Hmmm

From SecondCitySarge, we heard about this interesting survey on the Lieutenant website:
  • Would you approve a wage reduction of 1-5 percent in exchange for living outside of the City of Chicago, but within Cook County?
At last count, the numbers were running 38% yes and 62% no (42 to 69).

The survey is completely open to anyone who stumbles across the Lieutenant site and therefore is immediately suspect. We voted in it twice, once for each side. But it does raise an interesting question:
  • Is the Lieutenant's Association seriously looking into making residency and issue?
  • Who else is going to?
Discuss.

Why should we pay for something that should be our right?

If we move out of Chicago we would loose our right to vote, and Daley would screw us even more.

If we pay for that right what else would he make us pay for?

It’s a bad president, like the $2 per paycheck for medical care. If it’s 1-2% now, how much later?

There I am with the wife at the Jewel grocery store on Archer and Mayfield. As Im exiting the store with the better half Im pushing the cart and following a nice blue haired lady. What do I see a Nice new Jeep, sporting a checkerboard over the rear view mirror driven by a young mexican man, and lets not forget the FOP sticker and medallion.

The blue hair asks the man to move to which he replies "No Im waiting for my wife" Blue hair says if you dont move im gonna hit your car with my cart. Now the M/4 says from inside his car "Im the Police, and I will have you arrested". To which the blue hair responds (this is where it gets funny) "Your a FUCKIN Jag-off" then the blue hair pushes her cart swiping the Jeep! As this is happening I hear a loud voice say "Not all COPS are ASS-HOLES but this one is".

Lets recap recent events in which coppers are getting drunk and beating up Polish bartenders, coppers are getting drunk and beating up "business men" and either right or wrong stomping the shit outta gang banger high school student. We as the police have a public perception problem. Its bad enough we are making the news everytime we turn on the tube, but now some asshole appearently sober is gonna identify himself as the police while breaking the law by blocking a handicap exit at a grocery store? And wont move his vehicle forward about 10 feet? Thanks for making one more police hater when we need all the support we can get.

Officer ?Mexican? do us all a favor go shop in Summit, take the hat band off the mirror only goofs/asshats/PPOs do that. Dont Identify yourself off-duty only goofs/asshats/PPOs do that. How would you like if somebody talked to your mother like that? If your mother saw you acting like that she would be disappointed and think your a goof/asshat. So bottom line here....people like you make a bad name for all of us, and let me add as a witness to the event you are an ASSHOLE and a FUCKING JAG-OFF, and yes if you would have acted out your threat I along with several others would have been witnesses for the prosecution! Why? Because you were or should I say are a JAG-OFF!

I wouldn't take a pay cut, maybe take less in the percentages we get with each new contract (Not that they are anything spectacular anyhow). We still get steady raises but not as much as we would with the residency clause/statute. And remember, this is state statute that would have to be amended, re-written or otherwise repealed. I believe the statute reads for municipalites over 1 million (i.e. Chicago) for those that work for said municipalities must reside within the the city proper. Please correct the verbage, those that know it or have it, I don't feel like looking it up right now.

This is a very good topic and we must have state reps and senators on our side. Start writing letters to them now, even though the elections have passed. If we go in united po's, sgt's, lt's and even the damn firemen we have a stronger voice. But people must get over their respective ego's to accomplish this daunting task. I myself am staying in the city even if they allow us to move out, but we should have the option and not be tied down to King Richie's Feifdom.

Please chime in on this topic, for once this is a topic that almost all of us actually agree on.

No. It's not good enough. I want to live as far away from Chicago and Crook County as humanly possible. As a matter of fact, I'd move out of State if I could. I don't want one dollar of mine going to support this cesspool of filth, nepotisim and corruption. If I could, I'd even take steps to ensure that any money that I pay to the Federal government in taxes does not return to this State in the form of revenue sharing. So my answer to you is no. I won't give the City any money in the form of a pay reduction. Hope that helps.

LEGEND HAS IT:

That about 20 years ago, there was an OCD guy(when narcs worked straight days,SS off), who lived in rural Tennesee; he would drive to work from home for Monday morning, work the week, showering at the station, then drive back Friday evening. He did this for years until he retired.

Better check out what the taxes are in some of those suburbs you're dying to move into...A small home could easily be taxed at over $10,000 a year in many of them. I don't see the savings. It already takes me an hour to and from work everyday, and I live in the City.

The state statute reads that the issue of residency is not bargainable as part of a contract, which means that if the city does not want to address the issue, there is no way the union can force them to in negociating a contract. However, the city can voluntarily reach a deal with the union if they choose to do so reagrding the issue. The union cannot force the city to even consider the issue, it is the city's option.

This is quite interesting and a good topic to debate. I have one question for everyone. Have you ever lived in the burbs before? I have and can tell you that they are far beyond any corruption going on in Chicago.

Chicago is watched 24/7 by the feds. The king makes headlines every time he takes a shit. He has to make back room deals for everything. Remember who he has to deal with. Going to the burbs especailly if it isn't in Cook Cty do not have to cave to 50 special interests every time he wants to shovel the snow. Those who aern't being watched just do what they want.

I'm sure most of us know a few suburban coppers. I know my fair share of them. They all will tell you flat out that there is no such thing as a promotion in the burbs without getting on your knees and sucking and fucking the whole city council. No matter what anybody thinks you can have your lucky test day on CPD with our promotional process. I scored in the top 300 on both the last dick and sgt test. I don't know anybody and won't get on my knees except to pray at church. It can happen. I won't happen in the burbs. I know we could have the best of both worlds working on CPD and living in the burbs.

The only reason to move to the burbs has already been mentioned. That is the school system. Public schools in the burbs can be attended. That for the vast majority is not the case in the city. What we should be fighting for has already been done in alot of cases. Stop having shithead kids not from your area bused into your local school. It can happen. I've seen Taft being cleaned up after the take back Taft campaign. We need to make Chicago's public school system like the Burbs. Where you live determines your HS and grade school. Nobody from outside that boundry can attend for any reason. If only your neighbors kids could attend your school it would be a whole lot better. If somebody says some of my neighbors are shitheads, wake up. The burbs have plenty of their own shitheads.

The OEMC, the ONLY really important civilian agency, is considering pressuring its union to stand united for a repeal of its residency requirement while NOT conceding ANY raises or other benefits. A show of force on this issue, from the trifecta of emergency agencies--CPD, CFD, and 911--would force this issue to the forefront for next set of contract talks set to begin in the fall. Here is to hoping that these agencies can work together on this one important provision for all city workers.

Don't give up anything. The reason the city is looking for us to give up something for the residency is because they are going to eventually lose the right to make people live in the city soon. They don't want to lose that part of the contract and feel that they can get something for it instead of eventually getting nothing. Just wait it out. I know it sucks, but just wait it out. Who knows, if we wait it out they may let us live outside the county.

The FOP would have to do what the unions in the suburbs did to residency overturned sue. The courts have recently been siding with the P.O.on this issue. Chicago is a home rule city and the state law that gives the city the power to require residency aplies to Chicago only. A federal lawsuit (State courts are controlled by Ed burke and the democrats) would take time and money but would most likely be succesful. This is an unconstitutional law. Rockford won this same suit several years ago. and most citys have done away with residency.

To "Just curious". It really doesn't have anything to do with the city,it's the politics, social programs, taxes, schools, cronyism, nepotism, general socialist movement, and liberals that drives me nuts.I absolutely can't stand the politics here.People don't vote for their RIGHTS here ,they vote for social programs and benefits, there is no opposition.

Heard a rumor at a party recently about upcoming contract. Looks like the city wants to give us something like a bank account for our current comp time on the books. Whatever you have now will be worth your current pay. Your hours on the books multipled by your hourly wage. Any comp time earned in the future will be at your hourly wager when earned. They don't like paying a Capt's hourly rate when that guy retires when 90% of his hours were not earned at that rate. Or even a PO with 30 years on. He goes out at a much, much higher rate than when he came on. The city in return will allow us to sell back an as of yet undetermined amount of hours every year. Any truth to this?

You knew the rules when you came on. If you didn't like them, you shouldn't have signed up.

You think the grass is greener in the suburbs? You ever see the tax rates in the Cook County suburbs? Lake County? DuPage? Our taxes are miniscule compared to theirs.

You get nickeled and dimed over every city service. The schools (except for the North Shore) aren't so great--better than ours I will concede.

Where do you think the animal went when the high rise CHA buildings came down? It isn't just scattered site around the city. Hanover Park is experiancing a 10 fold increase in crime. Skokie sucks. Forget about the south suburbs. There is shit everywhere, even in DuPage.

Quit the pipe dream, residency is here to stay. If you don't like it, get a job in the private sector. But remember, in the private sector--they expect results.

maybe we present residency from a perspective the benefits the city.
( I know "screw the city") but expanding residency boundries will also expand the city's ability to recruit from a bigger pool of applicants. Maybe there are some quality suburban PO's that would love to work for CPD but don't want to move. Lord knows we can use all the qualified applicants we can get.
If the city thinks it's in their best interests to expand their ability to recruit, then they can bring it to the table for negotiations. If they bring it to the table, then we can fight for a fair and equitable way to put it in the contact for everyone.

The fact that is lost on alot of POs is the fact there are 2 cities.
East of the River, where those with the financial resources, walk their dogs w/latte in hand oblivious to the rampant corruption that surrounds them.
Those west of the river that have 2 contend with inadequate city services, rising property taxes& crime rates.

Hey JAGBALLS, when I came on the job I wasn't paying a dime for health insurance, but the city changed the rules!
When I came on this job, a high school diploma was just fine. I took a Sgt's test in 1993 & was promoted a couple years later, WITH ONLY A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA!! Now they tell me I cannot take a Lt's test because I don't have a college education!
I'll be honest, residency is not that big an issue to me, personally. But don't get on your soapbox and tell me what rules were here when we took this job! The city changes the rules whenever they see fit!
And by the way, race has nothing to do with this issue. The issue is the city can & will do whatever it pleases. Rules or not!!

No changing the rules? what department are you on? the city and job thrive on changing the rules as it suits them; does the promotional process ring a bell? or the college requirement that popped up out of nowhere in the early 90's? get a clue, the city does what it wants and worries about the lawsuits later. I think most coppers would like to move out of the city, especially black and hispanic....

"We vote..." the problem is we don't vote as a block under any good union leadership. Look what can be accomplished in places like Boston. There the cops earn well over $100K a year with great benefits. Why because they threaten to disrupt the Democratic National Convention and picket the mayor wherever he goes and they vote. If we move out, we don't vote and we will be treated even more like shit.

Google "Boston Police Union" and see what can be done when the mayor fears the cops, the firemen and other city employees as a voting block.

ATTENTION ANY LABOR LAWYER READING THIS BLOG: Find all the residency requiremnts that were lifted for p.o.s in other states. Build a case and collect money from every copper who would like to see this lifted(no one wants to live in crook county either). I would gladly pay $500 to $1000. Im sure finding 500-1000 coppers who would pay that would be a walk in the park. I think a lawyer with that kind of money would work pretty hard. In the mean time everyone and their brother, aunt, sister and cousin should file a lawsuit against the city for anything, for example fire hydrants arent bright enough and you trip on them, or The city dosent provide enough protection from u.f.os.(frivouls lawsuits are how the City of Chicago tried to put the gun manufacturers out of business). The city will have so many wars on many fronts. Their lawers will be swamped and we will seize the day. ( dont bitch about my spelling or gramar)

It would be nice to live in Lincolnwood or Park Ridge, but it isn't any cheaper. In fact it is more expensive in the places you probably want to live. I don't think you'll be able to purchase a home any easier in any Cook County suburb worth living in. There are lots of deals in Maywood, Berkley, and Stone Park. Don't give up pay to move to Ghetto burbs.

There is no changing the rules halfway through the game. I bet the majority of people complaining are white.

Vote for someone else. Run for union president. Do not just whine about it, do something about it.

I HAVE AN IDEA HOW ABOUT WE MEET WITH A BUILDER AND GET SOME LAND ENOUGH TO BUILD NUMEROUS HOMES, HAVE THE MAYOR BUILD US A NEW HIGH SCHOOL AND GRADE SCHOOL (HE COULD USE THE TAX DOLLARS HE GIVES TO THE SHIT PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM), WE COULD CALL IT COPLAND! FENCE IT IN LIKE A LUXURY ESTATE IN THE SUBURBS AND ONLY POLICE AND MAYBE FIRE COULD LIVE THERE! THEN WE KEEP ASSHOLES OUT OF OUR AREA! WE COULD BUILD IT MAYBE OVER EAST LOTS OF CHEAP LAND, AND THE AREA AROUND IT WOULD NATURALLY APPECIATE IN VALUE AS IT WOULD KEEP THE BULLSHIT POOR AWAY! CAN

---------------------------
You already fucked it up.....if your gonna let the firemen in then I'll just stay in my present rathole!!

The Mayor said ," If the city is good enough for me to live in, its good enough for the rest of the city workers to live in" or something to that effect.
How many calls for police service on the mayors block?
Do his neighbors get dropoffs from drugdealers?
Any gang graffiti on his block?
Im sure those a ton of little Latin Kings walking around his house.
The police, fire, and teachers union need to get together on one issue( residency). If we stood together we could run this city. Hell it might screw up the suburbs
but bring in the Streets and Sans union to. Those guys are all political hacks. However the more people we could get on board the better,
