funny thing about merit appointments of any rank. They make up about 20 percent of all the promotable ranks but i don't think one person has ever admitted to me that they are where they are on merit. in the interests of transparency and Shakman compliance, the city should be required to post a list indicating who has been promoted on merit and specifically what they did to deserve it.
Everyone is bitching about merit, will the union address this issue in contract talks?
Whats the diffeence, bookworm non-police who take tests better than others w/minimal or no "real" police experience, bet you there are more meritorious who deserve it than the top 35 or so who did well

Inspector Big Bird in Area 2 this period. Get ready for the pimpy write-ups, like getting a Sergeant to approve a station run instead of a Watch Commander or District Commander. Also, last period he wrote up a guy at O'Hare special employment last month for wearing a tie with the cargo pants (someone who is OVERDRESSED instead of underdressed)(a guy working on his RDO).
With all of the problems currently facing our department, this type of authority figure is exactly what we don't need. Catch the guys not answering jobs, sleeping on the job, not backing each other up, like the old time Inspectors. I have yet to see him write up someone for something worthwhile in a District. Judging from his assignment history, his time working the streets has been extremely limited. Believe me, it shows.
Hey, here's a thought----let's see him respond to an in-progress call, and actually assist in the capture of a bad guy, or at least write up the officers with an atta-boy letter. Nah, that won't make him look good. Morale is already bad, and he just takes it to another level with garbage like this (P.S. He didn't write me up, but a couple of really hard working people in 022---yes, they exist, no matter what the off duty posters on this board say from time to time).

Thanks to the 6 cars from TRU and 2 cars from SOS for burning up another restaurant in Mt Greenwood that used to be nice to the police. Maybe if you all showed up at different times, and even left a better tip, the owner wouldn't be calling 022 to complain about the policemen stiffing him. Corrigans called, 4 different calls about it.

I had an inspector one time in 007 named Joe Murato who assisted me and my partner with a hot car. He not only was impressed with the way we handled the situation but he wrote a letter to the supt. praising what a good job we did. Tell me if anyone will see that happen from big bird.

I agree. There are plenty of dogs out there, and we all know who they are. When was the last time folks at HQ's were audited for their lunch periods? Those cigarette breaks outside the doors would add up to tons of time I bet. Isn't there some law regarding how far away from a public building one has to be to smoke?
Why isn't an audit done on how many times a day folks from the auditing and control unit go on the internet? But this unit will be the first to march in the St. Jude parade like they're one of us.
Give me a break. Don't insult the working police, by calling yourself the police, when you have a desk job, (unless you're disabled from a duty related injury or a couple of years away from retirement)you're simply on leave from the department.
Yeah, don't go after the folks who beat up female bartenders, or abuse the medical. Go after the working officer(s)who come to work as they should and put their life on the line on every call. Yeah, make them know they're appreciated by writing them up.
Oh and make sure you write up the street officers who have a minor uniform discrepancy. Don't go after the folks who work inside and on Fridays get to wear blue jeans and t-shirts. Yeah that rule is in the general order where anyone who works at an inside post can wear jeans and a t-shirt on Friday. It used to be just tact or undercover officers dressed out of uniform.
I guess there must not be too much crime in Area 2 these days. If there was, I guess the Area 2 gun team wouldn't be up north in 016 arresting a middle class tax paying citizen who also happens to be a hunter and HAD a collection of hunting rifles. I say HAD because the Area 2 gun team decided that he must have been a hardened criminal and executed a bogus search warrant on his home, and took his rifles. I guess the guys at Area2 cannot tell the difference between a hardened gun running gangbangin criminal and a guy that likes to hunt animals and keeps weapons for that purpose in his home. Thats right boys and girls, the area 2 gun team went all the way up north and locked up a law abiding, tax paying, middleclass guy with no criminal history who posed a threat to NO ONE all for the sake of getting a CB number. Crime in Area 2 must be at an all time low. Or should I say YOU have sunk to an all time low.I hope you made da Mayor happy. You are truly an embarrassment to the CPD and any other American who has the ability to read and understand the Constitution of the United States. SHAME ON YOU!
I was in 009 in the 80's when Big Bird was a P.O. there. He was one worthless piece of shit as a P.O. The best part is, he gets promoted to Sgt & STAYS IN 009. How many people stay in the district they got promoted from? He then became the day desk Sgt who couldn't make it on time to work if his life depended on it! He was a tool then and is still a tool. Rumor was he paid to be made Sgt. He's from the St. Bede's area...an 18th ward hack. I had the pleasure of dealing with this jack-ass for about 10 yrs in 009 and now as an inspector.
Congrats to Tim W. ( Arnold's stunt double ) and Danny B. from the range! Tim, midnight's is going to be hell on your workouts! ha ha Always good to see 025 alumni make good. Just about everyone I knew from there has either been promoted, fired or in jail. Some had all three of those distinctions in the same year! Good luck guys!!!

Hey, 8:11 pm, maybe if Corrigan's provided better service to the police instead of treating them like second-class customers,they WOULD get better tips. Why are the police always the ones expected to suck it up and pay well even for bad service? And what a tool this guy is for calling the district and complaining. Boycott his freaking place.
Thers only 38 sgts names listed so when the list hits the station find out who is merit. they are not on that list. I know 4 of those names and they are good hard workers.
At least we have a legit list of some sorts! I got close on the last 2 sgts tests and studied my ass off for this one and am in the 180's. Take out the already promoted, stripped, old, tired and just dont want it and i might be closer to 130.

Here is one way you can tell who is merit. Not confirmed of course, if they were called today Thursday 26, they are merit. Off the list were called last week. Was told that due to the run off (aldermen)elections some of the creatures got their picks pulled out.

The service could not be all that bad since on any given day there are 4 to 6 squad cars parked there.

I went to two Sgt study groups, both of which were open to all who wished to attend, and I studied every spare minute I had!!! Congrats my fellow classmates. To all those who are complaining about not making it and putting down everyone who did make it saying it must be fixed... Think about all the opportunities you had to study yet instead went drinking, didn't attend 1 or 2 study groups, or just did not study. NEXT TIME JUST STUDY and stop the bitching.

This bitter mother fucker wrote me up in court for not having a tie on, I did have on dress pants and a sweater. He was not mad about that he was mad because he did not know if a nylon gun belt was authorizd to have, and I called him on that.

It must be said that there is officer in 6 who's name I don't see here. He was shot 3 times not 4 months off probation about 6 years ago. This is the first time he is eligible to be promoted having had the unfortunate start date that didn't allow him to take the sgts test last time but did take this one. I'm not sure why Doty didn't submit him, or if he did why didn't he get the nod? This is why the merit selections are off kilter, he deserves the merit nod not only because of being shot but he is a great policeman and anyone from the tact team will atest to that, one incident doesn't make the man but that and all that he has done since makes him deserving, hopefully next time Kev, you got my vote bro
And let it be known, I'm not begrudging all merit picks, there are some that are deserving of the selection based on certain criteria and maybe had a bad test taking experience that day, it happens.....

I guess spelling was not on the old list. Its spelled legit asswipe, look it up in the dictionary. Unless you are a brother and then you spelled it correctly, and we all know you would be meritorious.
I can say that Mike Popish did it on his own, and I am happy for him. I worked with him in Area 1 on the old A1 V/C Mission Team that D/C Jablan started, and he was great back then! Could not be any happier for a person.
Poppa will be a good SGT who will take care of the "WORKING" Police...

THAT WAS US! We didn't have a problem there and we TIPPED the waitress $20. We've been going there on and off duty for YEARS and they ask us to come in so I doubt they called about US! How did they call you if you work days? We will attempt to park our cars better...which is probably the bigger complaint you have. Maybe you can invite us over to your house (about a block away) so we don't have to eat in the ghetto-- maybe a BBQ? We work and eat as a team...THAT MEANS THERE IS MORE THAN ONE CAR! We'll park in 022 next time and catch the bus to the restaurant. p.s. Don't worry, the ghetto is calling and it's coming west...probably no more restaurants to eat at in Mt Ghettowood in about 5 years.

keep in mind not everyone is on the list. If your a Detective already and about to make Sgt, they do not put you in for the Area training as you area already there and one would hope that you know your job.
Danny McGuire started in 009 and didn't do any work there. He had an argument with Jim McGovern when Mcgovern made merit Sgt "saying you took my spot". Jake Blake who has business with McGovern pushed for him and won out. Danny you are a joke. Your spot! Fuck you. Go back on IOD for eight months come back and then go to SOS and tell everyone how you deserved it. Fuck you loser.

I noticed my own spelling error while reading the log this morning. Big deal, I had been up since the early morning, was typing quickly and forgot to review my post or use spell checker. You spelling police crack me up seeing that this is a casual blog and not a term paper.
See, even someone like myself who occasionally make an error can pass a CPD promotion test. To answer your question, however, it was not a spelling test. In short, go fuck yourself you bitter punk!

So the Area 2 gun team did it again. Guess there are no illegal guns in the area that is leading the city in homicides. That is why they have to sandbag legitamate citizens in 008, 016 & 025. And before the A/2 gun team defenders critize me, I am a working copper who has been in specialized units. As coppers, we are much more likely to take a bullet from a gang banger from A/2 than a legit citizen from some other part of town. I also recall something in the bill of rights called the second amendment, but that does not apply in the Peoples Republic of Chicago.

Thanks to P.O. Franelli (sp?) 008 3rd watch. you my friend, are a complete waste of a police officer. A couple of days ago you issued a parking ticket to an officer who was disabled on the job. Cedric Brumley was injured in a car accident responding to a 10-1 and is now confined to a wheel chair. He recently was able to acquire a special vehicle that allows him to drive and when you saw him you still issued a citation to him after he moved his vehicle and explained to you his situation. You are a real piece of work and a disgrace to this job!

As far as big bird, he has no integrety whatsoever,i know of a few people who he's written up and they all say the same thing , he wrote me up for being at this location when in fact i was at a different location from where he states I was. Either he's an idiot with directions (no wait,thats his strong point- being an idiot), ok he just a f%$^king LIAR!!! oh yeah he's the first to write you up for being impropertly dressed but I've actually seen him sitting in court at 26th and cal with short sleeve shirt and black vest as outer cover(his button and name tag were on the vest) while we're in winter uniforms, oh yeah when he left the courtroom he put his sweater on, but he'd write you up in a heart beat if you try explaining to him that you have your sweater in the back. and just like he told a p.o. in 014 a few years ago when they tried explaining that the black vest was not their outer garment (before it was approved as an outer)don't give me that, your NAME TAG AND BADGE are on your vest there for having your Jacket in the back does you no good and is not your outer garment you're out of uniform!! jag off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how can someone with no integrety actually have a concious? As a Detective I actually look forward to the "play" Detectives coming to the area for 90 days. A lot of them used to think we did nothing but play solitaire all day long and blow off jobs now realize different. They see our work load and how we are called when a supervisor cannot make a decision or is too lazy to look up the law and need our help. I have met many good people over the past couple of years in the Sgts/Det training. It amazes me how when I run into them later after they make Sgt how they tell me they wish they did not take the promotion and could still be Detectives. When I hear this I know I have the best job on the Police Dept. Good Luck new Sgts.

Cedric Brumley was injured in a car accident responding to a 10-1 and is now confined to a wheel chair. He recently was able to acquire a special vehicle that allows him to drive and when you saw him you still issued a citation to him after he moved his vehicle and explained to you his situation. You are a real piece of work and a disgrace to this job!

To the poster who claimed that they would be "F/1 Sgts. who never did anything," you clearly do not know these women. Neither has ever worked inside on this job; Ford has worked tact for years. It is truly a shame when people can get promoted on their own, being the street police (and in PATROL) their entire career, and yet still get bashed about by people who know nothing about them.
To the poster who was bashing Inspector Muratto, if that man wrote you up, you messed up. Seat belts are required, and it is EXTREMELY doubtful that Joe would have pulled a pimpy "parking lot" job on you, as you have claimed. If you got caught driving without buckling up, so be it. If anybody really sits down and looks at it, meritorious promotions are a good thing IF AND ONLY IF THEY ARE BASED ON FREAKIN' MERIT. An individual who has served the department honorably not while on their knees deserves a chance to better the dept. as a supervisor.
However, to give someone a supervisory position based on the fact of how well they blow their commander or the color of the skin or sexual preference----That my friend is called RACISM!!!
Just because their are x percentage of a given race or sexual preference on this job does not by any means determine that x percentage of them should be supervisors.
If a person deserves to be a supervisor, then so be it. If not sorry buddy, you probably should look at wearing blue for a while.

Congrats to all newly promoted almost sergeants. Cato, Sanchez, Callaghan and Sedevic congrats to some stand up P.O.'s. I just have to say something about this screwball Wooten. She may have made it legit, well that is questionable, just check her knees, look for the burns, but I watched her totally fuck with, then totally humiliate a recruit in the hall (the recruit was really cute at that) then change the whole story as she told someone else what happened. When I called her on it, she threatened harassment. I'm thinking the whole time, you are too fuckin old and used up for me, now maybe for some of my drinking buddies after around 10 beers and 3 shots, around midnight, she may look fuckable. She isn't even a fuckin instructor. They hid her at the Academy because she is a nut, her old best friend is a nut, all the people that talk to her are nuts, if you talk to her you will think you are a nut, and now she is going to be on the street supervising. She is going to be the everyday citizen's jackpot.
