On Friday, May 9th, Mike went to the prison infirmary at North Central Correctional Facility complaining of sickness and a pain in his lower right abdomen. The nurse merely gave Mike a laxative and told him that nothing was wrong with him.
On May 13th, Mike's appendix burst and another prison nurse had him transported to the local hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Antibiotics failed to cure the infection.
Today, the Mette Family was notified that Mike will undergo an appendectomy. The surgical procedure may include a partial removal of his COLON due to infection.

- Everyone,Just received a call from the hospital in Iowa City and the doctor stated the operation went well. They were able to get the appendix out without removing any part of Mike's bowels which would have left him with a colostomy bag on him for awhile. They cleaned out the infection and he'll probably be there for another 7 to 10 days. better food and company for Mike but we can't call or visit while he's at the hospital.Bob & Patti

The emergency surgery and spread of poison in Mette’s abdominal cavity is indeed life threatening. There is no easy way out from here as he has suffered a permanent and possibly fatal injury to gross medical malpractice.
The normal medical response is when in doubt to remove the appendix. Most of these removals involve a healthy appendix but the risk of not removing it is always so severe.

What a nightmare: improperly convicted and now denied basic medical care. We should organize a new petition addressed to Amnesty International seeking to remedy the denial of primary medical care, which international law and U.S. law recognize as a basic right of the imprisoned. Of course he can sue for the medical malpractice. The care at the prison infirmary fell beneath the general level of competence.
He probably can't sue for the conviction - everyone you would need to sue is covered in immunity.
He could sue the "victim" for battery and malicious prosecution.
And finally - quit talking about hiring Corboy, Demetrio, or Bob Clifford - these are Illinois licensed attorneys.
You have to get a juiced Iowa attorney - preferably a Med Mal guy with ties to law enforcement.
Hopefully John Kass will pick up on it.

I'm an aggressive Indiana Prosecutor. I am hated by defense attorneys, lazy cops, lazy prosecutors, drunk drivers, domestic batterers psychotic truck drivers and anyone with an Iowa driver's license. I have more than 25 family members and friends on the Chicago Police Department. It makes me sick to my stomach that the Cook County ASA's behave the way that they do.
The day that Mike Mette was convicted, I created a "Mette Infraction Zone" in my jurisdiciton. Translated, anyone with an Iowa driver's license pays the ticket or goes to trial. Maximum fines and licene suspensions for no-shows. When they complain I provide the phone number 515-281-5211, ask for Governor Chet Culver and refer to the Mike Mette Division.
Please be careful out there.
The good news -- if there is any good news -- is that the University of Iowa Hospitals is a world class place (largest university hospital complex in the world, as I recall) and the care there is exceptional. Glad he got there in time!

Where are OUR politicians? Where is the FOP? Where is the MEDIA? This is a travesty of justice!!! Anyone workng this job has come across homicide offenders who have been released once, twice, three times, each time murdering again! No room in the prisons for them! How many of you send your kids to University of Iowa, Iowa State, St. Ambrose, Cornell College, etc. If every city worker who has a kid in school in Iowa, pulled them from the roster, they would lose a ton of $$$. What speaks louder to a politician than $$$$? Nothing! If you want to do something about this kid's injustice, then do it.
