Evaluation of GPS

Rumors abound. We talk to people who talk to people who make up shit all day long. Such is the rumor mill. The latest rumors concerning the GPS over at SOS:
  • The electronic leash is tight. Supposedly, anyone caught more than 2 or 3 blocks outside of the DOC mission area has to drop paper. And the Deputy Chief himself is enforcing this one.
  • Canine Units have to be in motion on their way to roll call by their assigned start times or else they get a call from the Deputy Chief's office asking why they aren't on the way.
  • Paper records are being compared against computer records, including addresses where cars stopped, arrests submitted by the officers and any TSSS/contact card info generated.
Supposedly, a lot of old hands are bailing out, and the transfer orders seem to bear that out. But the inbound numbers also seem to be inching upwards. A result of changes? New lieutenants? A sense the worst is over? Anyone know?

The three rumors you have posted are true. I been in the unit for some time now and this is the worst it has been. The heads are low every day, the quality of work has gone done, and morale is at an all time low.

I know a guy who asked the commander to be dumped to the 6th district and he was told no. he could only be dumped to 5.

Then there are the two guys who were detailed to the unit from Risley's office the day before SWAT tryouts, just so they could tryout. Gee I wonder if they will make it.

Rumor is that Risley will retire with chubby so hopefully the unit will bounce back a liitle bit. I just dont know if i could make it that long.

This came from our Lt. who got it from a Lt. in S.O.S. More people than you know have access to traking the GPS on your vehicle. S.O.S. has had city hall call them asking why a certain car is at a location when they're supposed to be somewhere else. It's way bigger than just the Dept. Brass watching.

Bottom line is don't do NOTHING for this City!

The bosses can't say shit, if you don't do shit! Fuck them and their stupid DOC missions that are nothing more then pulling numbers out of a hat! Fuck them and their bullshit, waste of taxpayer money G.P.S.

What's the worse the can do?

Send you to some shit District on midnights! Big deal, we are already bottom feeders!

It is the dumb ass, yes men coppers, who allow the brass to walk over us like a bunch of whores!

We only have our selves to blame on this one guys! Wise up and man up!

as a guy who never spent a second of his 29 years in a do nothing sneak unit, Its about time they had to do something

I had to drive my own car to work and start the clock when I arrived at roll call

Then I had to listen to the radio and not leave for the next 8 hours and twenty minutes

I got 30 minutes for lunch in my district and wasnt able to not answer the radio

I had the pleasure of being rotated around the clock and picking up DOAs for straight time

I worked overtime for straight time and there were no PDs BFDs time and a half for holidays etc

I have no problem with the dept asking the new breed of prima donnas to actually do something for their salary

I earned mine

I dont pity them

As usual scc your info is right on...no one is spared from this GPS nightmare. Big Brother(allegedly someone in the mayor's office & 35th/Michigan) are constantly watching and comparing logs. Meanwhile they(SOS) have the audacity to send out counseling forms for low activity for the period.(can you say qoutas!) If the districts available for bid were better you would have witnessed a mass exodus.Keep beating that horse see if it still crosses the finish line....these bosses are great.

God damn, people, you get paid pretty well to do nothing! The least you can do for your paychecks is to be where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there. You don't have to be supercop, but at least be where you're supposed to be. You wonder why the bosses are constantly checking your locations and comparing your logs and all that? Because you all can't seem to demonstrate your own accountability to them. We need more ex-military people on this job, and less whiners.

Gee, now you have to do work because of GPS. No more sneaking off to do personal nonsense.(shopping) No more staying down on jobs while your traveling to lunch. This will keep the beat cars on their beats. If fact the beat cars should eat lunch on their own beat for beat integrity.

all you have said is true. there are people paid to watch sos in real time and cross reference gps data w/reports, comlaits, radio traffic, etc... veh. location/ status is known at all times 24/7. i've done search warrants and found cpd intel sheets in the target homes....seems the bad guys have girlfriends working at headquarters. maybee thats why the D.O.C is allways dead and a couple blocks away is teaming w/ activity. i hear tact/gang are next probably followed closely by tru. it's difficult doing police work under a microscope and sos gun recoveries reflect that. i wounder if the bad guys can sense the reduction in pressue? should be a hot, bloody summer.

Hello SCC, I'm retired CPD (9 yrs and counting) and moved out of the lovely city way back then. I now live about 90 miles away near Beloit, Wi. but still in the land of Blago. A recent article in the Beloit newspaper has headlines "Police and Fire Board Meets to Terminate Officer". The reason for this hearing??? His squad car GPS unit showed him not patrolling as required and his vehicle being stationary for a longer period of time than reasonable. The PO has almost 20 yrs with the Beloit PD and they are trying to can him for his GPS offense. Just thought I'd throw some fuel on the fire.

No rumors are not true unless you see it for yourself. I am tired of the "I heard it from a good source b.s." They can already track you with the new computers because the signal goes through verizon wireless cell tower. Its not GPS but they can get an idea of where you are at. The first rumor I ever heard was that the academy has been sold and that a brand new academy was being built next to the soon to be new headquarters at 35/mich.

I hate cops who boast to us younger guys about how many years they have on but yet they don't know how to do a simple case report and can't write a narrative for shit. Or the ones who are afraid to even do a simple paper job. I was on a job last night when an old timer told a burglary victim that if she did not have receipts for the items that were stolen from her that a report could not be written. Get out your pens you lazy asses.

SCREW SOS TRU, OR THOSE 19 WARD POLITICALLY CONNECTED UNITS. I WORKED IN A WEST SIDE DISTRICT FOR YEARS AND RECENTLY I TRANSFERRED TO 016 UNIT. 16 IS NOT PERFECT, BUT TO ME I FELL I AM IN HEAVEN. IF YOUR A WORKER AND YOU DO YOUR JOB, AND ARE NOT A DOG ASS YOU WILL HAVE NO PROBLEMS. THE BOSSES ARE NOT THAT BAD, AND FOR ONCE I MY POLICE CAREER, I GET TO GIVE POLICE SERVICE TO LAW ABIDING CITIZENS. THE BEST PART OF IT I LIVE IN EDISON PARK AND I AM MINUTES FROM THE NEW STATION.

If you never worked outside of
district law how do you know
what goes on in the "sneak"
units.
With 29yrs at some point you
should have figured out that
the po-po tends to exaggerate.

Shame on you for not finding a
spot. I don't pity you for having it oh-so rough. There is a large P.D. out there, and I found my spot. You were just
too lazy or comfortable to try
to.
Your loss.

Enjoy your retirement.
Don't let the bitterness kill you.

From, 21 years on with four to go.

I have seen the GPS reports. included are EXACT location, direction facing, ignition on/off, speed. Every 12-15 sec the GPS reports the above to the HQ. You can hear the GPS. It is wired in a way that causes lots of interference from the siren/air horn. You'll know you got it when you hear a loud clicking sound coming from the grill area. Forget sneaking and creaping on burglars and dope spots, it's louder than a turbo deisel paddy wagon!

VERY VERY good source told me that gang/tac are next up. My personal guess will be this summer, just in time for a new Operation Safe Summer.

I'll say TRU will soon follow. Then cameras in every beat car??

HAHAHAHA

TRU should be the next to get it. This would nip anything in the bud. These guys already think their shit doesn't stink. So stop it now before it balloons into another mess. Then put it in the districts. Shit even better is to have it put on all the brass. Let them lead by example. Have someone from the mayors office watch them.

Young dont mean anything and trying out for SWAT for sure doesnt mean you are a working copper
Good luck to the guys in SOS and stay safe

To the guy who never spent a second of his 29 years in a do nothing sneak unit.

You loser! You must really suck never to work in a "Sneak Unit".

I've worked in "Do Nothing Sneak Units" 23 out of 25 years and guess what? I probably made more arrest, recovered more dope and guns in one of those years than you have in your entire 29 years.

Oh yes... and I Sneaked around too....

Let's discuss: SWAT is not the police. SWAT are our hired guns. And yes we need them. However, just because you are on SWAT does not mean you are a good copper. You may shoot well, run well and look pretty but you are not the police. You are soldiers. The police are out here humping and preventing crimes, and sometimes solving crimes.

3/20/2007 01:15:00 PM

A lot of us beat coppers are "in shape", "can shoot well", better then a lot of SWAT prima-donnas. I'm so glad I got past the point of "trying out" for anything years ago.

Theres a certain calmness and stability in being a bottom feeder beat cop with no clout.
