SCC Endorsements

Someone has been bugging us for political endorsements as of late. We're flattered that anyone would think our opinion of politicians important enough to actually take direction from us.

We're of the opinion that everyone should form their own opinions. We read everything we can lay our hand on or pull up on a computer screen and form judgments based on those items. Most of our votes (obviously) trend rightward. That makes it an awfully short day in the voting booth for us as most times - there aren't any republicans running for anything in this town.

We have a habit, though, taught to us by coppers far older and wiser than we are. It's been used a few times to get rid of a few particularly irksome judges back in the day. It goes like this:
  • Vote "NO" on every single judge up for retention
Because every single "NO" note forces the judge to get about three more "YES" votes to be retained. Granted, if there are too many vacancies, the Chief Judge will just appoint more judges to fill up the spots, even some of those judges that just lost. But it makes the Chicago Machine work harder and the Machine hates to work. So get every one of your friends, every member of your families, every single person eligible, living or dead, to vote "NO" if you can.

Other than that, anything that shakes up the order is a good vote.

Note: We don't know if Judge William O'Malley is up for retention or on the ballot at all. After his ruling Friday, we'd break our streak to throw him a "YES" if we had to.

I can't totally agree with you SCC...I've spent my share of time in court and have seen a few very good and and some more than competent judges. If anyone knows personally of a good judge, then don't be afraid to vote YES.

BUT, if you don't know for sure if a judge is worth keeping, follow my simple advice: When in doubt THROW THEM OUT!

"Granted, if there are too many vacancies, the Chief Judge will just appoint more judges to fill up the spots, even some of those judges that just lost."

Yes, but the gain here is that each and every judgeship that is officially 'vacant' is now up for election in the next cycle.

Just as in any other elected office, legislative or executive, the judicial branch elected positions will, in due course, be up for election.

To displace long term incumbent judges may seem like a bad idea, if you haven't had to deal with the court in a long time.

Those who have, know why voting to not retain most every judge up for retention is a really, really good idea.

Great!!! Let's all get together and vote out the judge that let the Hatch girls free. Yeah, right. We tried that and failed miserably. I forgot that all we do is bitch and whine on this message board but really never take any action. Got to go, have to finish growing my bad mustache, drink a case of beer, eat a double king-size burrito (with a diet coke), smoke a pack a cigarettes, ignore my fat-pig wife, clean my four guns and then call in on the medical.

If all "13,000" of us voted we could at least have some small influence on the local elections. For as much time as it takes you to read this blog you couldve voted. I havent missed an election since I could vote.

SCC,

I've been doing the same thing for years. The whole idea of this phony retention ballot is so sickening. If you can be elected judge in Crook County, then you are there for life. No one ever fails to get retained, except Passarrella (spelling?) a couple decades ago. Today's judges could squeeze out a turd in the middle of the courtroom during a jury trial and they would still be retained. It's truly revolting.

P.S. We could use cameras in courtrooms in Illinois. Shed a little light on these goofs.

I suspect very few cops would vote RP unless they were seriously unware of his policies.

Eliminating the already lost war on drugs would reduce the need for policing, and thus police offciers by a LOT. Maybe 50% or more.

He would also be hell on cops who abuse mere citizens.

It's called 'HAVE NO DOUBT, VOTE INCUMBENTS OUT'.

Here's the one thing I never understood about Judge retention criteria:

How is that retention is predicated on receiving 60% in the booth?

As I see it, that's a "D". And how is it that a judge that gets 60% or 61% is good to go, but somebody who only gets 59% somehow bolos and is deemed "unqualified"?

If nothing else, raise the minimum to 70%. At least that's a "C".

1/21/2008 06:43:00 PM

One problem with your strategy.

The machine doesn't elect judges any more.

What elects judges is: (1) an Irish name, and (2) a female name.

If you're lucky enough to have both, you won the genetic lottery, and get the job. It doesn't matter who the machine endorses. The machine has little influence on the election of judges, and spends little money or time on it. The Judges are pretty much on their own, whether or not they get endorsed.

Somebody like Ed Burke has enough clout to convince other people not to run against his wife, but that's rare these days (and whatever you say about Burke, his wife's a nice lady, and a good judge anyway.) As a female with a name like Burke, she'd probably win anyway.

Why? Because, unlike most people, the Irish always vote, and usually vote for their own, and our girls are kinda hot under the collar about the equal rights thing.

Don't like it? Then register, vote and vote for your own. That's they way you get ahead in this country.

The Cook County States attorney race is shaping up as a big gift to Howard Brookins. If Brookins gets most black support, as expected, the rest of them will split what's left. That means Brookins likely will win and face off against Peraica. The highest law enforcement office in Cook County and we will probably have a choice between two people neither of which are suitable for the job.

"Eliminating the already lost war on drugs would reduce the need for policing, and thus police officers by a LOT. Maybe 50% or more."

Not likely.

What do you think all these miscreants are gonna do for income, once the drug money dries up?

Get a job at Kinkos?

They'll revert back to the old standards of criminals, so they'll be plenty for law enforcement officers to do, no need to worry about job security.

If anything, there won't be enough cops, since citizens have come to expect cops to be personal bodyguards and will likely demand more police, once the inevitable increase in 'natural' crimes begins to rise.

With the 'War On Drugs' using up so many tax and police resources, it's a wonder that 'ordinary' crime rates aren't higher.

There will always be a need for a certain ratio of law enforcement officers to population.

It's the bloated ratio of politicians, and their patronage hires and contractors, to population that's the real problem.

Guys, guys, guys, listen.

1. Acevedo was not endorsed because he's an upstanding citizen or a great copper. He was endorsed because he votes the right way on police issues in Springfield. Can you say the same for your State rep? Doubtful.

2. His altercation was with one P.O. only. He did not lay hands on the P.O. No one was injured. Haven't we all heard about/experienced horror stories involving the downtown pound.

3. There is absolutely no way Ed Ecevedo beat anyone up in Florida unless it was one of the Seven Dwarfs. Acevedo is 110 lbs. dripping wet, at best.

4. Tell us all who ran against Acevedo that should have been endorsed. You can't even do it.

Adios.

2. His altercation was with one P.O. only. He did not lay hands on the P.O. No one was injured.

The one P.O. he had the altercation with was twice his size. If no one got hurt why did he (Acevedo)request and ambulance, after he found out he was going into 001. The P.O. along with 2 midnight sgts were dragged to federal court twice before Acevedo lost. He was ignorant to all P.O.s involved. As far as the horror stories about the downtown pound, it is not run by the police dept, but by streets and san. Pay your fine and appeal like the rest of us. Finally if he was endorsed because " he votes the right way on police issues in Springfield", then they should have put an asterisk after his name denoting, he disrespects his fellow P.O.s but vote for the piece of shit anyway.

2. I know a retiree that has had both liver AND kidney transplants. He now has cancer and is in chemo. He has not reached his lifetime limit. That said, name the "several" PO's that you claim to know about that have "run out of insurance" you piece of shit. You can't do it.
3. The City has never declared that no city employee will have insurance in 2013 as you claim, you fucking liar. If I am wrong, please explain exactly which city official made the statement and when/where is was made. You can't do it because you are spreading misinformation and lies.
4. Cut the union hating bullshit scare tactics and try being part of the solution. The FOP discovered the City's insufficient contributions 3 years ago and their hard work has caused $27 million to be refunded to retirees thus far. So, go eat shit.

Ariba, ariba!!

On the subject of Re. Acevedo, I must say that I side with the FOP. By far, the most important subject for us in Springfield is our underfunded pension fund. Rep. Acevedo is in that fund, just like you. You may not like the the guy, but he's not going to ever vote for a reduced pension or any rollback of our benefits. Sometimes we all got to take a bite of the shit sandwich, muchachos. That's politics.

If you are able to, VOTE for Jim Capparelli. He's a southwest side guy who has military experience and experience in the State's Attorney's Office (Not Cook County). He's a down to earth guy and is definitely PRO POLICE (something we need).

Will he help us? He will get a nice pension from his crew in springfield anyway. Does he get a double pension?

Acevedo is a drunken POS! Yes, he is a little twerp, not much to him, but his brother MANNY more than makes up for Eddie's lack of girth!!
To answer one poster's question, OF COURSE ACEVEDO WILL DRAW TWO PENSIONS...why the f**k do you think he wanted to become a State Rep? Do you think he really enjoys the job that much when he did NEXT TO NOTHING as a Chicago Patrolman?
Personally, I would vote for Jim Caparelli over Lapinski's ignorant
professor son from out of state ANYTIME. "CAP doesn't answer to e-mail?" Do you think Lapinski personally does that? HA!
Old man Brookins is a large cut above the kid, who has basically rode his daddy's coattails into office (much like a certain southside commander!). Don't waste your time on Brookins. Vote Alvarez! It truly IS time for a change at the ASA's office.

It's not that easy. It may help, but ... I know a woman named Siobhan Murphy. How much more Irish can you possibly get? Nice lady, and AFAIK competent lawyer. She ran for judge twice and got nowhere.

Just a Civilian

Man, our FOP endorsements are f***d up. Couple days ago I read on another part of this blog that Mary Kay Moore is running for judge in the 6th subcircuit. I know her. Had a jury trial with her back in the days she was in Gang Crimes. She was awesome. Knows what's shes doing. Been an ASA for something like 20 years. Worked her way up the ranks to be some sort of Chief in the SAO. Husband is a copper too. You'd think for sure our union would have endorsed her. Not only did we not endorse her but the one we did (I checked with a lawyer friend of mine) is some chick that's only been out of law school like 2-3 years. Just what we need. Another judge on the bench that doesn't know what they're doing. Don't our union reps check this shit out?

P.S. If you live in the 6th subcircuit vote for Mary Kay Moore. She's definitely on our side.
