Since there is an open post I'll post to all PO's who are interested in bettering themselves.
There is a street style defense class offered at kbmartialarts.com in the Jefferson park neighborhood. It's given by a multiple level blackbelt who has a police backround (not CPD) and knows his stuff. The format is open during instruction and they want you to bring in your own senarios and they will teach you how to lawfully defend yourself in bad situations. The stuff they teach is incredible, and stays away from blunt force trauma which will keep the new OPS off your backs. The classes meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8 PM and if you are interested just come and see if you like it all are welcome from law enforcement, county, state etc. Log onto the website www.kbmartialarts.com for the info to call address etc. I do not believe they've updated their website to reflect the classes yet but call for info. And no, this typer as o financial interest in the classes, I'm a student.

Hows this for a topic?

California gets one right!

By Paul T. Rosynsky, Oakland Tribune - Jun 12 2007

OAKLAND — For the first time since the death penalty was reinstated in California 31 years ago, an Alameda County jury has issued a death sentence to a cop killer.

Irving Alexander Ramirez, 26, of Newark should be executed for fatally shooting San Leandro Police Officer Nels “Dan” Niemi seven times in July 2005, the jury ruled Monday.

The jury returned the death sentence after 31/2 days of deliberations, giving District Attorney Tom Orloff a victory in his return to the courtroom after a 12-year absence.

Family members and friends of the slain officer cheered quietly in the Oakland courtroom of Judge Jon Rolefson as the verdict was read. Uniformed police officers pumped their fists in the air and relatives of Niemi began to cry.

“Today was for the district attorney, the San Leandro Police Department and officers in general,” said Jim Niemi, Dan’s brother. “There is no happiness here. Nobodywins in this.”

Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, about a dozen relatives of Ramirez sat in shock upon hearing their loved one would be put to death by the State of California. The family later issued a statement.

“The pain that we are experiencing in these moments is indescribable. Our hearts are with Irving,” the statement said. “We also do feel the pain of the officer’s family and we extend our care to his family and those affected.”

On July 25, 2005, Ramirez unloaded a clip from his 10 mm handgun into Niemi in hopes of escaping jail time for a probation violation, police said.

Niemi was responding to a disturbing-the-peace call at Doolittle Drive and Belvedere Avenue in San Leandro when he encountered Ramirez, who had drugs and guns in his possession and feared returning to jail for those parole violations.

The first shot hit Niemi in the chin after the officer turned his back on the then 23-year-old. After Niemi fell to the ground, the Newark resident stood over him and fired his gun six more times, ensuring the death of the officer.

Niemi was the first San Leandro police officer killed in the line of duty in four decades.

“While we are happy with the outcome, there are no winners,” said San Leandro Police Chief Dale S. Attarian.

The chief said “if ever there was a case that deserved the ultimate penalty, this was it. The jury saw that somebody needs to protect the people that protect them.”

That is one of the reasons Orloff decided to personally try the case, he said after the verdict was read.

“I thought it was an appropriate case for the district attorney to try to make a statement to show how serious it is to kill a police officer,” Orloff said. “And I miss it.”

Orloff said the fact that Ramirez shot Niemi seven times before running from the scene proved it was a horrendous act that deserved the ultimate penalty.

“That makes the difference,” he said when asked why other cop killers did not receive the death penalty. “The fact that the officer was not just shot once, he was shot six times as he laid on his back on the concrete.”

The jury’s decision to put Ramirez to death comes after it convicted him of first-degree murder with special circumstances.

Niemi had been on the force for three years when he died. He left behind a wife and two children.

“Oh, God,” said Dionne Niemi, the wife of the slain officer, reacting to the sentence Monday.

Later, Dionne Niemi thanked the jury “not just because of the verdict we wanted but because the jury is outstanding, intelligent and thoughtful.”

Ramirez’s defense team, Deborah Levy and Michael Berger, had hoped the jury would consider their client’s troubled youth as they argued for life in prison without parole instead of death.

They both admitted their client killed the officer, and it was a “horrendous act” that hurt not only Niemi’s family but the entire San Leandro Police Department.

However, they argued, the crime did not amount to a death penalty.

Ramirez was young and troubled and too drunk to realize what he was doing, they argued. He did not plan to kill Niemi and he did not have a history of violent acts toward others, they said.

Instead of death, Levy argued, Ramirez should have received life behind bars without the possibility of parole.

“Irving Alexander Ramirez is not the worst of the worst amongst us,” Levy said during closing arguments. “He is not an individual that deserves the death penalty.”

Levy and Berger declined comment after the verdict.

But Ramirez’s family said in a statement they hoped their relative’s act could serve as a lesson to others with troubled children.

“We can all make a difference if we listened to one another in each of our times of needs,” the statement read. “Take time to see who your son or daughter are and get to know them. Let them know, with every chance you get, that you love them with all your heart.”

AAhhhh, Puerto Rican weekend in Humboldt Park. Is it just my imagination or have we really lost the park. For being just the first night, it seemed that the beast had reared its ugly head and was running around like crazy. In the past there was more of a police presence. Are there less police detailed to the park because the tma's are directing traffic and the bosses think the manpower isn't necessary?
Those that are detailed, watch your back and your partners also. It's hard to understand your location on the radio when you are running and yelling into the radio at the same time.

to my fellow officers we are in a new era of policing.we are in a police department where we can not even get proper equipment to do our jobs.we are about to have a "ops" report to a man who hates us and who is also so scared shitless of so called "community leaders" who hate the police that if any one of us was involved in a situation like that sgt with rev. meeks,we would be thrown to the wolves.it is time to get back to basics. the most important mission we have is to make sure that every officer we see at roll call arrives at check off safe and not in the hospital. if we accomplish this we completed our mission and we won for another day. a way we can accomplish this is that if you see the blue lights flashing, stop no matter who it is even if you do not like the person, because the person you do not like can one day be the only thing that keeps you from being hurt or killed. i would like to call on all my fellow officers to end the petty beefs with each other and get back to being a family like the old days. im sure the officers who are retired and in the kma club can relate on how the police used to be a family,. it does not matter how much time you have on the job, what race, sex you are ,we all want one basic thing,to do what we have to do at work to make a living for ourselves are families and are loved one and to go home safe to our families. lets not let all the petty beefs distract us on whats truly important and lets be good to each other because at the end of the day all we have is each other to get through the day.to my fellow officers, god bless you, be safe and lets be good to each other.

If you have a loved one who was retired from cpd that passed away and you are looking to have the funeral on the south side, dont bother calling the commander of 022, he will not send a car. I did not know he was that way until my uncle passed and was a chicago police officer for 40 years before he retired. We asked for a car and were refused by the commander. I am not a police officer but i will bet that anyone in commander garrity's family who passes gets a police car weather they are the police or not. Just wanted to let you great men and women know if you did not know what kind of a man pat garrity is. You guys deserve at least that much respect from chicago when you pass and have dedicated your life to serve the city. My uncle gave 40 years of his life to the job and could not get 1 car to escort him to his final resting place in chicago ridge. That my friends is sad.

Why, with the addition of the 3rd TRU platoon, are officers still being detailed to Garfield Park on the weekends?

Certainly they could get their fill of contact cards, impounds, tickets, etc. there instead of depleting manpower in districts that run with only the primary beats manned, and some of those beats with one man cars.

But then again, some work is too good for these "elite" units.

Vehicle Sticker), to help repair the roads and the suburbanites need also to pay something" Great Idea how will they implement "maybe we could use cameras and sens a bill" Would be funny but it is true! Here is a great question for huberman why do his ironworkers make 250-300K a year with all the overtime and the majority live in indiana because it is cheaper? HMM maybe ed burke could look into this with luberman and tax them huh! They take all the tax money we pay from the state and spend it all in indiana maybe indiana could give them these type of jobs! 6/13/07 1:50 p.m.

My condolences on the loss of your uncle, most importantly.

Second, I am a P.O. in 022, and I can tell you that we have never turned down a funeral request called in to the station. If your uncle worked in another unit, it is that unit that is supposed to do the escort, not 022. As it is, we do 2-3 escorts per day. With all of the retired PO's from other units, we couldn't possibly do all that are called in. Ask officers from 008 or 016. They don't do every escort either, just the ones where the officers unit can be identified. In the event that we cannot figure out what unit the officer worked in, we still do the escort to make sure it is not left alone. The same goes for an officer's family member.
While we are happy to do such escorts, you should know that the south side reverends are now demanding police escorts on their family members funerals. We are getting 1-2 of those a week, sometimes going out to Joliet at the order of high ranking exempts (Hello, Dana Starks !!!).
Please give me the name of your family member so I can fully verify. I am in the KMA club for activity, so I will call him out if indeed that happened as you said. My suspicion is more that your uncle's unit said to call us so they wouldn't have to do it.
Also, keep in mind that with doing so many escorts daily, your availability of cars to handle hot calls is decreased even more than before. Keep this in mind, everyone who lives on 2211 (the first car picked after any foot route guys).

Hey jagoff, we would LOVE to be in 011, but for some reason they are keeping all our companies in area 2, level 2 and Level 1 docs, it's been that way since Jan 1st, we just recently has a company assigned to 010 in the level 2 doc, other than that it's been all area 2 , They have safe summer there every weekend anyway and then they bitch about that. Manpower shortage? Now that is funny. Yeah, like when the daily gang wars are breaking out at school dismissals, and the districts are in a constant backlog, then you go into the district station to go home or do a report and the inside, so called police are walking around, out of uniform, or playing on the internet. Man power shortage, yeah ok. What a joke.

How bout better management of manpower resources?

Calls are made from City hall bigwigs and the brass at the tower
(35th st), and those requests take precedence over your 40 yr. veteran PO relative. IT IS WHAT IT IS.

First off, the deceased officer shouldn't be thought of as "your 40 yr. veteran P.O.relative". As a member or retired member, he is "OUR" veteran and should be treated in death, as in life, with the utmost respect and honor.

2nd This is really sad. One officer or supervisor,ONE, can't be found for 1 or 2 hrs. to escort an officer who dedicated 40 yrs. of his life to the city, people and police department, to his resting place. Building a memorial means nothing if we can't fulfill a simple request.

How very sad.

You need an entire unit to fulfill every request for a funeral escort.... and it is usually a full day, not just an hour or two, AND you try to find 1. a working vehicle that isn't being used (The famous "just use one of your extra cars" to do it, I defy anyone to find an "extra" car - we don't have enough vehicles to supply all the 2nd watch authorized beats, where would we get a car to send out on an escort? and the personnel to do it with in most districts. The front office people and caps are not at the disposal of the watch, so forget that.
I am not saying that is wouldn't be nice, but let me tell you, the city would stop putting death notices in the daily bulletin to save money if they could, what makes you think they want to use department vehicles and on duty personnel to perform escorts? If you asked the higher ups, the answer would be a flat out NO WE DON'T DO ESCORTS AND HAVENT FOR ABOUT 15 YEARS... any one, other than the ones who are orders from headquarters should consider themselves lucky to get an escort.

How do you get 200 days of medical time ia a year,in a light duty unit, then go full-duty in order to get special enjoyment. Then you get pissed when Lucy-Moy Duh inds out your game and sends you back to your full duty unit. Oh well you hit the medical and lo and behold the transfer order has you now assigned to the light duty unit. If someone in this "unit" can show anyone her "8" hr assignment I'll give them a grand. The brillant Debra Kirby can't seem to figure it out. Maybe with some help from P. Fitgerald she will get it. Last time I looked ghost payrolling is can get your ass looked up.Any copper who is being denined special because of his medcical time your greivance will be based on star# 19935. Call me, Sgt. Gaynor

You know what, then we should have a 5 or 10 man unit to handle escorts. If daley has a 12 man security unit and a car from 001 in front of his house and had a car sit on his moms house for 25 years, whats the big deal. The bottom line is that this guys uncle was a p.o. If this dead guy was a commander(whom of which are only glorified supervisors),or one of garrity's buddies, he would have had an escort.
