Surfers Beware

A major flaw discovered in Internet Explorer:
  • The major press outlets are abuzz this morning with news of a major new security flaw that affects all versions of Internet Explorer from IE5 to the latest beta of IE8. The attack has serious and far-reaching ramifications -- and they're not just theoretical attacks. In fact, the flaw is already in wide use as a tool to steal online game passwords, with some 10,000 websites infected with the code needed to take advantage of the hole in IE.
As the entire CPD runs on Internet Explorer, we'd imagine our IT people are working busily at fixing this massive gaping hole in security.

For an alternative (and, in my opinion, better) browser, check out Mozilla Firefox at http://www.mozilla.com

Also, if your computer is infected by some kind of virus, here's a link to a small tech support company that does work for a lot of CPD officers: http://www.fivefrank.com

MAC!!!! For the love of god, spend a little more up front and have much less headache over the next several years. At the very LEAST, run Safari or Firefox instead of IE.....

Boy, you got an imagination. (grin)

While this goes on, Mozilla just yesterday released its last security upgrade to Firefox 2.0. 3.0 will be the thing to get.

CPD is probably still trying to get the 8" floppy drives on the TRS-80s fixed...

If you have any problems, just run up to the Harold Washington Library and use the computers there...

http://www.wgntv.com/library

"WGN’s concealed cameras (VIDEO) show dozens of patrons looking at adult pornography in plain view. Even though each of the 135 computers have attached privacy screens, aisle after aisle the images were impossible to avoid..."

I saw this report on TV and it's like a giant peep show up there. Unbelievable. When are they going to start providing lotion?

It looks like "The Digital Divide" has been all taken care of by now.

Your tax dollars at work...

Yes, the IT people are johnny on the spot SCC, as long as the spot falls withing the hours 9 to 5. The simpler solution would be for the department to do "maintenance", nudge, nudge, wink, wink, or in other words keep the system down until it can be fixed. That way no overtime can be used and get the almighty Lord Shortskanks from having a fit.

So what. I use a Mac with Safari as a browser. I gave up on Windows a few years ago and have never missed it. My computer doesn't crash. Period. It runs for months without ever needing to be re-booted, it never gets shut off. I don't bother with firewall or virus software. No problem.

You have to be kidding!! They are still using IE6 without SP2, they haven't upgraded XP since SP1. There are more holes in department computers then our southern border!
Never use a flash drive with a Dept computer then use it at home! Sure way to ruin your home set-up!!
Firefox!! And if you need Office Software, look into OpenOffice.org-- Totally free and no ads or spyware.

Why does anyone even use IE anymore? I haven't used it since Firefox came out, and I also have used Opera and Safari as well.

WHY USE WHAT IS CONSTANTLY BROKEN? I guess this city is too lazy to download free software.

Either spring the bucks for a Apple Mac or install Linux on your standard PC's. Either way, you're gonna be a lot safer than you could ever dream of being with Windows and whichever antivirus/antispyware/antimalware program you want to run.

If you really wanna play games that bad, get a Nintendo Wii or a Playstation 3. Don't mess with an XBox cuz the current defect rate on them is near 33%.

Use the console for gaming and use Linux or a Mac for all your other computing needs.

Actually, Mac OS X is based on BSD Unix (specifically FreeBSD), and Linux is a clone of Unix... anyway, they're all pretty similar.

As far as which Linux distribution to choose, I recommend Ubuntu Linux ( http://www.ubuntu.com/ ). The free, downloadable installation CD is actually a "live CD", meaning you can just pop the disc into your computer, reboot, and take it for a test drive without actually installing anything.

By the way, I'm sure no one cares at all about any of this.

All of this makes my head hurt. My Windows 3.1 works just fine.
