Businesses, high-rises and even private homes with exterior surveillance cameras could share their video with Chicago’s 911 center to create a panoramic view of disaster scenes, under a plan advanced Wednesday that could dramatically expand the city’s Big Brother reach.
No other city in the nation would have more surveillance cameras at its disposal if banks, bars and convenience stores take the city up on its unprecedented offer.
London has 500,000 cameras monitoring virtually every public move its citizens make. Chicagoans could someday approach that total, thanks to the ordinance sponsored by Mayor Daley and advanced by the City Council’s Police and Fire Committee.
Cameras, as has been stated here and elsewhere, are next to useless. Unless someone is watching them, they prevent nothing, deter no crime and have to date, never apprehended a criminal. Unless there are enough "boots on the ground" to operate off the camera's data collection, nothing will ever be accomplished - aside from the aforementioned tax hike.

I am not against cameras but I am against the idea that cameras will keep anyone of us safer.
I handled more than a share of violent crimes committed right under the city PODS. None of these PODS stopped the crime and not one of these PODS produced any evidence in solving the crime.
I say if we put cameras in the Alderman's offices, Mayor's Office and other places they frequent for "business", crime would reduce greatly.

operation for several years and has produced several hundred arrests a year using videos from
crime scenes in that time. This program has been mostly ignored by the higher ups in the
department. This is an actual use of video surveillance that is producing results. For some reason
the bosses seem enamored with hooking up hundreds cameras that no one will watch with the
misguided concept that it will help them see what is going on when the shit hits the fan rather
than expanding a program that has proven how to get real results from the existing video
cameras. It must be that they are embarrassed that something that works originated at the district
level instead of from some highly paid consultant.

May I be the first to offer my lowly opinion on this subject. To preface my comments I am a detective (and have been for the last 19 years). We now have cameras everywhere. To my knowledge the expensive array of cameras the city operates have not solved one crime to date. They are as useless as tits on a bull. The only decent cameras are the "red light" cameras that you can count the hairs on your head type. I know because I have been the victim of some of them and they take great pictures of the driver, the license plates, and the interior of the car. The point of this diatribe is that felony review uses cameras as another reason not to approve any charges, looking to see if there are any videos of whatever. Add more cameras, and expect to be taking longer looking for every camera image from every angle. We don't need any additional cameras, that is, unless another of Daley's or an alderman's relatives are selling cameras these days.

Hey stupid, I guess you aren't aware that that program in 016 takes closed circuit camera recordings from either the victim's building or nearby cameras that are NOT on the POD system. The real purpose of THAT program you speak of, and uniformed I might add, is to enhance the video obtained to a point where it is usable in court if possible, and that 99% of that video comes from PRIVATELY OWNED closed circuit cameras such as food mart, banks, grocery stores etc. that are either victims or where at the scene and capturing video that was obtained by detectives.

I've got 5 outdoor cameras up around my house, if OEMC wants to look at them I'll gladly let them hook their overpriced equipment up. And, as a concerned citizen, I would encourage you to start looking at State's Attorney's cases and how many of our good arrests get knocked out because our word means nothing. It's the city Daley envisioned and created.
My partner and I continue to work hard only for the fact that we have one of the greatest bosses on the CPD. This will only last as long as he is our boss...which unfortunately, is not long.

the newer POD cameras are a great start, but could have a little better picture quality. I use the rewind feature of the cameras close by every time there's a shooting in the district. Someone on the desk should know how to log on and show you how. it's actually a helpful tool for PO's (if you've got some time on your hands)

OVER HALF THE PODS LITERALLY NEED SOMEONE TO PHYSICALLY CLIMB THE POLE AND PULL THE HARD DRIVE WITHIN 72 HRS TO GET THE VIDEO!!!!!! they then download it to a cd and police-mail it to the requester. this ONLY happens when someone puts in a request. 9/10 times, by the time they pull the HD, the video has been long gone and the dicks get a note saying said video was unattainable or damaged or inconclusive. --- ASA's won't charge without videos now and dicks can't get video within the 48 hour window.

Rey Colon, 2710 n. sawyer, has the practice of issuing permanent residential parking permit stickers to non-chicago residents, namely a resident of Cicero in the 014th dist. Funny how the people who live on the block have to pay to get hte passes but a letter from the alderman gets this non-chicago resident a free one. And that came straight from the person who owned the car and had the sticker. I'm sure the people of the media would love to get a hold of this story.

I had an event that I had to call the fusion center for. After the job-related questions were asked/answered I queried about the 'sound' activatation on the pods we were told they have. Uh - yea, the technology exists, but according to the Fusion Center, CPD owns no such creature.
A waste of time, manpower & money. Why hasn't the ALCU or some other tree-huggin' liberal fuck organization filed some sort of lawsuit to disable what actual working cameras the city has? They've proven to be utterly useless to deter crime - shitheads serve/work right underneath em. Anytime we've contacted the Pod People to see what if anything was seen - yup... nuttin' - just our bad luck, camera rotated in the wrong direction... wouldn't ya just know that would happen?
