Good Point

From the comments section:
  • Tax hike for the schools. Just look inside their dumpsters and see all your tax dollars at work.... all new books, work books, work sheets and school supplies (brand new, never used) in the trash. Open your eyes TAXPAYERS.
This isn't the first time we've heard this complaint. We've talked to people who work in the schools (cops, teachers, engineers) and they tell stories of storage rooms full of textbooks still wrapped in plastic, brand new laptops and desktop computers still in the factory boxes, literally TONS of supplies to equip hundreds of class rooms, squirreled away as if for a nuclear emergency.

Why can't some media types do an actual expose on some of the millions (billions?) that are wasted by the monster that is the CPS? Maybe make the effort to look out for the citizens in light of the recent soap opera playing out in Springfield which will no doubt result in the taxpayers getting the shaft again. How about they send some of their minions over to dig around in the dumpsters and find out what we already know. Maybe become the public watchdog instead of the mayor's lapdog?

My wife is a principal at a CPS school. This summer she got a call to go to one of the Englewood schools that was closed but will re-open as some kind of new BS named academy, in its place.

Point is, she goes there because they (CPS) were giving away all sorts of stuff away to other schools. Things like "old" computers, unopend books (no kidding in Englewood) teaching aids, chairs, desk, tables, and the like, etc, etc, etc.

When this stuff happens (school changes to an academy) they (the new academy) get ALL brand new stuff, chairs, desks, books, computers, teaching aids, EVERYTHING.

That is a HUGE waste of our tax money right there - boxes of unopened books, yet you have to give them away, so you can get new books to be used in their place.

WTF?!?

We should demand the school voucher system be implemented in Illinois. You choose where to send your children and it is paid through a state voucher, this opens the door to parochial schooling.

Look at your next property tax bill,75% goes to the Chicago Board of Education. Unfortuantely, something I and most thinking citizens will never utilize.

We pay for other children to go to school and then we pay for private school tuition too.

Did anyone catch the fact that the Mayor is pushing forth legislation making school teacher strikes illegal in Illinois?

State may limit teachers' ability to strike
CPS | Plan would require 'fact-finding,' independent recommendation first

July 24, 2007

Chicago is one of just a handful of large urban school districts that allows its teachers to strike, and a movement is afoot to change that.
Teachers and school officials are in talks now; the contract expired June 30. Both sides say little progress has been made, fueling fears about a strike as the new school year approaches.

A proposal is making the rounds in Springfield to make it harder for Chicago teachers to vote to strike. Now, a deadlocked Chicago Teachers Union could strike after it has tried mediation and given school officials a 10-day notice.

CPS teachers are underpaid in comparison to neighboring school districts. Where are all of our tax dollars going?

Higher Taxes No Problem

This little trick should ensure nice campaign contributions to the Toddler's War Chest.

Failure to read fine print zings county for $330K
LATE FEE | Contract's 15-day provision 'absolutely outrageous'

July 23, 2007

It's not uncommon for Cook County contractors to go weeks -- even months -- without being paid for work done for county government.
So it was a bit of a surprise when officials recently learned that a $276 million hospital contract included fine print allowing a firm to collect a hefty fee if the county failed to pay its bill within 15 days.

In just five months, that cost county taxpayers more than $330,000, and county officials admit it's a requirement they never could meet.

The Dumbing Down of America Continues.

Foreign students laugh at the laxness of our institutions of higher learning. Graduate studies are easier in America than undergrad work in foreign countries.

Communist China is producing almost 100 engineers to our 1. The future is bleak for our country, unless we get back to the basics or reading, riting and rithmetic. (3 R's)

Outcome Based Education is a farce. Political correctness has no place in an institution of academia.

Thought expression means little, if you can not do it in a literate manner with correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc.

How are college athletes graduating from prestigious universities and reading at third grade levels?

Many Americans are incapable of performing the most rudimentary arithmetic without the aid of a calculator. Ever watch some of the people you work with attempt to figure out what the tip is?

Chicago's answer to this CRISIS is to throw more money at the problem,in the vain hope that will solve it. Politicians can then regurgitate the number of dollars they allocated, omitting how they raised taxes to get them.

Chicago's answer to the uneducated test takers, race norming test scores, administering tests multiple times while passing the answers to the right people, lowering entrance exam standards to those of third grade levels, losing hundreds of tests to avoid uproar in certain communities.

Yes,this country is truly doomed.

More Taxes Coming to Chicagoans According to Sneed:

Fueling CTA The taxman cometh. . .

$$$$: A city initiative involving a new real estate transfer tax is being floated by legislative leaders and transit officials.
• Translation: The transfer tax, which has been extremely lucrative for the city, would be increased to create a needed blood bank for the ailing Chicago Transit Authority.

• $$$$: The Chicago City Council has already passed legislation for a transfer tax, but a new state law may be needed to enable the city to pass new transfer tax legislation.

These Morons Just Don't Get It Yet.

Raising taxes on counsumables only prompts people to shop online or out of state. Cook County lost revenue by raising cigarette taxes; everyone just went to Indiana,DuPage,Lake,Will or Kane Counties.

Democrats in Senate seek budget deal

SPRINGFIELD - The state's cigarette tax would increase by 75 cents under a measure Senate Democrats are pushing as Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the General Assembly struggle to find a way out of the overtime standoff that enters a record 55th day on Wednesday.

It's about time, elected officials are finally defending the rights of their constituents. BP wants to poison our drinking water by dumping 6,500 pounds of toxic waste into Lake Michigan. The City of Chicago needs to stop buying fuel from BP. Don't buy BP gasoline,BOYCOTT BP.

WASHINGTON — Executives from the oil company BP hit a bipartisan buzz saw on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, as Illinois lawmakers rebuked them in a private meeting and the House prepared to condemn BP's plans for increasing the dumping of pollutants into Lake Michigan
Republicans and Democrats from Illinois warned throughout the day that BP would lose any fight over Great Lakes pollution and that the company was risking an environmentally friendly image it promotes heavily in advertising campaigns.
BP now will be allowed to dump an average of 1,584 pounds of ammonia and 4,925 pounds of suspended solids into the lake daily.

The additional solids, tiny sludge particles that escape water treatment filters, are the maximum allowed under federal guidelines.

Ammonia promotes algae blooms that can kill fish, while suspended solids contain heavy metals such as lead, nickel and vanadium.

In advertisements and e-mails published during the past two weeks, BP has insisted the treated water it pumps into the lake is largely free of toxic waste. Federal records, though, show the refinery already is one of the largest sources of industrial pollution pumped directly into Lake Michigan.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich joined the list of angry politicians Tuesday with a statement threatening to sue Indiana in federal court if the permit isn't reworked.

Watchdog for county corruption OKd
INSPECTOR GENERAL | But Stroger must find money for it

A more powerful, independent inspector general was approved Tuesday to root out corruption in all Cook County government offices.
But a County Board committee approved the establishment of such an office against the advice of the state's attorney and without any money to actually make it happen.

We should demand the school voucher system be implemented in Illinois.

Can somebody give me a quick run down on this voucher system?? Is it as simple as just picking a school and paying for it with a voucher? What if you do not have kids? Are your taxes still funded for schools?? Is there anyway for these crooks here in Chicago to find a way around the system and get more money or political gain from a voucher system??

WASHINGTON - Airport security officers around the nation have been alerted by federal officials to look out for terrorists practicing to carry explosive components onto aircraft, based on four curious seizures at airports since last September.

The unclassified alert was distributed on July 20 by the Transportation Security Administration to federal air marshals, its own transportation security officers and other law enforcement agencies.

The seizures at airports in San Diego, Milwaukee, Houston and Baltimore included "wires, switches, pipes or tubes, cell phone components and dense clay-like substances," including block cheese, the bulletin said. "The unusual nature and increase in number of these improvised items raise concern."

Security officers were urged to keep an eye out for "ordinary items that look like improvised explosive device components."

It is the end of the world as we know it:

Europe bakes in summer heatwave as Britain floods

The mercury is tipped to hit 40C/105F in Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia, but temperatures have eased slightly in many areas affected by the heat.

Greece's electricity grid is close to breaking point as demand soars and searing temperatures evaporate rivers used to create hydro-electric power. Blackouts and power outages have stricken many areas throughout Greece and South-eastern Europe.

Up to 500 people have died in the heat in Hungary and 30 in Romania.

Britain has been hit by the worst flooding in hundreds of years surpassing the 1947 flooding benchmark. Five inches of rain hammered London on Saturday pushing the swollen River Thames to bursting.

About 350,000 people in Gloucestershire without tap water are getting supplies, but could be cut off for up to 14 days.

The flooding of June and July is expected to cost the insurance industry at least £2bn, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said. Over $4 billion USC in damages so far.

Crop damage estimates are unavailable but are expected to measure very significant loses.

Chicago is so ripe for a tax revolution it is scary.

Seems like the city is ignoring the lessons of the prohibition era as well.

Overly taxed goods / unlawful goods are all available in nearby states /& locals.

They shall arrive here for the right price.

Taxing IS a sly issue as well.
Middle class and home owners, many forced to live in this city by laws of employment, are forced and overseen to pay these outrageous taxes.

Pullman would be proud of Dickie.
When are the dick bucks due to be printed as script for wages?
