Bzzzzzz

  • A man who allegedly threatened police with a sharp-edged object is dead after being Tasered by officers Saturday afternoon on the West Side.

The incident happened about 2 p.m. in the 5000 block of West Washington Boulevard as police officers on bike patrol viewed an erratic person drinking from an open bottle, according to police News Affairs.

As officers approached the person, he became combative with what appeared to be a sharp-edged object and threatened officers with it, police said. He then fled and a foot chase ensued. The person resisted arrest and was subdued with a Taser discharge, police said.

Police said the person appeared to have ingested an unknown amount of narcotics and was pronounced dead at the scene.

So, is this another instance of the dead guy choking to death on a package of narcotics? Or another case of "excited delirium" killing a dope addict? The headline only points to a taser though. And the article comments, too.

These guys are probably going to be alright on this. Hopefully they will. The use of the taser seems justified on the use of force guidelines. Still they are going to be scrutinized and raked over the coals for doing their job. It just isnt worth it.

The other day I was on a job when a disturbance call came out nearby. It was busy and no cars were available to go. The job had the potential for a physical confrontation over bullshit and a few years ago I would have taken a short ride on it for the fun of it and because it seemed like the right thing to do. This time I went through a quick mental checklist of what was involved, the whole situation, figured it wasnt worth it and that the situation would probably resolve itself before someone got there and just continued on my job. My feeling is that we are working without a net, bosses question and scrutinize whatever we do whenever something doesnt go right or there is any kind of a problem so why go out of our way to look for trouble. I am sad about this but my morale and attitude have just been beaten down.

Forgot to ask - do they make tasers for civilians? I'm not talking about stun guns - I mean the heavy duty kind.

I have plenty of fire power here at the house (have to be prepared in case Obama wins and hell breaks loose - God forbid), but I've always wanted a taser for protection too.

Just wondering if they sell to civilians and what kind of a permit would be needed.

I know it probably seems like a stupid question (apologies), but I'm curious nonetheless.

Thanks.

The following information is from a friend of a friend of mine who is a judge in Cook County: ...here are the judges running for retention for whom you should should consider voting no. This recommendation is based almost entirely on the Chicago Council of Lawyers (which does the most thorough review, and has the highest standards, of all the bar associations) evaluations. I have attached their detailed evaluations that you may access if you wish.
If you do not want to print out the attachment, just take the following names with you, then you may want to vote to retain the judges listed with the exception of the following. These are judges, IN THE ORDER IN WHICH THEIR NAMES WILL APPEAR, that have been rated not qualified:

Evelyn Clay
Shelli Williams-Hayes
Vanessa Hopkins
Edward Pietrucha
Janet Brosnahan
Cassandra Lewis
Valerie Turner

What? Morale down?? But our esteemed Mayor was recently quoted that morale is NOT down. Oh, lordy! Now, who do I believe.....the copper who is the thick of things on a daily basis or Mayor Short Shanks who has insulated himself from reality?

AMEN. I started doing the same thing about a month ago and posted same on here...also got a lot of AMEN's.

Don't be sad--you're doing the right thing...asshole thugs don't deserve, and don't even usually want, police service. Save your energy for the true victims, and hold your head up high. We're all with you brother, you're not alone in your thinking!!!

Go home safe should be our first and steadfast rule.

"Use of Force Guidelines state..." blah,blah,blah......
Anybody who uses a Taser is out of his mind. There are two reasons its an optional piece of equipment:

A.) They'd have to buy everbody one if they required its deployment.

B.) The Party/State's Atty. will decide who gets fucked based on political needs at the time of shitbirds death.

Remember, just because CPD has a totally legal tool and very well thought out policy for its use, doesn't mean you're going to be OK. Not in this city, in this enviroment.

In case you didn't know, the use of force model allows an officer to use a taser against an "Active Resister", which mean if an offender is only running, he can be tased. The offender doesn't have to be threatening officer (or be considered an "Assailant"). The officers are more than justified in this instance.

My heart goes out to the family of the poor offender...fucking not!

Subject: CPD Wife's Plea--Please Read

Dear Everyone,

I have been waiting for this day for 4 years. My name is Melissa Keefe. As most of you know, my husband Kevin was shot 8 1/2 years ago while on duty for the Chicago Police Department. The man who shot him, was subsequently freed by Judge Evelyn Clay. We spent about three years watching Judge Clay in her courtroom. After watching her over such a long period of time, I am begging you to vote "NO" this November when you see her name on the ballot. She is not well-versed on the law, and often has to be corrected by other people in her courtroom. She is also very lax. Defendants with multiple convictions walk away from her courtroom with probation every day. It was truly horrific to watch her undermine the very laws that she has sworn to uphold. In addition, she let the man who shot Kevin go free.

I realize that the ballots list s o many judges, that it is hard to figure out who is who. I am just asking that you just remember one name, Evelyn Clay, and vote "NO".

I am not trying to be dramatic, but our safety is in jeopardy. We can make a difference!

Thank you for reading this. Please pass it on to everyone you know who can vote.

Melissa Keefe

Just read all the comments (chicago tribune)from civilians who absolutely without a doubt, believe the we (the police) go out every day and look for just the right situation to shoot and kill or beat down an innocent law abiding citizen. Just pathetic how so many of "these people" view us. I can just guess the neighborhhod that they live in. You know, the one with a starbucks on every corner and a mailbox right next to it. These people should start walking around the toilet neighborhoods where this stuff happens, you know so they can try to bond with the animal/victims that they want to side with. Maybe sing koombyah and make s'mores next to the stolen car on fire.

KIMBER makes a "less lethal" type weapon, shoots industrial grade mace up to 21ft or so. You can get a tazer type weapon just do a Google search. Tazer.com has the ones we are using.

Id still suggest something from John Browning or Samuel Colt in design, they have a reliable tendency of doing a more permanent job. Gaston Glock has come up with an interesting design too! If you do get one, buy one that starts with a .4X !

P.S. Thanks for the support! Hope all is well with Philly P.D. You have taken some hard hits out there too!

SOLUTION: Have several officers go into that block and write (ticket) every violation found on the vehicles of those residents.

The order says that all supervisors be qualified on the taser AND WILL carry the taser...many times when POs are asking for a supervisor with a taser, supervisors say over the air that they don't have one. What's the deal? Are these Sgt.s just pussies, or do they feel it's "not worth it." Some leadership.

I know the female who aggravated this entire thing. This isn't the first time that some one has gotten seriously injured for a BS!! arrest. ie. 3 department vehicles damaged, 2 people shot and one PO almost getting run over by a car for 3 rocks!!
Don't get me wrong. I'm sure there is a GREAT possibility that this person who was tazed was a scum bag. I just wanna let you guys know the truth about what happened out there. I'm sure that supervisor went out there with good faith in this PO not knowing that her judgment was the poorest out there. I just hope a good white shirt isn't gonna get hung out to dry for some arrest hungry PO's BS.

I love News Affiars' use of language: "an erratic person drinking from an open bottle, according to police News Affairs." If the bottle was closed how could this "errratic person" drink form it? And by the way, when you're at 5000 W. Washington, (or anywhere in 015) aren't most of the people you see erratic?
