More Rules = More Failure

An interesting letter in the comments section:
  • An open letter to the Mayor, Governor and state representatives.

    Dear Sirs,

With the recent shootings in the city and such atrocities such as Virginia Tech, the gun debate will perpetuate. Both supporters and opponents of tougher gun laws will undoubtedly present facts and statistics supporting their position. However there is just one fact, just one statistic that no one can refute: gun laws do not stop shootings.

I am a supporter of gun laws and regulation, and believe current laws were designed with the safety and future of our society in mind, but it is painfully obvious that they do not work. One can only look to England for the result of banning all guns, with little impact on crime. The examples are numerous on both sides, but point to the same conclusion: there is no gun law that prevents criminals from possessing guns, and these laws only serve to disarm the innocent. One could also look at the current state of illicit drug abuse and know that strict laws have no effect. Drugs are brought into this country through unprotected sections of our own borders, and so would guns.

Virginia Tech is a gun free zone, but it did not stop Cho Seung-Hui from killing 32 fellow students. How many lives could have been saved if just one of those students was carrying a firearm that day? In 2002, two armed students at Appalachian State University subdued a fellow student who had already killed 3 others. How many deaths were prevented that day, how many were saved because someone was carrying a gun should be the question you ask yourselves. There is no law, and there is nothing that could be said or done to stop someone who is intent on killing people, nothing short of the victims defending themselves. No one wants criminals or mentally ill to have guns, but there is nothing that can stop them, so why take away the ability to defend oneself?

Criminals are just that, criminals. By definition they do not obey laws, and certainly do not obey gun laws. Not to mention what insane people are capable of. I can pick up the news paper on any given day and read of a shooting, and in a city where gun possession is nearly impossible. But this impossibility only exists for the law-abiding citizens of this city who are left defenseless. Criminals are allowed to poison their neighborhoods with drugs, possess guns, and endanger everyone around them with their violence. Criminals break the law with impunity while productive members of society are paying for their crimes, often with their lives.

I am writing to inform you of my support for HB1304, and asking you for your support in allowing honest, respectable members of society a fighting chance to defend themselves and their families. Please join the other 48 states that honor a citizen’s right to keep and bear arms. Allow me to protect myself and my family.

Banning guns only ensures that criminals have them, and that victims stay helpless.

Letters such as this one, along with the recent court ruling in Washington, DC, make me think that there really is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Gun laws only affect the law abiding citizens. Bad guys don't obey laws. Simple as that.
Hopefully, the working coppers can use their discretion when they come upon a law abiding citizen who happens to be armed, instead of immediately writing him for UUW. I have my fingers crossed that the Supreme Court will hear the DC case and then rule that gun laws are unconstitutional, as they should be.

Why do we keep promoting a change in the city's gun laws. How about encouraging people to leave this city. People, you are governed by crooks, police morale is the lowest, and crime is going up, irregardless of what stats say. Save your family and leave the city.

If you read the real history of gun control, you will learn that there have only been two reasons for the control and banning of firearms;
One: Criminald paid off legislators to protect themselves from armed citizens.

Two: Politicians feared assassination.

These are the only real reasons the anti-gunners started. It started at the turn of the last century. The worst anti gun criminal was FDR. He was the one who started the anti gun movement rolling.

The murders of JFK, MLK, and RFK- no great losses there- started the modern anti gun movement.

The whole purpose of the Second Ammendment to the Constitution was to protect the individual from the abuses of Government.

Maybe if people read history theywould really learn something.

Just so everyone knows, this was actually a draft I was writing to send to our state reps.

You can and should read about HB1304 here. Please contact your representatives.

Thank you SCC for putting this up on the front page. At least I know the letter is getting more exposure than it would have sitting in the bottom of Obama's garbage can.

I don't think this letter, however well written, will have any effect on the persons listed. They have had their minds made up long ago and I am sure that each of the persons listed owns a firearm or two but that's not the point. The point is that they are hypocrites. We have all heard the politicians on the news "You will have the wild west, there will be shootings over traffic accidents", or the ever popular "It won't work here".I ask you, do we not already have the wild west and shootings over accidents? And just WHY won't it work here? Because they (Your elected politicians) don't want it to work here.Carry laws work everywhere they have been implemented.Perhaps when some of you liberals are victims of a violent criminal you may understand.

Do Aldermen who carry concealed have to undergo training? Do they have to re-qualify every year? Has any of their registrations lapsed? Maybe our glorious and brave CAGE unit can answer

From a previous post:

"So are we not getting new wagons anymore?"

***********************

So is this true? We Really DO NOT need large squadrols as they are. Just mid-sized cargo vans (Chevy Express/Ford E-Series) that most other cities use.

I imagine since the squadrols are custom made in Chicago, some politians are making money on them also.

Agreed with 03:01 am.

Anti-gunners are convinced (for whatever reason) that guns are evil and they'll do whatever they can to get them out of the hands of the citizens.

They won't listen to facts/reason, so writing letters of that kind amounts to pissing in the wind...

The individual is responsible for his/her own safety, it's not the Govt's responsibility to protect you. If you live in an area of repressive gun laws, leave! there are plenty of other states where the rights of gun-owners are respected.

Off topic, but i think very relevant and why a lot of cops end up in a trick bag:

The big problem is that felony review (state's attorney's office) plays judge and jury with approving our charges leaving us in a position that makes us feel like we have to have an airtight case to even call them.
Instead of arresting the offender and charging him for say uuw but you had to go back and pick up the gun he tossed b/c you were chasing the a-hole, they want you to lie and say you stopped the chase, picked up the gun then continued chasing, otherwise they'll never approve the charges. Like in the span of a minute someone else might have run by and tossed the same kind of gun in the same place, get real. They should not be judging that, that's for the jury to decide. I think that the fel review is the major prob here and that's why paper gets written certain ways. Just to make sure the charges are approved. The change needs to start there.
We know what constitutes a felony, let us charge them with it and states attorney try the case as it shold be. felony review quit being so lazy and picking and choosing only the slam dunk cases to try.

That's exactly what they needed on the Virginia Tech campus that day: not just one idiot shooting, but a whole bunch, creating a web of crossfire that would have likely killed far more innocent people. Even in the military, with highly trained marksmen, soldiers get killed by "friendly" fire. The more guns we allow, the easier we make it to get them, the more people will shoot them, and the more people will die. Police are highly trained shooters, yet according to the IACP, 42 to 82 percent of rounds fired in police shootings miss their mark.

Drop the fantasy that criminals are logical and will stop being criminals if they think people are armed. They're stupid, that's why they're criminals. We don't need more stupid people with guns, and if guns weren't so cheap and easy to get -- if this society stopped worshiping this deadly weapon, we could isolate the manufacturers and keep gunfire deaths down. We're either going to progess into a modern industrialized society with respect for the law and a hatred of violence, or we'll revert back to the Wild West, which I suspect wasn't nearly as romantic and charming as it's made out to be.

To those of you that think this is a waste of time:

That's exactly why I write these letters. They want you discouraged; they want you to give up. I will not, and all it costs me is a little of my time. No, this letter will not amount to anything, but that doesn't mean it is a waste of time. There are more people that think the way I do than most liberals would like to admit. 2 states out of 50 that allow law-abiding citizens to carry makes a strong statement. I will not give up a fight that I believe in, and in despite being surrounded by liberal democrats that only want to take more of my rights and money away, and deny me my constitutional rights.

To those of you who are history professors:

Yes, the right to bear arms is to fight an oppressive government and to form a militia. However, what the second amendment does not mention is what conditions people may arm themselves. That is an ongoing interpretation of the amendment, and hopefully when it reaches the supreme court they will side with the people. It's funny how liberals misinterpret the constitution to fit their needs. I would like to see where it exactly says, "separation of church and state". Of course you won't find it because that's an interpretation. What it does say is there will be no government funded churches. But liberals and the ACLU gladly use that to change our pledge of allegiance and take Christians right to prayer away from them.

You can give me a history lesson the minute liberals stop be hypocrites.

To those of you that think allowing people to carry weapons will cause more problems:

Look at the facts and statistics from the states that allow concealed-carry. And when you see that more guns DO NOT equal more death and violence, realize that some of us actually want to have a fighting chance against the bad guys. You are correct: there is nothing that can be done to change a criminal's mind, but why take away the means to protect myself and family against them? If myself or my family is threatened with deadly force I would kill that person without a second thought. Do you think that criminals take into consideration the sanctity of life when they pull out a gun on their victims? Do you think they rationalize anything in the manner you and I do? Don't be so naive. Go spend some time with real criminals like the POs and lockup keepers and then you can tell me what criminals do and think. You are right though, there is nothing that can be done to change a criminal, but that's what makes him dangerous. They don't care about you, or laws, jail, or your family, your 401k and your summer home in upper state New York, and they certainly have nothing to lose; they would rather shoot you in the head and take your wallet than put a smile on their face and ask for help. Do you know how I know that? Because I was told that by a prisoner.

Hmm... my life or his? Hard choice.

If you knew what I know, you'd know police are not scared, (maybe a little) but they'd better be smart, aware, expect the worst, hope for the best and not be surprised by anything in between.

Suppose terrorists strike, what will you defend yourself with, strong language?
