Crooked Cop Pays Judge

  • A crooked former Chicago Police officer today testified that he paid a judge to obtain a search warrant.

Richard E. Doroniuk, who pleaded guilty in June to corruption charges in federal court, is a key witness against former partner Mahmoud "Mike" Shamah.

  • Asked by a federal prosecutor whether he ever gave money to a judge, Doroniuk said, “He asked for it.”

Doroniuk added that he ended up paying the judge.

Paying judges in Cook County has a long and storied history, and we don't doubt for a minute that this unnamed judge isn't the only one taking money for various favors. The odds are way in our favor. Read Cooley's book. Possley. Passarella. Greylord. Gambat. We'd lay money that the percentage of judges taking bribes in Cook County Courts is a bit greater than the percentage of cops. Hell, the incarceration rate for aldercreatures is something like 50% over 30 years.

Cops? Under a tenth of 1% for the same 30 years.

Judges probably hit double digits without breaking a sweat.

"Judges probably hit double digits without breaking a sweat."

Probably?

You can bet your dwindling pension on it.

Payoffs don't just come in envelopes anymore.

They're buried in 'consulting contracts', limited access 'investment opportunities', prearranged 'lawsuit settlements', various lucrative 'favors', 'judicial appointments', questionable civil judgments, election time backing, secretive tips on real estate 'opportunities', TIF fund favoritism, very favorable property tax appeal decisions, property zoning variances impossible for the 'average' citizen to obtain, the obviously arranged, but completely undeserved, career advancements, the unique, and totally unnecessary, creation of ever increasing 'management positions', in city, county and state governmental agencies.... the list is quite long.

You know, it's all about the 'friends and family' plan.

This is a perfect example of what is wrong with the FBI and the US Attorneys.

The article states that the corrupt cop who is cooperating told the Feds about the crooked judge. What have the Feds done to arrest the corrupt judge?

Nothing, and this happened in 2006.

This reminds me of how the Feds gave Corey Flagg the deal of the century after he admitted to stealing kilos of cocaine. They gave him less than half the sentence of Brodrick Jones because Flagg gave them so much "useful" information. But what happened to all of that useful information?

Nothing, and that happened in 2004.

These Feds say that they want to clean up corruption in Chicago but unless they have the perfect case, they leave the citizens of Chicago with the cold, rancid leftovers from their investigations.

Right, because YOU haven't heard about an investigation until today, obviously there hasn't been an ongoing, long term investigation involving many many man hours to vet out everything. The FEDS move slower than Oprah in a foot race, but when they get around to making an arrest, they have about a 90+% conviction rate. Keep that in mind next time you hear "S.O.L." in court.

A 22-year veteran Chicago police officer was fired last month over charges he stole a $1 bag of trail mix from Walgreens.

Aaron Pena was known as the "mayor of 26th Street" by residents in the Ogden District for his helpfulness in the community, according to testimony before the Chicago Police Board released today.

City attorneys alleged that Pena went to the Walgreens in the 1900 block of West Cermak Road in August 2007, bought two bags of trail mix and then took a third from the store without paying. Pena was recorded on store security cameras.

Pena testified that he had opened one bag and thought it was so good he wanted a third. But he said that as he walked to the front of the store to pay, he became concerned that he couldn't hear his radio. He said he forgot about the extra bag when he went outside. He said he didn't realize he had not paid for it until he was asked about it the next day.

"It had slipped my mind . . . what had occurred," Pena testified.

Pena told the board he had a stroke in 2005 that occasionally left him "unfocused." He was criminally charged with misdemeanor retail theft but acquitted.

The city's attorney, however, alluded to two prior incidents at the same Walgreens in which Pena allegedly walked out without paying for merchandise. But Pena was not charged in any other incident, and the board wouldn't allow testimony on them.

The board also found he failed to follow an order because he did not tell a dispatcher he had left a burglary call and was at the Walgreens when he took the trail mix.

I dont believe a judge would be in the position to take money for signing a warrant. By the time you get to the judge signing part, its scrutinized by so many people that its almost a rubber stamp. A copper would have to be nuts to pay when any judge would sign it. Once it gets past felony review its pretty much a done deal, and I've done my share of them. This rat is talking shit.

The city needs to take responsibility for the fact that working police have no accessibility to judges. Many of you think thay anytime we need a search warrant approved there is a duty judge NOT TRUE....We have to impose upon judges off duty. As much as we hate to bother them, there are certain judges with the integrity to be on call, off duty, at their homes, and respond to a knock at their doors... I always made sure that my officers acknowledged the fact that these few and far between judges were given a gift certificate to a restaurant a couple of times a year. Not a bribe, never expexted to sign a warrant without probable cause, just thanks for being part of the team. If that piece of shit compromises the relationship with the few judges that will still do this, then he should burn in hell with the shit bags he is part of...Shame on the county for not having a 24 hour duty judge and thank you to all the real police who continue to work despite him.

blago already said he will not sign it good for him just because you were a broke dick crook county sheriff doesnt mean you should be able to buy into an already under funded pension. Blago said he believes it will put "undue strain on an already strained system during a time of economic hardship for everyone". I dont usually agree with Blago but I agree with him on this one... nicely done Gov!

"Hey SCC:

When you came on this job, did you ever think you'd have this kind of power!

Taking nothing away from SCC, you're confusing the venue with the clientele, the coach with the team, or the range master with the marksmen.

As I'm sure SCC would acknowledge.

This isn't power.

Information is power.

We're merely a transit point for information, some good, some bad, some blockbusting.

But thanks for the kind words all the same.

First the Bus is filled with people, as it goes on its route, some get on, some get off. No seatbelts are available. People get fined for driving unbelted, but our kids are riding all around the city without seatbelts on ,in school busses. Why is it again good for the gooses, but not for the ganders? Or is it Geese, or Geeses???? Anyway, the message is still the same. Citizens are just money funneling contributors for the corrupt double standards Crook County and one-eye blind Federal Machines, who seem now to have morphed into one..
