Not Registering Fallout

Serious question for the masses.
  • If you don't register previously registered weapons in an effort to avoid the $60 fee, what penalties can be assessed?
We've heard that a municipal violation cannot be the basis for a search warrant. But keeping a weapon on business premises can subject you to license checks and if an unregistered weapon is located at that time, the City can pull your permits, licenses and whatnot.

Someone in Legal know the rules?

I would like clarification if possible.

Currently, ONE gun is $20. Two - ten guns are $25, and eleven on up is $35.

Is this new budget calling for $20 PER GUN? If they are now going to charge a fee PER GUN this is totally fucked up worse than it already is. Some of us own more than a few non duty weapons. Why do we have to pay year after year to register them when nothing changes?

Time to call the NRA and ISRA and maybe get some kind of lawsuit going. Daley is a prick!

I have 123 firearms. That would be over $7,000.00 in registration fees yearly when I retire. I am moving to the burbs.

Your missing a part of that story. I was told they want to limit law enforcement and security officers to a maximum of 5 free firearm registrations. Anything after that would be charged the full amount to register. A cop I know works at City Hall and was present when the Alderman were discussing this change.

Hunting rifles should not be kept in the city since you can't hunt here. Also there are no gun ranges for one to use located in the city. Keep your hunting weapons at your cabin in the woods, therefore you don't have to register them.

You would think that the US Supreme Court would eventually rule this "fee" stuff is unconstitutional. If the right to bear arms is a 2nd Amendment right, then it must follow similar to the voting issue, in the south during the late 50's and early 60's. Blacks were given the right to vote but in the south a "poll tax" was charged to vote thus skirting the law. It would seem similar, Daley is trying to skirt the 2nd amendment law by charging high fees.

Speaking of the legality...

Besides the obvious (money), what is their legal basis for having people register their guns? In essence if a citizen does not register his or her guns, the city says he or she cannot exercise his or her constitutional right to keep arms.

Seems like a catch 22 to me, but everything makes sense in this city if you are a socialist.

Hey dickhead, what if you don't have a hunting cabin. Most people can't even afford property taxes in the city let alone another residence. And if I want to keep a hunting rifle in my house I have the goddamn Constitutional Right to do so!!!!!!!!!

Hey retard, how many people who own rifles have "hunting cabins" in the woods?

There should be NO registration of firearms. And if there has to be, then it should be like Canada, a one time shot. In Canada you only re-register if you move or transfer the ownership of the gun.

Remember gun registration and other types of control are aimed at disarming the masses, nothing more.

You, sir, are an ass. You're one of those people who thinks they're logical, but aren't. I live here. I have a gun safe here. I hunt throughout the state of IL and others - not from one place. Why the hell would I keep my guns where I cannot readily access them?

They could set up NRA or state approved sportsman's clubs as a place for people to keep and store their hunting weapons. This would be a safety issue since weapons at a home could be handled by the wrong folks. This will work out so well.

if you fail to register a previously registered gun in chicago, they mail you a letter that is in duplicate (or triplicate, i forget). the letter outlines what you are to do. YOU CANNOT REREGISTER the firearm because you are in violation of the law. call 911 and the police will take the guns for you and not arrest you. police will provide you with an RD# which you will write in the space provided and mail to the city to prove you are in compliance.
i responded to a "weapon turn in" call where this was the case. caller was elderly retired security guard who was in the hospital for long period of time and could not reregister his guns in time.
tried to talk him out of it but the letter the city wrote was very intimidating to him and he wanted to get rid of his guns out of fear of arrest.
i later heard that letters now go directly to the CAGE team and that might make sense because i have not heard of this happening at beat coppers' level since. this was less than a year ago.
anyone else know anything about this?

I just found out that the city gives coppers only 10 days to register a newly purchased gun. Does anyone know if the gun registration people call the person or shop you purchased this gun from to check the date of purchase?? This to/from they insist you write about where the gun has been is stupid.

"In Canada you only re-register if you move or transfer the ownership of the gun."

"When you move" only applies to handguns and other restricted class weapons; regular (non semiauto) rifles and shotguns only registered when ownership changes.

That's the biggest crock of shit and NO there's no CAGE notification EVER made. Keep beleiving all the bullshit you morons.
