Cameras a Waste in SF

First, the red light cameras in Dallas are being shut down at an increasing rate as people adjust their driving habits. Now, a study finds they don't even work in San Francisco:
  • San Francisco's 68 controversial anti-crime cameras haven't deterred criminals from committing assaults, sex offenses or robberies - and they've only moved homicides down the block, according to a new report from UC Berkeley.

Researchers found that nonviolent thefts dropped by 22 percent within 100 feet of the cameras, but the devices had no effect on burglaries or car theft. And they've had no effect on violent crime.

Mayor Gavin Newsom called the report "conclusively inconclusive" on Thursday but said he still wants to install more cameras around the city because they make residents feel safer.

They make people "feel safer"? Until that knife or bullet really hits you we guess. But he'll keep spending tax payer's money.

As long as cameras take money from the citizens, and give it to his campaign contributors, Richie will keep them.

I guess the cameras did what they were suppose to do; stop motorists from running red lights. Maybe if we had that here Daley will get around to putting up cameras at stop signs, now there is a cash cow waiting to happen.

People who "feel safer" without actually being so are excellent victims.

Well atleast they have a union that fights for them. They will be the highest paid police in the nation, they work 4/10's, and they also can retire with 90% of their pension after 30 years. Im sure it can be difficult to work there, but there is no way it can be worse than here!!

What would happen if someone was caught by a red light camera..say..three times. They paid their ticket each time..now that same vehicle is involved in an accident causing the death of another driver. Do you think the family could sue the city given that the city was aware of the reckless driving habits and simply turned a blind eye...minus the income of course? If I were an attorney I couldn't type my subpoenas fast enough!

I think the Mayor should set up a large number of cameras in the loop. I've never seen more people run lights anywhere than the folks driving downtown! The Mayor would be awash in $$ in no time. Might even drive a taxicab company or two out of business on those $90 fines, and God knows we have more taxi companies here than we need.

"What would happen if someone was caught by a camera...."

I bet you were one of those guys in the academy who would ask "What if....." when the instructor was ready to cut the class early.

It's a waste of money. They don't work. It only give the public a false sense of security. I'd rather have the public on their toes, watching each others backs. People and the media are really buying into the idea of all these cpd pole camera's. the criminals either move around the corner to do the deed or like we've all seen, they do the crime right smack underneath the camera and no arrest is ever made based on the camera being there.

fuck the camera's. we need more police hired. and oh yeah, a fucking contract!

Besides the primary purpose of these cameras, that purpose being to distribute the taxpayers' dollars to those 'friendly' to the mayor and his minions, in such a way as to appear to be of benefit to those taxpayers, AND the secondary purpose, re the 'red light' cameras, being to raise revenue from a select, and barely publicly acceptable, target group, AND an additional purpose, re dash board cameras, for the sole purpose of discouraging actual police work being done in those areas where actual police work is most needed, the collective purpose of these cameras is to get the public accustomed to accepting, as a natural and proper daily experience, the role of government as big brother, baby sitter, and the source of safety.

Either the communist dictators never figured out how to so thoroughly brain wash their citizens, or, their citizens were made of such stern stuff that only bloody murder could suppress their natural inclination to smell bullshit when it's being shoved up their noses.

Apparently, we have lost not only our sense of smell, but also our aversion to having objects shoved up our asses.

And I thought that the fudge-packers were supposed to make up, at most, only 10% of the population.

You know this from your readings of 'holy scripture' and your in-depth personal experience.

As you are a self-proclaimed 'born-again' fudge-packer, Jesus wouldn't approve of your 'mano a mano' activities then.

Butt you already knew that.
