All Kidding Aside

Just for a few seconds:
  • What if this kid wasn't a kid with a desire to play cops and robbers?
Numerous commentators have stated "what if he had a gun?" "What if he had a bomb?" "What if he was part of an organized effort, like Mumbai or a gang initiation?" And the answer is simple:
  • We'd be fucked
Station security is a joke and has been for years. Doors that don't open. Doors that stay open. Sally-ports that don't function. Lockup doors that don't lock. Civilians with no ID running around. Homeless encampments racked with how many strains of TB, Hepatitis and all manner of virus, germ and EPA Biohazard Superfund potential.

This kid identified an "egregious" flaw? Not at all. This kid exploited an egregious flaw that's been in place for years.

Do you know what we saw today? We saw J-Fed make the smartest move he's made to date. He stayed away from the press conference. And do you know why he was right to do so? Because these flaws, these shortcomings, these "egregious" and monumental lapses in building security were in place long before J-Fed got here. Decades in some cases.

So expect some knee jerk reaction that doesn't involve spending any of the mayor's precious Olympic bribe money. Doors will not be fixed. Metal detectors will not be installed. Security checkpoints within a building will not be manned. Felons who work for various housekeeping outfits will continue to empty unshredded documents with names, star numbers and criminal histories. Homeless persons will continue to camp out in lobbies spreading plague, Ebola and hemorrhagic fever.

Stand up inspections will cure everything along with a healthy dose of Big Bird. Pucker up boys and girls.

Yes,all kidding aside most if not all CPD buildings are poorly secured. H/Q has kids looking at IDs and people working the desk at the districts dont want to get a gold star surprise if they challenge someone's creds.Sadly it takes embarassment in order for this to be in the spotlight.

Agreed, SCC. Agreed. We'll all have to wear our little nametags and our holsters will be checked for actual guns and life will go on as usual.

Because, in order for this department to continue to function, it has to be that way. Imagine if they actually implemented real security; we'd slow from a crawl to an honest to god standstill.

Does anybody besides myself think that some of the "Bosses"(I use that term loosely) should also be charged with False Personation of Police??

This event truely shines a light on the lack of security that exists at all department facilities. Will this bring any changes? Doubtful.

I find it hard to believe that this kid purchased uniforms at any uniform store. More believable is that this kid STOLE uniforms from a locker room while engaged in his Explorer activities.

This event would be a great sub-plot in a novel sort-of Clancy-ish ie Teeth of the Tiger.

We are so screwed if a real foriegn or domestic terrorist attach happens in this city.

Email from Copper friends in Hawaii, Florida and Arizona have sent laughs and questioning whether the leadership is competent, and if facility security exists at any level.

Gonna make some popcorn cause this is gonna get real good. I expect all sorts of new proceedures from roll call to proximity devices similiar to those used at High Security Military facilities.

Good move J-Fed, lay low till ShortShanks tells you what your going to do. If the heat disapates from this and the Blago proceeding your replacement by Car 47 cant be to far away. Is it your fault?? Heck NO- You walked into a situation where the deck was stacked against you from the get-go. Second, I'm embarrassed to be a Chicago Police Officer.. knowing a 14 year old does more police work than most officers on this job and has more street experience than the STUPIDintendt leading us..

Third, I'm embarrassed to be a FEMALE Chicago Police Officer.. cuz the dumb biach couldn't tell he wasn't the real po-po during a full tour...

*Furlo's posted with officers names for all to see (how many coppers got their home broken into during fulo?)..
*Unshredded confidential reports thrown out to trash..
*Easy access to locker rooms and staff washrooms from the outside..
*A previous poster brought up health concerns about homeless staying in the station with TB and hepatitis..

Why is it that just about every real police department you see has no access to the public without getting buzzed in by a police officer. And after the citizen gets buzzed in they have to speak to someone through a bullet proof window. I have seen many suburban police departments that have two to three doors to get through before accessing the work areas. With all the new police stations chicago has been building you would think in todays times they would have some type of security system for their police officers. Just a thought.

If your ever at an area station the court people walk around and get miffed if question as who they are or to see their ID. Yet, try to go into that court room and while being in full uniform with vest and radio they want, no demand to see your ID. The back door is closed for security for the court while the back door to the station is open. Now that there are an extra 100 people assigned to the area gang teams how the hell do you know who’s who? Let’s not forget the area teams that take prisoners/ gang banger informants/ down stairs to their offices. Or, let them use the toilets in the police locker room! WTF. . . What has to be done or happen to get some special jagoff’s to wear their ID’s? I know Deputy that” they are YOUR PEOPLE” but there are rules even for you and yours!
Yea Right. Excuse me anyone downtown can you try to beef up station security a little! Even let’s just try to fake it and put out a fax or BOP something like you might give a shit! How about a sign requiring EVERYONE to wear their ID’s? It the broken window theory gets them to do the small stuff first! OK OK have to add them too. Are detective issued ID? Because I haven’t seen one yet!

The AP story made the Sydney Morning Herald on the other side of the planet. Al Jazeera too.

It's also being carried in Europe and throughout the world. When the actual details fully unfold, rest assured that the IOC will know about the colossal and dysfunctional governmental clusterfuck that is Daley's Chicago.

Cuckcoo Shortshanks has ordered the WEISel to "circle the wagons".
Kick back with the popcorn on this one.

If you have something this priceless and hilarious, make your first phone call to the Chicago office of the Associated Press (AP) which goes INTERNATIONAL.
Circumvent local media. They're in bed with "Cuckcoo"

I have to say this is best thread in a long time on this site.

This is one issue we as police officers could all come together on and embarass the city beyond all belief.

Da Mayor wants the Olympics yet are police and fire facilities are in horrendous shape. The cars and equipment for the street are even worse.

Where is the undercover investigation as to how the police budget is being spent??????? We know its not on equipment or maintenance of facilities. We are short officers beyond all belief. I don't care how much OT some officers are making it doesn't cover the mass shortage of officers.

Somebody in the media do something. We as officers can only complain so long.

Station security is on us!!!! We are the ones who are going to get hurt, we can bitch all we want about broken doors, gates, etc. but we are there.
A p/o confronted a male who just walked behind the desk, that male became indignant and demaned to see the w/c. The female said sure, as soon as you show me some id. He did and then she directed him to the w/c's office. He got outside the w/c's offie and was confronted by a sgt who asked him who he was, he again became indignant becasue he had put his id away. Well he showed it and was let on his merry way. Well the upset officer was an exempt, now deputy chief, who felt people should just know who he was.
It's time we become proactive for our own security, we are the police, if your in a station wear your id and don't be a jagbag if your questioned if u dont, if there is a problem bring it to the desk sgt or w/c. To you desk sgt's and w/c's if this is brought to you stand up for your officers, it's your life to!!!!!

===================================

My thoughts EXACTLY!! Several years ago, I had to go to a south suburban police station to retrieve a CPD star that was found by a retired PO. I went to this police station in a marked car, in the Sgt's field UNIFORM, and I had to speak to a clerk behind a bulletproof window, then wait in a waiting area for a Police Officer to come get me and escort me to the back office. NOW THAT'S SECURITY!! Our stations are a disaster waiting to happen. For crying out loud, Harold's Chicken Shacks are more secure than our police stations are!!

There is a complete lack of supervision in the Chicago police dept. Maybe someoe would have nticed if we were not 200 Sgt's short. Maybe if we were not so short staffed people wouldn't be grateful just to see an extra body. Station security is a joke. We have had several shooting in the lobby's of police districts including 03 very recently. Sorry guys, and pardon my laughing at this situation! I really feel sorry for the state of CPD. I retired a few years ago after more than 3 decades and went into the security business. I know what is possible out there to control access to buildings. It is not very expensive to lock down buildings with tight access control and monitoring.New ID cards ( smart cards) would have to be issued. These would control access. The mayor and the clueless exempts just either don't know or won't spend the money. Hire an outside security consultant to evaluate each building. Do not use in-house people to do this.And.. tell the truth at press conferences. The one I saw last night was full of lies from Dugan. Good luck and stay safe!!

Unlike some of the suburban departments, there are lot of people going thru those rear doors of police stations. In the areas you have all the court personnel, civilian employees, janitors, tow drivers, engineers, streets and san workers waiting to swipe in and out. Basically you might have 500-600 people coming and going all day long.

The city designed these buildings the wrong way. There should be seperate entrances for police and a secure side to these buildings with a wall and windows at the desk. It's not a Wal-mart service desk, it's a police station.

And the parking lots should also be secure. Most don't even have adequate signs posted.

what are the running dog rev'runs gonna do when we pinch one of their congregants?

no whoopin' & hollerin' in the lobby/desk area, disrupting station operation and posing a potential hazard by impeding foot traffic & alarming passers-by?

"i'se wanna talk to yo commanduh, me an' my 12 homies..uhh, 'chu'uch elders.'"

perish the thought scc! but on a serious note, this silly shit about police stations being an "urban oasis" cooling/warming center for the disease ridden/mentally unbalanced homeless etc has got to end. it puts officers at an unnecessary risk and is empty feel good bullshit to appease the non-contibutors & their enablers.

About 10 years ago there was a CR involving a southside district when a M/B with a black vest cover and gun/holster and walked in and told the WC that he was a new tact guy from another district and was told to ride with that districts tact team for a night. The WC put him out with one of the cars for the night. Turns out he was not a PO, but a gangbanger who had stolen all the stuff. Kept quiet, but the WC did time. Maybe the POs also.
Maybe someone who was in IAD can fill in the blanks.

Guy in 010 ALWAYS questions people coming into the secured areas without uniform. Seems he asked the wrong civilian who just so happen to work for Alderman Dixon. He was suppose to meet with the Commander but thought he would just walk in and show himself up to the office. So he was challenged and later allowed to see the Commander. And what happens? The PO gets admonished by the Commander and is told "Don't you ever deny ANYONE from ever seeing me." Later that week, some bust out comes in from the street screaming about, "I's wants to see the Commander, this ticket is bullshit." P.O. escorts this person to the Commanders office, knocks and says "Boss, this person would like to speak to you." Look on his face was priceless. Needless to say, this PO gets messed with CONSTANTLY.

That more desk officers aren't killed is a miracle. Walk into a PD in any low crime suburb. All government agencies must be held to balance their books. Any business must do so or go bust. The city must be held to make all financial obligations or we will pay dearly in the future.

hey: how about this security breech, tact officers bringing gang bangers into the tact office while they gather information on other gang members. they also bring the victim who is really only another gang member into the tact office to sign complaints. i walk by the office and see them sitting in the office all along while the tact officer is runing around in another part of the station. I might be mistaken, but they the tact officers sometimes leave their guns in the file cabinets, don't the tact guys have pictures of known district gang members on the walls/black board area. but yet they are to lazy to put these Victims (offenders) in a room at the front desk. this is a very dangerous thing you guys are doing. and you don't have to bring your victims into the secure area to sign complaints, do it at the front desk, or the rooms off the front desk area. i asked a tact guy during the summer why they did this, and he said that the tact lt. told them it was alright to do this that way our victim don't walk out of the station. well this is a safety issue and now that your tact Lt. is on medical, why not think of the rest of the officers safety in the station and leave that gang banging victim in the room by the desk. old school here.

Think this will screw up the kid's eligibility to join CPD down the line? :)

I noticed the mother wasted no time getting herself on the news last night, to include providing the kid's full name and picture(which had been withheld). She sounded more upset with the police for not catching it than she did with her son for pulling this stunt.

I smell a lawsuit coming the city's way in the very near future.

The most secure facility is Homan Square hands down...why can't all facilities be like that?? They have key pads and palm readers for entry and multiple palm scans for certain parts of the building.

THIS HONORABLE MENTION IS PRESENTED TO:

Vincent Richardson, 14 YOA

On 25 Jan 2009 you worked Bt 395 on the 3rd watch. You and your partner, aka Colombo, responded to many assignments and handled yourselves with professionalism. You lead the watch in Movers, Parker's and bus checks for the day. Your partner stated your driving skill were second to none. At approx 1930 hrs you and your partner responded to a Domestic where the Offender attempted to flee. After a short foot chase you apprehended the offender, placed him under arrest and transported to 003 to be processed.

Your dedication to duty rose above and beyond those of the average Officer!

THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE.

Signed:
Lilly Crump Hales.

P.S.

I understand about you not having a gun. Mine is still inventoried at Midway airport.

Some nimrod had iron fences put inside Area Two for security. Problem, the fences doesn't stop random people from walking under a staircase and using an ATM or going the the bathroom. What is the point of the fence? When did police stations become homeless shelters? Security is a joke.

If I worked as a copper in another city or was just a citizen from somewhere else I would think that the Chicago police dept. is the most fucked up dept. around. This is one thign I disagree with you on. We as the rank and fil eget embarassed on a regular basis, it sure is nice to see the brass put on the spot for once. My only question is why in the hell would Jimmy J. say there was no interaction with the public when he knows there was. All this will get out and I would expect to see some retirements out of it. Hey Jimmy J. ask Teddy for some help on the matter, after all he is your assigned Detective. If that's what you want to call him.

--------------------------------------------------
Sorry guys, and pardon my laughing at this situation!

Something doesn't seem right about this situation. This kid rides along and no one thinks that something wasn't right with a 5'3" male PO who didn't have a gun and a star. This is starting sound like an episode of Reno 911. The whole thing is hilarious on level but on another level its really, really scary!

See, this is how easy it could be for a terrorist to compromise, and deliver a successful attack. If a 14 year old could breech our daily routine, emagine what a terrorist cell could easily do and get very close to downtown, or politcal officals and cause devistation. The city is not doing enough on our part to fight terrorism. Our stations and Areas along with parking lots are secure. I believe the most unsecure Area is A/2 & the 005th dist.

Why is it that just about every real police department you see has no access to the public without getting buzzed in by a police officer. And after the citizen gets buzzed in they have to speak to someone through a bullet proof window
-----------------------------------
That's because we have a Mayor who hates us and if it doesn't come back on him doesn't give a rat's ass as to what happens to us.

City Hall has way better security than any station (gee, big surprise.)

I work in 23 and have seen so many detectives walk into the station without wearing I.D. nor a badge showing. (of course their guns are visible, but so what!)I always tell them the Captain is real stickler so you better be wearing your I.D. so he can see it. I try to be nice about it but some people,(women)react poorly.

Our desk officers do a very good job of making sure people belong there. We had an incident where a guy that had been arrested had been found wandering around on the second floor where nothing is secured or locked. He gained entry through a rear door that was unlocked out of the view of desk officers. Unfortunately many officers were bringing prisoners in and out of this door so its no surprise that one of these mopes wised up.
None of the locker rooms have locks on them. When I use the bathroom, I need to take off all my stuff in a small tiny stall as if its a public bathroom and keep one eye on it.

Aren't we supposed to be able to leave our guns in our locker? That rear entrance was broken for years before the incident occurred and quickly fixed shortly after. Thank god that someone found that jerk before he did something bad. I know its my fault for having that false sense of security but damn I'm in my second home where it should be safe.

Anyway, what happened was f* &^d up and I am just glad no one was hurt and it went without incident.

I do want to know who is going to pickup the slack for all the activity the kid generated thereby raising the bar.
