FOP Election

Well, we've just been handed a campaign flyer from a group calling itself the "Independent Candidates for Change." Independence is a good thing we suppose. Then we started reading the thing. And we came across this little paragraph:
  • They [the citywide team] have utilized what has become known as the propaganda organ of the FOP - the www.SecondCityCop.blogspot.com and have smeared the officers and lied about what actions have been taken.
Propaganda organ? Wow. We very rarely touch on FOP issues here - they just don't generate that much interest. Back when two individuals were being expelled from the FOP, it wasn't for running against the incumbent team; it was for publishing restricted documents on the old Second City Cop Network bulletin board run by a 025 District sergeant. They tried to cloud the issue on this blog and no one cared. Now at least one of them is fronting this "independent" slate in another attempt to get back at the current board. And they're trying to drag us into it by calling us a propaganda organ?

Here's a clue. We've criticized FOP when they've been behind the curve. We've taken them to task for not being quick enough on issues we think they ought to have been on top of. They can hold all the press conferences in the world, but they can't force the Chicago media to cover it.

Someone was begging us for info on the election in the comments, looking for someone to vote for. We tried to stay out of the fray as we've done with other elections, like the Pension Board. But if the "ICC" wants to drag us in, we'll play along. Here's some food for thought:
  • Three candidates for president. The ICC candidate (Jans) has admitted ON THIS VERY WEBSITE that he writes coppers parking tickets. And if the head of your ticket admits to writing coppers why would you trust anyone he has with him? And if you read their mailing, they take the side of a lawyer that was fired for incompetence over fellow police officers. As we pointed out earlier, the third candidate is a bodyguard for aldercreature Burke.
  • Two candidates for Second VP - One (Al Jag) refuses to sign a sworn affidavit alleging wrong doing by the president of the union, yet will tell anyone who listens that he has evidence to back up said charges. Then why not sign the affidavit? It's required by union by-laws.
Let's look at a few of their trustee candidates:
  • Kenny Pollack? He's the retired nutjob who at the last national convention, while dressed in full FOP regalia, uses a wheel chair to get to the front of the line to board an airplane, then jumps up and runs ahead of pregnant women and families to secure a seat when boarding is announced. Real classy.
  • Chester Hornowski? He's the guy who got in big trouble for photographing and harassing an aldercreature's opponent while in uniform, on company time, out of district, in a CPD squadrol attempting to get her to drop out of the race, even making job offers to get her to drop out. The aldercreature he was alleged to have been working for? Dick Mell, father-in-law to the governor.
  • Bob Podgorny and Harold Brown? Podgorny headed the last Nolan Team contract that got voted down by a 3 to 1 margin and propelled the current regime to power. Following an audit by the new administration, Podgorny was found to have spent $43,000 on food, $16,000 on travel, and $3,000 on automobile expenses. Harold Brown as trustee APPROVED each and every one of these expenditures by Podgorny.
And those are just the most egregious examples we can cite. We're sure there are lots more.

Our more astute readers will be able to glean which candidates we won't be voting for, and anyone else who appears on any literature with the above named "un-endorsed" persons also won't be receiving our votes.

We will again decline to endorse any specific candidates and encourage everyone to do their own research, ask their own questions and go to meetings to get answers. It's kind of sad that barely seventy people are running for office in an organization that has some 10,000 members. What's even sadder is the quality of people over at the "ICC" trying to drag us into a fight we had no interest in joining.

PS: the FOP dislikes us intensely. They never return our e-mails, have ripped us in the newsletter and at meetings for being a "bathroom wall." What part of "not the FOP" do you not get JT?

You have to be out of your mind to talk crazy about the SCC. You could ruin it for the other people running with your team.

Well, its like this: Politics was meant to be a temporary thing. Unions are politics. Look at how our city is run; this guys been in power about 15 years too long.
When this Country was born, men were expected to leave their pos-
itions(Soldiers,lawyers,blacksmiths
constables, etc)serve in the Goverment for a few years, then go back to their careers.
W/that,seems its time for the current(union) regime to get back to a squad car and reclaim their "roots".
If Im going after murderers,career
bangers/dealers w/political clout,
I'll take a "Marko", a JF, or some
other malcontent over a "Im by the book" anyday.
Having read SCC's post: what do we have on this K.C.J. guy, well he wrote a Copper a parker. He might not be the right guy to do a search
warrant with; but he might be the right guy to manage our union dues
and to challege the whore regime
downtown. Ive met him(KCJ), your
not going to bribe this guy!
Just my observations.........

already voted and stuck with the current regime. only played around with the trustees a little. anybody who has been around awhile knows that the city will give what it wants to give to cpd, cfd, etc... the union can grandstand and say we are going to get this or that but in the end we get what the city wants to give us period.

Union politics reflects local politics and vice versa.

How else does the public/political machine keep it's thumb firmly on it's 'employees', as in city and county unionized workers, if not by infecting each and every union with the same patronage-like, buddy-system, special-treatment for the 'connected' mentality?

It's actually not that bad a ratio, 70:10,000, compared to public 'servant' elections.

Not that there seems to be much of a difference between tweedle dee, tweedle dum and tweedle dumber.

Bull. You read the comments lately? We let damn near anything go. And we've let plenty of anti-FOP stuff go. The trouble is no one cares.

We are a reader driven blog. Someone sends us a letter, we often post it. Someone points us to a police link or funny article, we dress it up and make it fun. Something lights up the comment section like a Christmas tree and we'll make an entire post out of the event.

So as soon as you post some of your "dirt" and we get anyone except WH interested in commenting on its veracity, we'll be sure to put it up on the front page.

BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter/fspielman@ suntimes.com
Police Supt. Jody Weis met privately with a handful of black ministers on Monday to begin to re-establish trust between citizens and police hit by allegations of excessive force and a scandal in the disbanded Special Operations Section.

Those in attendance said Weis promised to promote more minority officers, re-double efforts to recruit African Americans and order sensitivity training.

The new superintendent also talked about addressing black congregations at Sunday church services and broadening a pilot program that saw ministers and community leaders address police roll calls to suggest ways to bridge the gap between citizens and police.

The ministers came away impressed with Weis. What impressed them most is the fact that Weis and members of his new team handed out their cell phone numbers.

"That's a totally different mindset than anything that's ever taken place before," said the Rev. Walter Johnson of Wayman A.M.E. Church.

The Rev. Marshall Hatch, chairman of the Leaders Network, said Weis is an "impressive guy." But, Hatch said, Weis needs to order "swift and severe reprimands" for all levels of police misconduct, including verbal abuse.

"Independent Candidates for Change"

Well doesn't that sound like some liberal bullshit? Perhaps that works for the Obama minions that faint over the words "hope" and "change", but never tells us exactly how he'll effect this change... most likely by throwing money at problems and raising taxes... but that's best left for another discussion.

I'm not the police, and my only interest in the FOP is some of the contract issues that will be applied to me, but I can see the fallacy in calling SCC a propaganda organ of the FOP.

But in typical lib-tard fashion, they speak before they think. I guess you can look at it this way SCC; they don't read the blog, and new readers will see the lie.

Will the detectives let us know what is going to happen in the FOP elections please!

I have been a patrolman for 15 years. I have been an FOP rep in the past. If you think that for 1 minute that the patrolmen have a voice you’re NUTS!!!

WE DON’T VOTE!!! I guarantee that 80-90% of all retirees will vote. Detectives casting votes will be about 70-80% .Patrolmen will be about 50%. The 50% that doesn’t vote will do 80% of all the bitching!!!!!

The FOP should post who voted in the elections. You can go down to city hall and its public record if you have voted in the last election, why not the same thing for us!!!

There really is no worthwhile choice in the FOP elections. So, whose fault is this? Do we expect some worthy person to hear the higher calling and miraculously run for office and be our saviour?

WE run for office, WE are eligible if we go to 5 meetings the previous year (goofy rule) and less than 100 of US qualified to even run for office.

Less than 100 out of more than 12,000 active officers care enough to run for office. That is shameful.

Don't ever blame the FOP if you don't like the contract, working conditions etc. No way, not when less than 100 care enough to even go to the minimum number of meetings to run for office.

We get what we get because so few of us give a fuck. This isn't going to change for us like magic. It will take hard work and that heavy lifting will fall on the younger guys.

We old timers have had our turns, you young officers, step up to the plate and start getting organized NOW so that in three years time you can field a complete slate of competent candidates for FOP office.

If not, the same shit will happen in three years time with no one running worth voting for and no one cares enough to work hard for change.

All it takes for us to continue to get screwed is for the majority of police officers to continue to do nothing.

My apologies to Mr. Edmund Burke (not the alderman but the Irish philosopher) for stealing some of his words.

Apparently the quality or life issues where not a issue to the current leadership. Any info about Doherty who is running for President? FYI:
This is from the FOP Update email.
Just passing on information. I don't for one minuet think that the timing of this injunction is coincidental.

"On February 21, 2008, our FOP in-house lawyers secured an injunction against the City of Chicago in our ongoing lawsuit to force the City to comply with the Fair Labor Standards Acts (“FLSA”). This injunction has to do with your use of FLSA compensatory time. Here are the highlights: First, the City has been ordered to revise its time due slips and have new slips in use by March 31, 2008. The injunction will take effect the following day. When an officer requests to use FLSA comp time, the City must grant any request made so long as the request is made no less than 48 hours prior to the shift for which the time off is requested. If the Department decides that a replacement sworn member is needed, the Department must seek a replacement worker. Officers requesting FLSA time off may propose names of replacement workers and the Department must consider those individuals."

A 21st century union is a business. Like any business, the leaders of a union exist to enrich themselves by charging fees (dues=income) and reducing expenses (grievances, negotiations, member welafare services=expenses.)

Some union leadership positions are sought by sincere individuals who genuinely seek to help the membership. These are simple and naive folks who think they can make a difference. God bless them but they never get much done and eventually leave in frustration.

The remainder of those who seek leadership positions do it solely for personal enrichment and/or lust for power. They never rock the boat in a way that will infuriate the employer because they know the employer will someday pay them back with personal favors.

That's why a union will never grieve anything that is important, and it will never fight for anything that truly matters. Membership who rely on a 21st century union get less benefits than employees who are not represented by a union.

Jans and Jaglowski are nut jobs. I don’t know all of the people on their ticket but if they are running with those two all I can say is birds of a feather! Two candidates for trustee are trying to double-dip. Steve Robbins gets a salary from working at the pension board and Duckhorn gets a stipend from being our Rep to the State Lodge in addition to his pension.

But what does that leave us with the whole city-wide team? None of the top five will lose. But more than half of the trustees are useless. The Jans group wants you to vote independent. So do that just don’t vote for them either. If you really want to shake up the board don’t vote for either the do nothing trustees and the goof ticket. All of the power is in the top five anyway! A good rule is if you would not work a beat car with any of the aforementioned jerks why would you vote for them to represent you? AND CAN YOUR VOTE BE BOUGHT BY JUST A VINYL BOOK COVER?

Take five minutes and take the two flyers you got in the mail and if you really want to vote independent don’t vote for those P.O.’s on either list unless you know them personally. Try some of these names. At least they show up all the time.

Micheal Bober
Fernando Flores
Bob Fujara
Rick King
Peter Larcher
Thomas Lonergan
Kevin McNulty
Tim Moriarty
John Owens
Donald Richardson
John Stajcic

How can some one represent you if the only show up when it suits them? Stay safe.

Things take time, especially when dealing with the city. that being said, i do wish the FOP would allow us to vote on 12 hr shifts and see what WE think. Be nice to at least put that to a vote. So while i dont agree 100% with everything they do and there is room for improvement, I would say that overall they have done some good things. Im willing to give them another few yrs to see what comes of it. Remeber though, the grass isnt always greener and when dealing with coppers many just cant be pleased.

I voted and mailed the ballot last week. I could not vote for anyone running for president of FOP. Donahue has fumbled the ball. Doherty is a scam artist, records show he is assigned to 018, detailed to 001 but he shows up at city hall as one of Eddie Burke's flunkies. The third party is just a pile of idiots. I Xed out all three and wrote NONE in the box.

What a shame this is all we got,

*********************************

A woman raped by a Chicago police sergeant tentatively settled a federal lawsuit against the City of Chicago for more than $1million, sources said Tuesday.

John Herman, 42, was sentenced last month to 25 years in prison by a Cook County Criminal Court judge who found him guilty of aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping and official misconduct. DNA evidence tied him to the 2004 sexual assault. He contended the sex was consensual.

Dear Mark is this the best you could come up with? How did you pick these people:

Isn’t Trevino retiring next year and moving out of state? That’s not a rumor we heard it right from his mouth. Did we not vote Rhonda Bullock (aka box of rocks) out of office four years ago? Why is she back on the ticket? And what does Derrick Armstrong bring to the table? Why are these three on the ticket?

Darrin Bourret and Tom McDonagh have any brain waves there? Talk about the male equivalent of the Stepford Wives! Did Mike Garza take care of the little problem at his AAA meetings? And didn’t Joe Butney make an ass out himself, the lodge, and you last year in Louisville? Maybe if he would have shown up the day before he would have know what to wear to the caucus. Or so I have been told! Is it true that your team spent almost no time on the convention floor only the unit reps showed up?

Didn’t Ron Shogren and Tom Skelly die like ten years ago? Did you stuff them and just wheel them around at meetings? And doesn’t Pat Duckhorn already get a stipend for being our Rep to the state lodge on top of his pension? Or does he need a little extra money for bad cigars that he like to blow in the face of women?

Has Tim Fallon filed a case report for his lost personality? Oh that’s right he never had one. Maybe he could go to an E.& R. P. S. auction and buy one. He could take Kenny Watt and he could buy one too!

And talk about the ICC ticket!! Jans and Jagnuts? Brown, Pollack, and Hornowski for trustee? Give me a break! With 13,500 members on this Department is this the best we could come up with? Vote independent. Just not for the above imbeciles.

VOTE NO for Sue Ryan for FOP trustee...... Do nothing clout person who will NOT be on our side!!!!!!

2/25/2008 10:15:00 PM

regarding this previous post...is this the same person that was Molloy's secretary and made meritorious detective from a totally administrative postion??

Yah this is the same Sue Ryan that worked for Molloy in 008 thru Unit 112. A couple months before Molloy pulled the plug he sent his personal secretary Sue Ryan over to the intelligence section doing investigations. This is the same Sue Ryan that once worked downtown in the CAPS admin office and felt her clout was so heavy she could tell the administrative Lt. to basically fuck himself in front of the unit, When taken to Molloy this Lt. was told "HANDS OFF" by Molloy. This is also the same Sue Ryan who, when 35th went into panic mode last year disobeyed a direct order from 1st Dep Starks and her commanding officer to don the uniform and report to the main hall downstairs. Instead, she plainly said to her commanding officer "Fuck that, my dog's in the car and I'm leaving" and then promptly left the building.

And yes, this is the same Sue Ryan that was given Molloy's car when he went on furlo and had the balls to actully park the car in his #5 Spot up front as a D/S.

So, NO votes should be cast towards another fuck you I'm clout girl who's flaunted her personal relationship with a connected moron all her career. Now that her boy is gone, her career should get sent back to where it was headed before some putz took a personal interest in her ass. Nowhere

Oh well, just shoot back another witty zinger with a line from Ghostbusters or something instead. That'll teach me.

Another FOP candidate spouts venom when challenged. Ho hum, well, just go along and you'll get along. After all, things are getting better and better, aren't they? Oh, by the way Ignoramus, here's something to whisper into Jody's ear when you're rubbing his tummy: it's not Martha's Vineyard - that's an island with one town -Vineyard Haven (pop under 3,000.)

I notice that you failed to name a city, too. So I guess I was right.

P.S. Your epidermis is showing.

The only one on that list I can absolutely vouch for is Rick King. If it is Rich King, the Dog Police. If so, he would be GREAT!!!

2/27/2008 01:03:00 AM

Are you kidding. Rick King is only out for his self. If you give him a chance he will tell you about the best policeman ever him. Why dose a guy with 31 years on run for office. And what dose having a son on the job make him qualified for trutee. He is also friends with an sgt trustee that is leaving the board. Do not vote for him.

OK, Cookie Monster. Throwing a tantrum is a really appropriate way to behave, don't you think? Unfortunately, some ignorant fuckers (like you) look up to tantrum throwing idiots. How big a waise do you need to stop the tantwums, widdle baby?

Nice way to support a guy who works with you.
Oh, excuse us princess, he doesn't have any stripes for you to blow for 2 on the end.

It's called "false light" slander and it's actionable.
2/27/2008 10:05:00 PM

"False Light" requires some type of false (or at least misleading) statement and also has a stipulation of being reasonable and with malice. Speculation is not automatically a malicious statement of fact and as a member of the fop, it is reasonable to question, and challenge monetary concerns. As far as being actionable, it is far from it. Any attempt would be a waste of our funds, but that doesnt seem to bother you eh. You might want to bury your head in the sand and never question anything and hope for the best, but don't expect the rest of us to as well.
Rather then just simply posting that they were paid for privately, you have resorted to name calling and threats of suing. A very professional response indeed, frivolously sue a member (bully tactic) for questioning how our money might be being spent. I doubt the citywide team wants your type of help as your defending them the way you are is making them look bad by association.

I'll take a jailhouse lawyer over a crackerjack box law degree any day.

I said I would absolutely vote for Rich King. I've known him over 20 yrs. He's an upstanding guy. He showed up. He backed up. He never backed down. He's not a liar, he's not a thief, he's not a dog(although he loves dog's) and he did it all without bitching and moaning. I never heard him blow his own horn and if he's doing it now, he should because he should have been promoted many, many times and wasn't. He is still here and running for office probably because he loves this job and police and wants to help. I wasn't NOT endorsing any of the others. I just don't know any of them. Maybe one or two, just to see them but not personally and it's not a personality contest this is serious business that will literally affect us for the rest of our lives.

Hey jackass,

You have no idea what the fuck you are talking about. You seem to think that because the posts only infer or insinuate that Citywide used dues money for campaign materials, it is not slander. Well, little fella, I'm here to set you straight. It's called "false light" slander and it's actionable. When you get your law degree, fold it in half and shove it up YOUR keester, you jailhouse lawyer

Maybe you can use that settlement money to pay off the credit card you used for the "magnet" bill.
Sue another cop for slander, what a STROKE!!! Really makes you want to vote for them.

I hope FOP can and will reign in whoever that is. "YOU FUCKER......" I hope you realize that for all the good FOP has done, how much damage you just did with that crazed, lunatic rant. Go back and read it. I swear all the time but I don't represent the interest's of 10,000 men and women. FOP, you need to get on this blog right away and apologize or distance yourself or something. email SCC so SCC knows that it's an authentic blog. Folks are pissed off that was WAY too crazy a reaction over a harmless remark about a magnet. I don't care if he said "used our $" or whatever. You ought to be used to that kind of thing by now. I'm still going to vote for you. If I ever get my ballot straightened out, but many won't now over this.

Been reading and I am amused by the suggestion in this thread that Citywide guys should just shut up and swallow false allegations of financial improprieties. Would you?

I am also amused by the guy who keeps challenging people to come up with cities where PO's make more money and have better benefits. Some of you have attacked him, but none of you have answered. Looks like he's probably right.

I know I am going to give my vote for Paul Niezabitowski for trustee. I worked with him in the 009th District. He is a good guy thats for the troops.

2/26/2008 11:29:00 PM

I worked Special last Tuesday and the guys in 701 said the saw him taking down other people's posters. Is that a good guy? Sounds like he's more for himself. And I’ve known that guy in 701 for 15 years. We were in the same homeroom. It sounds more like he self promoting with bogus endorsements from fictitious ex partners.

If someone accused me of stealing, I'd do a whole lot more than just rant and use four letter words. Your integrity is all you have. I will protect mine and admire those who protect theirs. Turning the other cheek here would let a liar go unchallenged. Like you, I could do without the swear words, but i do understand why they were used.

Oh, that's brilliant.

Save that vote for the next election and you can vote twice, is that the idea?

The only thoroughly wasted vote is the vote you do not cast.

Grow up. People have been accusing FOP of using money for bullshit since the beginning of time. A magnet! give me a break! He didn't accuse him personally of stealing. you people can twist and turn a sentence into anything. and listen to you. you fucking eggheads all saying you aren't even going to vote! Quit! Please. Were you here for some of the Horrendous FOPs we have had? You are always on here crying and moaning about the FOP in there now. I don't even go to meetings. I don't worry anymore. I used to go in years past to make sure they weren't trying to "sneak nothin' past". A lot of cops went for that reason. Bitch, bitch, bitch about retirees benefits. That retiree is you. Fight for the retiree benefits, even if you're not there yet, it sure comes up fast. Fuck this ridiculous magnet fight. When Dineen stole your money, you done knew you been stole on.

Ok, in the interest of moving on, THERE IS NO INDICATION WHATSOEVER THAT THE MAGNETS WERE PURCHASED WITH FOP FUNDS. The original post was not an acusation, just common everyday bitching (the kind that a lot of us do when we discuss things like this). Sorry for causing all this mess when there are far more important issues out there.

I'll pose a couple of questions to all of you who don't think the FOP does anything for the working copper. I'll close with a statement.

Why do you suppose that the City is attempting to get back everything regarding discipline that the FOP was able to secure from an arbitrator in the last contract? This statement/question is based on fact. Read the City's proposal on disciplinary issues for this contract. I have. They are on the FOP website if you'll take the time to look.

Have any of you ever spoken to POs in other jurisdictions who don't have any legal defense benefits without having to purchase them for themselves? I have. Some of them who chose not to have lost homes or gone so deeply in debt to pay attorneys that they may never recover. The measley 426 we spend yearly is worth it for the legal defense benefits alone.

I don't think any of the incumbents would disagree that there is always room for improvement, but their track record shows just that. Improvement every year. They have accomplished more for the membership than any of their predecessors. This is an opinion, but it is an educated opinion. I was around for the others, some of whom are trying to get back in. God save us if they do.

OK. So I was the one who asked where the funds came from. Was I wrong to question where my dues go since they are not publicly posted? It would have been very simple if the "magnets" would have said "paid for by the CITY WIDE TEAM". Anyways, I think the whole issue of a slander suit really pissed some people off. How many times do we get "slandered" on the street and all we can do is smile in return. It reality, it brings up an issue of trust with a union that threatens us with law suits on issues that we deal with everyday. Who can we really trust? Makes the brotherhood feel, once again, its us against them(FOP included). I dont doubt that the FOP helps us out in certain occassions, but this is just plain stupid. A simple question that could have been answered with a professionial reply got blown out of proportion. This blog was designed for that purpose. If the FOP feels that a civil suit of slander will make the rest of organization feel justified, then by all means. GIVE ME A BREAK. I just hope you guys use all that energy to file suits against all those POs who really were in the right and file suit against those who really desrve it. We are one team. We are Chicagos Finest!

The officers with wiskers can remember the past. The FOP regime in office now has placed all the cards on the table. Every board meeting is open to the membership, requests from FOP for members interested in working on committees is open, the phone lines and doors open constantly. Anytime a member has been involved in a shooting or serious accident FOP has been there to support the member.
Members do you remember when the city was making plans to futher damage our health insuranc, and the FOP supplied a bus at each Area and guess what 125 FOP members showed up to fight and protest against the City, Yes only 125 of you but yet you expect the FOP to do back flips for you when you show no personal interest. It takes each and every member to be supportive of this organization. This FOP board has been the best in many years. Instead of complaining throw your hat into the ring, come to the meetings learn the process and understand what is all about.
Perhaps most of you don't understand if the FOP had not put together such good evidence during negotiations on the last contract the abitrator would most likely have favored the City but he did not. This FOP board has done a Great Job and Wish Them The Best.
