SCC Predictions
Once again in what is turning out to be a yearly event, SCC attempts (badly) to ascertain the future:
- Politics - Local - a continuing series of low level indictments. We've been hoping for more years than we've been running this blog that something big will break, but we are always disappointed. This year, we'll aim low.
- Politics - State - Someone big indicted. Blago or Mrs. Blago. And if the media did it's job, it will have a big impact on Obama's future as well.
- Politics - National and International - Hillary has already gone negative and it's cost her. Obama is running pretty well, but has too many skeletons if the media would just look for them. Edwards? Let's face it - the presidential race on BOTH sides is looking truly grim. Everything else? Same as 2007 - the more it changes, the more it stays the same.
- Sports - continuing mediocrity everywhere with the notable exception of the Blackhawks. With Bill Wirtz out of the picture and and the Hawks on free TV, we've seen our first consecutive sellouts in a few years or more. A few right moves and the Hawks are playoff bound like the old days and competing for the Cup in 3 years.
- Department - The Chinese proverb states "May you live in interesting times." Let's just say we're hoping for really really interesting this year from the new Supe and not so interesting changes as the SOS and other scandals wind down finally. Manpower continues to suffer.
- General - global warming continues to not impact anything except Al Gore's bottom line; the economy continues to chug along, never spectacular but not a massive downturn either; illegal immigration continues to drain resources; and no one really cares.

I can't believe you think the SOS shitstorm is "winding down". It's barely begun...wait till the G starts announcing charges. I predict mid summer at the earliest. They tend to take their sweet time.
I predict that Presidential candidate and US Congressman Ron Paul stuns the GOP by taking Vermont's primary and becoming a force to be reckoned with on the national level.
The US Dollar will continue to falter prompting further economic woes and financial instability on the market.

By chance- Was getting coffee and standing in line in front of me was a man from the Federal Building. After a short conversation he asked me if I ever worked in Gangs West or Special Operations. I also predict a run on moving boxes at OfficeMax and Office Depot. Suicide watch will comence of about 80% of the sworn personel at HQ. Those college boys and girls may just find out what its like to work a beat car beside that Closed Market stuff.
CPD will be rocked to the bone with developing scandals.
CPD exempt selections will shock some and impress many.

1. The new Superintendent will make massive changes. Some will be good, and others not so good, and most of us won't like them. Most of us will be very impressed by many of his command changes. No matter what, most of us will continue to do the good job that we always do.
2. Daley will not be indicted but Blagojevich will. If not this year than early 2009.
3. As much as I hate to say this, the Democrats will win the White House. Either Hillary or Obama will be our next president. The Republican field is unimpressive, and many people seem to want change. (I hope I am wrong because it will be a tough 4 years for the military, the police, and our country in general.)
4. Chicago will be one of the final 4 Olympic Candidates, but will loose to Rio in 2009.
5. Sox will be less than mediocre. Bulls and Bears average at best. Cubs will get to the playoffs, and loose in the second round. Blackhawks are on the rise. Packers and Brett Favre will upset the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

So let me get this straight . . . the argument is that Mayor Daley is taking all these trips abroad, wandering the globe like a milkweed puff, all expenses paid by his rich pals, in order to improve the image of the city abroad and help promote business?

Does anybody really believe that? Or should I say, does anybody who has ever spent time with Daley really believe that? Chicago's mayor may have transformed the city into heaven on earth -- at least in certain spots -- but in person he's an overbearing, charmless, abrupt man who couldn't sell tuna fish to cats. Awkward in his own skin, squirming, sputtering, uncomfortable, poorly spoken, vindictive, bored, florid, disheveled, mean -- really, this is the face that Chicago is projecting to the world?
At least gin up an excuse that makes sense -- he likes to be able to walk in public without people lunging to kiss his ring; Maggie likes to shop in Milan; he wants to relax in cities where he doesn't have to worry about being asked about his son Patrick's business dealings.
Something plausible.
But Richard M. Daley, Chicago's own Keebler elf, ringing the globe like Santa, bringing awareness of our great city to unwashed Parisians and unaware Berliners? That's a joke.

They just made a class in Aug, they only made 20 or 21 LTs. I don't think we are down that many.

My prediction for 2008 is that Jody Weiss will bring in at least three outsiders to fill exempt spots on the CPD, including the 1st Deputy Position. The Deputy Superintendent of Patrol will remain filled by a CPD insider. You can also bet that IAD will become much more innovative, muscular, and professional. IAD will be like a small version of the FBI. Self contained, proactive, and trend setting in the public corruption fighting arena! I am willing to bet that an assignment in IAD will be more prestigious than becoming a detective or scoring an assignment to Intelligence or Narcotics. I think an assignment to IAD will become a must have assignment for anyone seeking advancement in the CPD. Boy I wish I could return to the new and improved CPD!

Here is the situation. We are a group of guys in the fields of architecture, engineering, business management, the chicago pd, the chicago fd, and several other police and firemen from local burbs. Due to our busy schedules, we don't get out as much anymore, and well, we haven't partied in ages. The youngest of us being 24 and the oldest being 27 will be going out both on Jan 4 and Jan 5. We are looking for women who like to go out, have a good time and see where the night takes us. We will hit bars and clubs in Chicago, just haven't decided which ones. (So if you have an idea, please do tell) When we drink, we ar the fun kinda drunks buying rounds and playing drinking games. We are all single, but we do not care if you are or not. I want to personally thank every working blue shirt in the patrol division that made this possible. It is because of you that crime continues to drop. You are the true front line on the war on crime and the first and last line of defense for the the city and it's residents. We are the ones that prevent the rapes, robberies, murders, etc. in this city NOT all the specialized units.
I also want to wish every P.O. and their families a safe and happy New Year. For those who are lucky enough to be off tonight PLEASE be careful and use your head. If you had too much of a good time, please take a cab, bus or flag down another P.O., we'll find a way to get you home safely. Let's stop this media crusade in its tracks.

52 weeks - 5 weeks of vacation = 47 weeks
47 weeks X 5 day work week (between sat mid and the next sat midnight) = 235 days
235 days x .75 (sgts actually get 45 minutes which is 75% of an hour...) = 176.25 hours
You don't get the 45 minutes unless you actually work so if you take any extra time, you have even less time on the books...
Still a good thing even though most of the sgts I know don't get out exactly on time and actually earn their 45 minutes...
However, Sgts still need permission to take the time off- and because there are less of them....it's more difficult for them to get time off that it is for P.O.s.
Being a sgt is not what you think it is...

Too many pussies and political animals in top spots in 010 though.

my wish for the new year is that they make some more sergeant's. I can barely get time off to see my kids and am often the only sgt up on the watch. This is not right. What is the hold up. Put another class through already.
Are other sgt's experiencing the same thing across the city or is it just my district and watch? I'd love to know if i'm alone on this one.
They just made a class in Aug, they only made 20 or 21 LTs. I don't think we are down that many.

I predict pensions will be fully funded after several blow dryer mishaps
I'm a blue shirt and can realize that we are short sgts. The other day i asked for one and it took him seriously 45 minutes to get there. Not b/c he's lazy, but b/c there were only 2 out there that day and one was inside doing roll calls and the one assigned to me was on another sgt request. How much of an idiot do i feel like while i'm twiddling my thumbs for almost an hour waiting for him and these people are looking at me like WTF. I know the last class was only 50 or so. Make another damn class of like 100 so we'll have em for the summer. Because i really don't feel like getting beat up for 45 minutes while i wait for a tazer.

We ARE super short in my dist and from what i hear city wide and getting time off from my W/C is like pulling teeth. Plus all day long i'm riding from requests, and to domestics now, and to try to log everyone (we now have to see you instead of taking your word, thanks to you know who). I don't mean to complain, but just answering the guys question, you're not alone. I feel the same way. I can't wait to hear when they put another class through, just hoping we might get 1 more to help out on the watch.
Also, i'd like to say that i've never ever had as much fun on the job as i did when i was a blue shirt. That is where all the comroderie is and the goofing around and fun. I was truelly happy and laughed everyday at work. Now i drive around alone and don't really feel like one of the guys.
