Wrong Actions - Wrong Lessons

This is just plain silly:
  • Hundreds of students walked out of a South Side high school this morning to honor a classmate who was shot and killed on a CTA bus last week, and to protest gun violence in their community.

Three female students at Julian High School planned the demonstration, one organizer said. And others students e-mailed or text-messaged each other this morning to spread word of the walkout. At 10 a.m., they began streaming out of the school, blocking traffic as they walked in 103rd Street toward Lowe Avenue.

"We will not lose another one of our friends to gun violence," said senior Brittney Reynolds, an organizer of the walkout.
Noble sentiments, no doubt. According to bishop Larry Trotter, 12 Chicago Public School students have been killed this year. Arnie Duncan says it's 20. But how does missing a day's worth of education honor Blair Holt? Shouldn't some of these reverends and school officials maybe be telling the kids and members of the community to cooperate with police in finding the illegal guns? Maybe they ought to step up and tell their sons and nephews to stop selling dope? Maybe they ought to be out there helping point the tact teams, gang teams, even TRU to where the bad guys are hiding?

And then, the liberal press helps spin the Brady propaganda:
  • Describing their neighborhoods as "under siege," they called on lawmakers to enact tougher controls on the availability of handguns.
Can someone explain to us how a "tougher" law would have stopped these two criminals from wreaking the havoc they did? Neither had an FOID card. The gun was unregistered, probably stolen, and we don't even know if it's been recovered. The two offenders completely disregarded the laws that are in place, so what do they care if there's another fifty laws? That's why they're criminals - they ignore laws!

This knee jerk reaction is, once again, pathetic, and will do nothing at all to stop the next innocent from getting shot.

Tougher gun laws. People kill. Illinois needs a conceal carry law. The problem is not with the guns, but these two individuals. They each had at least six arrest while juveniles. It appears their parents let them run unsupervised. Hold the parents and their little darlings accountable. Don't blame the CTA or CPS. Blame the parents!!!

The American society loves its guns. Look at Hollywood, they glorify guns in movies. The time has come for guns to be put in the same boat as cigarettes. They should be shunned. Take all gun related shows off TV. Remove the toy weapons from stores. Abolish hunting in this country. Promote healthy lifestyles. Bike riding, baseball, kite flying, etc...

It was just an excuse to ditch school. If they truely wanted to honor Holt, they could organize something during non-school hours or the weekend.

Sort of reminds me of our FLOP leaders that make D.C., Springfield, and all the other fundraising events on the organizations expense account. Then after their out, you never see them again.

There is no way FLOP officials should get the money they do. If they had to live on their D1 or D2 salary they would be more interested in the issues of the common officer.

I guess the media is trying to show that they are not anti police by covering this event but they are really using the parents and the parents do not realize they are being used.

HOW ABOUT UNLEASHING THE POLICE OLD SCHOOL STYLE AND LET US KICK ASS AND TAKE NAMES! HOW ABOUT INSTEAD OF THE LIBERAL TIMEOUT BULLSHIT FOR KIDS A GOOD ASSWHIPPING IS NEEDED! hOW ABOUT LETTING THE TEACHERS USE A RULER ON THE MORON KIDS! NAW! It sounds good and that is all politicians want to do- sound good. The Libs who run the CPS and their toadies in Springfield will not be happy until guns are totally banned.

This is not new. The infamous Sullivan Law in New York was passed after businessmen were tired of being robbed. They decided to arm themselves. The organized Irish gangs paid off a legislator named Sullivan to introduce and pass legislation to prohibit citizens from carrying guns. This was in the late eighteen hundreds. The sole purpose of the Sullivan Law was to protect criminals from innocent citizens.

Nothing has changed. Our society is geared to protect life- criminal life. They care not for anyone else.

Want to be top cop? Answer these questions

May 15, 2007
BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter
Answers to four essay questions -- outlining strategies to confront police misconduct, build public trust, improve diversity and continue recent crime reductions -- will help determine the names of three finalists for Chicago Police superintendent.
The application for candidates to succeed retiring Police Superintendent Phil Cline must be forwarded to the Police Board by 5 p.m. June 12.

Police Board President Demetrius Carney has promised to present Mayor Daley with names of three finalists by mid-July.

On Monday the eight-page application drafted by the board and its search firm, David Gomez and Associates, was posted on the Internet.

It asks candidates for the $185,652-a-year job to answer four questions:

1. Describe and discuss the three most significant accomplishments in your professional career that ...make you ... qualified to serve as superintendent of the Chicago Police Department.

2. What specific steps would you take to continue to address allegations of police misconduct and to build greater public trust of the Police Department?

3. Chicago has experienced a record decrease in homicides and other serious crimes over the past four years. What steps would you take as superintendent to continue this success? How would you address those areas of the city that have experienced less success than others and address the persistence of gang-related violence?

4. Do you believe it necessary to have greater diversity in the makeup of ... sworn personnel? If yes, how would you increase the percentage ... from under-represented groups?

Ten semifinalists will be summoned for 90-minute, in-person interviews by the end of June based in part on their answers to the essay.

Of course the "walkout" is ridiculous. Getting an education and then becoming a contributing member of society would be the most helpful thing.

The American empire will not last another 100 years at this point. Walk into any public school and the "pupils" have carte blanche to roam the hallways. There are so many fuckups in these schools that the legitimate students are held back and their progress is impeded.

Unfortunately, I don't see any plan to help this. There is an entire generation of rats that will only breed a new generation of rats and continue to live off the government. When you're constantly given something for nothing, you do not have any respect for yourself or society.

I feel bad for the rare CPS student that actually wants to suceed. When the dickhead student finally gets expelled, it just goes and enrolls in another school on the taxpayer's dime. Must be nice.

This entire country is on the verge of self-destruction. No, its not President Bush's fault either. The groundwork that was laid 60 years ago during the New Deal has resulted in our current situation. If the politicians don't act soon, it may be too late.

P.S. Go check out my comments regarding the police shooting. God speed P.J.

I'm a Police officer from the UK and we're starting to see more and more people carrying guns either whilst committing crime or just because they see them as a fashion accessory.
We've been calling (for years now) for really REALLY tough statutory sentences for those caught with firearms. At the moment there's no real deterrent to carrying a gun. If you're really unlucky you might get 5 years (and only serve half of that).
However, if criminals knew that possessing firearms would add 20+ years to any sentence then perhaps they'd think twice. And maybe I'd have less chance of getting shot on duty with nothing more than a baton to throw back at them.

i find it utterly amazing how the police are the punching bag again for this incident. if there was a huge police presence at the high schools the ministers, the community activists would cry how we are profiling the youth but now a little animal makes a conscious choice to shoot someone, the police are somewhat to blame? i have a noble concept, maybe these blackmen who are producing these kids like jackrabbits should be involved in their sons life and teach them some morals. i submit for example how many times officers has grandma called and said my grandson is disrespectful and when you ask wheres his father? the grandma says hes not around.second the mentality of the black community has to change, fact !drug dealing, shootings over a woman,a dice game, has caused more destruction to the black community than, the police, "white racism", or anything else, but the black mentality in the communities is they are troubled youth and they need counseling. why doesnt the community sarting treating these thugs like the terrorists that they are and actually help the police to get rid of these monsters. i know no politician would ever suggest this because lets face it. these "leaders" get their power by keeping certain members of the community feeling like victims and dependent on them like children and if any black leader would ever lead the call for the community to accept responsibility for their short comings, they would be called "uncle tom" or "sellout".to my fellow officers all over the country,be safe! back each other up! and lets take care of each other.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Ole arnold is just trying
to deflect blame from a school system that can't
educate.

Arnold, with all of the $$$$ you keep requesting, and wasting, try something novel. Try getting the parents involved. Maybe offer the parents free breakfast and lunch. Once at school
try learning them a thing or two.

Hey Julian students, if you want to do something
break the cycle of dependence. Promise young Holt that you will graduate and this would be a good start.

Add another day to the school year to make up for the lost class time.

I wonder how many of you have worked in a CPS High School before. If you get the chance, and you work in a district with a "shit" school - you really should try it out for a day or two.

It really is something to be seen. I am a product of both CPS, Chicago Catholic, and suburban school systems in my life.

I think that the missing element that makes these CPS High Schools so lost, and I know it is the "unpopular" thing to say - good parental leadership and upbringing at home. Maybe having a father too, not just "bay-bay daddy", but an honest to God father. One who will slap that kid in the ass when he/she acts out of line.

This is a "black thing" at/in CPS...because in the suburbs the black students can get along - not so in the city.

I have worked at Harlan, Fenger, Carver, Corliss, and the like...never have been to Julian but dealt with the release after school. These kids are all missing that one thing - good parenting. WOW! It really is something to be seen in some of these schools - these kids have had no discipline in their lives, no respect, and no morales, and IT shows. They have a "Me" attitude that I think is brought on by all the handouts they are given - they almost think that the free stuff is a given, not a need, but a given right. The no big deal attitude is always prevelant in these kids. How do you explain free breakfast and lunch to a 15 year old who wears $150 dollar sneakers and $30 dollar ball hats??

IMHO, I think the problem starts at home and until the leadership of the CPS / the CPD/ and the Black Church Leaders start by mentioning this (then maybe we can really look at the actual problem) anything they do will just be a smoke and mirrors routine. I liken it to a "Wolf Pack Mission" really - what the hell does that accomplish? Just cover up things and do not mention the real problem - is this the democratic way??

The problem was not the lack of strict gun laws - we already have them in the Chicago - and it did not stop this kid from getting a gun, and a good one to boot. The police officer in me was impressed that the little bastard got a .40 caliber - this kid was intent on doing SOME kind of damage. The parent in me was horrified that he could get the gun, and hatch such an evil and STUPID plan. The he had the balls to do it.

I know I'll be called to task for mentioning the race issue, but as it has been already been pointed out, this kind of activity does not happen in Hinsdale, Naperville (White); and it does not even happen in Harvey or Blue Island (Black) or Berwyn (Hispanic).

TIME FOR THE PARENTS TO STEP UP AND RAISE THEIR KIDS, and it really, really is time FOR KIDS TO STOP HAVING KIDS!

I pray for the Holt family for their loss.

Truth is, it was a lot easier to get guns 50 years ago than it is now. There were no FOID cards, no waiting periods, and there even were many gun stores in Chicago.

There was more respect 50 years ago, not only for our elders, but for each other. Kids didn't think of killing each other, they thought of kicking each other's asses. And chances were, after the ass whupping, the two combatants would become friends.

Handguns are illegal in Chicago, yet this piece of shit killed Holt's son with a handgun. What good was the ban? The gun came into his hands through illegal means and that's for real. What good are laws when the law aren't obeyed?

The real problem is not the so called ease to obtain firearms, it's the willingness of these thugs to kill another. The gun was the tool, but that piece of shit was willing to get on a crowded bus and shoot people. What kind of civilization is it when people settle disputes with murder in their hearts?

THE WILLINGNESS TO KILL!!! That's the real problem. How do you address that? Well, since it took a few generations of broken families and "not my fault" legal doctrine, it won't change overnight. If we don't start educating our young people that killing is not the answer, it won't stop. And unfortunately, that is for real.

Baby Issued Illinois Gun ID Card
By Associated Press

CHICAGO - Bubba Ludwig can't walk, talk or open the refrigerator door _ but he does have his very own Illinois gun permit.

The 10-month-old, whose given name is Howard David Ludwig, was issued a firearm owner's identification card after his father, Howard Ludwig, paid the $5 fee and filled out the application, not expecting to actually get one.

The card lists the baby's height (2 feet, 3 inches), weight (20 pounds) and has a scribble where the signature should be.

With some exceptions, the cards are required of any Illinois residents purchasing or possessing firearms or ammunition within the state. There are no age restrictions on the cards, an official said.

Illinois State Police oversee the application process. Their purpose, said Lt. Scott Compton, is to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, those under an order of protection and those convicted of domestic violence.

"Does a 10-month-old need a FOID card? No, but there are no restrictions under the act regarding age of applicants," he said.

Ludwig, 30, of Chicago, applied for the card after his own father bought Bubba a 12-gauge Beretta shotgun as a gift. The weapon will probably be kept at Ludwig's father's house until the boy is at least 14.

I think you missed the point. The point was that there are not as many problems in Naperville/Hinsdale (White Areas) compared to CPS.

There are also less problems at Harvey (Black) and Berwyn (Hispnaic) compared to CPS.

At no point was it mentioned that these areas do not have problems, they do - to an extent. Compared to CPS, and all black schools in the CPS system, there is a HUGE difference.

Nice try on your nice try.

No more gun laws, we already have a zillion of them. Why do they work in certain parts of the country, but not in others? Time to put the fear back in the laws.

Looks like someone ought to figure out how to spell! What kind of education did YOU receive before getting hired by the CPD, Officer?

remember the mantra:

guns kill people and pencils fail exams

Silly Silly Silly ?

facetious solution:

Close P.Julian school completely and BUS the darlings to Norwood park , it seems that that northern area has less student shootings than the south side neighborhoods.

It seems that they know how to control the student body better and thus a safer learning environment for the thirsty learners prevails...better yet,

Close all schools with any history of student shootings and do the same for them all...send them to
learn the correct way and safe way
twoard educational bliss in the safe extremities of Chicago.$$$

Serious solution??? no, but it is no more facetious that the cry to enact new laws , redundant laws, that serve nothing more than kneejerk rhetoric. The current laws are enough!

The police know that the current laws are enforced. The courts know that the cases are inadequately adjucated (primary problem needing accountability ie. court dispositions)...

The city knows the current laws are being enforced by the CPD because they have to dispose of and account for the physical inventories of the recovered handguns. Let's not blame this on on the CPD. We carry our end.

Is there a "Culture of violence"?
Has the city administration been sweeping the problems under the rug of "the perception of safety standard"? Absolutely!

The social aspects of a gun toting, gang banging, dope dealing, community are being totally ignored because they point out the obvious.Even the numbers can't be tweeked by the most ardent bean counters.

The emporer is totally naked in this town and the "reverends", via the media conduit , have suggested that naked means well dressed.

Well dressed honor students, doctors to be, musical protege,"good boys" etc. we all know the drill after the fact.

Butt ass naked! Safe in the coroner's cooler on a stainless steel tray neatly stitched and catalogued.

DO NOT place the blame on the CPD, the LAW , as it exists, teachers, or school administrators, go to the source.

Go to the households, the parents,(both), the neighborly associations, the communities. Start there in the roaring silence after the burial. That silence is the same one that avoids the police when the shooter / killer is known by many. Print that in your dying newspapers. Print the truth and reality of failing moral ethics.

God bless the working P.O.'s
Like the song from the 60's said, "Don't let the bastards get you down". Be careful.

I love it when people scream about guns. A gun in and of itself cannot do anything but RUST or be used as a bludgeon by a human being. The gun must have the right caliber ammunition loaded into it, by a human being and it's firing mechanism engaged by guess who, a human being. Just in case we all forgot, human beings created these guns and the ammunition and sad to say the engineering to invent the firing mechanism. I don't have a degree other then a high school diploma but I think the root of all evil and cause of all of this tragedy is not the gun, BUT, human beings, homo sapien sapien for the college educated folk. Quit blaming a frigging tool. Motor vehicles kill more American citizens by a 5-1 margin and we call it TRANSPORT. So when I become king of the world the first thing I get rid of is; YOU. Then I know I might make it past 40.

These damn schools are worse than a zoo! These schools are nothing but "DAY CARE." It's just a place to go and hang out, walk the halls, lunch, sleep in class, and not graduate. CPS schools are useless, and violent. Students and their parents need to be held accountable for the students actions academically, and criminally. There was suppose to be a city ordinance related to school violence coming down from the city alderfucks, and it stalled, and will not go anywhere. I guess they are to worried about goose livers. Stop school violence.

Got to disagree with you there. When only one person out of 64 can not understand something - well then that ONE person is at fault.

I know, your parents have told you that you were good at everything, you even got trophies for playing on sports teams, and being in school projects and all the like. It really is good that EVERYONE gets awards now, so YOU do not feel left out. I know you are not to blame, it was your upbringing, the "I'm special generation" stuff that mommy and daddy told you.

You go ahead and keep on thinking whatever it is your thinking...and then show me what school in Berwyn or Blue Island is worse than a CPS school....

Of course. Had students on the bus been armed they could have no doubt prevented this horrible tragidy. Let's arm them all immediately.

What would we do SCC if we didn't have you to think for us?

Gee, another personal attack. You start a thread with B.S. and cannot back it up. Whan called out to back it up you instead deflect and resort to name calling. Very mature.

Sigmund -

I backed it up. I stated that the black students can get along in Harvey, the Hispanic students can get along in Blue Island, and the White students can get along in Naperville/Hinsdale.

You said : "Yes, I am calling you to task. It happens more in Harvey and Berwyn then Hinsdale. Check the stats for the schools there. More violent crime at those schools. Nice try."

See, YOU are the only one who missed the point Sigmund. YOU. What happens more in Harvey and Berwyn than Hinsdale, Sigmund? What? I think you might have gotten lost there. I tried to keep the big words down, to the lowest common denominator.

Again, Sigmund, I compared those communities to CPS, you decided to read the posting your own way, and NOT the way it WAS written, and YOU compared them to Hinsdale. Then you tried to get on your high horse and make a point about Berwyn and Harvey having more crime than Hinsdale....YOU THINK?!? Wow, you will do well on the next detective test with logic and skilled observations like that.

Get off the high horse, do not worry about a perceived personal attack, and re-read the post and maybe, just maybe you can acknowledge that you were wrong. I'm sure that even you Sigmund, can figure out why there is less crime in Hinsdale than in Berwyn or Blue Island, or Chicago. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on this....you have earned that much.

One more piece of advice for you, and it is free of charge. You really need to develop some thicker skin. Not sure if you are the police, I think you are not, and if you are the police, I'm sure your not too good at being the police. None the less, maybe you can ask the W/C if you can go for a ride-along with a real CPD Officer and see how being the police is done outside of the district desk, or the CAPS office, or some other inside spot.

Ahhhhh Sigmund.....

You can not face the reality that you were wrong.

Yet, you throw out "very mature" in your post - and act the opposite.

Such is the life of the radio room ....
