Gun Buy Back Purchases...

...More Guns!

From Illinois Carry, this little story from July of 2007. How much of it is true and how much is embellishment, we don't know. For certain, the alleged $300 bonus and vacation day for each gun is an urban legend, and some of the gratuitous swipes at the cops working the "turn-in" are unwarranted. But they've got the before and after pictures or some seventeen pieces of crap guns and the seventeen $100 Visa cards, so it looks like it checks out:
  • He took all ten, including the starter pistol, as real guns. Not my problem that he gave us $100 for that starter pistol. He was just glad and happy I could show him empty cylinders, as he was initially taking about two or more minutes per gun to check them (until I started fumbling and sweeping) and there were lots of folks waiting outside.

They gave me my ten credit cards and thanked me profusely, falling all over themselves to tell me what a great thing I was doing and I reciprocated, encouraging them to do it again!. I stuffed the envelopes into my back pocket after folding them.

  • So, Guns Save Life ended up netting $1700 worth of MasterCards from the event. The club is in the process of selling some of the cards to members for cash and five of the cards are going to be spent at Darrell’s Custom Guns in Cayuga, IN for two CZ bolt-action .22s to be given away to two lucky kids participating in the NRA Youth Shooting Camp coming up over the first weekend in August. The rest of the money (and then some) will be spent purchasing ammo for the kids to use during the camp. The camp, located in Bloomington at Darnall’s, is the longest running NRA Youth Shooting Camp in the nation.
So at least $1,700 of the buy back money bought a few functional rifles (in Indiana) and quite a bit of ammo to train more responsible shooters. Good job.

Sounds like a plan well worth executing.

Maybe some sharp fellows will forgo a few arrests, just to 'unofficially' confiscate some of the can openers out there, to be cashed in at the next opportunity.

Or has this already been figured out and acted upon?

Why do people need more than one handgun? I've seen cops show up at jobs looking like Mexican bandits with numerous guns on their waistbands. Just train with one weapon, master it. The cant is different on each makers weapon. Hunting rifles should be kept at the lodge.

Heard on several occasions that vintage weapons are unfortunately having to be disposed of. Saw several turned in guns, when being checked by make/model/serial number, being valued at a couple thousand dollars....minus the duct tape on the grip.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. It's the savage pullng the trigger that everybody should be outraged at, not gun stores or gun makers. Why doesnt the courts actually prosecute cases and sentence offenders properly. What kind of message is our judicial system sending out. The wrong kind I tell ya!

You must be a civilain for asking about one weapon. Always carry a backup..In the event there is a malfunction or misfire during a shoot out. There is no time to fix it. The second reason is one I hope no officer ever encounters.. Being Disarmed. That is why we carry a back up weapon.. And the Third and final reason to carry a back up weapon.. BECAUSE I CAN!.. So go blow smoke up some liberals A%& you twit.

Ever see The Onion Field? Or read the book? That's why every cop should carry a secondary.

And events like that happen over and over.

That being said, if someone's carrying his secondary in plain view then he's an idiot.

My FTO, God bless Santoro's soul, admonished me for having my hand in my coat pocket while we handled a tense domestic disturbance. Once back in the squad with a 1- Frank; I smiled and from that pocket I pulled out my snub. From that day forward he was confident that I had his back on every job

If you properly maintain your duty weapon, you should not have problems with it. Don't carry a smith or a berretta, they can jam very easy. I've seen PO's show up at the range with green ammo, and guess what .it don't shoot. How many of you out there change your ammo or even shoot on a regular basis?

My little brother, not the police, turned in 2 broken single shot shotguns that were given to him and used the $$$ to buy a nice scope for his rifle.
Brought a tear to my eye.
Still cracks me up!!

If you don't understand why a cop would carry multiple firearms you obviously haven't done much shooting.

It's a life saver for reasons already mentioned. Another reason albiet a rare circumstance is once in awhile you get a bad round that has not enough or no powder and the bullet partially goes in to the barrel. In a firefight you're not going to have time to deal with a situation like that so you better have a back up.

Another reason is to have adequate dropping power (45 ACP or greater).

Some Departmints use 9mm as service whepons and many times it doesn't take down the threat.

Respectfully,
DW

Full ammo load of how much?

How many in your squad?

How deep was your foxhole? How high were your sandbags?

Rules of engagement were?

You're a fucking asshole to try to compare a soldier in a fixed and fortified emplacement with a high powered weapon and a free fire zone around him and further fixed emplacements to withdraw to and artillery back up and armored vehicles and helicopter gunship 3 minutes out.

Idiot
