The Death Penalty Works?

  • Anti-death penalty forces have gained momentum in the past few years, with a moratorium in Illinois, court disputes over lethal injection in more than a half-dozen states and progress toward outright abolishment in New Jersey.

The steady drumbeat of DNA exonerations - pointing out flaws in the justice system - has weighed against capital punishment. The moral opposition is loud, too, echoed in Europe and the rest of the industrialized world, where all but a few countries banned executions years ago.

What gets little notice, however, is a series of academic studies over the last half-dozen years that claim to settle a once hotly debated argument - whether the death penalty acts as a deterrent to murder. The analyses say yes. They count between three and 18 lives that would be saved by the execution of each convicted killer.
Now we are aware that there are lies, damn lies and statistics. And it amuses us to no end that people outside of the liberal media and academia are finally taking a closer look at statistics and finding that the results trumpeted for so long are generally complete BS (see the global warming debate).

We really have no idea if the results of this study truly indicate that the death penalty deters crime - what we do know is that in the case of every single executed individual, not one has returned from the grave to commit another murder.

A Chicago police-related blog ain't necessarily the best place to trumpet the validation of the death penalty.

We all know why Ryan put a moratorium on it in Illinois. Nevertheless, there were a decent number of exonerations of people on death row in Illinois.

Strangely, almost all seemed to come from cases prosecuted by Cook County, and many if not most of those came from investigations and arrests by the CPD.

Its a harsh truth, but if that moratorium was accurately aimed, it would have been aimed solely at Chicago and Cook County. The rest of the state should still be able to execute whatever murderers they want.

The problem is, with the politics involved in policing and prosecution in Chicago and Cook County (e.g., the promotional process in the CPD), the public has little reason to believe anything presented.

Even if done with the belief that an accused is guilty, planting a murder case on somebody is something that seems to have happened in Cook County and at the hands of the old-school dicks far more than the national average. Which is why there were something like 90 murder exonerations and counting at the time Ryan acted.

Again, we know why he did it, and it sure as hell wasn't for the right reasons, but the fact that he could even do it with a straigh face is just another factor that points to how fucked up Chicago and Cook County really are.

Funny how the liberals never seem to bother to point to the preponderance of erroneous convictions occuring in Democratic Cook County when they are arguing in support of a need to "fix" the system at the statewide level.

Hey genious the vast majority of cases came from Cook County because that is where the crime is. The Cook County jail houses more inmates than Stateville (around 10,000 on any given day). Where do you think the cases are going to come from, Shelbyville?

That is the problem with today's world, commit a crime and get slapped on the hand. So you kill somebody go to jail for a short period of time and your out. What a deterent. If the so called bad guys knew that they would get teir ass smoked, they may think twice. This is the problem also with today's kids, they know that teachers and parents can't punish them. So they act up like little assholes. Showing my age, when I was younger, when I got out of line, I got a smack in the ass. And my parents were not arrested for doing so.

The Keesing Bandit says----

These DNA exonerations are horse-shit. Obviously lawyers have never heard of "whiskey-dick", mainly because most of them are impotent anyway.

Just because he doesn't ejaculate doesn't mean he wasn't involved all the way.

Now, kees me you fool!!!

Exonerations in death penalty cases? Really? Moron, you blame that on what you refer to as "old school dets."

Are you really so stupid as to accept the "fact" that those people were innocent.

Those were all political exonerations. I'm not aware of a single case where it was PROVEN that the sentenced offender was in actuality, not guilty.

You have swallowed the liberals interpretation of those investigations. Wake up kid, they did it!

God created "Possibilty" in that, anything is possible. Very difficult to predict events or behavioral patterns.
So, Man created "Probability" in that, statistically something may, or may not occur.
When all else fails, manipulate the data!
Make that study work for you.

The death penalty has never detered murder or any other violent crime anywhere at any time.

I support the death penalty in theory, but with the HUGE flaws in our Criminal Justice?? system I have re-evaluated my position.

11:10, here's one for you ya fucking moron. Not one case?

How 'bout the four or five ghetto knuckleheads that were incarcerated for 20 years or so for the Lori Roscetti (sp?) murder?

CPD bosses and the state's attorney alike swore that these guys were the killers. A week after they realized the case fell apart and they asked a court to drop charges, the real killers were charged (ultimately convicted and sentenced).

Exonerated doesn't mean innocent? Than how the fuck is somebody entirely else guilty beyond a reasonable doubt?

Yeah, 20 years ago some old school dicks planted a murder case on some kids. But hey, it was four kids from the ghetto, and the retarded one confessed, so the dicks didn't do anything wrong, like coerce the retarded one, right?

Give me a fucking break. You want to know why the CPD is a joke in law enforcement worldwide? Well, it starts with the set-up, continues with the continued defense and protests 20 and 25 years later, and idiots like you are the punch line.

Exonerated doesn't mean innocent? Boy oh boy, you want to testify for those in jail now for that murder that you think maybe the those originally charged were the guilty parties?

And to 8:52, 3 million people live in Chicago out of, what, 15 or 20 million in the state? 6 million in the region? Yup, there ain't no criminals in the rest of the state. Not in East St. Louis, or Rockford, or the other dead industrial centers. Let me guess, public schools, right?
