SUV's?

  • The Chicago Police Department will quadruple its fleet of gas-guzzling Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs this year -- to more than 200 -- under a contract in the works sure to please Supt. Jody Weis.

Weis has argued that the Police Department's fleet -- 36 SUVs and 2,753 sedans -- is in "horrible" condition and that SUVs make more sense to get through Chicago's winters.

The average beat car is 2.6 years old and has 50,622 miles on it. The average unmarked vehicle is 2.9 years old with 41,285 miles.
What most coppers wouldn't give for a vehicle with only 50,000 miles on it. Fleet claims the mileages are comparable between Tahoes and Crown Vics. A quick google search shows Tahoes at 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway, Crown Vics at 17/25 mpg and Impalas at 16/24 mpg, so once again it seems that Fran publishes what Daley wants rather than what the facts are.

We'd like new cars, don't get us wrong, but it'd make more sense to spend wisely in these economic times. And speaking of spending wisely, you'd think it would make sense to have our own metal working shop that could build or adapt existing computer mounts to get the Tahoes out to the street quicker. You might be surprised to learn that that's exactly what we used to have when the Department ran the garages. Not anymore though. A mount must be designed, submitted for bid, granted to the low bid connected contractor, subcontracted out to someone else and then installed.

Aren't these SUVs supposed to be the ones with the rifle racks?

I for one will welcome a Tahoe! Beats the Impala that I have now. What a piece of crap!

Think I have a permanant mark from the PDT on my leg.

Id like to see everyone of us beat guys assigned a take home car. I would be willing to look at the numbers and see how much a car costs me a year, and then we could talk about that raise?

WTF!!!!!
WHY CAN'T THIS FU*KIN DEPT. GET IT RIGHT FOR ONCE. HOW MANY YEARS OF BULLSHIT EQUIPMENT DOES IT TAKE TO PUT PEOPLE OF KNOWLEDGE IN CHARGE.

FLEET MANAGEMENT IS A REAL JOKE!!!

EVERY CAR THAT COMES OUT OF 51ST HAS DIFFERENT EQUIPMENT. LIGHT BARS ARE A MISMATCH AND ARE PROGRAMMED TO LIGHT UP IN GOOFY WAYS. MANY CARS HAVE DIFFERENT SIRENS YOU CAN'T TELL IF IT'S A PRIVATE AMBULANCE COMING OR WHAT. PDT'S?? WELL WE JUST CAN'T GET THEM TO WORK AN ENTIRE TOUR OF DUTY AND NOT TO MENTION ONE PDT DOES NOT FIT ALL MOUNTS.

SO ANOTHER STAB IN THE DARK!!!!

LET'S ORDER SUV'S WHICH I'M SURE FLEET GARAGES ARE READY TO WORK ON. I HAVE BEEN ON THE JOB AWHILE AND I'VE YET TO SEE SOME GOOD CHANGES COME FROM FLEET PERSONNEL. TRIAL AND ERROR HAS COST THE TAXPAYERS ALOT OF MONEY.

........NO WONDER WE CAN'T GET A FCKN RAISE!!!!!!!

Obviously the people complaining about the SUVs are not assigned to a beat car!
I could give a rat’s ass if they are 1 wheel drive. The SUVs have a lot more leg room and a much better driver’s line of sight. Who gives a shit if it gets 11 or 33 miles per gallon? Last time I checked the city was paying for the gas!
To the people who are complaining about “slipping” or “tipping over” that just shows you DON’T GET IT YET!!!!!
SLOW DOWN means SLOW DOWN!!
Go to your jobs in a safe manor, give the victims the VIN sheet and then go sit in your vehicle and finish your case report. Listen up for your fellow brothers in blue in case someone needs help!!! That’s IT!!! If you have a prisoner that needs to be transported, call for the wagon.

Look out for each other and stay safe, this city isn’t worth dieing for, ask some gold star family members!!!

Those "nasty Chicago winters". It's not the ice and snow--it's BULLSHIT!

Why not Cadillac Escalades with opaque windows and all the bells and whistles for the suckhole exempts?

Don't get me wrong. I'll take a SUV with winter four wheel drive any day--but NOT at the expense to the taxpayers and OUR SALARIES!

Perhaps, the City can distribute a fleet of the Lexus RX400h (hybrid 28 mpg city) to all the "green" commanders, GXs to deputy chiefs and the top-of-the-line LXs for chief and above.

I think the Beat vehicle for the CPD being a mini-cooper is a great idea. They're fuel efficent, they handle well, they can navigate well in alleys and they are relatively in expensive.

Where prisoner transportation is required of a couple of arrestees you have a Chicago Cab dispatched (the non owner operator type with the back seat partition), you have the aresstees handcuffed in the back seat (and handcuffed to the back seat partition in the Cab). Then the Cab drops them off at the police station while the mini-cooper squad follows.

In the interim while waiting for the Cab the arestees can be cuffed to the front bumper as the Officers stay warm or cool, whatever the case may be in the Cooper squad. The squad can be equipped blankets in the back to keep Pookie an Poo warm in the Winter months.

The transportation and insurance cost of this type of arestee transportation is more then offset by the fuel savings realized from scaling down from the Crown Vics.

Just throwing it out there as a thinking out of the box thought.

SCC: I evaluated the Tahoe. The particlar model had a V-8 and was very fast. A number of problems though:
(1). The vehicle is top heavy; if the driver turns too sharp and it'll rollover.
(2). Another problem is the vehicles weight. The brakes will burn up and become ineffective after three hard braking incidents in a short period of time (such as a short chase).
(3). The vehicle is higher up. Trying to get a resisting arrestee up into the vehicle.
(4). The vehicle is too large. Try to reverse in a Chicago alley and you better get the "Damage to Department Vehicle Report" out. You'll hit that telephone pole you didn't see.

J-Fed is trying hard to get us equipment. Unfortunately, he doesn't have street experience to know sh!t from shinola. Somebody at HQ blew some smoke up his ass when they touted the virtues of the Tahoe.

.2x4 drive makes these vehicles a poor choice. Winters these things slip and slide in rain they slip. They are so bad that allot of older one have minor damage. Broken mirrors small dents around the sides corners. Chicago has lots of narrow streets where these will have difficulty navigating. Can’t chase with these either.

The iPod connection is standard. A 6-disc CD player would be nice. Order the ForTwo model in either white or blue, slap on a couple of decals and we're ready to roll--to the hole.

Nevermind the winters, it's the frigging potholes and g-damn speedbumps that make me want a Tahoe. I avoid driving down streets with them anyway.

Aren't they flex-fuel or E-85?

The city might have gotten a deal on the Tahoes with gas over $4 a gallon.

What you dont realize is that the City gets the vehicles dirt cheap. They dont pay road tax and sales tax and city and state tax on the gas like you and me do. The get to buy the gas just likre the farmers do. NO TAX. This means the city is paying about $2.50 a gallon for gas. They are not concerned about fuel prices just like they dont car about giving our money away in bullshit lawsuits. When it comes to the city money is never an issue until it involves your SALARY!.

I'm sure J-Fed's vehicle has a working defroster so that come this winter he won't have to have the hand held scraper on the front seat to scrape the frost and ice off of the inside of the window. Or better yet, I bet he has working heat in his vehicle so that you aren't wearing artic socks and long underware just to keep warm inside the squad. I guess the squads fit into the neighborhoods and can be classified as Ghetto Cruisers. Wake up J-Fed, think of the moral boost you would create to have squads that actually work for your men!

Well I have lived in chicago my whole life and have been on this job for 21 years. I have never had a 4 wheel drive vehicle on the CPD.

The problem is that the new breed does not know how to drive a vehicle that does not have front wheel drive. The a front wheel drive vehicle can be a blessing under some conditions but if you know how to drive any rear wheel two wheel drive vehicle is just fine 364 days a year in chicago.

Forget about being "Green" forget about the milage. It's all about being safe and being "Blue". That is except for the few who are "yellow" and those who are "Brown nosers"

Give these to the exempts and give us their cars, call earl schieb, paint em white, throw a little red light on top and they will be much better than the tahoes.

Chases are forbidden in a Tahoe, but who dares get in a chase anymore? Fast way to some lengthy time off.

I would like a Lincoln Navigator myself. I would get to jobs in the same amount of time but I would feel better doing it.

In regards to the 2wd vs 4wd. At the airport ( with aviation money ) we have 4wd trucks. Everything is heavy duty so its the same as a "police package".
The only trouble is we also have fleet, so they buy the worst parts for the most money, never have anything in stock and can't get what you need.
Other than that the vehicles are ok.
The tahoes the dept are getting are bargain priced, chevy is giving the things away right now

There are brand new marked cars with no cages or light bars sitting in station lots all over the city.
THE STAFF FROM HEADQUARTERS USES THEM TO DRIVE TO AND FROM WORK. THEY PARK THEIR PERSONNEL CAR AT A STATION, THEN PICK UP THE MARKED CAR FOR THE DRIVE TO 35TH STREET, THEREBY SAVING THEMSELVES GAS MONEY!!!
I believe they are headquarters lunch cars, or official business cars that are granted to the privileged to save gas costs for themselves.
On a weekend we have NO pool cars!
Yet, these vehicles sit unused except for the workers of the Ivory tower (35th St. Headquarters)
Go check your station parking lots in the evenings and week-ends!!

Maybe the reason why city cant keep wagons up in districts and why some districts are using cars as wagons

The Tahoe was discussed in detail in this blog over 5 months ago. It had nothing to do with Weis.

35th street had been looking at buying these since last summer and are just getting around to the purchase now.

Fleet has no say so as to what is purchased for the dept., it's all from 35th st. (budget), who knew last year that gas would be 4 a gallon?

If we need more suv's they better look at the escape hybrid!

So be happy and drive whatever they hand out. Anything new is better than what we have.

I hope she makes it through August, I'm just afraid leaving the area using the expressway in case a wheel breaks off. its amazing running on two shifts with different drivers.

I imagine if the cars were taken care off professionally (replacement parts replaced before breakage, struts, shocks springs, alternator's)by real mechanics other than fleet the cars would make 200 thousand plus miles

the reason the cars slip and slide is because of traction. the tires are the problem. i have a rear wheel drive car with dedicated snow tires that will run rings around your '4 wheel drive vehicle with all-season tires.' go to tirerack.com and see the results of snow tires vs. all-season vs. 4-wheel drive.snow tires cost around 450.00 for four tires and no penalty for gas mileage like an suv and the crown vic will perform much better. these are not your daddy's snow tires.

Why own a car? when you get a new crown vic every 6 months and next time look in the rear seat he even had a "reading lamp" installed so he can dictate what he reads to the servants driving his lazy ass around! Liked how he kissed j-feds ass at the hearings, why eddie becuase your a scared man afraid his detail amy be moved and made to work more than 2on and 3 off schedule? WTF! your guys make D-3+ pay and your loyalty is great how you dumped your loyal guy to 008 awhile ago because you wanted someone else? great job eddie but then again your "above the law" and do whatever you want and frown on anyone who dares cross the king! You could use the big suv eddie though, you could maybe put a roof mounted dvd so you could watch more ben hur movies and dream! It would be ggod to have when the servants drive you outside the city on "official business" to your mansion in wisconsin! Amazing how your servants have a free city gas card paid for by police so you can fuel at any BP station plus more places while we pay for it! You have 4 million in your campaign accounts alone can't you even pay for fuel?

The worst thing I ever heard was when it went in for a brake job and I happened to over hear the manager at A2 garage say to the mechanic to put a good used set of pads and rotors on! WTF. 4 Wheel drive is just an expensive luxury, it is more expensive to maintain and fuel economy suffers.

It really isn't neccessary here. The roads are typically cleared off quickly.

I owned a Ford explorer 4x4. In 5 years I used the four wheel drive maybe 3 or 4 times, mainly for peace of mind during bad weather. But honestly, I would have gotten to my destination without using it.

It's all about knowing how to drive in snow.

For example, I drove my Mazda miata (rear drive)one winter where we had record snowfall. I didn't get stuck all winter. But would laugh my ass off at all the road ranging assholes in the 4 wheel drive range rovers, BMWs etc, that believed four wheel drive allows you to drive faster in shit weather.Miles later I would drive by them after they spun-out into a ditch, and honk and give them a wave with my middle finger and continue my trip to the west suburbs. Fucking yuppies!

To the under 30 coppers, you can't drive a car today in the winter unless it's equipped with TRACTION CONTROL.You bunch of whiners!

I learned to drive in snow with a 1972 Dodge Monocco with 400C.I. engine, rear wheel drive, with bias ply tires. It did just fine. Even my mother could drive in snow!

Ask Northside, he would know.

wrong, the city ordered some diplomats and many of them were unmarked vehicles. I know that they were used by the flying squad and gangs. they were only used for a short time

From someone with 33 years on the job, I recall we DID have some Dodge DIPLOMATS in the early 80's, as well as MONACOS, POLARAS and ASPENS. Over the years we also had Ford Fairmonts and LTDs, Plymouth Furys and Valliants, Studebakers, GMCs, Checker Marathons, Jeeps and whatever could be cobbled together. We have had box unmarked Chevy Caprices driven by supervisors.

So don't call someone a liar when you are not sure.

I tried to find a photo of a CPD Dodge Diplomat, maybe someone can find one and email it to SCC. In the meantime, enjoy the pictures on the following sites:
