Ready for the Olympics?

All the fawning coverage of the boxing extravaganza aside, this is what matters:
  • The Chicago Marathon turned into a disaster course two weeks ago. Water wasn't the only thing that ran out; ambulances were also in short supply.
  • There was an ambulance shortage, dispatchers didn't have maps and in the case of fallen runner Chad Schieber, paramedics actually got lost.

Some are calling it an emergency meltdown. At the height of the heat and humidity, runners became dehydrated, collapsed and ambulances raced to help.

What you haven't heard about or seen is the chaos that erupted surrounding the emergency response.
Anyone can throw a parade. Chicago has about 200 of them a year. What really ought to be judged is the performance in disaster conditions, and the City failed miserably.

And this was without a bomb going off or a toxin in the air or a building falling down. This was a peaceful crowd, orderly for the most part, and an overly warm fall day threw a giant wrench into something that had been running smoothly for 30 years.

Go read the Channel 2 article. Then wonder about Chicago's ability to run an Olympic event.

A few more million given away:

VERDICT IN TODAY'S CASE

A federal jury awarded more than $2 million Tuesday to a man who claimed he was falsely arrested and charged with attempted child abduction.

Timothy Finwall, 40, said two Chicago detectives concocted a case against him in 2001 after a composite sketch was circulated in his neighborhood, and he emerged as a convenient suspect. He eventually was acquitted in criminal court and says he has been fully vindicated.

The ironworker said he believes the jury's decision proves police got the wrong person.

EVEN AFTER: Jennifer Hoyle, a spokeswoman for the city's Law Department, said the city stands by the policework of Martin Garcia and Dion Boyd. Both the young victim and her mother testified at Finwall's criminal and civil trial that he was the person who attempted to lure the girl away.

The City will be broke in no time now at this rate.

There are more Catholic High Schools in the Chicago area that hold sportings events in excess of 3,00 people and it comes off without a hitch. They have no free police resources, no one to close down streets, no one to direct parking lot traffic, and no free money from the city to put on such events. For some reason everyone in the media like to portray this boxing event as a huge accomplishment.

It is one event with 750 athletes and most likely 3,500 spectators, that is the cities estimate. I do love how they say the parade was a huge deal too. I was downtown at the same time and I love the fact that the people they showed along the parade route, which were not that many, were actually leaving work and trying to get to the trains to head home but had been block by all the bracades, traffic aides and police from crossing until the parade ended. Instant crowd for the parade but none of them cared.

The opening gig at the end of the route was filled with the boxers, their trainers, and all the people who came along with them. Who actually from this area went to it?

Drove by UIC tonight as well and there was more police officers traffic aides,, and white shirts outside then their were people inside the event.

Another nice touch as well was all the exempt cars parked in the middle of the median along racine.

So when Chicago gets the Olympics, where will Daley rent the heavy weaponry to put in the cars?

You know he won't let us keep it once his Olympics are done!!

Mr. Boyd is a merit useless hack presently assigned to the Internal Affairs Division as a Detective were he can crucify the working police something he was never and never will be. Worked with the famous Sgt (pow)cedrick.

ready for the olympics? are you kidding me. the bud billiken parade which took place where the olympics would be was a disaster! tons of 10-1's, shootings, it was living hell.

can you imagine a poor family from iowa walking in that neighborhood? they would be a sitting duck.

talk about man power. we would need a team of 15,000 officers alone to man the olympics and you mean to tell me we are ready to host the olympics.

what a joke. i would love to see it. besides daley is pushing the olympics so hard. who knows if he will still be in office by time it comes around.

besides the second district is a eye sore. thats our holding cell for over a million people watching the olympics? have you been in there? try getting hot water in that building......haaaaaaaaaa what a joke.

OK why was State St and several East/West streets closed for a parade of boxers who walked from the Palmer House to the Chicago Theatre?

Why wasnt this held on a saturday?

This may have been a stroke of PR genius of someones part. The closing of streets put masses of people on the state watching the parade. On a saturday it would have a ghost town. Hence it appeared on the news that Chicago is behind boxing and the olympic bid.

More smoke and mirrors- it was chicagoans being held hostage with no means of escape.

***********************************

We will have NO heavy weaponry for the Olympics. We will be fed a few tid-bits of equipment, that add up to nothing. Daley trusts us not with weapons. ALL security will be provided by federal agencies. Drill that into your heads everyone, ALL security will be provided by federal agencies.
The roll of the CPD will be street corner smiles, overnight venue property protection, and mass transit ride-alongs. THAT'S ALL. Better to retire and work private security on 2016. Count on it !

Chicago is not ready. By the time '016 comes this dept will be completely neutered. Then the smallest protest march will unhinge everything!

NO NO NO NO NO!!!

Do NOT bother to attribute any weight to this article. Say what you will about the city and the Olympics and the political maneuvering going on, but this whole thing is about a couple of paramedics from outside the city who were in sight of the medical district and still managed to get lost. That’s all it is. The rest of it is window dressing.

And disregard the paramedics’ crap about trying to get some direction from the dispatchers. It didn’t happen, no matter what they wrote in the report.

The media wanted to point a finger on this one, and didn’t feel like Niles was a big enough target, so they came down on the city. It’s that simple.

Lets see now:
#1 radio batteries that cant make it thru a shift.

#2 Unreliable squad cars that are mechanical death traps.

#3 Not all the cars have PDTs

#4 manpower shortages,we dont have 13,500.

#5 absolutely no emergency equipment in squad cars. Not even road flares.

#6 no rifles or shotguns for patrol, only our pea shooters.

#7 TARA training is complete farce,utterly usless.SHAM.

#8 No real disaster plan, only BS.

#9 No real security threat assessments on critical targets.

#10 Vital infrastucture left unprotected,water,electricity,bridges,trains.

I will be retired when all hell breaks loose if we actually get the Olympics. Better believe it-- even if Daley is long gone as mayor he and his cronies will benefit$$$$ from the Olympics. Perhaps he will get some "honorary" spot with a hefty pay$ day. Look out for Walsh construction to do most of the building.

No one is attending the boxing event. The Cubans aren;t here, so it isn't what it is supposed to be. The Cubans will win six gold medals at the next Olympics. Like they always do.

More people watch the Wolves or Northwestern Football than what these people draw. The Sox-ROX series will draw more interest.
Take your girlfriend to a bar and watch the Bears or Sox/Rox. Don't wast your time or money watching 120 pounders in headgear and big gloves have a pillow fight.

By this time next week they will be papering the house.
