, dingy, run down gym area), and some new kid wants to bitch over a little dust? Be glad that they're modernizing the place!! We have Police coming from all over the WORLD to see what we're doing to combat crime, and all we had to showcase was our 911 center and headquarters, and a few of the "new" stations!! The Academy is supposed to be a state of the art facility, and it was, frankly, a huge embarrassment! I'm glad to see the new workout center! I use it all the time! I'm glad they're remodelling the cafeteria, and I can't wait to see what they're going to do for the gym area! All I can say is, it's about time!! If you have trouble breathing, wear a f**king mask in class if you have to!! We're one of the best PD's in the world now, and we should look like it!!

SCC if you don't really know anything about an issue it's ok NOT to comment on it. Really.

The biggest federal bailout in history? By this you are no doubt referring to the Great Team Bush Giveaway to connected firms that have done nothing in New Orleans but turn a hefty profit on the taxpayer's dime.

I think a few questions are in order while we wait for Old Grey Guy to awaken from his antibellum stupor.

Tell me SCC, with whom does the responsibility lie for the upkeep and maintenance of the levee systems of New Orleans? Answer: the federal government.

How do you explain away the Bush administration's unconscionable decision to reduce funding for the levees of New Orleans during the years leading up to Katrina--despite dire warnings from experts that one of the two greatest natural threats to the US (the other being a major earthquake on the west coast) was a major hurricane on the low-lying Gulf coast? Answer: you cannot.

Was it the decision of the New Orleans poor to ram legislation through which allowed for unchecked development on the former wet-lands separating the city from the Gulf and which acted as a buffer zone weakening the force of approaching hurricanes? Answer: of course not.

Are you not humiliated and ashamed that the entire world watched the spectacle of American citizens in an American city stranded atop their roof tops for 5 days while the President of the United States--the most powerful nation in recorded human history--played golf when not fumbling and bumbling a belated response? Answer: of course not since Brownie did a "heck of a job".

One last question SCC. Why did Team Bush gut FEMA and turn this once proud, competent agency into a warehouse for hacks and unqualified political appointees--like Brownie? I'll leave you to answer.

Stay safe.

New Orleans a crime ridden city? How can that be? It stayed CHOCOLATE in the last election. Had to stay chocolate you know, Yup, them chocolate people did a mighty fine job. Hopefully it will go 100% chocolate before the next big hurricane wipes it out.

Read the New York Times article about "brain drain" out of New Orleans. The big moving companies keep tabs on moving truck movements. It is professional people (non-chocolate) who vowed to stay and rebuild who are getting fed up and bolting for civilisation.

Hey, isn't Mogadishu a chocolate city too? They both sound like hell on earth. Like certain chocolate areas here, er, make that all chocolate areas.

I grew up in in a nice working class neighborhood before it turned chocolate and became a crime infested hell hole. Can anyone name one area in Chicago (or anywhere on earth) that got BETTER once it turned chocolate?

Just wondering. I couldn't think of one either.

Whereas you just open your mouth and demonstrate you know nothing at all about a subject.

The biggest federal bailout in history? By this you are no doubt referring to the Great Team Bush Giveaway to connected firms that have done nothing in New Orleans but turn a hefty profit on the taxpayer's dime.

Show us a government program that doesn't waste money. The Katrina bailout is estimated to cost upwards of $200 billion, much concentrated in New Orleans. The money is doled out in a series of "block grants" administrated at the local level - Nagin and Governor Blanco - both democrats. New Orleans corruption certainly can't be laid at the republican party's doorstep.

Tell me SCC, with whom does the responsibility lie for the upkeep and maintenance of the levee systems of New Orleans? Answer: the federal government.

BUZZ - wrong again. Or maybe you missed the part where the actual inspecting board is called the Levee Board of Louisiana, again in the form of Federal block grants. And those block grants were slashed - get this! - by THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION! Bush maintained the spending levels of the Clinton years and properly so. There is no reason on earth that Illinois or Oregon should be required to pay for New Orleans levee upkeep. Bush had nothing at all to do with it.

Was it the decision of the New Orleans poor to ram legislation through which allowed for unchecked development on the former wet-lands separating the city from the Gulf and which acted as a buffer zone weakening the force of approaching hurricanes? Answer: of course not.

Correct - it was the decision of the LOCAL government - the local elected DEMOCRATIC government. Did you know that Louisiana hasn't really been hospitable to republicans since the reconstruction? The Civil War reconstruction that is. Dems ran New Orleans into the ground, not Bush.

Helicopters were evacuating people on a massive scale within hours of Katrina's landfall. Boats, too. The response was amazing. Why, we even remember a certain Democratic Representative getting a hold of an boat to go to his house to recover some $90,000 in cash from the freezer in the midst of the evacuation. But the reason so many people needed to be rescued was they disregarded the evacuation orders. What'd you want Bush to do? Check out another helicopter? The air was crowded with them - it's lucky there were no midair collisions. Evacuation is a LOCAL issue. Or don't you remember all those buses sitting drowned in the parking lots because Nagin didn't supply bus drivers?

FEMA exists to airlift huge amounts of supplies into a disaster area and they did that job flawlessly. LOCAL authorities are responsible for evacuation and distribution. How many trucks does FEMA own? Zero. How many drivers does FEMA employ? Zero. Buses? Zero. Are you seeing a pattern here? LOCAL government failed, not Bush.

One last question SCC. Why did Team Bush gut FEMA and turn this once proud, competent agency into a warehouse for hacks and unqualified political appointees--like Brownie? I'll leave you to answer.

FEMA, like any other government agency is over run by political hacks and appointees. And it's was Brown's poor luck to be in charge when Katrina hit and exposed LOCAL incompetence. Where republicans looked to assist in a disaster, democrats looked to score cheap political points. Your guys are just better with the sleaze. Congratulations.

Sorry you are wrong about Europe. England and it's strict gun laws has led to an unbelievable rise in violent crime against it's citizens and it police officers, check it out. States in this this country with concealed carry have lower violent crime rates than our counterparts in Europe, and it's getting worse there. Not the most stabilizing, confidence building personality in the CPD, but rest assured, 35th st. is well aware of it. Like CW, she will either leave on her own timetable, or die in the chair. With regard to Mary, my money is betting that she leaves, she has other opportunities that await her, when she decides to cash in her chips. With regard to CW, I'm betting on having "the big one" while on duty. I believe she's still working on that second Master's degree, and if you leave in less than two years after completion, you're liable for the amount of money the City has fronted for the tuition, although I've also heard that the personnel div. has never gone after anyone who has retired in that situation. THIS JUST IN FROM THE BIG EASY!
I hear Shitney and Hitney are hitting the streets in New Orleans. Those tossed beads thrown from the balconies from highly intoxicated party-goers will bounce off of Shitney's newly sheared bald head. One could hit Hitney in the face causing an eye injury. Hitney will be forced to wear a mask the rest of Mardi Gras duration, thus blending in with all the Fat Tues folk.
Warning: watch out for low flying planes around New Orleans that are magnetically attracted to the Hit. This could cause another unfortunate disater to the already devasted greater New Orleans. FEMA is on alert. Maybe bringing in more FEMA trailers
that Shitney Spears may very well be moving into with her two chitlins that were born from the bloodline known as the House of KFed.

Also, Hitney could very well hook up with KFed who got bored watching Shit's kids causing a meeeoww cat fight between Shit and Hit. New Orleans Police on high alert. Domestic violence unit on stand-by.

Stay tuned for more the adventures Shitney and Hitney and the House of KFed.
