Raised Morale?

We've noticed a disturbing trend in the comments:
  • Interest in the 12 hour day is high
  • Interest in any alternative that gets rid of the sixth day is higher
  • Numerous people are claiming that this is the best thing to happen to the Department in years and J-Fed truly has the pulse of the regular beat cops
What exactly has the new guy accomplished?
  • He's attended one graduation where he pretty much parroted the company line.
  • He's made one proposal that will take YEARS to implement
  • He may have (emphasis on "may have") cut his office staff from 14 down to 9
No one has been demoted. No heads of Bureaus have been moved. No promotions or hirings have taken place. Yet there is an undercurrent of irrational exuberance all of the sudden in our comments sections and our visits are topping 6,000 per day for three days straight.

We're as eager as anyone to see what change J-Fed can implement. We certainly hope it's for the better. But we need to give this at least 6 months to get a feel for what's going on. Change in this Department takes time. Often, it takes way too much time. Molasses in January moves faster than this Department embracing change. Glaciers often outdistance the pace of change here. Look at what they did to the weapon order last year. And that was in the works for more than a few years that we know of.

Let's wait and see what the actual first change is before we crown J-Fed the greatest thing since sliced bread. Proposed changes are nothing more than "same old, same old" from City management.

JFed has carte blanche and can get this department back on track and with high morale again. He is going to get us the 12 hour work day and he is going to lead us from the front.

No more sorry ass losers and excuse driven fatass exempts blowing smoke up our asses. This Superintendent is all business and he wants results, that is why he started with his feet firmly planted on the ground. He is listening to his troops and he will deliver.

12 hour work days NOW!

Maybe the excitement about the new guy has something to do with the fact that he actually seems sincere, which is a refreshing change of pace from the usual smarminess that emanates from the upper echelon of this department. The fact that he is articulate also sets him apart. It appears that he does want to try to fix what ails this screwed-up department without rushing in so quickly that he loses sight of the whole picture. I'm willing to bet that he is smart enough to develop a cohesive game plan over time as opposed to implementing the usual knee-jerk decisions. What can be wrong with giving the troops a morale boost in the meantime? When was the last time that happened?

2 off
make up the lost time with paid 30 min lunch
stress levels would drop dramatically

12 hour days are insane
there is no way to reduce stress
when you work 12 hrs a day.
You need the extra day off just to sleep.
Can you imagine if you worked a busy district, 008 007 006 004 010 011 etc?!
As a patrol officer, beat car, while not on assignment you're suppose to be driving around your beat. Does that mean if you don't have any jobs on your beat you would be driving a veh for over 8 hours? You're going to have to start keeping a log like the truck drivers.

At first, I was hopeful that positive change would be pending, now - not so sure. The Bosses have gone into overdrive trying to look like their bureaus look great and riding J-Feds' leg. Inspectors are writing up non existant violations [perceived stubble, not beard w/o a card], IAD is recommending 10 days for everything from failure to notify medical, to court deviations and advance notice to unit commanders allows that "little too candid" officer to be sent on a hospital guard detail relief prior to his arrival. Not a good time to be a worker who still tried to do positive work when allowed to do so. Then again, I'm not too sure that it ever was in my 19 years looking back.

A big sorry to all you guys and gals who told me I was foolish to try and make a differance in the city. You were right, I was wrong and the painful part is not that you were correct. The time/effort I wasted while trying to "Serve and Protect" is forever lost.

HELLO SCC,

Well looks like SNEED is on to something. She has indicated that the top echelon of the Chicago Police Department's senior staff are on their way out the door. As I predicted Supt. Weiss would have to almost completely clear out the senior staff to move the department forward. I still stand by my original statement that Charles Williams is going to land on his feet. You guys/gals can be sure that in three years the CPD will be a remarkable, cutting edge, professionalized law enforcement agency. I have also heard that the Maywood Police Department is looking at bringing on an outside consultant who recently retired from the US Department of Justice. Get ready for an exciting ride. Guys/Gals if you want your career to progress apply to IAD. I envy you guys/gals because you will be plank owners in a dramatic turnaround of a major law enforcement agency. If you are lucky enough to be one of the chosen few to enter the new IAD you will work with various federal agencies and conduct complex investigations using cutting edge techniques. Stay safe and GOD Bless the CPD

In talknig with the other coppers about j-fed's wearing the uniform, some po's absolutely are giving a strong visceral thumbs down.. but that's just their initial gut reaction. I think we have to give him the chance to identify with being a chicago copper...part of that is putting on the costume...so be it, let's not be so harsh or hasty. In a real sense it's all of our job's to be his FTO and get him to understand our world...in time he may,I hope, develope that "police persona" that we all did, (and we didn't come on the job with, if you remember) Let's stay positive and stop the hating on each other...Finally, I think the home team is about to be tested by crisis as never before and not of our doing, I have faith that we'll make people say again "thank god for the Chicago Police Dept." Stay safe my brothers and sisters.

I think just the fact that JFed might do to this Department what most of us wanted over the past 15 years will boost morale. Get rid of the political hacks, actually listen to us. BIG CITY COPPER SAYS......

I cant believe how foolish all the coppers are acting regarding the 12 hour day... be aware of the mayor attempting to bring the olympics here..If you don't believe that every officer and I mean EVERY offcier will be working 12 hour days when the olympics get here you are a fool. Once that happens wont have to pay the overtime because we will already be on 12 hour days. ALSO, has anyone thought about teh overtime being cut down. waht about the FLSA, there will be more manpower on the street workign 12 hour days and also bear in mind that the DEPARTMENT determines the starting times for watches. You don't think taht afternoons will start @ 1500-0300 and 1600-0400. The only great shift will be the 0500-1700 hour start (yeah right) how much time will the bid be?? for all you less than 10 year guys that think this is GREAT!! I'm all for a new scedule but be AWARE of the bullshit scam they are trying to pull, i worked 10's in burbs before i got here been here 18 years. And for all you guys that work the old side job you actually think you will be able to schedule the side gig, yeah sure you will on your extra 3 days off, and in the mean time your babysitter will love to cover your new work schedule hours. THIS IS THE CITY'S ANSWER TO CUT THE OVERTIME & COURT TIME, I don't work the side jobs anymore its easier to work the o.t. on a late arrest and court @ $40.00 hour than the old 20.00 an hour part time job oh but they pay cash BIG DEAL get another arrest they're there for the taking.

Oh, I agree that something is gonna happen here, but I disagree that we are going to do much about it. Times have changed, we are neither feared nor respected. For example, take the dem convention: Coppers being coppers, getting it done. If that happens now, with the cellaphone cameras and the revvs? Coppers fleeing home to make sure that thier families are safe. No one wants to be sued or shown on the news defending the liberal jackasses that constitute this city. This city has sewn the seeds: fear of suit, pandering to the revvs and the jobless, and enough of the oldtimers are gone that it is just about time that the city reap what it has sewn.Hell, kids on the street yell F-U police. NEVER would have happend even 10 years ago. But we all know that its an easy payday for them if we try to do something about it. Congratualtions. You have the most apathetic dept in the nation. I"m off to a caps meeting. Yea!

Take AIRHART situation for instance; J Feds organization (the fed) left him on a floor to die while they (the fed)negotiated with the asshole who shot him. A Chicago Police Officer would have never left a fellow officer down and would have never retreated from the condo after exchanging shots with the bad guy. But the Feds who planned the whole thing out did just that. They ran when the shit hit the fan. It is a fucking insult to all Police Officers when he wears OUR uniform!
