No Paychecks?

Citywide PDT message a few minutes ago (#070713). Seems the City is claiming a "printing error" and there are no paper checks available for pick up this morning. Some people who have direct deposit are saying that they got their money, but if you still get an actual physical check, you're out of luck.

If the City doesn't meet is payroll by 1400 hours, they are in default and lawsuits are your primary recourse in the event that automated withdrawal of bills and mortgage payments start bouncing due to insufficient funds.

Does anyone think Dorothy Brown might be able to pay the employees on time?

I don't understand in the year 2007, people still want a "paper" paycheck.

Think about it, you have to wait to get it when you go in to work, then you have to drive to your bank and wait in line to deposit it, and then wait to spend the money because your funds are not readily available after deposit. Not to mention, if you are on furlo or it is your day off, you have to take time out of your day off to go in to the district and pick up your check and start the above process.

The common response to my post will be, "I don't want my wife/husband, girl/boyfriend, skank of the week to know how much I actually make." Many banks have online banking so you can transfer money from each account to another from home. Or after it gets electronically deposited, go to an ATM and withdraw your money for whatever you need it for.

Sorry, but in this elecronic age, waiting on a check is foolish. I've been on the job 20 years and the city has never missed the 1st and the 16th. Any error that ever occurred on my check was a timekeeping error.

So one time in 20 years isn't so bad.....except I checked my bank this morning and my direct deposit went through.

Those of you who wait on paper....join the 21st century.

Was at the firehouse yesterday when the chief dropped off payroll. He said that the city ran out of paper to print the vouchers for direct deposit. The few people who received checks got theirs. We just didn't get a paper copy of our deposits that's all. I'm sure when the city finds the "paper" we will get a copy.

Off Topic, but interesting. Since it's Federal Judge ruling, would it impact us or do we have nothing to worry about since there isn't anyone watching our cameras?

Judge Limits New York Police Taping
By JIM DWYER
In a rebuke of a surveillance practice greatly expanded by the New York Police Department after the Sept. 11 attacks, a federal judge ruled yesterday that the police must stop the routine videotaping of people at public gatherings unless there is an indication that unlawful activity may occur.

Four years ago, at the request of the city, the same judge, Charles S. Haight Jr., gave the police greater authority to investigate political, social and religious groups.

In yesterday’s ruling, Judge Haight, of United States District Court in Manhattan, found that by videotaping people who were exercising their right to free speech and breaking no laws, the Police Department had ignored the milder limits he had imposed on it in 2003.

Citing two events in 2005 — a march in Harlem and a demonstration by homeless people in front of the home of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg — the judge said the city had offered scant justification for videotaping the people involved.

“There was no reason to suspect or anticipate that unlawful or terrorist activity might occur,” he wrote, “or that pertinent information about or evidence of such activity might be obtained by filming the earnest faces of those concerned citizens and the signs by which they hoped to convey their message to a public official.”

While he called the police conduct “egregious,” Judge Haight also offered an unusual judicial mea culpa, taking responsibility for his own words in a 2003 order that he conceded had not been “a model of clarity.”

The restrictions on videotaping do not apply to bridges, tunnels, airports, subways

To "direct deposit" a paper check is for a few reasons...
1. so my wife doesn't spend it.
2. its been 9 years and she still doesn't know of duty availability or uniform allowances.
3. it geives me an excuse to talk to the bank tellers.

2/16/2007 12:08:00 PM

Direct deposit just makes sense. As far as any "flaws" with it and the city just passing the error on the banks, it's true. The banks receive the information electronically by 0001hrs on payday, but it's up to your bank to process the electronic information to be deposted into your accounts making it readily available. In fact, on some occassions, it seems the money is there before midnight due to anticipated hoilidays, weekends etc.

So stop being old-fashioned and stubborn and get off your lazy ass and research something before making negative comments. Change isn't always a bad thing.

P.S. You can check with your financial institution and they will give you plenty of information on direct deposit and what may adversely affect a deposit. There aren't many. You have to admit there are more errors and "flaws" receiving a paper check. I'm not even mentioning losing it!

Some of us have little choice but to live check to check for the time being. if we want our children with a good education-- forget the public system, we'll have to pay out the nose for it. If we want to live in a good neighborhood away from the derelicts and scum, again, we have to pay dearly for it. And if we want our children raised by their fathers and mothers, once must be home often not allowing them to work. So to respo nd to your remark-- go f&*k yourself. Some of us CARE about how our children end up.

Off topic but important news -- our pension fund is only 50% funded!

Public pension funds' situation worsens: report

By Greg Hinz
Feb. 16, 2007

(Crain’s) — Pension funds of Chicago-area government units are slipping into a deeper financial hole, with their collective unfunded liabilities now surpassing $16 billion, according to a report released Friday morning by the Civic Federation.
The Chicago watchdog group said that at the end of fiscal 2005, funds sponsored by the city, county and other major units of government here had only 67.2 cents on hand for each $1 they eventually will need to pay anticipated pension costs.

That’s down from 70 cents a year earlier and well below the 90% ratio that many financial experts say is needed.

“Every Cook County taxpayer should be alarmed, not only by the sheer size of the pension shortfall, but by its rate of increase,” said federation President Laurence Msall. “Without immediate action, even the region’s few healthy pension plans soon will become underfunded.”

In the worst shape, according to the federation, is the fund covering Chicago Transit Authority workers. At the end of 2005, it had a ratio of assets to liabilities, known as the funded ratio, of just 34.4%, down from 80% in 1999.

Trailing are funds covering Chicago firefighters and police, at 41.8% and 50.7%, respectively. Somewhat better off are pension funds covering other city workers, city school teachers and county and park district employees.

The full report is available at www.civicfed.org

To 8:30 AM Poster:

Have a little faith in the US Banking system, still the best in the world.

I have had Direct Deposit Prior to my CPD days going back to the 1980's (US Military) and 11 years here.

Have never missed a Deposit or had a mistake. In fact, I usually have my money in my account several days prior to (actual) pay day.

Try it you may like it.

Or just continue being behind the times and making up excuses about "how it doesn't work and how a friend-of-a-friend never got paid..blah..blah..blah!"

Go stand in the bank line you fool. (Ha-Ha!)

Can someone explain to me what the purpose of the narrative section of the arrest report is for? I thought the purpose was to establish probable cause for the arrest, not to write a novel. Why is that W/C wants the novel version, along with all the other bullshit...event #, "has ID", gang affiliation, address of arrest, clear Hot Desk, LEADS, I.A. and J.A.W. The new arrest report has a section for all the above, then why do we need to waste our time and repeat it in the narrative.

Hmmm. Have had direct deposit since DAY 1. Never I repeat never has a problem, computer glitch, whatever happened. I have my check deposited to my credit union account its always deposited the day before payday usually before 2200 hrs, and most of the time by 1900 hrs.

Not all of us live paycheck to paycheck. Why? cause we learned to, and understand the principles of "Budgeting". We dont have to drive the newest car, dont have a high maintenance bitch. If we make a dollar we spend 80-90%. That adds up over time.

Tip for ya: dont have enough money?
Get a side job, Arrest people and go to court.

Tip 2- Reducing liabilities (bills) has a direct affect on the bottom line(available).

Some guys Range Rover literally covered in sheets of ice that somebody sprayed on his car after Rover owner parked in a shoveled spot. The RR owner literally crushed the chairs that were placed there!! The PO'd RR owner called the cops and they just about busted a gut laughing so hard. They said that they have never seen anything like it and it was new too them. The RR owner got real steamed at the cops and other people who came out too see what was going on. Of course nobody saw or heard anything. He started cursing the crowd and the cops who then told him too chill and take care of his problem. They said the cops will not do anything about vandalism too cars that have transgressed the unspoken rule about shoveled spots unless they witness the actual vandalism itself. I personally laughed my ass off watching the RR owner try to use a screwdriver to get his ride out of the ice block.

I have never had any trouble at all with DD, I have had it since it became available. The money has always been there on time, early by a day many times and once 3 days early when a payday was on a Monday.

To those of you that feel you have to "hide" your earnings, you have some serious relationship issues

I worked in 017 over 20 years ago where an officer took several checks that belonged to other officers, put on a name tags with that officer's name on it and cashed them at a currency exchange. He was finally caught by his own greed, he didn't go to prison, but he blew 15 years on the job.

Checks used to disappear all the time from the check box, took forever to get it replaced. I'd rather have the convenience.

The day the news broke about this officer's murder, Telemundo led off their telecast with this story. They're piece lasted about 6 to 8 minutes. The following day, Univison covered the story, and did a good piece too. They had an officer (can't remember his name) on their newscast, talking about the dangers of this job. Univision also talked about the reward being offered and encouraged all thier viewers to call police if they knew anything. Something I've never seen before, both reporters that covered the story for their respective networks, offered their condolences to the family of the officer.

well we don't have any of the TOYS you mentioned, we do however have 3 kids. We have invested by buying and selling real estate. Our house is worth over 600 and we don't owe ANYWHERE near that amount before you think of slamming me with your house rich money poor. We made over 100 grand in real estate in 16 months but where the hell am i going to go in this city with that? no where! All I can do is wait for retirement, take the equity and get out of this hell hole with no back yards and no police service in our beat. And by the way the I AM MOVING TO THE PD was a joke, get a sense of humor and go invest by cutting some more coupons.

i still have DD but am reconcidering. i did have trouble with ATM's in the early days and carry/keep a fair amount of cash as a result.
i once put honey on the windshied of a guy who took my "reseved" spot on a cold, rainy leaf blown oct. night and am sure he regretted doing it.
why would you fuck with someone and then leave your 30,000.00 veh. to take the heat?

I was at Brother Vasquez' wake.
Yes, I agree in a perfect world EVERY 'available' member should have stopped by. But there was a large representation of our Thin Blue Line. For those that were unable to attend....for 'any' reason, you can serve our brotherhood by a simple act of keeping Officer Vasquez AND his family in your hearts, thoughts and prayers, whatever denomination or belief.
Support our St. Jude March, Chicago, Cook County, Springfield or D.C. Memorials if possible and honor 'all' our brothers in blue.

Off Topic:

Poor Reporter was "Roughed up" by the County Hospital PoPo.
As I read the story I shed a tear for the reporter (Sarcasm) I Love it when the news reporters get involved in their stories they do not have the BALLS to actually participate. What I mean is that the media thinks they can go where they want when they want and have no repercussions. I'm sure the reporter from the times will bitch and moan like the BITCH ALL reporters are (Male and Female) Those who Do do, those who cannot become reporters. Oh by the Way, Chet Coppack is a Pussy.

When you need the police next time dont call then jagoff.....You are obviously the "Real Police" and have no use for us in 016 right??? We do more for the police than you could ever dream champ....IE; Driving home drunkin copopers, saving their jobs when they tune up their wives, girlfriends etc...I'll tell you another thing "brother" most of the coppers that complain that the 16th district coppers "don't do anything" are usually the ones that cause the problems....I suspect that you are probably one of those ...or have been jammed up by you own stupidity ...you'll deny that but thats ok...you'll still be the best in your mind and continue to whine like the little bitch that you are...there may not be much serious crime in 16 but we do take care of a lot of other police related issues....especially when it comes to getting other coppers out of trouble...that is worth more than any dope pinch or uuw as far as I'm concearned....saving your job is way more important...at least to me anyway..say what you want.

Damn some of our POs are the crabbiest, negative, whining bunch of crybabies I have ever heard of! I hope you guys back up coppers on the street because you act like you hate each other. Let's put things in perspective man, remember there was a funeral today, and unfortunately in our careers there will be many more. Let's not hate on each other for having or not having direct deposit, or living in 016, or for having highlights in their hair, or for being or not being the real police. Damn, we all wear a star and a gun, like it or not, we're all brothas and sistas.

I once in almost 30 years lost a paychgeck and it was difficult and off-duty time consuming to get it replaced. I also once had a traffic accident when I went to my station to pick up a paycheck.

There has never been a problem with my direct deposit and I can withdraw cash from a Chase Bank ATM anywhere in the country.

But oh the trouble I could have gotten into when I was young if I could have laid my hands on cold hard cash 24-7.

To the ones hiding the check from the pigs they married.... Tell the fat ass to get off the couch, get a job, and make his/her own money if your so worried they will spend your hard earned dolla.
Direst Deposit only shows the amount deposited. For all she knows its overtime. The same excuse you probably used while having a few drinks or banging some salad tosser.

the reason it all needs to go there is two fold
1. many watch commanders are to lazy to read the whole report for the information so it is easier to put it in the narrative.
second event # has id etc is to make it easier to track or make decisions later on

My reply to this tool is:

Not all of us live paycheck to paycheck. Why? cause we learned to, and understand the principles of "Budgeting". We dont have to drive the newest car, dont have a high maintenance bitch. If we make a dollar we spend 80-90%. That adds up over time.

Tip for ya: dont have enough money?
Get a side job, Arrest people and go to court.Tip 2- Reducing liabilities (bills) has a direct affect on the bottom line(available).

I personally know of 7 millionaires who are blue shirts, and my favorite quote from one of them is promotion to sgt? are you kidding me? I can afford the paycut.
p.s. they all drive cars 10yrs old or more

2/16/2007 04:26:00 PM

------and let me guess, you and your millionaire blue coats live in MT Greenwood and have refinanced your house 12 times in your "budgeting" lifestyle?

Keep telling yourself it's NORMAL to work side jobs. Then look around we are the only dept with guys working 30 extra hours a week just to survive here and to give their children a good education. What an idiot you are.You have no clue what is going on now. Did you retire 10 years ago or something? When the money was good?

that W/C wants the novel version, along with all the other bullshit... The new arrest report has a section for all the above, then why do we need to waste our time and repeat it in the narrative."?

Because 95% of the W/Cs throughout the city are incompetent morons who lack the necessary skills to be an effective manager. Once again wake-up, these supervisors aren't there because of their mental acuity.Sooner you learn that, the easier this Job will be.

Watch Commanders want narratives in the Arrest report because 99% of them were never the police and have no idea what is needed in an arrest report.

Wait, let me see if I've got this right. In addition to living from check to check and not being able to budget your finances, you mean to tell me that there people on this job that will actually drive into their station on their day off to pickup their checks? Are you telling me that these people can't wait until they return from their days off to get that check? I don't believe it. Learn to invest your money boys and girls. Save a little from each check, even it it's all that you can do. That way you won't have to live from check to check. You won't have to go in on your day off to get it. That way if the City doesn't pay you on time you won't have to worry.

Millionaires? Who? Guess they worked in SOS? or another "Elite" unit! The taxes here are high, we cannot send our children to the schools where the animals and illegals go as they are full of shit and the teachers suck nothing but a junior jail! Work part time yes I do to give my kids the best education, as opposed to the 7 millionaires I don't steal just work hard like many other officers!

if you are living paycheck to paycheck, you need to evaluate your finances...i'm not knocking you, i've been there in my younger days, and i haven't been on the job long. just giving you a piece of advise, it's worth not a damn thing and that's what you paid for it, but here it is, if you don't want it, go to the next post.

i live in a mt greenwood house bought in these high dollar times, i'm maxxed out in the deferred comp and still am able to save some cold cash. we both work, split the bills, have no outstanding purchases made on credit besides the house, and both save $$ (together and seperately).

pay check comes,

take 10% and stash it somewhere besides under the mattress.
don't touch this til you have enough to buy a cd or something else, most banks have advisors to help you decide.
put it where you can get it, but it won't be easy.

cut up the credit cards. pay them off and tell those people to kiss your ass when they try to get you back in debt, they are hyenas who will eat your dead carcass if you let them.

when you want to buy something, anything, ask yourself if this is something you NEED or something you want. if you want it and you have to use credit, get over it. the old couch still holding you up? save up, buy one with cash. that new phone/tv/stereo/satellite itching to go to your house? do you NEED it?

asking that will do more for your finances than anything else...if you answer it honestly.

if the girl/guy doesn't like/want you without all the frills, tell them to get lost and find someone you don't have to spend your "hard earned, do you know what i went thru to get this?" money on. cause when you are fat, bald, menopausal, or strategic parts don't work, they will take what little you have and leave anyway.

hope some broke copper is helped by this tirade.
