If True, This is Very Sad

We used to be led by "bosses." People who'd actually make an effort to appear interested. Now?
  • The Commander of TRU has not been seen in the unit since the passing of Officer Eddie Massas. No roll call briefing about the incident, no condolences, not even in the building to be seen for the past 48 hours. How does a Cmdr. of Police not show up at roll call after one of the men in his unit dies of a tragic accident?!? Peer support has been there both days. Both Lt.'s have addressed roll call but no sign of the Cmdr. anywhere. It is a sad, sad time in this department. They, read Exempts, have no regard for those of us still out there working the streets. Not one exempt member came by the unit to address the officers, not one. Not even our own Commander. Unbelievable!!! I obviously did not post this among the rest of the regards for Officer Massas because I did not want to put this among the condolences that are placed there, but I think this needs to get out to the rank and file. Yeah, they have our backs alright. The only ones that have our backs are the guys sitting next to us in roll call.
This was posted in the comments at 0638 hours. We'd hope this was remedied by today at some point.

Your final comment was right on, officer. Just like in the Army, you don't fight for freedom or patriotism or any abstract concepts...you fight for the guys on your right and your left, and they fight for you. It's one of those movie cliches that just happen to be true.

Watch each other's backs.

I don't mind making arrests, that's why I became a police officer, but when I am "counseled" for not making my "head a day" quota, and this clout, nepotism, commander can't even show up to be there for his men/women of TRU to address them regarding the tragic death of one of their own. I have to say, what a guy!!! You know what Sir, let me go and get you some more heads so you get that Deputy spot that you are striving for.... What a fucking puke!!! Back in the 80's, in the Gang Units, if someone died even off-duty, bosses from all three Gang Units showed up to express sympathy and give money that would be brought to the familys home by many, many officers in a long line of squad cars. They usually were also in uniform to show their respect. I think this happened in a lot of places.

I don't think the officers in TRU need the Commander to address the troops to in order to carry out their jobs, I just think there's a thing called "protocol", or simply just "Class". Why do you think this department cares about you?

What made you believe that this department, its bosses, this city, its citizens, or its mayor ever cared about you?

Why are you surprised? or disappointed? or shocked?

For the rest of you who may be under the same dillusion, understand this...when it comes to this department, you are a rug.

Most people ignore a rug and walk right over it. A rug that is off to the side, out of constant foot traffic can last 20 years. A rug that is right in the middle of everything all the time will wear out long before 20 years and will be summarily tossed in the trash.

Some people like a special rug and put it in a special place for people to see. But no matter how much any particular person likes the rug, he will toss it in the trash the minute it gets stained after he spilled something on it.

Then, he'll just go out and get another rug.

Bosses want to recieve respect, no, demand respect from the rank and file.

The vast majority of exempts do not get it - RESPECT IS EARNED. There are ways that a boss could show he does have respect for his troops and showing up at roll call after this tragedy would be such a way.

We do not need exempts to hold our hands and coddle us, but the exempts can get off of their fuckin' high horse and stand shoulder to shoulder with their fellow officers even in times of unconventional tragedy. I can respect a boss who has never forgotten they once wore blue. I have a grave distaste for the ones who think they have been white shirts since they left the academy.

He was always there at night on the weekend......

If you say so, but I never saw him any where but the building. Usually he was leaving as we walked into to work.

I hadnt even heard of what happened to this officer. My prayers go out to the unit and the PO's family. Stay safe off and on duty. We are all we have together, bosses and citizens hate us.

The funny thing is that in ten years when i'm gone these clouted know nothing fucks like Williams and Sodini will have risen even higher in the department.

It'll be fun to watch them look at each other not knowing what to do when the shit hits the fan.

I've encountered Sodini on a couple of incidents on this job. this guy is in WAAAAAAAAAAY over hid balding head.

The reason for this post was not to cause dissention and get TRU and the district guys at each others throats again. The rhetoric between units and patrol is wearing thin. Nor was it to say that we needed the Cmdr. to come in and hold our hands. Many of us have buried our friends and coworkers since we have been on the job and only a few really standup bosses have come in and showed that they were still the real police. This was originally placed in a post that was emphasizing the fact that currently, no matter what HQ says, no one but the blue shirt sitting next to us in the car has our back. To come out to roll call and address a tragedy with the members of the unit is not mandatory, it is just the right thing to do. It shows unity and that you respect the men and women working for you. That you appreciate their service and that YOU HAVE THEIR BACKS, no matter the situation. It promotes camaraderie and boosts morale. Just think, if the Cmdr. had shown up to roll call just one of the days after Eddie was killed this post would have never even been put up. A simple, "I know that this situation sucks. If you need to talk to someone about it let someone know and watch out for each other." Those few lines of words would have done for morale than anyone could imagine. You can't lead people by force for very long, eventually people get sick and tired of it and quit following, but if you lead with respect, even the toughest of leaders will have people falling all over themselves to follow. Maybe the people on this blog who say we are fools for continuing to do what is asked of us are right, unfortunately I think I am the real police and will continue to go out there and do the best that I can, not for anyone, especially not for the Cmdr. but for me and my own piece of mind. End of sermon.

I'm a friend of Eddie's partner Jaime and just want to say how well received the support you showed Eddie's friends and family. All the BS thats said between you all really didn't come across when the chips were down. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for bein there for his family and making it that much easier for them to accept what Eddie sacrificed so much of his time to, like all you guys do.

don't mind making arrests, that's why I became a police officer, but when I am "counseled" for not making my "head a day" quota, and this clout, nepotism, commander can't even show up to be there for his men/women of TRU to address them regarding the tragic death of one of their own. I have to say, what a guy!!! You know what Sir, let me go and get you some more heads so you get that Deputy spot that you are striving for.... What a fucking puke!!! You should of took that 75% permanent disability back in the day... LOSER!!!

9/24/2008 12:19:00 AM

I have never heard of him being a worker, only a clouted lazy ass. And thats some of his better attributes.

While I am a member of tru, I do believe the commander should have addressed the unit about the tragic death of P.o. Massas, but what can you expect from some of CPD's bosses? The same officers who claim that us blueshirts have each others back, and are all pissed off, can you honestly say that you go above and beyond to offer support for your fellow officer during tragic times? When my father passed, not one officer from TRU attended the wake or ST. Jude, not even my own SGT., The only people who did show up were, Voulgaris, O'Donnel and Keating! All Commanders of TRU. No officers, no Sgts. What happened to having each others back?

Hi. I am not a police officer, but someone who knew Eddie for many, many years on a personal level. I would just like to say that Eddie was the type of individual who had a magnetic personality. To know him, was to love him. I can understand why his co-workers are upset. Losing him was devastating to many, and maybe having his boss come and show some sympathy and concern would have allowed everyone to feel as though Eddie was more than just a number or a uniform; that he was valued. I believe they're upset because they feel (and in reading I would have to agree) that Eddie didn't mean anything to this Commander. How can the loss of such an amazing individual not deserve five minutes of silence, or discussion?

Aside from this however I would like to say that I was at Eddie's wake and funeral. The support that you men and women in blue showed to the family and friends was simply mind blowing. It brought tears to my eyes to see such love being expressed by all of you. I was simply amazed and have a new found respect for every single one of you. It was so clear for me to see why Eddie was so in love with his career choice. I saw many of you lined up from inside the funeral home and out the door. One by one you shook the hands of his family and paid your respects. I seen some of you men who looked so tough in your exterior, shed tears over his casket. Regardless of who your commander is and what he fails to do in his job, I want you to know that YOU are valuable and appreciated. I thank you for loving Eddie as you did and for making his last moments here on earth so happy for him. You were truly family to him.

I love you Eddie and I miss you already.

RIP
