Air Support Absent

Any idea why they're grounding the helicopter unit for a few weeks? We hope they're retrofitting the bird with missiles and cannon. Something like this would be a nice start:

We've even got a target list available.

Chopper- never around when you actually need em. Day late and a dollar short when the shits hitting the fan. But they sure can call in for event #'s in the doc pretty good. I love it when they respond to a disturbance call and light the whole corner up with light. All the bad guys run well before any officer arrives alloying them all to get away. Not to mention removing any element of surprise for the responding beat car.

I've seen gunfire like this from a helicopter during my training in the Marine Corps. We would clean up the west and south sides in a matter of hours on a hot July evening.

Because of buying a real helo like a UH-1 we bought some cheap crap that is crappy in the cold. you notice that the sleepy heads helo was still operational....wait they got a Huey.

Ah, the good ol' days. A Huey, an M-60 (No Minis then!) and an M-79 grenade launcher. Who needed golf clubs?

Of course, today's kids on the job won't get to experience that, or from what I read, the opportunity to be the "real police."

To your target list I add the following locations in the 005th District:

Altgeld Gardens

House of Hope (Bye Douchebag!)
Liquor Stores
Aldermen Offices

Thanks!

They may be going into phase. Every x amount of hours you have scheduled maintenance you have to do. Then again the Army just cancelled the armed reconnaissance helicopter replacement for the Kiowa so maybe we're getting the prototype.

They can ground the egg beaters for a year and the street police would never miss it. Hell, we wouldn't even know it was grounded if they hadn't told us.

The whirly birds do more for crook county then they do for CPD. Every time I hear them they are heading to suburban cook county to fly around.
I'm guessing the fly boys prefer the greater airspace over the burbs.

The city needs to invest in something that has some real loitering time like an fixed wing aircraft. A good aircraft would be the Douglas DC-3. Fit it out with mini-guns and you'll have "Puff the Dragon" and you'll be clearing out the slums of Chicago in no time. Of course, just because you have a good plane, it doesn't mean shit unless you have a good pilot who knows how to pivot around a point and so forth. In a hand of a good/proficient pilot, any fixed wing aircraft is just as good as a chopper. Btw, is this PD looking for a new pilot?

The only down-fall w/ the helicopter program/ as with all of our programs is there is not enough, be it airframes or pilots there just isn't enough. There should be a one flying almost every min of every day. Maybe one north and one south. Did the department ever think about asking if more coppers wanted to train to do it? Yea it is true from time to time it is there after the fact but. there has been times when it has helpped out greatly. I have been involved in a few instances that the eye in the sky has been able to zero in on the bad guy and allow responding units to take him in custody w/ no harm being brought to the officers. One of which was a veh pursuit that was terminated by several juristictions, to include ours. They eye just "followed" him until he bailed then told us where to find him.

The Fire Department and the the Police Department have helicopter and SCUBA units. Sounds like a duplication of manpower. My thinking is only the Police Department should have these units. The Fire Department could request assistance from the Police if they have a need for them. The Police and the Fire Departments do rescue work but only the Police do patrol and collect evidence. In NYC it was the Police dive teams sent to the downed jet in the Hudson river.

A good crew chief flies the flight, fights the fight, and then when the pilots go off for cocktails, pulls the necessary maintenance.

Becuz, next flight, his butt will be in the $1 nylon jump seat with the rest of the folks, so it better fly.

The correct answer is because there is NO ONE TO FLY IT. Harry Hohm made sure he drove out almost every pilot from the unit that threatened his $200,000+ gig (Commanders pension + $110,000ish for "Chief Pilot.") One of those left is on the medical. The other is on furlough. Plenty of pilots on the department-just all transferred out or never went in to avoid Hohm. Hohm let it be known that no other supervisors who could fly would be allowed in, throwing out all the sgts and above currently licensed. Remind me again who Hohm's clout is...

At the end of this downtime for the helicopter, crime stats will not have been affected at all but there will have been 25,000 less event numbers issued.

They need to find a better way to use this tool. A helicopter can be a very useful tool in police work but if there is nobody in the unit who knows anything about police work it's hard to succeed.

They wold have had refuel facilities at Meigs but that went the Daley Way.

Now, a Bell JetRanger Helicopter, of the type I figure the CPD helicopter is, cost around $700 an hour to operate. Figure an hour flight time back and forth, just to fuel the thing, and it gets mighty expensive to fly the helo over to Midway just for fuel.

That helicopter likely has a fuel capacity of around 91 gallons. At around $6 a gallon for jet fuel that is $546 for a whole fill up. They never get an entire tank full. So getting to the fuel is more expensive than the fuel itself.

Do you think it just might be cheaper to get a fuel truck to go to the aircraft and bring fuel to the helicopter? Oh, I forgot for a second where I was, a Mayoral cousin probably has the fuel concession at Midway.

I find it sad that Channels 2, 5, 7, and 9 each have a helicopter and its contracted all by the same firm. You would think that Chicago could do the same thing as the local news stations do.

Heck, there are two former LASD MD's owned in Chicago, and I'd bet with the economy the way it is, their owner would be happy to move them back to airborne law enforcement.
