FOP Update and Meeting

  • The Core Group met with the City on Friday as the collective bargaining process rolls on. Issues that were discussed included:

    Lowering the age to 55 from the current 60 for Retiree Health Insurance coverage;

    Wage increases;

    Reorganizing Section 23.8 relative to bid units;

    Discipline issues;

    Military Leave issues;

    and the financial situation of the City.

    We are now getting into the issues of most importance. Each of these issues is still open for more discussion which will take place at the next Core Group meeting scheduled for 26 January. We anticipate having a full negotiations team meeting shortly after that at which time we will discuss the current status of negotiations and what course we will take in the future.
Also from the meeting, there are no negotiations taking place that do not include retro. They were pretty adamant about it. Retro is coming. Someone is feeling the heat.

lowering the age for health insurance to 55, how about to 50, if people started the job at 21,22,23,24,25,26 they are pretty much either not going to benefit from this or will have to work a couple of extra years for free!

WTF???

So over the last 19 months you were discussing the LEAST IMPORTANT ISSUES!!!

FOR 19 F*CKING MONTHS!!!

Maybe if they weren't dining on Surf & Turf and Cognac after each "negotiating session" on our dime, we'd have a contract by now?

More than a year and a half and just now getting to the IMPORTANT ISSUES!?!

And those Important issues are what? How many lap dancers to have at the next meeting?

Has anyone else seen the hilarious video at roll call with J-Fed and the brass trying to motivate us by saying "they are behind us, so don't be afraid to go out there and be the police." They continued to say "we all make mistakes, but if you have good intentions and act reasonably we will back you" After we left roll call we all stood around and laughed for a few minuets. Even the Capt. thought it was funny. I have no idea how they can say things like that and expect even the newest copper to believe them. They're all lying politicians. This job is a huge fucked up bureaucracy and will never change. The amount of paper generated for the smallest and most senseless things is amazing.

Most of us know it will always be different rules for different folks and if you don't have a phone call you will be screwed! Every boss is out for themselves only and will always want to make themselves look good in the eyes of their bosses. Screwing a P.O. means nothing to them no matter what J-Fed and the brass say in a video. It's all part of the bureaucracy.

City cant stop you from deploying wether you vomunteer or are called up for service with the Resv or National Guard. Per Title 10 and Title 30 U.S.C. Lawyers will help you for free should you have an issue with the city of chicago. Also by law and contract the city has to give you any and all promotion tests up your return from service. These Aldercreatures are jjust looking to put their names out there. None truly know what the law is or how it is applied to veterans.

Fix Military Deploments-Well you can start be not treating us like pieces of crap. We are abused both going and returning by this city and dept.Why when you return from military leave do you have to fuillout tons of paperwork.Even a sheet that askes for all our passed employements its like being re-hired all over again. I wonder are we jsut removed from the rols.maybe thats why after going to combat and returning to the dept it took over 2 months to get paid.All the city has to do is give us a physical and run our names. Why if we are honored with a silly ribbon doesnt this Balcer guy and Daley stand up for us isntead of just standing next to us for the cameras???? NYPD lets its pos keep their shields and ids and even pays them. NYPD had an officer die in Iraq and they even paid his death benefit on top of the military SGLI. Maybe thats because their dept honors their vets.

Please do not change our disciplinary process, I am not going to be blowing in breath machines just because some asshole down at city hall thinks it is a good way to make the City look good. Also what about the recording of IPRA statements? Why do they need a recording? The FOP has the deck stacked in their favor, don't make any concessions to the city concerning discipline, you will be throwing your members under the bus.

NYPD grants all sworn members 30 days of paid leave annually for military service. This can be used for AT,ADT,IDTT,Drill,etcetra.

NYPD also pays their sworn members salary while on deployment along with keeping their military pay and benefits.

In a time of war it is unconsciousonable to remove any military benefits.

If there is any reduction in benefits we must contact the VA,VFW,American Legion,NERA,USMC League,etc.

I don't know if you all know this, but the department pays your full salary while you are deployed to a combat zone. If you are mobilized stateside, they pay the difference. That's because this is in the current contrace, I hope they don't change this.

Federal law doesn't say that they have to continue paying you, your job is guaranteed when you return, that's it.

Since this is my first deployment, I don't know what to expect when I come back...any veterans out there?

How about compelling the City to include a categorical and unequivocal written definition of the word "MERIT" and the criteria for same as it applies to promotions, assignments, extradepartmental education, etc.

Would that be asking too much?

If the City refuses to do so, even oblivious citizens will realize that something sinister is afoot despite J-Fed's bunco promise for a "transparent" process.

Obviously, sworn CPD readers know that Chicago-style "merit" is nothing more than a euphemism for corrupt political clout. However, naive taxpayers could understandably ask "What's wrong with merit?" The best and the brightest. BULLSHIT!

Noah Webster would roll over in his grave if he knew how this cesspool of a city has bastardized a perfectly good word.

To those that post on the blog, please substitute CLOUT for "merit" or at least use quotation marks. If you want to "tone down" CLOUT, then say "arbitrary management discretion".

One thing is certain. Actual merit has nothing to do with this outrage.

To do otherwise is an egregious insult to our intelligence.

I am a CPD member who deployed to Afghanistan in 2007. The City of Chicago, Mayor Daley, Phil Cline (Supt. Weis wasn’t in yet) and my fellow department members treated me like gold. There isn’t another city that treats their reservists any better. God Bless, Mayor Daley, Phil Cline, and my brothers and sisters in the CPD. As I ran like a scared little rabbit into a hole when the occasional rocket/s would hit the base or when I strapped myself into one of those flying bricks (helicopters) for a mission I knew that no matter what my family would be taken care of. It was a good feeling and allowed me to do my job there and come home in one piece physically & mentally. Sid Davis and Sol T (personnel) were pretty good too. The CPD does a lot better than the NYPD in this matter. Thank you, everybody it meant a lot.

Why are we fighting for medical at 55? Shouldn't we wait and see if Obama passes health care?

No, we shouldn't wait. If Federal law ends up overriding our contract, then it does. In the meantime, negotiations can't be held up on the 'off-chance' that something will change. Let's just wait for our raises and benefits for a Federal plan that might be implemented in five years?

YOU must be 26 years old and have all the time in the world to 'wait'. About 20% of the Depeartment could find themselves easing on down the road if this makes it into our contract this year.

I want my 10 hour days!!!!!!

--- F* That! There's life out there bud. Getting up and going right to work isn't what I'm looking for. You spend your entire day traveling to work, working, traveling from work and your 4 days off are spent catching up on all the BS that you can't do on work days. Defeats the purpose if you ask me. I'd vote NO in a heartbeat.

1/22/2009 12:02:00 AM

Well maybe you live too far from work. I live in 22, work in 5, and I find plenty of time to do things in the morning. I work 1600-0300, so two hours longer. Thing is, almost 3 or 4 days a week I would be out that late, an arrest, a beer after work, what have you.

Still have time, and enough sleep to get up with the kids for school, get a work out in, and a nap if needed, and run errands during the day too. Then, after just having four days off, I am more willing to go back to work and start it all over.

It works for me, sorry it does not work for you, but maybe you live too far from the ditrict you work in. We have guys in 5 that live in 8, and I know it sucks for them, but they like the 10 hour days too. Just think, if it went citywide, you could bid to a district closer to work and get the same benefits I am enjoying right now.

Keep an open mind.

Folks:

It's nice to pull big numbers out of the air, with retro.

But the fact of the matter is most City employees have suffered pay CUTS, and no raises recently. The City's finances are in a shambles. Unemployment is soaring.

We're all gonna look like a bunch of clueless fools if we go demanding huge increases and retro checks the City doesn't have money for.

Sorry. Rail against the bosses all you like, but don't ignore the current realities of the situation.

"I thought that there will be no retiree healthcare after the year 2013. Can someone explain what the 55yoa retiree healthcare is all about if they are going to cancel it in 2013 anyway."

Get thee to a retirement seminar- they'll explain it throughly-or better yet- ask your union rep.

Not and expert- but here it is-when you retire before 60 you get a different type of BCBS 'insurance' than you do if you wait until 60 years of age. Dropping that age limit to 55 helps out coppers.

The current version of retiree healthcare has various formulas of what percentage you pay of the premium-dependent on when you retired and how many years you had at the time of retirement. If you had 20 + years and retired on or before 07/01/2005, you pay 50% of the premium and the city pays 50%.....less than 10 years and retired on 7/01/2005....the city pays 0% and you pay 100%.

All of this is guaranteed until 2013 and then is subject to another look.

NORTHSIDE:

Your proposal is just principled common sense. The media and FOP know this whole job is a scam. If Shortshanks says jump, they jump. J-Fed is a spineless twit.

This is the Chicago way. Of all people you should know that barring a miracle, the dept. is FUBAR. Just look at the whore captains that sold out for $18k.

With admiration and respect, all the best in your retirement, John.

Give the old guy Coppers 55yrs. and older out with insurance already. They are all old, slow, worn out, long-tooths. Hire some young cops, and maybe some criminals will get caught. Some of these guys look like my Grandfather, [and Grandmother]. Think to the future, not the past.

So do what you signed up for and STFU!

If you want to see some "real" combat come and watch me fight. More than 95% of you that get shipped out don't even fire your gun!!!
___________________________

I think guys that are or have been in the military could talk a lot of shit sometimes but you need to STFU. How could you compare the MMA to serving your country honorably in the United States Military. You are a moron. Fighting in a ring combat? They don't weigh you in overseas to match you up to an equal size Afghan mountain fighter so that you have a fair fight. There is no reff. You can't tap out if you get in a shitty situation. So don't even try to compare the MMA to someone who served in the military. You'll never match up to them. They may not have fired their gun, but at least they had the balls to pick one up and go over there and use it if they had to. You're a joke!

I thought the morale video was a joke. You say well back you up bullshit!!! We have no cars, extremely shorthanded and everytime our contract comes up for renewal the City drags its feet. Now you want us to work like we used too. This City has what they always wanted a bunch of paperwriters and now it is backfiring in there face and it couldn't have happened at a worst time with crime on the rise.

To the W/C on 3rd watch in the 20th District. Obviously you didn't see the morale video you know the one we got your back. You lack good management skills. Obviously if you were a good boss you would not have to address the issue. My commander did that to our roll call several years ago and it made matters worse and he did it to just get himself promoted to a higher position. Besides that is a quota and its illeagal
