What's gotten into the Tribune lately? Has Col. McCormick risen from the grave? Has someone sprinkled roach powder on the editorial staff?
Sunday, they cover the Christian/Newsom murders in Knoxville, probably the first of the mainstream media outlets to do so (The New York Times sill hasn't).
Today, John Kass addresses the disparity in media coverage when roles are reversed.

- I've been in this business long enough to know that we tap dance around such stories, hesitant, uncomfortable, insecure, vulnerable to an in-house charge of racism for reinforcing ugly stereotypes.
By contrast, hateful white-on-black crime is easy to report as a cultural event. We're secure in it, eager, because we all know our parts as acolytes in the rigidly defined ritual, the victims, reporters, commentators, even the consumers of the news.
Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton appear to carry the story forward. They know their roles and play them well. The cameras click. Editors dispatch think pieces on race in America. TV talking heads offer commentary and what are called "town meetings" and "national conversations on race." Special-interest advocates use the media time to argue for racial preferences in academic admissions and hiring. Politicians mouth their platitudes. Editorials chant conventional wisdom.
As cops, we're in the prime seats to observe this drama first hand. And we're sure it contributes to bunches of stereotypes, animus, and feeds various feelings towards all people. We're surprised the Tribune, so recently sliding and rolling around in the liberal mud, even approached these subjects at all.

While they are finally telling this story, they are NOT telling us what really happened, what these savages really did to these two victims. When you hear the details, there's no way a thinking man could say that this was anything other than a hate crime. Yet the prosecutors down there refuse to call it that.
SCC it has been like that for years! Why? We don't have a white sharpton or jackson! No one speaks out except if your black and the offender is white then it is a big deal right? This case is horrible but if you really want to get outraged, read Mary Mitchell's veiled dismissal that this wasn't a Hate crime, it was just a horrible murder; just like the other hundreds of murders that occur in urban areas.
What she misses, due to her racial bias against caucasians, is that there is a reticence to report on crimes involving "persons of color".
How many times do you see or hear a story in the press about a crime and the offender's race isn't even mentioned? When you see that you can be sure that the perp is black or hispanic. As soon as a n offender is identified as white, his photo appears alongside the story.
Now Mary Mitchell is saying that the "facts" of the case are being distorted and fabricated. She says that this is because ... are you ready for this? ... the "embellishments" of the story are a function of "white supremist rants."
When that white kid with the heart condition was targeted, beaten and robbed in Beverly last year, the offenders said that they picked him because he was a "goofy looking white-boy" - the press had a field day with that and bent over backwards to take the offender's side of the story in order to dismiss it as a "hate crime".
Again, if 3 white teens had beaten and robbed a black kid in Kennedy park, Jesse and Al would have been at the kid's bedside, holding his hand for a photo op and then holding candlelight vigils all around the neighborhood.
People like Mitchell want us all to suspend our common sense, experience and intelligence and just accept their word that this wasn't a Hate crime.
This is exactly why Hate Crime laws are utter bull shit and aren't worth the paper they're printed on!

As a black man and black cop, I have read some of the vitriolic comments by those that I can only assume are my white "brother" cops who seem to have an unconscionable hatred for those who live in "ghettos" or on the "west" or "south" sides of the city.
I can point to more crimes in United States history against blacks by whites. But what is the point? The killing of the Tennessee couple was extremely awful. We should be more concerned about justice for the victims as opposed to the color of the skin of the criminals that committed the act.

Off Topic: Yesterday marked the 24th murder of a Chicago Public School student this year due to gunfire. The Slum-Times covers this tragedy on the front cover of today's paper.

This problem, along with every other socail ill that plagues society, and is magnified in minority communities, can be solved by campaigning for strong families. Yes, I mean a mother and father in a committed relationship raising, educating and loving their children...not the government.
With Feminism and the Welfare State, so many minorities women were duped into believing that they did not need a man to raise a child. And now we see that they were wrong. If we look at the U.S. jail and prison system we would find an alarming number of inmates without fathers. I'd be willing to bet that both the victim and offender(s) in the CPS anaylsis would also come from homes without a father.
Poverty Pimps, the problem is a lack of fathers, not guns. Start promoting "No Child till Marriage and 30" and watch murder rates decline, education rates rise, poverty decreases. Tell people NOT to have kids unless they are going to raise them, NOT me and the government. But then again, that doesn't fit your agenda.

Hate Crimes? Are there such things as Love Crimes? Like Crimes? Tolerable Crimes? Crime is crime. Whether you attack a stranger or someone you know, if you commit a crime you are a criminal. You have violated the social contract and should be punished. White on black, black on white, black on black, black on rye. Why the differenciation? As for the media covering crime they did an ok job of covering the Ryan Rausch beating in Beverly last year. Which was black on white. Although I had to email Mary Mitchell in the Sun Times and explain to her that the area west of Western in Beverly is not "upper class".
What I would like to see is some reporter asking a "reverend" why they may march after many police involved shootings, yet seldom march after any one of the hundreds of non police related shootings.
Cops shoot one person and the term genocide and racial cleansing are bandied about. What about the hundreds of other shootings that result in death?

Media heavily to blame for this racial disparity. Compare the coverage that results from a Lincoln Park rape to one that happens in Englewood. On the North Side, you get "team coverage" that lasts for days -- from the point of attack to the following day to the inevitable "self defense" courses that happen days later. In Englewood, you may get some coverage, but nothing on the scale of up north. TV outlets really ought to be ashamed of themselves for this blatant bias. But no one has called them out on it in any way that will change thier behavior.
If one were to believe the media, our politician, and our reverends, you would think that the A/2 Detectives under Jon Burge never arrested and charged a guilty offender. I think it is beyond belief that this is the case.
What is the first thing any defense lawyer does when he has a looser case, he cries brutality. Doesn't have to prove a thing, only muddy the waters.
The "reader" tried to do the same thing to Det. Kato at A/4 but thank God they didn't have much sucess because the allegations were such bullcrap.

this post reminds me of the time about 8 or 9 months ago that the older Danish (white) physicist was attacked on the green line in 15, resulting in at least one fracture. This guy was doing nothing but going back to his hotel in Oak Park when he was jumped on by at least one M/1 who was screaming something about how white people should stay out of his neighborhood. The offender's violent actions coupled with his statements clearly qualified this as a hate crime. The beat car that took the report was told by supervisors and the A/5 dicks to not classify it as a hate crime despite the obvious racial element. If the visiting physicist had been from Nigeria and the offender(s) were white shitheads on the blue line in 16 would the A/5 dicks and this departments supervisors had come to the same decision? I don't think I have to answer that question.

As a 14 year veteran of the Chicago Police Dept. and being a witness of the aftermath in many homicide scenes around some of the most violent areas of the city, I commend you on your reporting on this sensitive issue. Granted in this large city we read mostly about "gang related" murders but every once in a while you get a murder or an aggravated battery that is out of the ordinary. From the perspective of the average citizen "race" issues can be debated. People say things like the poor African American community is "oppressed" or kept down. I would contest that but for fear of some sort of this retort "blowing up in my face".
I believe the underlying issue is the political aspect of this problem and on one end you have "the reverends" and on the other end you have the Ku Klux Klan. But in the middle you have a lot of problems starting with jealousy then ending with hate. Whites would not want blacks in their neighborhood but blacks wouldn't want whites in theirs.
Generally, the police "everywhere" and I don't care where or what town you are in, see the "reality" that is never reported or even touched on by the newspapers or media. The police basically think at least in this big City that the media "caters" to what sells and who is speaking out and what bits and pieces of the real truths they may gather even though the real story is never released by the police here while the crime is being investigated. With this being said the consensus at times is that the police feel slighted and misunderstood. The Police and Fire by their general orders are not allowed to comment on a case or any crime without department approval. Our Department does nothing to cover us at least that is the feeling due to fear of the Media. We always end up looking "real bad" on TV and the papers to the average joe. I get embarrassed to tell people I am the police out in my circuit due to bad press.
Getting back to the hate crimes or racial tensions that are issues, one needs not to go any further than any yuppie area of this city. What do the police see? Well how about the fact that a large percentage of police families would never want to live nor raise a family around let's say Wrigley Field area. That is a "soft" area to do police work in, considering our many "ghettos" so it should be nice, not necessarily.
The average yuppie just figures that the wandering black homeless and young black males that inter mingle with their everyday activity, is just like downtown or its City living, or it comes with the territory and one yuppie would say, "Wow I really live in Chicago now". Well the average police know different. We see yuppies as their own problems, they are nothing but naive victims and we laugh to ourselves as they spend numerous amounts of money to live amongst supposed ex-murderers, arsonists, rapists, burglars and thieves. Police statistics can be hidden and unreported to support the growing and evolving neighborhoods so these yuppies buy the town homes and condos. But most police on the job know different.
Example: How about that nice black female that everyone gave a dollar to daily at the corner or in the hallway of their "nice " apartment building or in the alley. Well she just burned the apartment down killing a couple of her donors in Wrigleyville. Is she nuts? Is she secretly happy about her vindictive deed? Who knows but I know where I live and who my neighbors are and if I saw someone like her in my area I would call the police for fear of her being suspicious to my neighborhood. A name check may be done as police encounter her or maybe a well being check to determine if she needed to go to a hospital for "mental reasons". When you live in a transient area nobody cares about anybody nor does anybody really consider anyone else.
This is an example of just one thing, but what about the "robberies and burglaries" from the wandering unknowns that prey on the "naive" and believe me ex-cons and street wise folks know who is "naive". Is there any racial thought put into their victimization? I would say yes to you but not get on the TV and debate it. Common sense here is an issue, ask most "ghetto police or even fire personnel". We get attacked as much as the average yuppie or out of towner or lost soul downtown. Yes there is "hatred" involved when we get involved as a victim to a battery of a peace officer or fireman. THEY HATE US in the ghetto! But we are the first ones they call. 911 and OPS are on their speed dials of their cell phones, THEY LOVE AND HATE US! Both police and fire.
That is not the issue in my neighborhood. Respect for the neighbors and their kids, that is the primary feeling in a nice neighborhood and then respect for police and fire and their jobs. Most of us listened in drivers education class to pull to right for the sirens and lights. Not true in some neighborhoods. Is this disrespectful or ignorance?
Racial issues: Are they angry? Do they hate? Are they victims? Do we create excessive programs for them that cost taxpayers? Do they work? Can they work? Will they work? Is drug dealing, stealing and doing nothing easier? Is it the white folks fault? Is it the police and fire's fault? Is it their fault?
I believe opportunity dictates the crime and the hatred comes from within whether its white on black or black on white. Will it ever rectify? Can it be corrected or healed? Do we get involved or just avoid it and ignore it? Will these issues get someone elected or demoted or fired? Will you get killed or live? Can you move away from it and get out?
Well the last question is an big issue for most City workers and especially for police and fire but not an answer as for racial tension as far as I know!

This fool stated, "It's sad that adults care more about their right to keep and bare arms than the safety of their children." WHAT A JACKASS!! We care about our kids that's why they won't be in a gang, out all night, and in school(mostly private schools because we care so much). The honest law biding adults don't shoot guns at people, don't sell their guns to criminals, and raise their children right. WRONG! Look at DOJ statistics blacks commit far more crimes against whites than whites have committed against blacks. Also, blacks committ tons of crime against their own race. The reason you can point out so many of these white on black crimes is because they have been iluminated in the press and the history books.

I don't mean to characterize minorities as animals, because they are not. People should be judged by their behavior, not their color, and when they behave like murderous animals, they should be treated as such.

One word. Perception. While I'm sure they do not speak for all, there is yet to be a black person to publicly tell them to shut it. Panther Rush, or Jessie, or Al, or naming a street after a black "activist", draws NO criticism from blacks, at least PUBLICLY. THAT fuels perception that this is representative of most blacks. Here's one for you: Sources claim that a young special education teacher was brutally raped in a parking lot at the University of Illinois-Chicago a few weeks back.
The savage offender, in addition to "getting some ass," severly beat his victim who was hospitalized for several days.
I have not heard a single word of this crime in the media! If I missed the story, please enlighten me. I do know this: If a rape takes place in Lincoln Park it becomes a 7 minute fluff piece complete with interviews of stupid young women donning head phones while walking alone and the police sketch of the male offender who is either white, black or Hispanic (we never are told).
If you have a family member that works or attends school at UIC or even in the nearby Medical District then you should be mad as hell for not hearing anything about this story! Has the community alert been issued? Sources also claim that there has yet to be a follow up by the Dicks.

As it should be, there are no "hate crime" statutes on the books in Tennessee or Kansas. A hate motive is extraneous to the successful prosecution of a capital murder case. You can't execute the condemned twice!
I have no objections for an escalated penalty for crimes other than capital murder which are substantively motivated by hate (i.e.: tagging a synagogue with swastikas). Otherwise, like "stricter gun laws", "hate crime laws" are nothing more than part of the repertoire of proselytizing, mealy-mouthed politicians like da Mare.
Based on the explicit details of the Christian-Newsom murders and "the Wichita Massacre", these atrocities were inherently and substantially motivated by racial animus. RES IPSA LOQUITUR (the thing speak for itself). In both outrages, torture is manifest hatred.
As in Chicago, cowardly politicians exert control over the media spin in such heinous and unspeakable atrocities. Do you really think that local politicians wouldn't silence a truthful police spokesperson or a prosecutor who publicly declared that these crimes involved deep racial hatred?
Subsequently, the mainstream national media (MSM) will not even consider that racial hatred was involved because the police are less than forthcoming. Ergo, aside from local coverage, the MSM will insist that the crime isn't "newsworthy". MSM would insist that each defendant sign an affidavit stating that "I hate honky, cracker white muthafuckers." It ain't gonna happen.
Conversely, the entire planet was subjected to a relentless, year-long barrage of sustained coverage of the tragic and separate murders of James Byrd, Jr. (Jasper, TX) and Matthew Shepard (Laramie, WY), all by the New York Times and its MSM ilk.
Furthermore, the condescending MSM inexorably insult our intelligence by suppressing coverage of violent interracial crimes between strangers in which more than ninety percent of the predators are black. It's just FACT. We realize that no group suffers the scourge of black violence more than decent, law-abiding blacks.
My kudos to the Tribune for having the integrity and courage to publish an unbiased report in these "politically correct" times.

Definitely agree with that. I'm with ya on this. As P.O.'s we gotta step up and do or little fair share. It seems like one in three cars are suspended. I don't hesitate to hook the ride. Only problem is usually the car is "stolen" back from the police station before the city even dispatches the tow.
It's my absolute pleasure to ensure that driving is not a right in society, but a privelage. Let them cry racial profiling or whatever, cars gotta go.

Of course we as police are always concerned about justice to thoes who deserve it, regardless of color, but there is a great double standered here when it comes to the media and black on white crimes. Remember this horrific incident occurred over six months ago, if not longer, and a very few percent of the population has heard of it. If 5 white people did this to a black couple it would be covered on more news outlets than the Paris Hilton saga and possibly on the level of the Iraq war. To this day we still hear about the black male(Byrd) who was killed in Texas by two white males and that incident occurred at least ten years ago.
Just the other day I was with my brother and his wife who are the same age as the couple that was killed and when I spoke of this incident they said they have never heard of it. I watch, read, and listen to a great deal of news and can't remember seeing this story on TV. Political correctness is destroying American slowly and in many different ways.

As a black man and black cop, I have read some of the vitriolic comments by those that I can only assume are my white "brother" cops who seem to have an unconscionable hatred for those who live in "ghettos" or on the "west" or "south" sides of the city.
I can point to more crimes in United States history against blacks by whites. But what is the point? The killing of the Tennessee couple was extremely awful. We should be more concerned about justice for the victims as opposed to the color of the skin of the criminals that committed the act.
Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton DO NOT represent the views of all black people in this country, but if you read the many racially tinged comments on this blog from throughout the last year, it would appear as if my allegedly intelligent "fraternal brothers and sisters" think that this is so. Where is your common sense?

At the station I work at, we block in cars that are scheduled to be towed by squad cars in a section of our lot! When the tow shows up, the desk crew moves he squad, and the car gets hooked.
If we want a car towed, we can get it towed!! Why aren't all the stations doing this, if that's what it takes? Gotta hurt these morons we deal with on a daily basis, and nothing hurts them more than tickets and tows!!
