Words Fail Us

Channel 2, Channel 5, Channel 7, Tribune, Sun Times

What's it going to take people? What will it take to wake everyone up?

Someone asked that we not cover this entire story. How can we not when it's plastered all over every single news site in town? We're just supposed to ignore it and pretend that it never happened? That's not really an option.

Others have asked that we stop the piling on and providing a forum for people to bash. This is a site for people to vent, to rip, to complain about everything that is wrong with this job and unfortunately, incidents like this one are part of the problem. Ninety-nine and nine-tenths of coppers do a decent job most days in that they don't kill anyone unjustifiably, they aren't offered money to overlook something, they answer their calls, the lock up routine offenders, they write their parkers, movers whatever and they get home safe in one piece. Are there dogasses out there? Sure, everywhere. But even the dogs do a small favor to the rest of us by not ending up in a headline for something that is 100% preventable. This incident? This depresses us.

We take no joy in this crap boys and girls. What we wouldn't give that the entire site was rainbows and pretty flowers and pink ponies and everyone got along with everyone else and no one ever had to bitch about a boss or a politician or an incident or an arrest.

We don't live in that world. Neither do you.

We live and work in a cesspool of failure and political corruption the likes of Rome, Athens and the Founding Fathers never dreamed of. We exist in a system that is so fucked up, convicted criminals have more rights than those who are supposed to protect the decent, hard-working, tax paying citizens. We operate day to day with inadequate equipment, incompetent leadership, undermanned, over regulated, out-of-contract, under suspicion, mostly unappreciated and cynical beyond belief. The death spiral is getting tighter and moving faster.

Where do we go from here?

As I have posted before, the surrender white flag is coming close. Or the alternative is that there will be some kind of uprising or civil war in this country. The law abiding tax paying hard working citizens are getting a little tired of paying for the lazy, lame and dope infested waste of life, getting tired of tax increases for 40" plasma TV's in the county jail (I don't even own a 40: tv, wish I could) and all the other waste, kickbacks, bribes and money envelopes that the elected officials are pocketing.

SO I guess the question to everybody out there is: Are you a white flag raiser or a fighter? I think the time will soon come that you will have to decide.

I think that there is a conspiracy to blanket as many cops as bad as possible for some kind of take over of the police department. I not saying the feds are going to take it over but maybe a third party controlled by a group of people made up of the minority black community and also Hispanics seeking illegal aliens to be immuned from government harassment.

WHAT THE FUCK??? Why would you be more upset, why would you suddenly be able to speak english, why would you now demand answers just because the guy driving was the police? And he wasnt charged with left of center, he was charged with failing to reduce speed. So I guess AGAIN witness accounts are inaccurate! And what was the BAC of the dead driver? From what I hear there are witness accounts that HE WAS IN THE WRONG, not JA. Im sure the family is upset, and I do feel for them. But obviously their grief has turned into suspicion by goldstein and weinberg (attorneys at law) and they are already seeing $$$$$$ just another example of how we are under the microscope. JA is a good man, a better cop and now he is in the middle of a nightmare. Without offering any excuses, I say best of luck with this, JA. And I hope the truth comes out.

Police officers should not be charged with crimes the general public would not be charged with. Like Abbatte getting charged with felony aggravated battery when there was no "great bodily harm". But I also feel coppers should not get a break when they do something blatantly illegal. My heart breaks for the guy. I hope he is able to hold up through this horrible ordeal. Lets also remember there are two dead kids whose families will forever be devastated by this. Both channel 2 and 7 news said the officer hit the victim's car head on when he swerved into the wrong lane. But the video of the cars on the news showed the officer's SUV with front end damage and the victim's car with drivers side damage. Most of it from the drivers side back seat door to the drivers side rear end. Was it a head on collision or not? Anyone know?

Goodbye job, hello prison dear officer. And no, I don't feel a damn bit sorry for you. I feel sorry for the victims' families and I feel sorry for your family and friends for what you are now going to be putting your own family through. I hope you have no children to grow up knowing their father is a killer in prison. How did your last day EVER as a police officer feel? You'll never be one again.

There is no, "There but for the grace of God go I" here, because I'm not a drunk driver. But you are. Fuck you and your poor choices.

It's just like what has been said in the previous topic about DUIs on this blog. Appears the copper had the right of way, and it's also possible the driver of the other vehicle could have been under the influence also. But even if you're in the right, if you're DUI, you can still be wrong.
Don't drink and drive, boys and girls. We are slowly destroying what little credibility we have left in this city.

I think all of us will cringe after reading this story. Still, I think this problem or mind-set of,"it won't happen to me" is to prevalent in our society. Look at the bars on any given weekend night. How many potential DUI's are let loose on our streets and only make it home on luck? Our society even at times condones this behavior. Look at the Southside Irish Parade for one. Year after year, it's portrayed as a family event by the media when it's mostly a day of drunkeness and debauchery. Many of us in the community see this event as a day in which outsiders come into our community and reign disorder on our streets. Then we act surprised when these events occur. Unfortunately, no matter how many victim impact stories are told, tragic endings such as this recent incident will undoubtedly continue to occur. What's makes this so tragic is two young lives were taken and again it was "100%" preventable.

New York City Murder Rate Falling Fast
AL BAKER,
The New York Times
Posted: 2007-11-22 23:02:33

(Nov. 22) - New York City is on track to have fewer than 500 murders in 2007, by far the lowest amount in a 12-month period since reliable Police Department statistics became available in 1963.
But within the city’s official crime statistics is a perhaps even more striking figure: so far, with roughly half the killings analyzed, only 35 were found to be committed by strangers, a microscopic statistic in a city of 8.5 million.

What's it gonna take? Here's an idea. The song thats sung here with annoying frequency is how corrupt the city is, how every fucking thing that goes wrong is Daley's fault. When we took the job as a blue shirt, we were told what our duties and responsibilities were, we were told we'd deal with human garbage on a day to day basis. We all swore that we'd do the job. Now, we're all trying to redefine what our jobs are and how they're administrated. It's not your job. I dont believe anyone should remain in a position that makes them miserable. You only go around once in life, some people dont even get that. So if the job is so shitty, and the City is such a cesspool, what makes us stay. I've heard suggestions that coppers ought to be required to carry their own "errors and omissions" type of insurance coverage. I've heard people complain that the police ought to be required to undergo regular physicals and psychological assessments. Bitch all you want, it wasn't Daley that beat that bartender up, it wasn't Daley that phonied up the search warrant to roust the bar as 63rd St. It wasn't Daley that assigned Jerry Finnegan to SOS. Hey everyone fucks up, when Daley fucks up, the press is right there in his face.
The point being is that we all knew what the rules were when we took the job. You sound like a fucking fireman pissing and moaning because you cant call the wild cards after the cards are dealt.

It is a tragedy indeed that 2 young men had to die because of the stupidity of this off duty copper; and my sympathy goes out to the families.

Now I can only wonder how long will it take for the families to file lawsuits against the City of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department in relation to this accident.

It just behooves me that the city or the CPD should be held liable for the consequence of bad judgement of any ODPO.

Can somebody please enlighten me on this matter ????

What a year....SCC,I hope you don't think the phenomena of Chicago police fucking up is a new one. This kind of shit has been occurring through out the city's history. We are members of one of the most dysfunctional police departments in the US.Everyone knows about the now Capt.going to Indiana for a child prostitute about 14 years ago.How many of you remember his brother.who ran a citizen over, killing her and then left the scene???He turned himself in the next day(sobered up),the whole thing was pretty much blown off and he was promoted to Sgt.shortly after.Through out my career I've heard about rampant thievery, tons of "real"police who were planting dope on idiots on a daily basis and always the drunken antics of some. Most all of the thieves, dope planters, gun planters and drunks I've known on this sewer of a department are still here or happily retired.Quite a few have been promoted.I can't wait till I get to retire away from this bad joke.

News flash: the accident was not the copper's fault. Drinking or not drinking had nothing whatever to do with that accident. That driver #2 was charged with DUI is indeed unfortunate.

The car load of young upstanding Mexican-American citizens from Cicero cruising the side streets of Roscoe Village at 300am in the morning was the at fault vehicle.

Don't pile on and condemn that officer to a stretch in prison until you know the facts and facts are what is missing all too often on this blog.

I'm just wondering what did the ME found out about the toxicology test on both victims bodies. I feel sorry for their families, including John's, but the question is, did the victims had blood alcohol in their systems , too? Since they both lived in Cicero, what were they both doing in the Lakeview area at 2 am on thanksgiving day? Maybe just visiting a friend, coming home from work, or just left a party? Who really knows besides their friends / relatives who saw them right before the incident. May their souls rests in peace. But for the media keeps fucking with us (CPD), they (media) should do they homework and gather more info's on both sides. Stay strong John A. .. And hopefuly, we (CPD) should learn about this incident because we don't want to see any of us PO's getting hurt or going to jail for stupid mistake so the media fucks can sell their shit. I'm no rockit scientist..however, the media has already slanted it's reporting of the accident to appear as if the off-duty P.O. swerved and hit the other car head on. Therefore placing all the blame/fault on the officer.

I saw the scene on the news. From every angle it appears that the other vehicle turned directly in front of the off-duty P.O.s vehicle, therefor getting broad-sided. Officers vehicle damage is front-end only, the other vehicle is drivers-side only. It appears it was a T-bone collision. Did the other vehicle run a stop sign? As Damen (north/south) is the busier street and the officer was N/B according to the news stories.

What was the BAC of the other driver? Maybe he is totally or partially at fault. Yes, no, maybe?

It's easier for the media to attach the "police" label and determine fault that way!

Same as with the congressman asshat Davis incident!

11/23/2007 01:34:00 AM

Another "good" man whose conduct will be scrutinized by Jewish civil lawyers. Funny how you find a situation in which this off duty p.o. is clearly at least partly to blame and twist it into an anti-jewish posting. No wonder this department is so divided.

What is so frustrating about the J.A. situation, is that I worked with him so I know what kinda of guy he is. I was there when he was explaining the story and saw the evidence first hand. It was an accident, and the fault is still be determined. However my opinion of this man will not change, whatever the outcome. He's a great guy, was a good officer, and its a tragedy for all involved.

To 2:34 AM
What is just as heart breaking is that in a time were this whole city is against us, we have people like you, out there making comments like this. If this were your father, brother or best friend, I wonder if your feelings and comments would change. Of course, I am sure everyone you know must be a perfect as you, so you would never find yourself in this situation. Everyone has skeletons in their closet. I pray that when yours manifest themselves, there is someone shows you compassion, unlike what you have chosen to do.

I suspect you are not a PO. If you are (and I use the term loosely), you are nothing more than a guy who rides around pretending to be something he is not. I'm sure your the guy, real policemen would never want to work with.

I am not interested, nor will comment back to whatever reply you may have, if any. I have said what I came to say.

I pray for all involved, and their families. May God keep and comfort them in this time of tragedy.

I'd have no problem with your rant if Daley was ever HELD ACCOUNTABLE for all the corruption and blatant rip-offs of taxpayer money to grease the palms of all his friends and supporters.

When a police officer screws up, he's guaranteed to get twice the punishment any regular citizen would get AND the loss of his or her job and career.

If Joe the plumber crashes while he's DUI, his job title never gets printed and he can still be a plumber after serving his sentence, which will probably be probation. Not the case with the police. You make one mistake and your entire life is ruined. You're practically guaranteed to get jail time because the case is newsworthy and no judge wants to look soft on his sentencing since everyone is reading about it in the papers.

But thanks for your opinion anyway, counselor.

Look at the physical evidence.

Vehicle A has front end damage consistent with a direct impact with a relatively flat surface.

Vehicle B has massive Driver's Side damage consistent with a direct impact approximately matching the damage found on the front end of Vehicle A.

Disregarding, for the moment, any questions concerning the physical condition of the drivers of both vehicles, what do the damages on both vehicles lead one to conclude?

1) Vehicle A struck Vehicle B?

2) When Vehicle A struck Vehicle B, Vehicle A was moving in a forward direction?

3) When Vehicle A struck Vehicle B, Vehicle B's position, relative to Vehicle A, approximated a right angle?

4) Since Vehicle B was struck, by Vehicle A, on the Driver's Side, can we conclude that Vehicle B was, at the time of the impact, crossing the path of Vehicle A's forward motion?

5) Since Vehicle A has been reported to have been proceeding Northbound on Damen Ave., can we conclude that Vehicle B was either crossing Damen Ave, from the East side of Damen, moving in a Westbound direction OR making a Lefthand Turn, Southbound onto Damen, from the East side of Damen OR making a U-Turn, from facing or traveling Northbound on Damen to attempt to be traveling Southbound on Damen?

6) Can it be determined, from the evidence found at the scene, whether Vehicle A was, at the time of striking Vehicle B, traveling Northbound on Damen in the Northbound Lane OR in the Southbound Lane OR somewhere between lanes?

7) Can it be determined, from the evidence found at the scene, the precise sequence of events of the motions of these two vehicles?

8) Can any definitive conclusions be reached on the actions taken by the drivers of these two vehicles, said actions resulting in the collision which occured?

9) Can any conclusions be reached concerning whether or not any subsequent actions have been taken, or not taken, that are different, than the actions that would normally be taken, were both the drivers of Vehicle A and Vehicle B civilians?

10) Concerning the question of whether or not either, or both, drivers, of the vehicles involved in this accident, were impaired, in their respective abilities to safely operate a motor vehicle, can it be determined whether or not this accident would likely have occurred, based on the actions taken which led to the collision, regardless of whether either, or both, of the drivers were impaired?

All of the above questions are relevant to determining what actually happened.

The questions being posed by the media, regarding any suggested 'special treatment' of the driver of Vehicle A, are not directly relevant to determining how this accident physically occurred, nor especially relevant to determining who, if anyone, is at fault.

The only relevancy, of questions concerning alleged 'special treatment' provided to the driver of Vehicle A, might be if said 'special treatment' interfered with any efforts to determine the facts.

The P.O. does not have to go to the hospital cause he is not at fault. The crash scene proves the actions and the directions of the vehicles.

I know this is something people don't want to talk about in public, but where else is it possible to do it?

How about all the times you've pulled over a shit-faced off-duty PO and let him off the hook. Maybe you put him in cab or gave him a ride home if it was nearby, but you didn't even do a CR, much less a case report.

I know a kid who tells stories about all the time her dad, a PO, was pulled over when he was driving drunk and one of the above happened. Do you really think you're doing this guy, or the community, a favor? Maybe if this was an isolated incident and the first time the guy ever drank too much, but you're dreaming if you think that's the norm. The norm is that most drunk drivers are driving drunk frequently.

I haven't yet seen the news on this one, but I felt bad when it happened to Casper. I felt bad because of the probability that he'd been pulled over time after time and given a break, while he still had the opportunity to straighten up his life and keep his job. You CAN come back after a DUI if you haven't hurt anyone in the process. But more importantly, a person would still be alive and family wouldn't be grieving.

So think about that when you are considering giving an off-duty PO a break. Maybe stopping him from driving THAT night is solving the problem but it's only for one night. What about another night when he takes out a family driving home from grandma's house? Or he kills that kid he had in the car that night you let him go. Are you helping in the long run or our you helping keep someone with serious troubles stay on the road until someone is dead because of it?

This is really getting stupid, I still see coppers riding talking on their cell phones in squad cars w/o hand free attachments, I see coppers blowing stop signs and red lights for no other reason THEN I"M the police, I CAN do this, coppers still find a hole to pull into on the 1st watch, then when someone else bitch about getting stop,,,,,that I'm doing my job bullshit is the first thing that come out their mouths. Did someone say Rittenburg is lawyer for the family of one of the DOA's? Jesus H. Christ. There is an ambulance chaser if ever there was one.

Remember how long it took the CPD to authorize the Glock for duty use? Almost 20 goddam years after all other departments. Why? ADS Ivan Rittenburg, that's why. AKA Personal Injury Attorney Ivan Ritenburg.

Once upon a time, about 18 years ago or so, a PO had a Glock 19, one of the originals. The case for this pistol had a plastic post going through the center, a copper tried to put a loaded Glock away in this case and set a round off through the case and blew his finger off.

Enter ADS and PI Attorney Rittenburg who sued Glock for the newly 4 fingered copper. That suit kept the CPD from approving the Glock for a long time. Don't believe it? Ask some old time range officer if you can find one.

All that aside, why on earth are so many supposed police officers so damn quick to condemn Officer JA when all they know is what the news media feeds them? Haven't we all seen how the news media can slant a story to have an influence entirely different from what actually happened?

But here are all the holier than thou police, believing the news media reports and connecting the dots of "fatal accident" and "DUI off duty police officer" and assuming the copper is at fault.

He stayed right there and faced all the music and will continue to do so. The copper was not at fault in the accident and any DUI still has to be proven in court. Presumption of innocence, remember.

Procedure was followed, plenty of scrutiny was there from start to finish and the officer's rights were protected the same as anyone under investigation.

Bad behaviour is bad behaviour but not necessarily in this case. And yes, police officers and everyone else should learn to take cabs.

The public will learn when most beat cops start writing DUI's in droves on 1st and 3rd watch.

Next topic please....

Hey SCC

Here's a positive story you need to post. There was a shooting last night in Area One and a chase of the offenders ensued. For once the Bosses allowed the chase to continue and even an ADS was in on the festivities. Numerous Districts and Units were involved and the bad guys were taken into custody.

At the conclusion of the chase it was a sea of Blue, What a sight to behold. Brings back fond memories of when we were allowed to be the "Real Police". Hanging in the air was the stench of burning brake pads and engines. A scene taken right out of the Blue Brothers.

Can we please stop the criticizing and blaming and defamation of each other? We have all made a whopper mistake at some point in our life, and the point is to grow and learn from that mistake.

Can you imagine how much more difficult that must be when your mistake goes public? Top that off with your supposed brothers in blue publicly ridiculing you about your mistake.

The holidays are here, and sometimes this brings stress and sadness and depression to many. God help us if an officer in such a state of mind reads ugly and untrue comments about his self on this blog and gets pushed over the edge and eats his weapon.

This has happened before, where inexperienced police were giving an officer horrible advice about a frivilous law suit. He got so worked up into a frenzy of fear that he did himself and left a young wife with four small children.

Just asking that everyone keep in mind that we all hurt, and that we all matter to someone, even if it isn't you. Thanks.

How come you donr hear of firemen and lawyers killing people drunk?

#####################

Because most fatal dui accidents are only a passing story on the news or a small mention in the paper at best and then never brought up again. Someones profession really has nothing to do with it. If anything involves an off duty cop it is front page news and covered over and over again. Then the lawyers come crawling out of the sewers and try to figure some kind of angle to hold the city responsible. I didnt witness the incident but it wouldnt surprise me at all if the copper should have (or was) box 2, had a lower bac then the other driver, and is being railroaded by the media because of his profession. We are targets for them. Before taking this job, I was like most of the civilian population. I believed that the news was a true account of what was going on. I quickly found out that it is nothing more then half truths and spin for ratings.

at some point we have to realize that we can't always put ourselves in everyone else's shoes. there are bars filled with people from every walk of life who drink until they're loaded and either get into a car or do something stupid. we seem to take a lot of responsibility for not only other policemen's actions but for many other peoples. to yourself you need to pull away and see you are an individual and you need to stop sounding like it is time to throw yourself under a bus every time something happens. stop being so pissed off at every situation or thing thats said by someone, learn to roll with the punches and consider the source. The accident sucks, but unfortunately these things happen (not just us) all the time. as far as danny davis so what? its an opinion, and a weak one at that. there has always been and will always be a questioning of every action we take, if you're new get used to it and if you're not where have you been. as far as the media is concerned again who cares.
why do you watch/read? you know from experience that most of their stories are half assed and full of shit so you aren't missing anything. please take tomorrow off from the paper and the news i'll tell you whats going to happen.PETERSON IS MISSING, HUSBAND SHOWN WALKING TO GARBAGE WITH HOOD UP,THEN MUGGING TO THE CAMERA.WAR IN IRAQ,CAR BOMB EXPLODES IN MIDDLE EAST.HOLIDAY SHOPPING CONTINUES RETAILERS UNCERTAIN WHAT TO EXPECT.AN HONOR STUDENT SHOT LEAVING A PARTY,FAMILY CAN'T BELIEVE IT,"ITS JUST NOT RIGHT" MOTHER SAYS.WEATHER, IT'LL BE COLD WEAR YOUR LONG UNDERWEAR.SPORTS,WILL THE BEARS SUCK SUNDAY?, BULLS CAN'T NOT SUCK. THE COPPERS THAT WERE ON SCENE WERE ORDERED TO WRITE THE DUI FROM THE LT. EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE TO SUBSTANCIATE THE DUI. IF HE WAS DUI AND TWO PEOPLE WERE KILLED WHY WERENT RECKLESS HOMICIDE CHARGES APPROVED? THINK BEFORE YOU START POSTING NONSENSE. IT’S SAD, SO FUCKIN SAD TO READ SOME OF THESE POSTS!!!! LET’S SEE IF THESE TWO UNFORTUNATE SOULS HAD ANY ALCOHOL IN THERE SYSTEM. LETS SEE IF THEY EVEN HAD VALID D/L’S AND WHILE WERE AT IT LETS SEE IF THEY WERE EVEN HERE IN THE USA LEGALLY. THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS I WANT ANSWERED. READ THE A/R THE COPPER WAS CHARGED WITH FAILURE TO REDUCE SPEED AND DUI. NOT DRIVING LEFT OF CENTER AS THE SCUMTIMES REPORTS. A little rough, but if it can't be either/or then maybe you need to administer the self-test on alcohol abuse. Drinking/driving do not mix, period. What's so hard about understanding that? And if you find yourself making allowances about that rule, then maybe ya got a problem with alcohol. Period. If you're not sure, start asking the people around you.

The best part of the whole event was to see all the Officers smiling and joking. Every one on that scene was once again, if even for a brief moment, Proud to be the Police. Just remember boys and girls, it is a honorable profession, even if the media insists on beating us with the ugly stick.

Yes it was fun but should have been called off right away, there was a shooting in 009, they gave three different car descriptions, a car matching was pursued into numerous districts for almost 20 minutes, it is by the grace of God nobody was hurt, who cares if pookie shot pookie, had they run over a person or crashed it would have been a shit storm, there isn't any knowledge as of now if it was even involved or not. Not worth it anymore unless it's for another p.o ......

True Story about Rittenberg and the Glock.

When he was an ADS he was on the weapons committee at THE SAME TIME he was filing the law suit against Glock over that accidental discharge.

Of course, he couldn't say Glocks were safe for CPD officers to carry and represent a person who was injured by a Glock.

I guess it didn't matter that the NYPD (a much more conservative outfit than ours) OKd Glocks back in the early 90s.

Nothing like a true conflict of interest. But, this is Chicago.

DUI doesn't mean drunk. Two beers can be DUI, but by drunk it is generally meant to be wasted, falling down, slurred speech, poor reflexes etc. The PO was NONE of those drunk descriptions.

As for PO being left of center, he was swerving at the last second to try to get out of the way of the morons who blew through the stop sign right in front of him. Hell I'd be left of center too to try to avoid a broadside accident. I'd be on the damn sidewalk if I had to in a desperate attempt to avoid the collision or at least lessen the impact. PO did good there.

This one does not have any of the elements of other accidents where a driver was clearly way over the limit and clearly at fault and thus killed people. I doubt reckless homicide charges will be brought. The situation does not justify those charges.

Here's hoping the officer involved gets through this awful ordeal a lot wiser and is back out there on the street soon putting bad guys in cuffs.

He blew a point .03 for the admin portion. Declined on criminal. Three occupants of the other vehicle all blind drunk and ran a stop sign. Lt. from 019 said he was DUI & got the ball rolling. Even McNulty went along with it. Different standard for police. We're all fucked.
11/23/2007 02:34:00 PM

A BAC of .03 is not enough for a charge of DUI. Additional clues and signs of impairment are necessary. Did anyone perform a field sobreity test? Did the officer have HGN? I do not care what the bosses believe but in court, .03 alone is not enough to justify a DUI. At most, they might have the smell of alcoholic beverage on breath. If the officers were ordered to write a DUI, who will testify in court? Regarding his job, he will receive some punishment in this climate. Why didn't the media or department also mention that toxicology results for the decesaed driver is pending? Let the public know there are two sides to this story. Any qualified DUI lawyer will not have a problem with this case. .03 is a very slight BAC, possibly two beers so quit bashing him.

Officers, please don't drive if you've had even two beers. Get a cab, walk, whatever, stay at home and drink but please do not drink and drive.

The price to pay can be horrendous.

This is from a PO who has been sober since Reagan was president. I had my fill and have seen my share of fatal wrecks with liquor bottles and beer cans litering the crash scene. I am very lucky to have never been involved in one and never got DUI'd.

I couldn't handle alcohol and learned the hard way at age 30. I paid plenty. My drinking cost me a marriage, a house, custody of my children and lot's of heartache because all holidays I had after that were just visits with my children, at best, if it was my turn.

I was lucky, I didn't cause a death, the only people I hurt were my own family and myself. Drink if you want, I don't preach on drinking, have all you want, just please don't drive.

Man, I hate to do this, but here it goes. IF you haven't noticed by now, the media is out to get us. Just a couple of weeks ago channel 7 was outside Dugans looking to nail an odpo drinking and driving. WAKE UP PEOPLE!! If you drink and drive and kill someone you are going to prison, your fault or not. But even if the media wasn't out to get us this would still be the fact. You are a police officer and held to a higher standard than the general public. Remember the line in the Oath about "keeping your personal life unsullied."? For those of you who don't know what that means I will clarify it for you. It means that you don't have room to screw up because if you do you are going to get hammered (and I don't mean drunk)!! So a little advice from me to you. If you need to have more than a beer to unwind after work you better have a backup plan for getting home. Call a cab, Call a sober friend, Call the district and let them know that you are unfit to drive and beg the desk Sgt. to get you a ride home. DON'T DRIVE DRUNK!!!! You are supposed to be the best society has to offer. Heroes without fault, etc etc etc. We all know these are unobtainable goals, but we can be a little smarter than the average bear. Use your head. Put a couple bucks in your back pocket and don't buy that last round so you have funds to get home. Let's get our heads out of our collective asses and start acting like a band of brothers we propose to be. You midnight guys, if you know there is a cop bar on your beat try and be there at closing time. Help a brother out. Give him/her a ride home and get their car there too. If you are going out as a group, someone man up and bite the big one and don't drink that night and be the designated driver. Yeah I know it's a stretch but the life you might save by staying sober could be your best friends. This stuff is easy people. Use your heads. Think before you act. If you want the media and everyone else to leave us alone then how about not giving them so much ammo to get us with. This is all common sense. Unfortunately, common sense is not common on this job anymore.

Yes. These types of assholes do exist in the Dept. They exist in every career or field of work. But...they are far out numbered by those officers that I prefer to place focus. Those officers being the ones that go out everyday and do their job the best they can in every ghetto or family neighborhood this city has to offer. Tragic incidents like this are short of the numbers that belong to those incidents where officers put themselves in harms way for others or where they are doing the 'right' thing. All is not lost. With all the potential danger, tragedy, sadness, violence, and bullshit this job offers, most of us continue to go out there and do our job and do it well. STAY SAFE!

The dead driver was 100% at fault. And the dead driver has a BAC of 0.24 , 3 times the legal limit. I hope you are not really a copper, I hate to think we have such coward lying fucks in our ranks.

You know how many times I heard that when I was a kid? My grandfather used to tell us, if you're at home, asleep, nothing bad will every happen.

I tell that to my kids now. Even if you have a legitimate reason to be coming or going at the wee hours of the morning, 90% of everyone else on the road or street are trouble. Good advice then and good advice now.

A BAC of .03 is not enough for a charge of DUI. Additional clues and signs of impairment are necessary. Did anyone perform a field sobreity test? Did the officer have HGN?
-------------------------------------
YOU CAN DENY F.S. IF HE DID THEY REALLY WON'T EVEN HAVE MUCH OF A MISD. CASE. MOUTHWASH GIVES YOU A .01 ON THE BREATHALYZER. IF THEY SAY HIS EYES WERE RED...WAS IT SMOKEY WHERE HE WAS, WAS HE UPSET OVER THE CRASH. IF HE SEEMED DISORIENTATED...HE WAS INVOLVED IN A SERIOUS CRASH. IF THE OTHER DRIVER COMES BACK WITH A .08+ WAS HE REACHING FOR SOMETHING AND THE OTHER DRIVER TO DRUNK TO REACT QUICK ENOUGH, AND WAS HIS INTOXICATION INVOLVED IN THE CRASH? PEOPLE WHO DON'T SIT IN ON DUI CASES MAY SAY ITS NOT THE POINT BUT IT IS THE POINT. ALTHOUGH THE INITIAL INVESTIGATION SHOWS ONE WAY A COURT CASE MORE THAN LIKELY LEANS ANOTHER WAY. EITHER WAY DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, PAY ATTENTION TO DUI ACCIDENT THAT SOMEONE ELSE IS HANDLING AND LOOK AT THE HORRIBLE RESULTS. I'VE NEVER DRANK AND DRIVE AND SINCE I WAS A TEENAGER WE ALWAYS SET DESIGNATED DRIVERS AND NOW THAT I DO DUI'S I'M GLAD WE WERE SMART ENOUGH.

I feel for JA, and for all the "fuck him he deserves it for drinking himself stupid." comments, for what it's worth he blew way under the legal limit, so he hadn't drank himself stupid. remember it only takes a few beers in an hour to equal .08% so it wasn't like he was fall down drunk. And yes there but for the grace of god go I or anyone else, fuck you assholes who portray yourselves as better than that, maybe you have never driven while intoxicated, but I'm sure you've all done stupid illegal shit that could have resulted in bad things happening to you and your families.

You are as bad as the media. You bash the media but then you take their word as the truth and talk shit.
Grow up know it alls. You yappers are an embarassment to all of us.

Good luck to this young policeman. Sorry to the families involved in this situation. I don't know who did what, but I'm sure the facts will come out eventually.

So this is what can happen.

I have two beers. I'm driving and some wastoid blows a red a hits me and dies. I lose my job and go to prison when its not my fault and not legally drunk. I guess this can happen to me sober too now, no more fatal accidents for cops, or you go to jail. Thanks command staff, all you had to do was say he was sober.

11/23/2007 11:52:00 PM..........WOW.....this is some scenario. Are you saying that a sober person can be charged, convicted and sent to prison for DUI???Dude, this doesn't make an ounce of sense.Hope you're not the police.......

What gets me is people died here. Lets throw out the job titles. Bottom
line lives where taken and alcohol was involved. Maybe J>A> wasn't over the legal limit. But fact of the matter is you do not have to be over the legal limit to be impaired. Maybe his reaction time would have been better. Maybe if he would have just tapped his brakes a second earlier the impact would have been less.

CALLED OFF RIGHT AWAY? WHY? THE INFO WAS THAT THE PERSON/CAR WAS JUST USED IN A SHOOTING(BONIFIDE)...IT'S CALLED A BALANCING TEST - IF YOU CANNOT PURSUE FOR THAT - THEN THE CPD MAY JUST HAS WELL HAVE A NO CHASE FOR ANY REASON POLICY, OTHERWISE THERE ARE SITUATIONS WHEN IT SHOULD BE ALLOWED.....LIKE THIS ONE

To all my brothers and sisters...I have NEVER understood how one can get into a car and drive DUI....You have a decent job...used to be a good job. You are going out and know you are going to drink...then you will get into a 3,000-5,000 pound vehicle(piece of metal) and aim it in the direction that you think you reside...and "hope" nothing happens....I must ask you...WHAT ARE YOU THINKING???? I have been on this job 15+ years and I DO NOT DRINK...period! Let alone would I ever get into a car and drive after drinking...Do you understand that if you get convicted of DUI you WILL LOSE YOUR JOB??? and even worse if you kill someone...YOU WILL GO TO JAIL!!! How smart is that? We have all been to parties and seen officers drink to the point where they are falling down drunk and they get into their cars and drive!! How scary is that?? To know that they may be comming through your neighborhood and could kill or seriously injure your family member(s)!! But we NEVER think of that do we....we're the police...I have a family member that was killed by a DUI driver and I have NO TOLORANCE for drinking and driving...I don't feel sorry for anyone who jams themselves up...nobody told you to get shitfaced and then drive your car...you made that decision by YOURSELF...and when you get caught or kill someone...it's everyone elses' fault or "He's a good guy he just made a mistake"...Yes he probably is and yes he did. Bottom line here kids is that just like we tell the shitheads on the street..."Nobody made you do it...you did it" Same theory applies here folks...Feel sorry for the officers family and for the dead/injured citizens...they are the real victims. There is a rule about being intoxicated on/off duty it's Rule 15...you can be fired simply for violating that rule if the department wants to hang you badly enough...Use your brains...DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE...Especially in light of the recent events in the media...you "think" you will get a play if something goes bad or if you start blabbering at the mouth that you are the police in front of witnesses, firemen, paramedics and yes....even our own....You will get fucked....plain and simple. You will lose your house, marriage, kids, job etc...it is worth it? Hell NO! Take a fucking cab....Take the CTA...DON'T DRIVE....and if you do....then you are an asshole and whatever happens be prepared to suffer the consequences....you will be the one who will be sorry....but as in any case where a copper jams HIMSELF or HERSELF up....someone else is always the asshole right?? Never the copper. God Bless and have a happy Holiday season...Please DON'T DRINK and DRIVE!!!!!!

Numerous posts claim JA was a great cop, maybe he was. He was also an asshole driver, maybe he was driving too fast. I had a run in with JA as he attempted to pass my vehicle on the wrong side of the road when I was already driving 40 mph on my way to work. He pulls up next to me at a light and flashes his badge. That badge will not save him in his situation it was a tragedy waiting to happen. Please slow down people.

EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT THERE IT SOUNDS LIKE JA IS NOT THE AT FAULT VEHICLE, NOW LETS ASSUME BOYS AND GIRLS, JA HAD BEEN DRINKING AND HE DID NOT CAUSE THE ACCIDENT. THE FACT THE HE HAD ALCOHOL IN HIS SYSTEM DOES NOT CONSITUTE ENOUGH TO CHARGE WITH DUI, THERE ARE ALLOT OF FACTORS TO CONSIDER, APPEARANCE, WALKING, HGN AND WALKING TESTS. ALSO .003 IS NOT ENOUGH TO CONVICT ON A DUI IF HE DID NOT CAUSE THE ACCIDENT ONE THING THOUGH ALCOHOL DISAPATES FROM YOUR BODY AT A RATE OF .015 PER HOUR.
NO I DO NOT HAVE CLOUT BUT AND I HAVE WRITTEN THOUSANDS OF DUIS.

A typical 'the media made him do it' sort wrote:
"READ THE A/R THE COPPER WAS CHARGED WITH FAILURE TO REDUCE SPEED AND DUI. NOT DRIVING LEFT OF CENTER AS THE SCUMTIMES REPORTS."

The evil media reports what the police tell them. The police [35th Street] said he was LOC and DUI. Then when 'the media scum' try to get more info, like what kind of state the other guys were in, the official police spokespeople clam up, say 'it's still being investimigated,' or worse, refer you to Ms. Bondage, who, well, the less said the better. then when you try to get the real police to talk, they either say F-U, or say 'um, yeah, that's .. well, you should really call snoooze affairs.'

So, you have a piece of video and cops that either won't talk or are afriad to say too much, so what happens? you go and try to find people who will talk. simple as that. It's easy to say 'get all the facts, asswipes,' but not so easy when the facts are not forthcoming.

Go on, hate the media, call them names, go on believing whatever you want, but i tell you, your guys' department is your own worst enemy.

To the bean pole who typed this message in. The desk sgt is not overworked. It would not be a huge problem for the desk sgt to send a car over to drop of an odpo if they requested, but I forgot this is the Chicago Police Department and their motto is " Every person for them self". F@#k everyone else as long as my narcasistic ass is taken care of who cares about anything else. That is why this department sucks, because we do not know how to stick together. Not to mention everybody thinks that they are the only important person walking, wake up people if we do not begin to take care of each other, this department is screwed.

IN THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR DUTIES!!! Who is the dumbfuck? You aren't supposed to be talking on the cell phone with the waitress you're trying to bang, that exemption exists solely for the purpose of duty related information exchange!

Like every other traffic rule we are "allowed" to break ( how many of us have driven through red lights for no particular reason other than we can? ) and continue to openly flaunt it and think no one notices. THEY DO! And we continue to look like assholes because of it.

I am not a female hater on this job, but I'll be damned if 2/3 of the female officers I see in beat cars don't have a cell phone to their ear while driving.

Put it this way. If JA had .03 BAC why was he charged for DUI? Any alcohol = police are guilty. And if its fatal, you are going to jail. Does the post make more sense?

What I was getting at is this. .03 is not drunk. why the dui charge? I'll say this, its a dept fallback, if you have any alcohol in your system, then the ADS says "automatic dui". Point, the whole dept has to stop driving with any alcohol in thier system if this is how the command staff reacts as if we are guilty.
I was venting how the police get the guilty charge when zero of the facts are out, and the little I have heard makes me angry. I am the police, and you might even like me.

DUI was a refusal. Period. Refusal.

Any BAC on a breath machine was due to adminisrative proceedings and thus NOT admissable in court but the geniuses here have made the results of confidential internal administrative proceedings involving the rights of an accused police officer public knowledge.

Congratulations morons. One thing the old timers knew well. When to keep their mouths SHUT.

A pox on this blog. The shit that gets written here ought to be kept confidential, as it is it's open for public view. Imagine if a microphone were in your squad for 8 hours and the entire world could read the transcript or if the public had a radio channel wired directly into a police roll call room or locker room.

That is what is happening here and it is not doing our cause any damn good.

LISTEN UP SCC, cops need a place to vent but IT ISN'T IN PUBLIC!!!

Please take this damn blog private to verified CPD or retired CPD only.
