Mette Speaks

  • "I've never been attacked before and not been afforded the right to defend myself," Mette said.

Two days ago, Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass called it, "An Iowa criminal case that smells of a thousand hogs."

"I know I've got to do the time," Mette said. "My biggest consoling factor is that even if I do end up going to prison, I still know that I didn't do anything wrong that night."
Go read the whole thing. Then scroll down and read the past few days of our postings for where to write to in order to express your outrage and some steps you can take.

When are we protesting! Keep going! This is starting to get attention like it deserves! The Governors house or 35th street? Let's go.

Iowa's largest newspaper, the DesMoines Register in the state capitol has also picked up the story with reader comments in favor of Mette.

Go to: www.DesMoinesRegister.com for "Assault case against officer draws fire"

For more entries, GOOGLE "Michael Mette" and Dubuque. If the comments in the DesMoines Register and Dubuque's Telegraph Herald are representative, most Iowans are sympathetic to Officer Mette.

By their silence, the shameless, spineless dirtbags are hanging this innocent kid out to dry.

Hey SCC,
Please stop posting all the idiots that want to fuck with the Iowa Coppers and Citizens. They are who we need to get thhis wrong righted. Do you really think that the Mayor,Chief Judge, Governor, or any other Pols in Iowa give a rats ass what a bunch of "Thug Chicago Police" think. Yes, I am CPD, but that is apparently how we are viewed everywhere after the frigging Abate fiasco.
They care only if their constituants care. There will be very little if any coverage on the news or print media in Iowa with only us or Bill O'Reilly complaining about it. We need the people of Iowa and the Law Enforcement and elected officials to get behind this cause, because this is an assinine ruling that threatens thewelfare of all of their citizens, not just Mette. They could probably care less, unless it endangers their freedom. How about getting the law declared unconstitutional (maybe 4th Amendment violation -right to be secure in your person getting arrested for protecting oneself seems like an unreasonable seizure, or for vagueness must attempt to flee, etc...) As long as Mette is out on bond during the entire appeal process (no jail time) that would be a start and the case would eventually get thrown out. The only defense he seems to have a shot at right now is inefective counsel. Whatevr the plan, we need the poeple and the police from Iowa to take a stand. Without them, we're peeing up a rope....

Did a little investigative digging and found some of the Gothard family clout. Back in 2004, Daddy donated to the campaign of Larry "Buck" Koos who is now a Jackson County Iowa Supervisor.
http://iecdb.iowa.gov/reports/county/JACKSON/County_Candidate/Koos_Larry/2004-10-19.pdf

Bellvue, where the Gothards reside, is in Jackson County. Among the many "services" County supervisors provide; Approving budgets, administering oaths, and filling elected official vacancies.Maybe approving contracts to trucking companies? Now if we can just find the connection between "Buck" and Judge Ackley, I'll bet we'll better understand her ruling. Jackson County borders Dubuque to the South.

Send $50.00 to the defense fund, and please keep in mind that beyond your regular partner out there(I've been fortunate to have a stand up partner for 14 years) everyone else, especially the supe and the rest of the brASS(holes) down at 35th St. and most likely your D/C, unless you have pictures of them with a she-male, will let you twist in the wind before they open their mouths in support of you. When they accept the white shirt, there is a small box in the superintendant's office with a sign that reads "REMOVE AND INSERT BALLS HERE". Although there are exceptions to this rule, they are few and far between.

I agree with 02:13 am,it's not the Iowa citizens or police at fault here, it's the judge and the prosecuter.Just like when we had a problem with Wisconsin(did that ever end)and I for one officer won't be doing anything to target Iowans. The best thing we can do is support Mike Mette and stop the nonsence.I must say that I am ashamed of our own department on this, they (the brass) threw him under the bus without just cause but I should have expected as much. This could be any one of us non-connected officers.

I haven't been a liberal since my college days years ago. 25years on this job has been a good wake up call. I am doing everything I can to help right this terrible wrong. I am writing letters and sending e mails to people here and in Iowa. Also, I am even praying that Officer Mette is eventually acquitted of this crime, and gets this job back if that is what he wants. (Yes I believe in a Supreme Being, but that is a topic for another time.) Maybe this will be a good wake up call for many of us, who think that we as police officers, proscuters and other representatives of the criminal justice system can do no wrong. This is a perfect example of how innocent people can and do get hooked up.

02:13Hrs has got it right. The good people of Iowa are not the problem it is the political system of corrupt judges and states attorneys who are beholding to politicians and big money people who own them. Sounds familiar doesn't it?

This is insane! If the story is what it is, Mette left the party and was assaulted at least two times by this jack ass before he hit him one good time. Where are the charges against this idiot for consumption of alcohol by a minor, some charges for serving to minors, and of course the assault of Mette? He should have been locked up not Mette. Mette hit him good, but Gothard was the aggressor and broke the law, not Mette. Also if he knew Mette was a copper that should be a felony for him.
What were those Iowa coppers thinking Locking up a fellow brother who was in the right? Looks like WI no longer has the A-Hole cops!
How many times how you got stuck covering your ass and locking some fool up for pushing someone who wants to sign complaints? Its a BS arrest but sometimes you have to do it. Gothard whould have been locked up.
And how can he be suspended for this BS? Before this case went to court we should have been out there helping our brother out.
I am a young copper and if this is the BS backup I am going to have to deal with I hope I start meeting some very important people who can get me out of trouble because thats the only way out these days. Gone are the days when justice prevails, apparently.

Sent to M.D. Kittle at the Telegraph Herald

Thank you for your article on the prosecutor. It appeared to me you were fairer in this last article. I do have some questions about this prosecutor's ethics. There is not a complaint issued, a judge's decision or witness statement that indicates Officer Mette did anything except deliver one punch.

Assistant County Attorney Timothy Gallagher said Gothard's injuries were life threatening. He said Gothard was bleeding from the face and the head and had numerous other bruises that were more consistent with being knocked down and kicked.

"He was a police officer who ostensibly is trained how to handle drunken individuals, how to subdue a drunk without beating him senseless," Gallagher said.

Gallagher seems to be adding requirements that don't appear in the Iowa law!

This is a direct quote from another Iowa newspaper that was rather sympathetic to our cause. I just thought you might want to think about that.

This is very irresponsible of him and rather "Mike Nifongish".

I am a little curious if you have actually read the Judge's decision. If you do, it would be interesting to poll your readers and police officers and pose the question "What would you have done?"

Why is it that the so called prosecutor Gallagher continues, in his newpaper interview, to prosecute Mike Mette. Sounds like sour grapes from someone who has been exposed for the farce he is in a kangaroo court. Here's a question for a lawyer out there: Let's say that Mike Mette gets a full pardon from the Iowa Governor. Does that automatically preclude the drunk young man from filing a civil suit (ie Mike received a pardon, so does that end all legal action?). I'm not good with civil law at all. Even if he finally beats this on the criminal side, with the drunk guy's juice, we may have to keep up the fundraising for a while for civil suits......I know, first things first, let's keep it up, and keep him out of jail.

Pardons only apply to criminal wrongdoing. While a pardon can "erase" a crime committed by the one receiving the pardon, it cannot erase the "injury" suffered by the plaintiff in a civil suit. As such, he would still be civily liable despite having been pardoned.

"Yes Me the Lousy Cop"

Well Mr. Citizen, I guess you have me figured out. I seem to fit neatly into the category you place me in. I'm stereotyped, characterized, standardized, classified, grouped, and always typical. I'm the "lousy cop." Unfortunately, the reverse isn't true. I can never figure you out.

From birth you teach your children that I am the bogeyman, and then you're shocked when they identify me with my traditional enemy, the criminal. You accuse me of coddling juveniles, until I catch your kid doing something. You may take an hour for lunch, and have several coffee breaks each day, but point me out as a loafer if you see me having just one cup.

You pride yourself on your polished manners, but think nothing of interrupting my meals at noon with your troubles. You raise hell about the guy who cuts you off in traffic, but let me catch you doing the same thing and I'm picking on you. You know all the traffic laws, but never got a single ticket you deserved. You shout "foul" if you observe me driving fast enroute to an emergency call, but literally raise hell if I take more than ten seconds responding to your call!!!

You call it "part of the job" if someone strikes me, but it's "police brutality" if I strike back. You wouldn't think of telling your dentist how to pull a badly decayed tooth, or your doctor how to take out your appendix, but you are always willing to give me a few pointers on law enforcement. You talk to me in a manner and use language that would assure a bloody nose from anyone else, but you expect me to stand and take it without batting an eye.

You cry, "Something has to be done about all the crime!" but you can't be bothered with getting involved.

You've got no use for me at all, but, of course, it's OK if I change a tire for your wife, or deliver your baby in the back seat of my patrol car on the way to the hospital, or save your son's life with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, or work many hours over-time to find your lost daughter.

So Mr. Citizen, you stand there on your soapbox and rant and rave about the way I do my job, calling me every name in the book, but never stop a minute to think that your property, your family, or maybe your life might depend on one thing, ME, or one if my buddies.

Hey!
And wasting no time this Shithole Department & Its Brass have cut the guy loose.(Surprising Isnt It?)In the meantime, Im sure Mike is or will be looking for SOME GOOD JOB opportunities. Im sure there are some people out here with a reference or two for the guy.

THey had to, he was convicted of a felony, instead of spewing shit on here, learn theacts, read the municipal code and our G.O's and you might know something. He will defintiely win on appeal, as he should, and then he will get back on with back pay etc.

Iowa state law section 704.3 states " A person is justified in the use of reasonable force when the person reasonably believes that such force is necesary to defend oneself or another from any immeinent use of unlawful force". After walking away with the goof following, who then strikes Mike, Mike is clearly right. Don't they know their own law out there ?

Dear 09:57 aka AssFuck,
In regards to your quoting of the G.O.s & municipal code. You sir, are a complete stroke! Who comes on the site and starts quoting G.O's when people are drumming support for a jammed up copper? Only so much as a company man/bitch/you with his face so far up a whiteshirts ass, you could taste his breakfast.
Im quite well aware of the facts, sir. Are you? Did your crystal ball tell you all about "back pay" and his "win" on appeal? Thats just what Im sure hes really fucking concerned about. God forbid that maybe he has an imminent threat of going to prison, while his appeal gets underway?
My reference to cutting him loose was based more on a loose interpretation of having no testicular fortitude to say "anything" at all on his behalf. If we as coppers & friends didn't get on this bandwagon of disgrace & draw national attention to it. Your beloved department & FOP would be perfectly content to stand by the wayside, and let him twist in the wind.
Now, unless you can get us the lotto numbers with your crystal ball, take it. Shove it up your ass with your general orders, & municipal code, and crawl back under the bridge you came from trollboy. AND keep working on those CHEVRONS if you dont have them already!! We are all sure you are or will be a great boss. Tool...
