Royko's Ghost

From someone using the name "Royko's Ghost," truer words were never spoken:
  • Funny thing is, if the Sun-Times were to do a complete 180, print the many things their reporters' researches have discovered over the years, and that the editors have suppressed, they just might save their business.

Because, I'm sure that there's been a mountain-sized amount of verifiable dirt dug up on all the usual suspects, more than enough to make the Sun-Times the most popular paper in town.

Apparently, those in charge would rather have the paper go bankrupt, than to use what they've got to keep it afloat.

It's not like reporting the truth has been a priority for them, but, it may not be too late for that to change.

All they would have to do is print what they've chosen not to print in the past.

    If they had the balls.
Has anyone at the Slum Times (or even the Trib) even tried to take a fine tooth comb to some of the stuff that goes on in our comments section? Once you filter out all of the BS, you end up with some real gems of scandal regarding the political shenanigans in this town. And we're just a bunch of dumb coppers running a free website.

Imagine if there were real investigative reporters with the time and backing of their editors to expose hundreds of millions of dollars worth of waste in the Chicago Machine. We've pointed out the store rooms full of books and computers in the CPS. Our readers have pointed out the strange connections between Fleet Management and "connected" salvage yards. How about the City's Hearing Officers which are just quasi-legal means to steal money? Or the CTA which can't even exist without massive cash subsidies funneled in from around the state?

Once in a while, you see flashes of the old fashioned, hard hitting reporting that used to be a hallmark of Chicago journalism; Hired Truck; Family Secrets; the arrest last Friday of a couple of reverends swindling the County out of a few million bucks.

But nowadays? They put Mope-rah on the editorial board, give her a stage for her cult of victimhood, make nice with the "ministers" who are supporting gangsters over the rule of law and then they wonder why circulation, subscriptions and ad revenues are down.

"Royko's a Ghost"? Ya mean there's not going to be any booze left in the afterlife? I hope that j*goff
doesn't drink red wine........

Speaking of "ghosts", these so-called investigative reporters should find out just how many Coppers are working out there & answering calls. I remember showing up for work one day 12 years ago and they had so many bodies on the watch, they asked me to work plain clothes on an o clout car.(fat chance today ya think?)
Hey chuckie(ch 7); Im not worried

The real problem with today's reporters is that they are house mouses that think they can be completely informed of a situation by sitting at the internet. The old reporters hit the street like old gumshoes. The old reporters had confidential informants and City Hall insiders, many being paid cash to leak information. These new reporters think that whatever they need to complete a story or investigation can be gathered from within an office.

Second reason: Today's reporters, no matter local or national don't want to print negative information about powerful people or elected officials because their invitations to all the free lavish parties will immediately dry up. They want to sit on Air Force One with the President, they want to be at the downtown Mayoral parties. In the old days, you weren't friends with the people you were writing about nor hung out with them.

Number 3: The worse one of all. Political Correctness. In order to really tell the news, to really express the problems, race, gender and sexual preferences have to be incorporated into the story to fully explain certain on-going problems and situations. But no current media outlet will touch such hot points.

And last but not least, elected officials got smart over the years. They have managed to put friends of their in key editorial positions in the media. Look how many former City spokespersons now hold high paying private media positions. Also the days of cash envelopes haven't stopped but many payoffs are trade and barters that are very hard to trace down. From lucrative real estate deals hidden beneath 3,4 5 or 6 layers of bullshit corporates. Millions if not billions are being stolen in the form of real estate deals and other contract ventures. Every where you look within a 5 mile radius of downtown, THOUSANDS of new condos and new homes, many with values of 1/2 million dollars or more are being built. In a era where homes aren't even selling, who is buying these thousands of 1/2 million dollar residences that are being built on land the contractors got at pennies on the dollars? Who are the real investors. Rumors flew that prior to Phil Cline spending MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in police services to clean up the westside that a group of politicians along with a selected inside group of exempt rank officers did a buying frenzy. Buying vacant lots for almost nothing. Then the the City spent millions to clean up the area and the police department spent millions in added police and enforcement to bring many of these former shit neighborhoods and factory wastelands to 1/2 million dollar vacant lots that they bought for a thousand dollars.

This inside information along with the ability to use an unlimited number of our tax dollars to aid in making you a thousand times return on your dollar is more than criminal, it stole millions maybe a billion dollars of the citizens' money to profit themselves.

Remember, you keep a 100 you find on the ground after chasing a dope dealer, well your going to the slammer. They make millions off us, they get promoted, they get gold braid pensions, they get the pot of gold at the end of the Irish rainbow.

The corruption in this City eats more than 50% of the revenue it takes in. Criminal cases are fixed for the connected or they aren't even charged. Mayor Daley's brother forced every rent-a-truck scandal owner to buy their truck insurance from his insurance firm. Imagine that, EVERY TRUCK IN THE HIRE TRUCK MILLION DOLLAR RIP OFF was insured by the Mayor's brother's insurance company. To this day, Mayor Daley refuses to release who hired the boss of the hired truck scandal, Mr. TORRES. Daley's nephew making millions off the police pension, Daely's own son making big cash off city contracts by hiding his name under a bullshit investment corporation. Ron Huberman programs the 911 computer center and when he leaves retains the rights to the computer programing with a hefty contract to oversee the future of the computers and then also gets a big fat CTA President salary.

No need for me to go on. I have hundred more stories with the years I have been around. I come from a police family with a total of about 100 years of my family policing Chicago.

If the Feds wanted Daley, they could of had him a 100 times over. But they don't. All of the US Presidents know that taking down a powerful Chicago Mayor, a Mayor that controls a giant portion of the US budget, would be terrible for the economy and send Chicago to what Gary, IN and Detroit, MI is.

If you wanted to lock up ANY Alderman, just send a citizen into any Alderman's office and request a zoning change. If you don't think that there still is an envelope needed for a zoning change, well go back to the Land of OZ where everything is legit.

Good Luck and Good Night.

Someone grabbing an unauthorized hour or two at the end, dogging a job or various other high school crap doesn't compare to the Billions stolen over the tenure of Daley's run at the helm. Cops misbehaving are easy headlines. Lasting change is made by jailing politicians.

Fahey Flynn, Mike Royko... now I know I'm old. Seriously though, if you have HBO, watch the Wire. Best show ever put out and don't say to yourself, "I see enough of that shit every day". Give it a try. Last season. I for one am sorry to see it go.

Your 100% right SCC! What about burkes hired truck connected scandal with 20+ trucks and his friend "petey", what about the girl running O'hare expansion she was only a small secretary to victor reyes (Why is he not in jail) who has no skills except for taking victors shoes to get shined and his suits to the cleaners,. She makes 200K+ per year plus car and drivers, and bought all new vehicles to ferry out the connected to look at the job sites. How many friends mostly from indiana are working as laborers while the people in Chicago cannot find work? just for openers!

Royko was great.

You are either not the police or too young to remember Royko. He exposed alot about old man Daley, but was very good to our current mayor when he both States Attorney and a new mayor. Royko was no friend of ours and wrote many negative columns about the Chicago Police.

This punishment by unproven and proven false CR numbers will poison this department.

The contract prevents the department from suspending or firing PO's for these BS CR numbers; but, it doesn't stop the department from banning PO's from units or putting PO's in behavior programs.

The FOP's refusal to address this issue has been their biggest failure.

The elected officials are the new mob or mafia. Anything that they approve or hand out has a "street tax" on it, pure and simple. The whole reason why the connected people keep getting the goods is simple, you only take bribes, kickbacks and favors from people you know.

Royko was a jagoff and friends of nobdy. But actually that is what made him so good at his job. He wasn't afraid to write about anybody or tell it lile it is. You can hate him personally but you have to respect his writings. It took balls to write about the very heavy people he did. And the man would still sit in the downtown bars and drink without giving a shit the ones he wrote about were all around. One tough son-of-a-bitch, like it or not!

Red wine? Nah, Mike Royko was always a beer and scotch guy, as far as I ever read.

Speaking of which, I just finished reading Ciccone's biography of Royko, at the same time this final season of The Wire is airing. I think the first question you've got to ask about the papers is, do they even have enough reporters to dig into these stories? Newspaper staffs have been dwindling for almost thirty years. Who's left to do the digging, and who's left to show the new kids out of J-school how to do it right?

Sure, the downfall of ex-congressman (and Hinsdale native) Duke Cunningham was started by investigative reporters at the San Diego Union-Tribune. But they're privately held, something the Sun-Times and Tribune (at least until recently) haven't been in a generation. Does rocking the boat work for or against people that have to answer to shareholders?

Yeah, that investigating needs to be done. I'm just not sure the conditions have existed to allow it. I'll cross my fingers for the Trib under its new ownership...

Our newspapers are useless. Take the Miegs field scandal. Why was the airfield torn up at midnight. Who is paying to turn it into a dainty flower garden? How have we replaced the income that was produced by the taxes that Miegs generated? Questions, questions, questions? Our news media is afraid to ask these questions.

P.S. Royko was a violent drunk and a boring writer.

I won't argue about the first part of your comment, but the last part is gonna get me both drunk and violent.

Just wait 'till your time comes, bucko, and you'll see how drunkenly violent, or violently drunk I can get.

That is, if you end up in the same place where I am.

Take a guess where that place is.

(Maybe me and Slats can do a double team on your ass.)

BORING!!???

Da Boss never called me boring.
