This is Great

From the comments:
  • OFF TOPIC:THIS IS A TRUE STORY OUT OF 018 AND AN EXAMPLE OF THE WHINING PUNKS WE HAVE COMING OUT OF OUR GREAT ACADEMY.YESTERDAY THE RECRUITS ASSIGNED TO THE MICHIGAN AVE.WINDOW DETAIL GOT A RIDE FROM MICHIGAN TO THE STATION AT THE END OF THEIR TOUR IT THE WAGON.NOT LIKING BEING DRIVIN BACK IN THE BACK OF A PADDY WAGON THEY DECIDED TO STORM THE CAPTAINS OFFICE,WITHOUT KNOCKING,AND DEMAND TO BE DRIVIN IN THE VAN FROM NOW ON!THIS IS NO JOKE.THE CAPTAIN HAS MORE TIME ON THE JOB THAN THE PIECES OF SHIT HAVE ON EARTH.LONG STORY SHORT,THEY ARE NOW MAKING THE TRIP BACK TO THE STATION ON FOOT.TO MAKE IT EVEN BETTER THE WATCH COMMANDER CAME OVER THE RADIO AND TOLD THE RECRUITS TO MEET AT MICHIGAN AND CHICAGO AND START WALKIN IN,IT WAS GREAT!THINGS BETTER TURN AROUND CAUSE WE ARE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE.
Name the W/C. This guy gets our "Saltiest Old-time Boss of the Year Award."

Way to install a little bit of discipline, respect and such in the young hair gel police.

Whoa! Slow down there... Yes, I totally agree that thoss Green Fucks needing a little wake up call; and very funny thing the Capt/WC did to boot.

But Before you go saluting anyone, did it ever occurr to you, and it's only fair to say that maybe, just maybe, the boss not only had more time than all combined ,but in doing what he did, he was sure confident that he had more clout than they did (Or does he?) to do that to some Clout Baby recruit he may have pissed off some exempt member or politician.

TO BE CONTINUED...

It's about fucking time!!!! I am so sick of recruits and PPO's demanding things? I was in 015 talking to the W/C when this recruitburst in and stated, "I can't work with this DOG, I have this and that.... Never even on the fucking street and she was bitching about her DOG. I wanted to fucking strangle her but the W/C was polite in telling her too bad. Before you start bitching about the broads, I have seen this with the male recruits too. I don't care what status you are in....Recruit, PPO, PO, Sgt, LT... You have to have some sort of respect (in public) for the rank. You can't just assumethat you are better than everybody else and your shit is the most important. If you are a PPO/Recruit/Etc... take your turn in the barrel and deal with it. If ot, quit. It won't be any better anywhere else...

It seems to be a younger generation thing. The I want and must get my way generation. Complete lack of respect for the chain of command, even in the civilian depts. Lack of respect and down right insulting way of speaking to senior employees let alone the bosses (not that all of them deserve respect, it's just the principle of the matter). They're rude and self centered.
Good for the commander make them walk, maybe one day the dumbasses will figure out they can ride the bus for free.

AHHHHH....That explains it. Heard it on the zone today. I was working when over the radio came "Have the Michigan Ave. window detail meet at Chicago and Michigan and proceed on foot to the station". Almost blew coffee outta my nose when I heard that.

Think those recruits are bad? Word has it that in 001 that a Bruce Lee cousin is a real stroke, and a few of the Females have approached the sgts complaining that the they are ladies and the males are not acting like gentlemen. Poor girls didnt your daddy's pay enough attemtion to ya? Suck it up girls you wanted a mans job.

Geez say a few at lunch friday, and gave a wave and a nod, which was greeted with a roll of the eyes. Regular salutation between PO's who dont know one another. So I sat close to them and using my outside voice berated the eye rolling douche bags.

BTW- How many shopping days till Christmas?

I would like to get all three sides of the story, the recruits side, the captains side, and then what actually happened. Remember putting all recruits and new police officers in the same boat, is like saying everyone who has over 15 years on the job is; fat, lazy, and bitter.

"Way to install a little bit of discipline, respect and such in the young hair gel police"

Yea, maybe they were out of line entering without knocking. And maybe they should learn a lesson. But in a way, I don't blame them totally.

This Department has a knack for screwing POs over. You'll never feel bad about standing up for yourself - someone has to and the F.L.O.P. sure the Hell doesn't!

Quality Leadership is a skill that I have seen rarely displayed on this job.
The majority of bosses on this Department range from backstabbing to incompetent to downright dangerous.

As an ex-military guy, let me tell you that the first quality of Leadership is judged on "would you follow that Supervisor into battle?" For the overwhelming majority of bosses on this Dept, that answer is going to be a resounding "Hell No!"

To judge the recruits on their respect/discipline is putting the cart before the horse. Fix the Leadership problems starting from the top, and the rest will fall into place

Long, long time FTO here. Almost 30 years as the po-leese and 18 years as an FTO (formerly Patrol Specialist.)

As much as I would love to criticize these recruits, you can't place the blame on all of them. I had a new guy in my car a while back on his FIRST DAY out of the Academy who scrunched down into the corner of the passenger seat, slid his thumbs into his gunbelt and casually smirked "Yeah.....I'm just in this for the 1st and the 16th."

After the appropriate amount of screaming and dressing-down, I told him that I NEVER wanted to hear those words come out of his mouth again. I must have made quite an impression on him as he's now a Lieutenant in an area Detective unit and seems to be universally respected and admired.

The point is that NO ONE comes onto the police department with the INTENT of being a dogass. Even the guy who is all about the clout, telephone call, political grease, wants to be the po-leese, even just a little.

This kid didn't wanna be a pooch when he started but, unfortunately, he LEARNED those words at 1300 W. Jackson! He wanted to do all the cop shit they show on TV but he heard some guy who couldn't hack it in a beat car stand in front of his homeroom class and tell everyone how he's "burned out" or "seen it, done it" out on those mean streets. Instead, some academy loser passed along the implied belief that someone owes the new guys or gals something, that police service isn't what it's all about.

Academy classes are bullshit. They don't follow classical teaching methods (having a list of teaching objectives, presenting enlightening lecture and creating a test which will demonstrate the students ability to show what he's absorbed) but instead are just "teach the test" classes; telling recruits what they need to know in order to pass an upcoming exam. Many instructors are arrogant assholes who instruct recruits on Bad Attitude, Cockiness and Poor Service instead of Law, Case Reporting and General Orders.

I'm sure if you ask the Academy Staff they'll tell you they're filling these new noggins with the latest technology, CAPS awareness and verbal judo. I challenge the academy to take a poll of EVERY GODDAMN FTO in the city and they'll tell you how completely unequipped these kids are. They have no idea of how to write a simple battery case report, how to do even the simplest traffic crash or understand the Military Chain of Command.

Anyone with more than 45 minutes on the job remembers Captains/Watch Commanders who would have strung a recruit up by his neck for even darkening his doorway with anything less than to respectfully inform him that the station was on fire. Now these guys stroll in the W/C's office like it was the walk-up window at White Castle.

Even if you don't ask the FTOs, ask the Watch Commanders across the city and listen to one horror story after another about some goof just off his probation, storming into the W/C's office complaining about someone else working "his car" or some other such nonsense.

Start with a new attitude in the TJO (Timothy J. O'Connor Police Training Academy) and find guys who won't teach these guys the WRONG things. No attitudes, no war stories and no "it's all bullshit, kid" speeches. Not only will you have these kids strive to be something better but give them a fresh injection of purpose and maybe we'll ALL have a little more morale and self-esteem in the 2nd largest police department in the U.S.

You ain't seen nuthin' yet. Wait til you catch the loser we'll get for the next Supt.

If you can't jump the long-sunken ship yet, assume a profile far beneath the radar. We've gone from proactive to reactive to inactive.

Stand down. Encourage all your neighbors to arm themselves and shop outside the city/county whenever possible. Order TVs and all other major appliances from the Internet. Give each other swift back-up and pray the bastids kill each other off.

Note that in the study naming Detroit as the most crime-infested city in the U.S., Chicago was disqualified from the "competition". How convenient.

The middle class has fled in tens of thousands. We must stay and suffer because Chicago is the last major city to require residency.

May as well rename our once beloved city Daleyville or Clout City after that totalitarian prick and his shameless corruption.

I would have been real glad to hitch a ride from anyone instead of walking that distance!

Try that shit in below zero weather, which by the way will be here soon enough! I'll bet you won't complain about riding in the back of a paddy wagon to checkoff then!

This is still like being in the military and you had better learn to shut the fuck up!

Hey, if you don't like doing anything any more for whatever reason, that's fine. I understand this piss ass city does not deserve any of our numbers. However don't bitch about the new kids, better yet try to teach them something, or put them in teir place. If the story goes the way it has been posted, then good job to the Capt. OK... you're kiddin' right? Daley is going to reap the whirlwind on this college requirement nonsense... I was an FTO a few years back and I saw the end coming. I always asked my recruits when was the last time they had a knock down drag out brawl with someone in adulthood...aside from taking on Tero or Marsh and I was greeted with a blank stare... usually from the the kids from the suburbs but it's not really their fault. I always said give me a sharp kid who grew up in the city (or served in the military), I can teach 'em how to push the right buttons on the bozo-puter, the rest of this job is instinct and knowing a can of kiwi from a dog log. It doesn't take college to be a good police officer (not putting your hands in peoples pockets for your own gain and not trick bagging your partner rate high on my list) but this sense of entitlement the young'uns have now? I'll say this, this job doesn't love you and it owes YOU nothing, stfu & stfd! The only things you need open are your eyes and ears for the first ten years of your career, and guess what? You still don't know it all! Come visit again after you've worked for some monster who denies your time when the kid is sick or carries you awop when your flight is grounded because of a blizzard even when you call and the prick says he expects you at roll call on the hour & you're 1000 miles away or work for someone who says he's fucking you over because his captain fucked him over... bunch of whiny cry fags, get something real to complain about

I have 7 years on the job. My partner was on furlough and they put me with this PPO about 2 months from getting off his probation. After roll call I get the radios and car keys. PPO says to me "you got the keys?" I say "yep" PPO says "let me have em, this is my car im driving" I just looked at him and started laughing, he sat in the passenger seat and pouted like a baby all night.

Congrats Capt Crotty!!! These new kids have ZERO respect and ZERO understanding of this job...they have ZERO comraderie and talk like a running toliet!!! They don't know when to "Shut the fuck up" as I was told by my FTO...because....."I don't know shit about shit" and he was absolutely correct! Not today...you'll get some kid with 2 minutes on the job telling you what he knows and how to do it...These kids need to learn several things...#1) RESPECT...You NEVER...NEVER walk into the W/C office and tell him anything...period! If you are so bold to tell on someone...which the new kids are...you go to your FTO for guidance or a senior officer first....then if you MUST.......you can approach your Sgt. Something I never would have dreamed of 15+ years ago when I came on the job but it is done today without even considering the aftermath because the kids are not too smart. #2 TOGETHERNESS...work together and be a team...don't whine, learn to get along...if you don't like someone...TFB live with it...don't run to your Sgt or W/C ...do your time in the barrel. #3 LEARN....You DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING if you have under 3 years on the job so keep your mouth shut and watch and learn....ask valid questions and don't give opinions to supervisors or senior officers, you'r primary obligation is to LEARN how to do your job...not whine or complain because you don't like your watch or car or riding with Joe...TFB..When I came on this job I would work for free!!! I wanted to do what I do and wanted to learn how to do it and be the best....I was and am not here for "just a paycheck" ...Just a few more "notes" of interest...Learn how to write a good report....that is paramount on this job....if you can't write good paper...you are useless.. When you write the report make sure it is legable...take pride in what you sign your name to,you never know where that report will end up!! Respect yourself and your uniform...dress like you care about what image you want to project...you are a Chicago Police Officer...not a friggin rapper or punk in the street...polish your shoes at least every other week....wear a clean uniform and keep your hair well groomed...Clean and maintain your equipment ie: gun , handcuffs etc...when you need it it must be well maintained to function properly.Don't embarass yourself or the department Ie: other police officers by doing stupid shit off duty...DUI,Domestics etc...act like a professional and conduct yourself as such at all times or suffer the consequences...but you'll still whine and complain when you get jammed up by "that fucking Sgt. cause he's an asshole" when in reality YOU will jam yourself up...Lastly...this is NOT like working at Target or IBM...this is a serious job with a lot of comedy...the only problem with this job is #1 you can get killed...#2 you can be prosecuted for things that you normally would get a slap on the wrist for if you did work at Target. Please stop acting like little children and LEARN how to be grownups...things are not always the way you like and that's just too bad...deal with it...you need to learn your job and that only comes with experience....no school in the world can teach you how to do this job....only through experience...learn how to do this job and remember one final thing...anything you do on this job...can follow you forever...and I mean forever...so think before you act...your career depends on it!! Signed a Northside Sgt. God Bless and please be safe!!

In two years those recruits over in 018 that were forced to walk will be FTO's teaching newbies how to be the police and how to beef to the commander if they don't get what they want.

Let them do a stop on a multiple felony conviction GD or VL and see what happens when they get bitch slapped or punched square in the face.

Police used to hate crime and criminals. These pukes are the fucking Starbuck generation, they must have their lattes and a ride in a climate controlled vehicle to get it.

Good for Leo for chewing out those whining, wet-nosed PPOs, if they stormed in. 25-30 years ago you hardly ever saw the Captain and God forbid you talk to him before you talk to your Sergeant who you probably hardly ever saw either.

Back then a rookie would never be on Michigan Avenue in November-December, but they would in January. The Michigan Avenue Foot-Men would come back to the station with a lot of shopping bags just before Christmas.

On the other hand, the current type of squadrol is not really good for transporting police officers except in an emergency and this is obviously not an emergency. Would you want to be in that claustrophobic box, standing or with the restraining bar in your back, or in your stomach?

The old wagons you sat on benches facing your comrades, and the back door could be propped open.

Good that they should walk, or hop the CTA. They should also be given Call Box Keys and told to "make a pull" every 45 minutes.

At least they didn't try to ride standing on the backstep of the squadrol like that F/? Special Employment cop did last spring.

Stay Safe, and have a Happy Holiday Season.

Hey, hes a BOSS in 18! I doubt he has much to worry about. And he's old school, so he probably would make the whiney fools' clout walk home too. And he's a member of the KMA club. Something goes down, its Kiss My Ass, im outta here!

Capt. Crotty. What a standup guy. We need more bosses like him. I would have loved to have seen if these goofs tried this on Capt Whalen from 016, (41 years on the job) this guy would have kicked the sh*t out of them for breathing the same air as him. Whalen is one of the original and real deal Capt's left. Total old school.

I would like to get all three sides of the story, the recruits side, the captains side, and then what actually happened. Remember putting all recruits and new police officers in the same boat, is like saying everyone who has over 15 years on the job is; fat, lazy, and bitter.

11/19/2007 01:49:00 AM

THEIR SIDE? Are you kidding me? Whatever 'side' they have should be expressed to their SUPERVISING SGT---NOT to the Captain in a district. There is a chain of command, and this is a paramilitary job. Jeez.

11/19/2007 08:06:00 AM
.....................................
no rumor guys this was the real deal.a few stormed the office as if they were reverends. took on the wrong boss. they get no sympathy from the regulars at 018. the bosses in 018 are the best. never have a problem getting time and if you need help they go out of their way.
i realize they didnt ask to work window detail, but ppo's dont get to pick and choose. we all did our time in these spots, some good/some bad. but to bitch at a boss when they have no time on. what were they thinking? maybe they thought if they held their breath and stamped their feet, the w/c would cave, hire a limo and make sure they had lattes . they dont have to do arrests and they barely back up the reg. foot cops. if this is what is coming out of jackson blvd, we are doomed. if they cant handle a wagon ride, they probably are in the wrong job. no respect, no clue.
one last observation what is with these faux mohawks?

As an ex-military guy, let me tell you that the first quality of Leadership is judged on "would you follow that Supervisor into battle?" For the overwhelming majority of bosses on this Dept, that answer is going to be a resounding "Hell No!"

To judge the recruits on their respect/discipline is putting the cart before the horse. Fix the Leadership problems starting from the top, and the rest will fall into place

11/19/2007 04:55:00 AM

I work for the Captain, and rest assured, most of us would work for him ANYWHERE. A great boss to work for. Never a problem with time. Backs you up on paper. If you screw up, he helps you make it right. If you hit OT he doesn't act like it's coming out of his pocketbook. I almost fell out of my chair last year at a roll call when he actually APOLOGIZED that he could not carry everybody on management when some of the guys didn't make the bid to 3rd watch...most bosses would simply say 'check the sheets. some of you are goners,' but here we have an old-school boss that is a member of the KMA club that still cares about his troops!!!! He (and the 3rd watch LT's) are definitely throwbacks to GOOD bosses....bosses that will go to bat for the troops. The kind of bosses that as soon as this story came out, I immediately knew that these kiddies messed up big time. Nothing like seeing 1 year wonders strut around because they are 'from the ghetto'....not realizing that many of us in 18 were in the ghetto once too....for YEARS before we were lucky enough to make it into 18. Now if you will excuse me, Wal-Mart is having a sale on hair gel, so I have to go stock up...

Back in the late 1990s LT. PETE "No Balls" Defrancisco, (now retired) ordered about 11 coppers INCLUDING A SERGEANT to GET IN A WAGON from 025/2nd Watch to go down to Grant Park for the Bulls Rally after they won a championship.

To say the least on of the guys; Tom Maleck had a heart attack in the back of the wagon. Lt. "No Balls" career was shot and he retired. Maleck went on the "Heart Attack Disability" leave. He just died last year, God Bless Him .. he was a great guy.

I'm now a sergeant. If someone orders me in the back of a wagon they can kiss my ass. My advise to the recruits is take your time walking back to the station. Even more important:
Take your time doing EVERYTHING on this job until you retire.

I have coppers with 5 years on tell me how it was different in their day. It's human nature. Imagine the coppers from the 40's and 50's when all the long haired pot smoking police showed up in the 60's and 70's.Do you think they were impressed ? Anybody remember approximatley ten years ago the infamous class that shot spitballs at a guest? In my time i have worked with almost all good guys and some goofs regardless of their time on the job. Just like the recent spate of scandals they have always been and will always be. In closing i have to say ilkied the fact they told these goofs to go &^&((&&%*&^( themselves!

Two sides to the story. The officers driving the wagon were complete assholes. They gave the PPO's a horrible ride to mess with them. WHY? Easy to mess with PPO's. There was a van available but the LT ordered them into the wagon. WHY? Then he oders some to walk back to district? WHY? They offered to the a bus back but ordered to walk. Where was the leadership? Captain over reacted and did not have the true story. The two officers driving the wagon should be hung. Why do you mess with young officers? Absolutely not one white shirt took the time to learn the facts and stand up for the poor treatment of PPO's. How many officers would actually ride in a wagon? Give me a break. Try that with officers off probation. WTF! Leadership my ass. Big tough captian fucks with PPO's. Sleep better at night captain!

I was just at the academy last week for in service training and was disappointed to see who is teaching these kids. You have a gym instructor Pierre P. who has less than 5 yrs on and was a useless PO in the 023 District. Get real! Send some officers down there who could teach recruits not only from the directives and law but add a little on the job experience. Tobias needs to have instructors that aren't qualified solely due their race, sex, or clout.

I've too have had my issues with the upper ranks as well during my recruit days and I'll tell you this...people will respect you more when you open your mouth for what you believe! They may not like it, but they will respect it.

I've done this in the academy and on the streets and I've NEVER gotten any backlash whether I've gone through the ranks or straight to the top! Personally I believe in skipping the ranks because depending on who you are dealing with...your message may never make it to the top. If you want it done right....do it yourself!!!

I also believe that there is a respectful way of doing things and barging into da top dogg's office like you "Run It" and your name is not Seiser...will put you in a world of hurt for an undetermined amount of time.

These Recruits are young(seniority-related) and maybe disrespectful. If I were told to hike it I'd have no problem with it. I'd just know to dress for the weather.

Face it....when these guys leave the academy MOST of them will never do anything resembling that weak ass P.O.W.E.R. test!!! They should be walking anyway!!!

These aren't the recruits in the academy. When they leave the training academy they are sent to training districts and I am positive 018 is not a training district. These are either PPO from training districts detailed to 0-18 for the Michigan Ave window detail or the PPO's that just got off probation and are detailed. One guy was right the recruits in the academy are too scraed to complain and these must be the ones just off probations or they are fools and idiots to complain as if on probation they are at case workers and can be fired for anything.
One final comment is that not ALL recruits and PPO's are like that. Many have been in the military and are very aware of the chain of command and take orders no questions asked from supervisors and wouldn't dare question and order. Ask any instructor and he will tell you they are the easiest to teach
I was on the job for many years and I cannot believe this would or could happen. For my first few years the captain was God and you could never even get to see him, let alone talk to him and I'd hate to be the Lt or Sgt who allowed they PPO's in without first screening them and seeing what they wanted
Hooray for the Captain and the Lt glad they had the balls to do it as most wont in this day and age

YES! That's awesome! Those young bucks are in 18 for god's sake! It tooks YEARS to make it over there! So ungrateful! They could (should) be spending their time in englewood, the deuce, or the west side, just like the rest of us had to!

******Uh hello ding dong. They are detailed to 18 for the window detail. They didn't ask to be there. It's pretty shitty that they stick ppo's in the back of the wagon and fuck around hitting bumps etc... while on the way to drop them off. I'm sure they expect this behavior from street schmucks, but not from Police Officers. This f*in department can't even provide cars for officers that are detailed. They either use their own gas, put mileage on their own cars, walk, take the bus. I would be going IOD for a back injury for bouncing around in the wagon that the same shithead arrestees are transported in. The boss is an asshole and so are the PO's that are driving the wagon!!!!! Throwing their weight around with PPO's. Tough Guys! Gimme a fricking break!

And for the FTO that posted...

If you ask the PPO's they tell you it's the FTO's that suck.
Academy training is only the beginning. FTO's are supposed to enhance the training when recruits get out, not expect recruits to Know It All when they walk out the doors of the academy.

I know I'm not the only one that had a lot to learn when I hit the streets. I remember my FTO taking my reports and telling me to re-write them over and over til I got it right. Most of learning comes with time, applying what you learned which then develops into experience. I guess you must have forgotten what it's like to walk in a recruits shoes. You must have been the "know it all" that everyone hated and probably still hate.

*****Signed.... NOT a PPO

I came on in 1990 and don't considered myself an "old timer" at all. But to anyone who came on in or after 1994, let this "medium timer" fill you in. Again the guys with 25, 30 years have stories I can't relate to, but I'm a 90's hiree. Before 1994 we rotated every 28 days. We worked days, then midnights, then afternoons. There were no straight watches, and you got the DOG they assigned to you. Try raising kids on that schedule with a wife who also has a job. They tried to accommodate people but it was pretty much whatever DOG was available. There were maybe, and I mean maybe 3-4 people who worked straight 3rd watch in the district I worked. They never had a regular car because they were technically visitors to whatever watch was currently working afternoons that period. The people that rotated with the watch worked their regular beat car on every watch they rotated to. The straight 3rd watch people bounced from car to car, and starting time to starting time to cover furlos or time due. Nobody worked straight days! I can't remember anyone working straight midnights either. There were real captains back then on every watch, not "appointed" captains. Guys with over 20 years on did not walk into the captains office without permission. And nobody told the captains what they "had to have".

I hear the word clout on here an awful lot. OK, Two types of clout exist in the dept, always has and probably always will.
First, Political clout,Democrats,Republicans.Yes republicans also have some clout. Then Family Clout, just look at the names of some officers, its family,(relations).
Now, I go way back to OW Wlison, which makes me kinda ancient on here, but when thru enough shit and saw enough shit to last a lifetime. Low pay, pay own insurance, poor driving stock.
(Ford Falcon,Dodge &ford 6 cylinders and Clout wasn't too heavy yet.Now the internal clout.
The Capt. was God in a sense, you didn't really see the Comd. that much. working in 11 was no different than that Hell Hole it is today.
No Tact, but if you worked you were recognized and got work the (Crime Car) suit up in civies, but bring in a felony or gun or hot car. That was Clout, and yes you could pick your beat and partner.
If you work for a Sgt. Lt. Capt. and do good, who is going to take you with them when they move up? surley not a dogass. Also years ago, the chief of patrol was Dick Rochford and he taught some classes at Loop Jr. College.
He was asked about clout since his brother was the Sup. And he said. "who are you going to help if not family" Clout.
Now, Crotty,Reardon, and others are familar names from the past,as well as Starks and a host of others, Clout? probably.
Now, as to invasion of my office by PPO's when I was the WC. its kick ass time and a call to Training fo find out what the F%$# they are doing there.
I spent some time there and don't believe we sent out that type of officer.
Anyway, Clout is there and you roll with the punches. One more thing, no Clout wants to be ambarrased, so if the Cloutee is a fuckup have no mercy.
I came from the BLUE and they are what counts, without them there is no organization.

g to find out what the fuck they are doing on Jackson Blvd.

If it's the bottom you work yourself up, do a little extra, stay a little later---older people who post here will get the picture. These kids out of college today are arrogant, spoiled, demanding brats. It's in every department in our agency. In their minds, they have it coming, the world owes them something. It's unbelievable. Shocking, almost that these young people can be that self-centered. On one hand, they have a college degree. On the other hand, they don't have the insight to realize they have very little to offer in the way of life experience from which such bravado would emerge. Bravo for that Captain! This Department has a knack for screwing POs over. You'll never feel bad about standing up for yourself - someone has to and the F.L.O.P. sure the Hell doesn't!

I think that any officer who thinks he/she is being messed with should absolutely stand up for him/herself, however the captain is not the person to bring it to, nor is the captains office the place to scream and pitch a bitch unless you have already pitched it with your sgt. and LT, and maybe even talked to a few friends... even a clout baby's clout should tell them not to do that...
I usually tell recruits, if you have a problem, first find an FTO, then go to a Sgt. then a LT and finally to the Capt. but don't be surprised if your desired result isn't what happens when you get to the Captain with your problem...

11/19/2007 05:40:00 AM

I pretty much agreed with most all of what you said. I would add that the attitude that the recruits need to be coddled and that we need to think of ways to reward them (other than getting paid!) NEEDS TO BE SHITCANNED...
IMHO the recruits are sitting in class, getting full pay for basically doing nothing but learning whatever the academy wants to teach them, isn't the pay check enough of an incentive? I say if it isn't, get with the SEE plan (Seek Employment Elsewhere).

The gym held us back a few minutes which in turn caused almost the entire class to be late because of not enough showers. The lt. calmly kept asking everyone why we were late to his class. Eveyone kept saying the gym kept us a little longer. Little did we know we were fronting off the gym department and especially the sgt. in charged. The Lt. found the sgt. and reemed him a new asshole and made him drop paper. Well we all know shit rolls down hill and the sgt. used every profanity word in the book and told us if he had to drop paper, we had to drop paper. We had to write To-From reports on why we late to Lt. class. For three weeks straight we had no lunch and had to stand in attention in the gym during our lunch hour. This would end once our to-froms stated what he wanted to read on them. It took us a while but we finally figured out that they all had to say the same thing and that was it was the PPO's fault for being late to the Lt. class and that the good sgt. had nothing to do with it. Moral of the story, remember there is a chain of command and shit rolls down hill.

Hey, Patrick Fitzgerald, are you reading this? How about some Federal oversight here? We are tired of corrupt clout captains telling us to walk.

Where is that Federal monitor?
The Black recruits contacted Jesse and Al. Hey, Captain, when they march on the station what are you going to do. HAH. You screwed the pooch Captain. You messed with the wrong people. We are the real police reccruits. We don't ride in wagons and we don't walk. We have rights and entitlements.

Now im no old vet or anything only a "two year wonder"...and no..im not in tru!! but, last year we were put in the district for 5 months and then they told us we had to report to do the window detail downtown. we were put down there and we had two classes, one went to 18 and we went to one. I have no idea how these idiots can bitch one word about that detail. so far that detail is some of the best fun i have had in my short career. everyday we worked in 001 from 1400 to 2230(well...maybe 2130 or 2200). our job was to walk up and down state and michigan, go into the stores and talk to the very good looking employees and eat very good food everynight. we got checked in by our sgt once a night and we could go where ever we wanted then. all of my christmas shopping got done and almost everynight we would go out to the bar. i think that it is rediculous that they are complaining and i say f'em if they dont see what a good thing they have. i know i have no time on the job and shouldnt throw stones but they made us take the cta from our post to the station but the bus rides were usually pretty fun cause the bus was filled with 20 of us laughing and havin a good time. i think the sgt should be pretty pissed that they went over his head.

you should hear these guys in 015 thinking that they are off probation only a few months, that alredy know everything and "know" that they are staying on 3rd watch (come january) and how bad midnights suck. thats something to hear. although the bosses on 3rd watch there are pretty good. but dam 20 months on the job and ENTITLED to 3rd watch.

###############################

HHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM....sounds like useless joe papke on 3rd watch in 015...... do nothing know it all with two years on. cant tell him a thing

I worked that same window detail quite a few years ago and we were never given a ride by anybody. The attitude was quite simple...IT'S A FRIGGIN' FOOTPOST AND THAT MEANS YOU WALK!!!...We loved avery minute of that detail and were treated very well in 018 by everybody including the public.

I do think however that no police officer should ever get in the back of a wagon for transportation purposes. That is for dead people and prisoners. I know I would refuse to get in there myself and I have some time on the job.

Having said that...I also think that no PPO has any business telling the W/C anything. All they had to do was walk back to the station. They are supposed to be doing that for the entire tour anyway so what's the problem??

11/19/2007 11:59:00 AM

No disrespect to anybody but I hear the horror stories of how you guys in 18 can be real asswipes to non-18th Dist. Coppers. I Just want to say that anytime I have ran into an off duty PO I have always been respectful and Courteous.

11/19/2007 10:10:00 AM

They learn it from the academy bosses. Like a white shirt that went to Tobias and whined that he should have a car to take home just because he has a white shirt. He got the car. So the recruits learn from the best whiners.

Why did the LT on scene order PPO's out of a van and into a wagon? Why not use the van already at scene? Why did the guys driving the wagon have to be such assholes? Try that with officers off probation! Where was the sergeant? Who could they turn to? They should not have went to the captain but why treat them so bad at end of detail? I think the LT should explain his actions. PPO's should not be on details. Let them learn the job first in the district. This incident has nothing to do with academy. Where are the FTO's? After academy, FTO's take over. Sad but most FTO's are incompetent. They take the promtion for money not to train. A good FTO is a very valuable asset.

To all the the PPO in 001 and 018 on the window watching detail here is the Chain of Command:
Sgt. then Lt. then Capt. then Commander the Deputy Chief.

As a PPO I was called into the W/C's office. When the Capt came to the door all the desks eyes were on him. When the invitation/Order was extended the blue hairs working the desk breathed a collective sigh. Spent the next 10 minutes standing in front of the Capt at attention while an arrest and case report was read and critique'd. This ended with a "Good Arrest Kid". Heck I was on cloud 9! Then he said Kid your working on the desk tomorrow cause there is more to police work than chasing the radio.

Worked for Crotty when he was a field LT. What a great boss to work for. How about sending him back to 011?

Does the academy even do lean and rest anymore?

I remember in the early 90's on midnights they were practicing for some sort of emergency and we ALL piled in the wagons and were brought to the now 'United Center" parking lots. Wanted to time how long it would take all districts to assemble some people in one spot. Guess what? we ALL took a wagon ride that night. Not any crying as I recall.

I was on the window detail in 018. We WALKED EVERYWHERE. No bus, no Sgt. car, nothing. We were there, the regular foot guy got lost...
end of story....I dont remember any crying at that time either.

Who here knew it all when we got out, or thought they knew it all based on daddy or mommy's war stories? And when we looked for an answer we expected guidence from those who knew (old timers). Aint no sign over the Academy sayin "BURGER KING" so this aint the "fine, have it your way" Police Dept!
TO:...As an ex-military guy, let me tell you that the first quality of Leadership is judged on "would you follow that Supervisor into battle?" For the overwhelming majority of bosses on this Dept, that answer is going to be a resounding "Hell No!"

To judge the recruits on their respect/discipline is putting the cart before the horse. Fix the Leadership problems starting from the top, and the rest will fall into place
Remember, you HAVE to respect the rank, not always the one wearing it! I, know the whole "earned, not given" part too. Youre right with the follow into battle, some of these bosses I wouldent follow to the head. Here and in the Military, but you got to respect the stripes, bars, leafs and birds. If not, what happens then?

TO Mr/Ms: ...Leadership my ass. Big tough captian fucks with PPO's. Sleep better at night captain! AND
Mr/Ms:I'm now a sergeant. If someone orders me in the back of a wagon they can kiss my ass. My advise to the recruits is take your time walking back to the station. Even more important:
Take your time doing EVERYTHING on this job until you retire.

Please take a good look in the mirror and ask the question "Why is this Dept. going to hell in a handbasket?" Most of us already know the answer, it might take you a little time to see it. Do us a favor and change your tampon.

I heard that the wagon guys gave the recruits the "royal treatment" ride that we used to reserve for police fighters

IF thats true and I say IF then those officers driving the wagon are two jag offs.

Sorry girls but we were all recruits and we used to take care of each other

Signed a Northside Sgt. God Bless and please be safe!!

11/19/2007 10:12:00 AM

So....let me get this straight. Nothing under 3 years on this dept. counts as knowledge? So does that mean all the things one learns in one or two years means shit? Or how about the old guys who get told about a rule change by a recruit they were unaware of? Surely you know something especially when you learn something new everyday.

Your statment makes no sense. 10-20 yrs on the job still can't make one an expert because if it did there would be a lot more p.o.'s who'd get promoted and there are still some that never developed past year one, two or three.

the problem is the training districts. so many come to a district at one time that these kids are put with acting FTOs who are just off probation and when they are off probation they are acting FTOs. it's not like the old days when you ride with a guy with experience for a few years.

If you noticed the order detailing the recruits to the window detail, they are all done with their cycles with the FTOs, so they should know better.

11/19/2007 10:23:00 PM

Wrong!!! Unless something has changed in the past year.....there ARE recruits still in the academy are assign to the window details before they even leave the academy. I know because I did it.

There are also other detail that recruits are assigned to in which they really have no business being there (i.e. Bud Billiken). Why place a recruit on the street on a post, tell them to do nothing and if something goes down call a blue shirt?

WOW!!! You must be one of those that made sgt with 6 years on the job. Way to be a supervisor!! You, my friend are a MORON!!! Not only do you not know the chain of command but you appear to be one of the "new police". Hope you never work my district! By the way, I am a sgt. also - for over 12 years and I am not proud to say that I am in the same group as you.

11/19/2007 11:45:00 AM

Umm, sorry but no - not even close

"Paramilitary" designates forces whose function and organization are similar to those of a professional military force. CPD doesn't even come close - not by a long shot. ISP, maybe...but not CPD

As I agree some of the younger officers on this job have no respect for the chain of command. If I was a civilian reading this I would start to believe the "blue wall of silence" doesn't exist anymore. I am 100% positive this happened in the 18 as posted but it is more disheartening to see the way other p/o's react and are the first to jump on these recruits. Remember you were once recruits, and in 5 years these recruits will be the same ones bad mouthing the recruits that did something stupid.
Someone said it earlier when they said you need to start from the top down to fix the problem. Bosses are to worried about being everyones friend instead of their boss. In over 8 yrs as a Sgt and 16 on the job, when you act as the sgt. in a fair and equitable manner the working officers on the watch will appreciate you more than you can imagine. Of course you are going to have bosses who are just total strokes, John Doty 006 C/O, just like you have recruits that are total morons, but at least we should be able to show a unified front.
God bless, stay safe, and happy holidays.

The last time I had to work a reverse sting, they had to transport about 5 of us in the back of a wagon to the dope spot. Nobody said a word about how dirty it was, "we didn't deserve this," "I'm filing a grievance," or I'm going to cry to my watch commander about this. We just did it because we were told to by a Lt. End of fricken discussion.

Dead bodies haven't been back there in years and how dirty can they be? If these one rock ghetto superstars make daily arrests in their districts, don't they have to search the filthy hypes on a daily basis? What is the difference? I would rather ride in the back of a wagon for a couple of minutes than search some of these disgusting, flea infested, cheesy feet smelling, halitosis breath smelling, goofs any day.

Instead of stuffing your faces with pumpkin pie on Thursday, why don't you eat an entire humble pie instead? Shut the hell up, shave your lame ass faux hawks, and deal with it crybabies.

Hooray for the PPO's. They stood up for themselves. Now if the barged into the captians office that was arong but for some strange reason I take that with a grain of salt. I myself wouldn't ride in a wagon let alone the back seat of cage car. I'm a Police Officer not a criminal.

It's kinda of funny that alot of you guys and gals on this blog routimely complain about how we are treated by the upper chain of command now some PPO's stand up for themselves and you guys berate them. That's what's wrong with this department it's us as patrolmen that have made this job worse than ever before. We don't stick together.

We don't question authority when we know we're given bad direction/information. Gone are the days of following orders without asking questions doing so will get fired, 5-20 yrs or better yet killed. How many times have we complained about doing other "units/departments jobs" but never said anything to command. Example sex offender checks which actually is supposed be done by the Detective Division. Or my favorite holding a seatbelt mission while the whole district is in a rap. We all grunt and moan to each other but never say or do anything about it. We might learn something from these recruits don't take crap.

018 3rd watch....

Kinda silly.

I've worked it a few tmes (TARA) and was not impressed.

3-7 year on the job, and they think they have it all figured out.

Mark Twain "reamin silent, thought a fool. Open your mouth, remove all doubt".

Drinking stories, screwing stories.
Going out of their way to avoid doing their job.

Guess that's why they are there. To do as little as possible.

Thank goodness for the workers in busy districts. And the wrkers in less busy districts.

POINT - get over yourself. When that letter came in the mail offering the job, most of us were thrilled. I was. I still am proud to be CPD. Things aren't so great at this time in CPD. Part of the rollercoaster ride.

PPO - can be terminated at any time before their probation period is over, without FOP representation
Enjoy yourself. Be good. Be honest.
FOP? better than nothing.

Leo Crotty - very good person. Very approachable.

He is in all aspects the Commander of the District in the Commanders absence. In old days, the Capt. was the big man. That is who ran the staion house. Still is that way to some degree.

When dealing with the Capt. W/C all utterances should start or end with:
"SIR"
"EXCUSE ME SIR"
"PARDON ME SIR"
"THANK YOU SIR"
"YES SIR"
"NO SIR"
"_________ CAPTAIN"

And before all the rebels respond - "FUCK YOU SIR" is not an acceptable response, even if it feels good.

Capt.

I agree with this. Now don't get me wrong there are some dumb PPO's out there who don't listen to a damn thing anyone has to say concerning this job but they were right about not riding in the back of wagon. All to often we forget that alot of the things they have us do makes abosolutely no damn sense. Riding in unsafe pool cars, doing deatils with 1 radio between 2 somtimes 3 officers or my favorite picking up "anthrax packages" with plastic gloves and a mask. Change only comes from standing up for yourself. I have no problem questioning anybody when something doesn't make any logical sense. The captain may be a good at givien out time due or a good "boss"(Remember that's your time any you earned it no them). Sometimes they too can make a error in judgement and they need to be called on it just like they are quick to call us out about ours.

Two things or me area given on this job for me 1. I'm a patrolman. 2. I will always have district assignment. I can't get any lower than a patrolman what can they do to me? NOT A DAMN THING. Until we as patrolmen understand this and stop trying to backstab each other, race bait, and all this other bs, while stroking off the bosses the better off we'll be.

What made it damn funny was the po, Tully, was totally serious when he made the statement to Magliano. There was no hesitation in his response to why he was using someone else's riot helmet for inspection? He even repeated the response when Magliano asked him to clarify.
Magliano kept his composure, but you could tell inside he even thought the response was hiliarious!

Let the same wagon crew drive you in the same manner. Hard stops and every bump. Why can't we stick together? Must we treat every new officer so bad? We create our own assholes. They were ordered to walk and not use the CTA. Great leadership in 018. When these PPO's get off probation then they can follow the example of Crotty and his crew and jump on new recruits. The cycle continues. This incident did not involve the academy but the goofs driving the wagon and LT on the scene. They should never approach the WC but some one let them know or provide guidance. They leave academy only to be treated like scum. This is embarassing for 018. Pull all PPO's of the detail and let 018 handle all details. I am curious, who was driving the wagon for those PPO's?

I was there when the guy from SOS said that to the Captain. There was nothing funny about what happened. Like 018, this is a growing problem in CPD. Lack of respect for leadership. I am still angry he got away with such a statement! I hear this po served overseas in the military. He should know better than to talk to a Captain in CPD like that. If I were Captain Magliano, I would have SPARed him in front of every officer for insubordination and conduct unbecoming an officer. Years ago, he would have taken a day for a remark like that. I would have given him 15 days myself. That would teach him a lesson he wouldn't soon forget.
Great example for the new PPO's in 006. And you wonder why SOS was hated? Yes, I noticed you former SOS po's towards the end of the line.
Who the hell says "If you're not cheating, then you're not trying Sir" to a Captain? What? You didn't think the Captain would notice your helmet numbers didn't match your star? Unbelievable! We have a joker in 006 huh? Action must be taken against this type of rebel. It's time joker gets his laugh taken.
As small as a winter inspection is, the SOS po was WRONG for trying to use another po's riot helmet. He was WRONG for not being prepared. He was WRONG for trying to make light of the situation. He had better hope he doesn't work with me, that's how I feel.
Calling him a cult hero in 006 is WRONG. There are more deserving po's in 006 to call cult hero than this SOS po. He and SOS embodies what is WRONG with this dept. Thank God SOS got disbanded. You 006 officers should all be angry with this blatant show of disrespect! I know I am!!!
