Suburban Cop Cleared

  • A federal jury today cleared a former Glen Ellyn police officer of wrongdoing, finding he didn't use excessive force when he fatally shot a naked College of DuPage student after responding to a domestic battery call in 2006.

Jurors deliberated for less than an hour.

[...] Bradley testified that he fired the fatal shot after Uwumargogie straddled him and repeatedly punched him in the face. Bradley, now a state trooper, said he feared he was about to lose consciousness.

Bradley was being beaten into unconsciousness and that would have left him at the mercy of a madman with his service weapon. It also would have left any other responding officers exposed to untold dangers of responding to a mental now armed with a pistol.

A jury that actually sees sense in Illinois is a nice change. And while we don't envy Trooper Bradley the stress he went through, we're glad he's still among the living.

From the comments section:

"The officer should sue the family for raising an animal."

Good job, Trooper.

Great job from the jury on this one!

I have to ask, SCC, if you find that, on the JOB as long as you have been, do you feel the 'crooks' have gotten 'bolder' as time has progressed?

Or, as an old copper's daughter, is that just my imagination?

In any event, I support CPD--without you all out there, the City would be sooooo bad, so in turmoil. PLEASE--keep working, all of you.

YOU ARE THE ONLY POLICE WE HAVE!

It's a shame that they dragged this officer through this crap for doing what he was justified to do. A terrible experience to begin with only to be dragged through the mud again in court.

Read the original article and then read the comments below. Regular folks still appreciate the police. It's expected here, SCC. It's just good to hear it somewhere else.

God bless Trooper Bradley. Nobody ever comes on this job thinking he's going to have to take a life and our hearts go out to those few who have had to.

This case NEVER should have been brought to trial. It should have been dismissed from the beginning.

The real victim here is the officer. Thank God you survived this traumatic incident.

As for the lawyer and the offender's family who pushed for the law suit, FUCK YOU!

Key word there: Dupage. If it were Cook Co. we all know what the outcome would have been.

How much did the family pass up as a settlement?

I love this story. Something tells me the family doesn't have a lot of savings.

If the jury so much as gave the plaintiff one penny, then the city would be on the hook for all of the legal fees. That's the big driving force behind Title 1983 lawsuits.

This jury did the right thing. $0.00.

There's also a small law firm that dedicated a big part of the last two years fighting this case. Might be hard to make rent this month.

Kudos to the City of Glen Ellyn for taking this to trial. Chicago would have settled for $3 million.

Of course, SCC is right. If this went to trial with a Cook County jury, plaintiff probably would have been awarded $30 million.

In Shit-cago/Crook County the copper would have been screwed, just like Mike Mette was in Iowa.

A while back I heard of a person working in the Abla Homes as security. He was approached by and jumped on by 3 masked m-1's who attempted to disarm him of his Beretta. The Guard, broke the arm, collar bone and jaw of the first offender, broke three ribs on the 2nd offender and finally succumbed to the attack. the weapon was taken placed next to the guards head and only because of his dilligent thought to carry a radio and call a 10-1 on Zone 13 did he escape with his life. The most satisfying moment was when the Offenders were found guilty and sent to prison for a mandatory 5 years. And yes this happened in Crook county. When we fight,we fight to win.NO EXCEPTIONS.by and the way the M-1's lawsuit for excessive force was DISMISSED.

and from that moment forward that guard carries at least 2 guns.I know there is a low opinion of SUR CURITY people but this guy stands out of the crowd. In 2006 he obtained over 493 convictions out of the 503 cases he had in Public housing. This guy works his ass off and is humble about it. I remember when the verdict came down and I have never seen a more thankful face on that Guard than anyone in my life.A lot of Police stepped up for him the night of the 10-1 and well afterwards. This is an amazing job for the RIGHT people. And Im sorry that pins in his knee and back stopped him from becoming CPD he would have been a great asset.

I know Im getting long winded and i appologize SCC but in this guys case the system worked. It doesnt most other times and is geared to pay the M-1's that look at us as a source of income. But every great once in a while there is a modicum of justice exacted on those that TRULY deserve it. Im off my soap box now. That guard by the way is affectionately known as "Lathrop One"

You da man Chubbie!
