What a Modern Department!

Ridiculous (from the comments):
  • OFF TOPIC--BUT IMPORTANT.

At approximately 2100 hrs tonite (19Sep)a traffic stop for a 3200 unit went wrong up on 024. A gun was pulled by a driver, the copper busted a cap at the driver who then fled into Warren Park.

An 024 Sergeant requested the helicopter to aid in the search and light up the park.

Two minutes later, the Zone 11 dispatcher stated "The helicopter is off tonight"

What is the use of a helo if they have the day off?

How many people are in the unit? Obviously not enough to man the aircraft 24/7/365. Don't they have people on call?

I don't expect the media to report on [this], maybe Kass will.

Copper is ok, that is all that really matters,,,even though shithead probably got away.
As we understand part of the problem, Harry "the Hat" Holm won't let anyone else fly the bird. No one, and we mean no one, gets any stick time at all. One of the pilots is rumored to have gotten fed up and left the Unit because of Harry's nonsense.

Are we or are we not supposed to be one of the most "technologically advanced" Departments on the face of the earth, but we can't keep a helicopter in the air for more than three hours a day, and not even seven days a week? How many millions are going to be poured into this boondoggle? Either staff the damn unit appropriately so it can be used or disband it and get us a few cars and the bodies to man it.

A former Carpentersville woman filed a $30 million federal lawsuit Thursday, alleging that anti-immigrant sentiment in the village contributed to paramedics' failure to take her son to the hospital, causing him permanent brain damage.

Ted Karavidas, a lawyer for Gloria Lopez, said "virulent anti-immigrant and anti-Hispanic rhetoric" in the northwestern suburb led to an atmosphere where paramedics denied care for the boy, violating his civil rights.

The Sgts cars that were down were given out to other cars that didn't have pool vehicles. The caps cars were being used as well. We had nothing, and thats even with a couple rapids down due to manpower and they still couldn't find cars for us. Ridiculous, the second largest police department in the country, and no cars, no pdts, radios that work for 4 hours, etc. Bring on the Olympics!

I know a bit about Carpentersville; belive me, it is not Bush's fault. That town has been steadily declining for a few decades now. When you allow a neighborhood that was built to house vietnam vets to turn into miles of houses occupied by illegals, it is NOT the preident's fault. Bush was pounding brewskies in college while Carpentersville was falling apart. C'ville is trying to curb the illegal problem, but it is too little too late.

As far as the lawsuit is concerned, all it takes is for lawmakers to curb the ability of illegals to file suit in the US, especially against the US; in essence, when you go to file suit, you have to show that you are a legal member of society. Only problem is that this would be highly unpopular with hispanic voters. Again NOT the president's fault. Actually, a lot or current problems are allowed to fester because 1.LEGAL CONSERVATIVE RESIDENTS DO NOT V O T E. EVERY YEAR I AM AMAZED AT HOW MANY OF US DO NOT VOTE. And 2. Conservatives do not picket. I have yet to see a group of businessmen or working conservatives march agianst the rediculous state of things. It's always the liberal's stirring things up. That's my 2 cents, which are worth about 1.7 cents in europe.

SCC that sorry is just sad! a helicopter could have found that asshole in Warren Park in a few minutes.

We should have at the very least 3 helicopters patrolling the city at any given time. 1 patroling north/northwest side, 1 patroling south/southwest side and 1 patroling up and down the lakefront and lakefront districts. I would help the patrol division immensely, but then again who cares about them?

A city and a police department of this size should have a helicopter unit that is up and manned 24/7. If run properly, it could be a tremendous asset. Much smaller cities and departments have helicopters that are in the air all of the time. We should too. And no, I am not in the unit, nor do I aspire to be.

I work in 8th. Recently I had an elderly lady's little poodle (the dog is also on medicine for diabetes and a heart condition) get out of her yard and run into the nearby wooded area on the far west end. I called for Air One to help locate it with it's infrared camera. Would you believe some knuckle head Sgt scolded my ass over the radio for calling for it. What is it there for if we can't use it. This lady was like 90 years old, only spoke polish and was about to drop dead of a heart attack on the lost of her long time companion and best friend. So after I got off work I went to the woods on my own and 9 hours later I found it. Sometimes police work is more than just catching criminals, its about helping people. The only thing I am worried about is West Nile Virus, I got probably well over 100 bug bites which could of been avoided if the damn helicopter just came out.

Part of the problem here is the safety of those in the helicopter.. its important that all the pilots get hours on the particular bird and are familiar with its operation. Mistakes in a helicoptor more than likely result in death, usually to the officers on the bird. Not to mention the millions of dollars of equipment that is expended with a fairly minor mistake. This is a fledgling unit, manpower isn't at optimum. People who think it isn't being done right should go on out there, I would like to see any of them try to fly a helicopter. Personal ambivalance about the people in the unit isn't gonna do anyone any good. There really aren't enough people in the unit right now to fly both birds at the same time, nor do I think that safety should be ignored at any time. Also, the helicopter unit does have days off, it can be called out. If you or your supervisor wants the off duty guys tko be called in, you should request it. I think that once the unit is really running 7 days a week (probably will take a few more months to get there) you will see more immediate availability. Also, it does take time, in the form of flight hours to be checked out on a bird, to the extent of flying missions which can be quite stressful.
There are other factors too, including weather. Also, the helo can't be in two places at the same time. Give the unit a chance, it will be a good thing. And, just because one person has only seen it up a few times, doesn't mean it hasn't been up there, it has.

AND THE SAME RESPONSE BY THE ZONE, "THE HELO IS NOT AVAILABLE" WELL I GUESS SOME PHONE CALLS WERE MADE, AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN THERE WAS A 45MIN ETA. 45 MINUTES FOR A COPPER SHOT!!!

THOSE THINGS SHOULD BE UP AT ALL TIMES. IF THE POOL OF CPD ABLE TO FLY IS SO SMALL, THEN HIRE CIVILLIANS TO FLY WITH PO'S ON BOARD. IF YOUR GOING TO HAVE IT, USE IT. OTHERWISE SCRAP IT FOR SOME MORE CROWN VICS AND NOT SOME FRUITY CONCEPT POLICE VEHILE.

Let me say that I'm a civilian and reading this blog is scary. Evidently, the Peter Principal is alive and well in the Chicago Police Department. Unfortunately I'm not surprised that rank and file officers face the same bullshit everybody everywhere faces everyday in terms of asshole bosses and political co-workers. The difference is that your job can be a matter of life and death (yours or mine) and you would THINK that certain types of employment or professions would be exempt from the standard and incessant bullshit that occurs pretty much everywhere else simply because it should be.

This blog is the best example of democracy in action that I've ever seen. I'm glad I lived long enough to see a technology develop that actually supports the human condition by giving a voice to the integrity and dedication that is silenced and/or feared by the useless assholes you have to deal with in order to do a job you were called to do and love despite everything you have to put up with.

Ok, now what is with this Seiser? Is he a well-liked all around great guy or some poor stupid bastard that fucks everything up?

Years ago, at a stand-up roll call in the 008th District, Harry the Hat was getting on an old-timer about his uniform appearance. The KMA member looked down at Harry (doesn't everybody?) and said, "Is it true that you had to stand on a stack of $100 bills to pass the height requirement to get on this job?"

One if the funniest things I saw in my 31 years on the job.

9/21/2007 02:08:00 AM

I have no idea who Harry "The Hat" is but that was some funny shit! You rock!

9/21/2007 11:54:00 PM I am sure this is not the first time this has happened to you but you are wrong! B.R. has a pilot license with two ratings on it, single engine land and rotorcraft helicopter rating. Not one dime of this training was paid for by the city.

You don't know what you are talking about. When Harry put the car in the lake, he was a Sergerant in Mass Transit. It was Midnights, and he fell asleep with the car in gear, took his foot off of the brake and the car, with Harry in it went into the lake near the planetarium. Fortuantely the only thing that was hurt was Harry's pride. He got the nick name the "hat" when one of the fire department SCUBA divers came walking out of the lake with Harry's sergeant hat on his head. That picture made the front page of the Sun Times. I know, I was there.

Sell the helicopter and get some more crown vics on the street. That thing is useless if it is not going to be up 24/7.

9/21/2007 10:08:00 PM

Give it a chance already, you might find it useful once the unit is fully operational.
You are so negative, how about posting something positive?

If it's not fully operational, why make it a unit? Run the unit like it is supposed to be run. Not half ass, like everything in this city.

What are you talking about? County doesn't pick up half the tab, although they do pay for some hours and provide the TFO's.
Second, Harry H IS the chief pilot, 3rd, you are right the pilots should be getting more pay, flying is extremely high risk.

9/21/2007 09:52:00 PM

im waiting for that damn thing to fly i want to take out a $ 1,000,000.00 life insurance policy out on a pilot. thats my pay day

There is a lot of stuff on here about the qualifications that this person or that person does or does not possess......Go to faa.gov and under "airman certification" you can enter the person's name and see exactly what qualifications they do or do not have!!! Enquiring minds should go there.

You gotta start somewhere... I am sure you can imagine, if you put your mind to it, the task of getting it up and running from nothing. It is one thing to step into a unit and run it, or keep it going, it is quite another to actually get something started, then get it up to where you want it to be.

Well, the mayor can use it as he sees fit, although the $ supporting it requires certain types of missions to be run with it, not all of which are answering calls, .

I bet you're one of the same 008th Dist. coppers who complains about "no police service" on the west end of 008! And you say you're CONCERNED about getting west nile? I'm concerned that there isn't enough cement in Chicago to fill the void in your empty head! What an ASSHOLE!!!! no wonder things are so fucked up in 008...all the real police are searching for lost pooches in the woods!!! Funniest, dumbest shit I've ever seen posted here EVER!!! Its amazing how people can criticize what they do not understand. First of all this is not just a Chicago Police Helicopter, it is a Cook County Helicopter. The County owns 25% of the helicopter. That means that it can be in the County a couple days a week and also be used by other suburban police departments on a call out basis. As far as off days it is not a twenty four hour a day unit. The Sheriff due to budget cut pulled two of the five Sheriffs officers out of the unit leaving three to do the work of five. Now the Sheriffs Officer also do not have squad cars so we use our regular personal vehicle just like CPD so it can take time for to respond. Yes we are not LA, LA has been doing this for over twenty years. The helicopter unit has been in existence for just over a year and following Federal FAA guideline Chicago and Sheriff protocol. As well as answering to all three at the same time. It not just jumping into the squad car and patrolling the hood.
